Many instructors, however, are still reluctant to use them, especially with the beginner levels. our goal will be to reflect on the use of literary material as an enhancing agent of cross-cultural communication, intersubjective experience and collaborative learning in the classroom. to do so, we will work with different teaching sequences drawn from diverse literary texts (narrative, poetry & dramatic) and designed for various proficiency levels.

grAmmAr: A chAllEngE tO thE studEnt Or tO thE tEAchEr?spanish grammar can be as difficult for the student to learn as it is for the instructor to teach. this is particularly the case with anglophone students, or students for whom english is a second language, who in many cases are discouraged by spanish grammar’s complexity. Being aware of spanish grammatical structures can significantly improve the teaching-learning process, by enabling the instructor to abandon seemingly endless lists and instead utilize more meaningful and logical techniques. there is no magic formula to learn spanish grammar, but there are ways to make it easier for the instructor and student alike.

coUrSeS For KidS & TeeNSat Instituto Cervantes we believe in the importance of learning a second language from an early age. Children who speak more than one language have greater cognitive advantages. speaking more than one language benefits their intellectual development, provides a base for the learning and understanding of other languages; it improves communication skills, strengthens academic learning, fosters creative thinking and problem solving, and it develops their awareness of other cultures.

we offer a comprehensive program for kids and teens designed with their learning abilities in mind. Children are placed in groups according to age, and they learn and practice spanish through fun activities like arts and crafts, songs, dance, games, and stories.

thEAtrE WOrkshOpwhat is the purpose of the Children’s theatre workshop?

• enhance social skills. • empower the imagination. • Boost confidence and build self-esteem. • Develop communication skills in spanish. • Have fun learning about theatre!

the Children’s theatre workshop will not only help children in their language-learning experience, it will also ignite their enthusiasm; nurture their aptitude to think critically and objectively; develop their ability and passion to work and collaborate with others; and, not least of all, build self-confidence. since theatre is very much a product of its geographical and cultural roots, during the workshop we are going to explore the arts and cultures of different spanish-speaking countries. for kids ages 8 to 13.

cOmE plAy!the objective of this workshop is to encourage learning spanish through games, thereby putting grammar and vocabulary skills to use and forgetting about the blackboard and assignments. Come play! this workshop is an appealing way to learn the language aimed at students who wish to improve or enrich their spanish speaking skills in a fun and exciting way. acting games and drama exercises, as well as storytelling, improvisation and creativity will be used to explore the many possibilities by which you can communicate in spanish. Learn and improve your spanish playing!

musicAl stOrytEllingthis workshop is designed for children ages 4 to 7, who have a basic to intermediate level of spanish. students will sing songs and read stories that will help them build their vocabulary, and teach them about greetings, numbers, food, seasons of the year, verbs and different verb tenses. In addition, children will learn idiomatic expressions and will expand their conversational skills not just through reading comprehension exercises, but through music and acting. students will get a chance to play a variety of musical instruments, including african drums, spanish guitar, piano and tambourines and will be encouraged to create their own songs and stories.

lAnguAgE & mOvEmEntthis workshop is designed to tell a story using movement, thereby creating a communication bridge between these two art forms through the use of the spanish language. a simple example of this would be assigning a particular movement to every letter of the alphabet and from there choreographing both a story and a dance. this class is ideal for open, creative, collaborative and imaginative children that have a sense of play. Feeling open to move/dance is essential.
