Ichigo ichie literally means “once-in-a-lifetime chance” but is used
to encourage us to treasure every interaction, even with family
members and friends that we meet every day. If we exchange words
with someone, then we should value that moment as ichigo ichie.

The hope is for everyone to become a Buddha.
The Buddha
An introduction to Buddhist prayer
When leaving the Sanmon gate,
place your hands together in prayer.
If you wish to receive a goshuin
(red stamp given at shrines and temples)
as proof of worship, visit the nokyo-jo,
the temple office, after worship.
※ The four places of worship are: Daihon-do (Great Hall),
Soshi-do (Patriarch Hall), Nokotsu-do (Charnel House)
Butsuden (Main Hall)
④ Lastly, bow slowly and leave the main hall.
※ When praying aloud, chant the mantra “Namu Myoho Renge Kyo.”
③ Prayer is usually carried out in silence.
* If you have prayer beads, drape them across both hands
when praying. Do not clap.
② After correcting your posture, quietly place your hands
together and bow (bend your upper body about 45 degrees).
★Repeat twice.iii. Place the incense stick on the left side.
ii. Raise your eyes and pray.
i. Use the thumb, index finger and middle finger of your right
hand to pick up the incense stick from the right side.
① Offer incense at the incense table.
Visit the main hall for worship.
Throw a coin into the coffer as a donation.
Place burning incense on the incense table in front of the Soshi-do,
put your hands together in prayer and bow once.
⑦ Use the remaining water in the scoop to clean the handle.
⑥ Cleanse the left hand once again.
⑤ Pour this water into your mouth.
④ Return the scoop to your right hand and pour water
into the cupped palm of your left hand.
※ Never put the scoop directly to your mouth.
③ Hold the scoop in your left hand and cleanse the right hand.
② Cleanse the left hand.
① Using your right hand, dip the water scoop into the water
to fill it.
Using only one scoopful of water, carry out the following:
The purification process is as follows:
Purify yourself at the mitarashi, a holy washing font.
Goshuin are provided at temple
offices (jimujo, nokyo-jo, etc).
A priest writes the date and
temple name by hand. If you
cannot find the temple office,
ask one of the temple vendors
selling amulets.
2. How to receive a red goshuin?
Goshuin is a red seal that was traditionally offered to worshipers
as proof of dedication of hand-copied sutras to a temple or shrine.
A special temple stamp is provided in vermillion ink accompanied
by the date and name of the temple written in ink calligraphy.
One theory suggests that goshuin are alter egos of the Buddha, and
therefore they are to be cherished as sacred. In addition, goshuin
are seen as evidence that all temples are linked by fate.
1. What is goshuin?
Namu means “belief in” or “devotion to” an object of
veneration.
Myoho Rengé Kyo is an expression of Japan itself—its
climate, its unique characteristics—but includes all
the teachings and power of the Lotus Sutra.
