Margaret River boasts the largest concentration of new

rammed earth houses in the world. ICREC2015 delegates will

be invited to tour some of these sites as part of the conference programme, some striking examples of which are given below.

St Thomas More Catholic Church was constructed by local volunteers using local materials. It was completed in 1982 and attracts thousands of visitors each year.

The church was the first large commercial rammed earth building in Australia, setting interest in modern rammed earth alive.

The Cape Mentelle vineyards were established in 1970. Their rammed earth cellar blends in perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

The Lenton Brae winery was designed by Bruce Tomlin-son in 1989 and was built using 350mm wide cement stabilised rammed earth walls. It boasts cool tempera-tures in summer and warm in winter. The winery was heritage listed in 1998. Rammed earth houses in Margaret River

Sandalford Wines was established in 1840, coinciding with the first European settlement of Perth. Sandlafords’s rammed earth Cellar Door sits amongst a beautiful country garden, surrounded by grape vines and southwest bushland.
