2.2 INTERLOCKING CONCRETE PAVING STONES

.1 Interlocking Concrete Paving Stones shall meet the following performance requirements:

.1 Compressive strength: to CSA A23.4-94, maximum 58 MPa.

.2 Water Absorption: to CSA A23.4-94, maximum 5%.

.3 Freeze/Thaw Resistance: to CSA A23.4-94 maximum 10% weight loss with no visible effects after fifty cycles.

.4 Colour: to be selected by the Minister from full range of manufacturer's standard colours.

.5 Texture: manufacturer's standard.

.6 Shape: as shown on drawings.

.7 Thickness:.1 57 mm where detailed (for pedestrian traffic only)..2 80 mm where detailed (for area subject to vehicular traffic).

.8 Size: [full size] [                                  ] [as detailed].

.2 Interlocking Concrete Edging Units:

.1 Same performance and texture requirements as specified for interlocking concrete paving stones.

.2 Colour: [To match interlocking concrete paving stones] [as selected by the Minister from full range of manufacturer's standard colours.

.3 Shape:  As shown on drawings. [                      ]

.4 Size:  [50% edging stone for properly finished edges] [                 ].

SPEC NOTE:  Use clauses 2.2.2.1 to 2.2.2.4 if edging stones are to be from same manufacturer as interlocking concrete paving stones. Specify curb designs in other sections of Division 2 or include in clause 2.3.2 Timber Edger, in this Section.

.3 All interlocking paving stones shall be sound and free of cracks, chips and defects that would interfere with proper placing of units or impair strength or permanence of construction.

SPEC NOTE:  Multiple use of units or colours and shapes to be identified in specification or on drawings. Check local manufacturers for shapes, sizes, thicknesses and colours available.

2.3 ACCESSORIES

.1 Weed Retardant:  150 micrometre polyethylene film to CGSB 51-GP-51M.

.2 Timber Edger:

.1 Size:  [140 mm x 140 mm] [              ].

.2 Species:  [Spruce-Pine-Fir] [              ].

.3 Grade:  [construction] [              ].

.4 Preservative Treatment:  to CAN/CSA-080 Series-M89, using ACA or CCA water borne preservative treatment.

.3 Surface Applied Wood Preservative:  Copper napthenate or pentachlorophenol base water repellant, coloured green.

.4 Anchor Rods for Timber Edger: 20 M reinforcing steel, 750 mm length.

SPEC NOTE: Use clause 2.3.2 to 2.3.4 if timber edgers are to be used instead of interlocking concrete edging units.

3. Execution

3.1 INSPECTION

.1 Subgrade to be unfrozen and free from snow or ice.

.2 Check graded subgrade for conformity with elevations and sections before placing granular base material.

.3 Proof roll graded subgrade surface with mass and type of roller approved by the Minister.

.1 Check for unstable areas.

.2 Check for areas requiring additional compaction.

SPEC NOTE:  Proof rolling not required for pedestrian walks and light traffic paved areas.

3.2 EXAMINATION

.1 Notify the Minister of unsatisfactory subgrade conditions.

3.3 WEED RETARDANT

.1 Lay polyethylene film on subgrade. Lap joints 150 mm.

3.4 GRANULAR BASE

.1 Place coarse granular base to [[100] [     ] mm compacted thickness] [thickness shown on drawings] for pedestrian walks only.

Page 6: ICP CHECKLIST.DOC

Section 02781Interlocking Concrete

Plan No:  Paving StonesProject ID:  Page 4

.2 Place 2 separate compacted layers of [100] [     ] mm thickness each] to [thickness shown on drawings] for vehicular traffic.

.3 Finished base course shall be approved by the Minister before the placement of the sand laying course.

.4 Place fine granular sand base to [50] [    ] mm compacted thickness [as shown on drawings].

.5 Place base courses in layers not exceeding 150 mm compacted thickness. Compact each layer to 95% Maximum Dry Density.

SPEC NOTE:  Thickness and compaction determined by design-load requirements.

.6 Once screeded and levelled to required contours and grades, the sand laying course shall not be disturbed in any way.

3.5 INTERLOCKING PAVING STONE INSTALLATION

.1 Install paving stones on sand base to [herringbone] [parquet] [running] pattern [shown on drawings].

SPEC NOTE:  The herringbone pattern has the best interlocking effect to prevent movement of individual units. If the running bond is used as a driving surface for vehicles, units must be laid at right angles to the driving direction.

.2 Butt paving units together with maximum 3 mm joints.

.3 Cut stones where required to fit accurately and neat. Cutting shall provide a straight even surface without cracks or chips using a guillotine cutter or a concrete saw.

.4 Embed, tamp and level into sand base course by compacting with mechanical vibrator.

.5 Sweep sand into joints between paving stones, filling all voids. Water in sand with fine spray. Refill all joints with additional sand as required.

3.6 PRECAST EDGING STONE INSTALLATION

.1 Install edging stones plumb, with top [[     ] mm above] [flush with] stone paving surface, to manufacturer's instructions [as detailed].

SPEC NOTE:  Delete above if different edging is specified in other Sections of Division 2 or clause 3.7 Timber Edgers is used.

3.7 TIMBER EDGER INSTALLATION

.1 Install timber edger flush with interlocking concrete paving stones [as detailed].

.2 Treat surfaces exposed by cutting, trimming or drilling, with liberal brush application of surface applied wood preservative before installation.

.3 Anchor timber edger into subgrade by installing anchor rods into each end of timber and 600 mm on centre.

3.8 CLEANING

.1 Broom clean excess sand from finished paving stones, followed by final water spray.
