Nonnie Markeset Mac Users Group Presentation November 20, 2017 1 ICloud: What it is. What it isn’t. And How to Harness its Power. What is it? iCloud is a web-based service offered by Apple to all people who own Apple devices: Mac computers, iDevices such as iPhones, iPads, iPods, AppleTVs and Watches. It is primarily a service that allows you to see, sync and use all your data and files on any device you own, signed into the same iCloud account. It is also a service that allows you to work on Apple App created files on the web using a browser and signed into your iCloud account. It allows you to access your data on iOS devices (ipads, iPhones, iPods) without having to connect to a computer. It is a partial backup of certain data. It is a repository for your photos and depending on your type of subscription with Apple can be a repository for your music. It is a service that allows you to optimize your storage on all your devices. (much more on this later) It is a service that gives you added security for all your devices by allowing you to register all your devices, lock or wipe them should you lose them or locate them should you misplace them. What it is NOT. It is not a substitute for your Time Machine or other backup mechanism of your Mac computer. And it is not a replacement (not yet anyway) for your computer. How to set up iCloud on each of your devices. On your Mac: o System Preferences iCloud o Sign in to your iCloud account using your Apple ID and Password. o Check all boxes except for Keychain (my recommendation) and Back to My Mac (optional) o In Options for iCloud Drive check all but the first “Desktop & Documents Folders”. More on this later. o DO NOT select “Optimize Mac Storage” until you understand the implications of this. Again, more later on this. o In Options for Photos select all three.
