CONSOL ENERGY1FEDS LANDS IN ‘BIG APPLE’

Former Penguins right winger Ruslan Fedotenko, a postseason hero for Pittsburgh during its march to a 2009 Stanley Cup

championship, earned himself a one-year contract with the New York Rangers on Oct. 4 after participating in training camp on a tryout basis.

Fedotenko, 31, led New York in scoring during the exhibition season, picking up seven points (1G-6A) in five contests. The Rangers are Fedotenko’s fifth National Hockey League stop following previous stints with Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, NY Islanders and Pittsburgh. Fedotenko recorded 30 points (11G-19A) in 80 games with the Penguins last season.

CAPS UNVEIL ‘CLASSIC’ JERSEYThe Washington Capitals unveiled the jersey they will wear when they

face the Penguins in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic during the team’s second annual ‘Capitals Convention’ on Oct. 2.

Washington’s jersey closely resembles the sweaters the team wore between 1974-75 and 1994-95. It is primarily white in color and it features the Capitals wordmark on the front of the jersey with six stars above it and five stars beneath the numbers on each sleeve.

“There is a great sense of history in playing hockey outdoors, and we wanted to pay tribute to our team’s history with this uniform,” vice president and general manager George McPhee told the Capitals’ official team website.

CAPTAIN JOERob Blake’s offseason retirement left a

void at captain for the San Jose Sharks. Head coach Todd McLellan moved quickly to fill the

opening when he appointed Joe Thornton as captain on Oct. 4.This marks the second time Thornton has been a captain in

the NHL after previously serving in the same role for the Boston Bruins from 2002 until his trade to San Jose in 2005.

“We just felt that [Thornton] would be the right guy at this time,” McLellan told NHL.com. “He’s made some real big strides over the last couple of years... This is the next step in the evolution.”

RONRONRON BURKLE BURKLE BURKLE

MARIOMARIOMARIO LEMIEUX LEMIEUX LEMIEUX

Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world.Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in

retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins.

Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal.

Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less.

Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

Mario Lemieux will always be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable business career came this season — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s

new multi-purpose entertainment venue.Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-

owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise. The Penguins have been named No. 1 in Fan Relations by ESPN the Magazine, sold out a team-record 166 straight games, sold out every suite for three straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits.

Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to two Stanley Cups.

A gifted centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points.

In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. More information is available at mariolemieux.org.

Mario, his wife Nathalie and their four children live in Sewickley.

DAVIDDAVIDDAVID MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSE MOREHOUSEPittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the

Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center.Morehouse had served as team president since 2007,

overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs.

Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine.

As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic.

Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

JASONJASONJASON BOTTERILL BOTTERILL BOTTERILL

Ray Shero, 48, was named GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 25, 2006.

His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the

playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09.

One of his first acts as GM was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization.

Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators.

Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office.

The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group.

Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockey-

related matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the club’s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars.

Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo.

A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments.

He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009,

Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season.

Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim.

Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh.

He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw

the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent.

Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003.

Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993.

Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary.

Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman

for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen.Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-

10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green.

Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Enrty Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes.

coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992.

A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade.

Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average.

Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. His son, Eric, is a pro player who was a member of the Penguins organization from 2000-04.

CONSOL Energy Center opened in August, 2010 as Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue — home of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins as well as other professional and collegiate sports, concerts, children’s shows, skating shows and more.

It replaces the old Civic Arena/Mellon Arena, which had operated since 1961 and was home of the Penguins from their inception in 1967. It was the oldest arena in the National Hockey League.

“CONSOL Energy Center represents an exciting new era for the city, the region and the Pittsburgh Penguins,” said David Morehouse, CEO of the hockey team. “With open concourses, comfortable seating, cutting-edge technology, a state-of-the-art scoreboard and sound system, and an extensive array of food and beverage options, it is a spectacular symbol for the Pittsburgh of the 21st century.”

CONSOL Energy Center was completed on time and under budget, thanks to the combined efforts of architectural firms Populous and Astorino; the owner’s representative, ICON; the construction company, PJ Dick/Hunt; and the excellent construction workers and skilled trade workers of Western Pennsylvania.

The new arena seats 18,087 for hockey, 19,000 for basketball and almost 20,000 for concerts. It is a green building and is the first NHL arena to attain LEED Gold certification.

Even before its doors had opened, CONSOL Energy Center landed commitments from shows that would have bypassed the old arena — the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four, and back-to-back concerts by music legend Paul McCartney.

McCartney, who first played Pittsburgh with the Beatles in 1964 but hadn’t performed here since 1990, christened the new arena with a grand opening concert on August 18, 2010.

In its first season of operation, CONSOL Energy Center also will be home to the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League — bringing indoor football back to the city for the first time in almost 20 years.

A funding plan for the new arena project was completed in March, 2007, thanks to the combined efforts of Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, among others.

The Sports & Exhibition Authority owns the building on behalf of the city and county, and the Penguins have the lease. The new arena is managed by SMG, with Jay Roberts serving as general manager.

2010 FACE-OFF LUNCHEON

On Tuesday, October 5,

the Pittsburgh Penguins

players and management

enjoyed lunch with

business leaders of western

Pennsylvania and fans.  The

annual Penguins Face-Off

Luncheon was held for a

sold-out crowd in the Lexus

Club of CONSOL Energy Center to officially kick off the 2010-11 season.

The master of ceremony was Mike Lange and the event featured remarks from

Penguins Chief Executive Officer/President, David Morehouse, Head Coach, Dan

Bylsma and Chief Executive Officer of the Allegheny Conference on Community

Development, Dennis Yablonsky.  Guests were entertained by a highlight video

as lunch was served.  They also had an opportunity to win autographed Penguins

memorabilia in a Chinese Raffle.

Prior to the Luncheon’s start, attendees also had the opportunity to witness the

grand unveiling of the Mario Mosaic in the lobby of the Trib Total Media Gate.

The 20’x8’ mosaic contains more than 21,000 fan and construction worker photos

embedded into a canvas featuring images of Lemieux throughout his career to

hoisting the Stanley Cup as an owner in 2009.

The Penguins have a rich history of players from the Czech Republic thanks to stars such as Jaromir Jagr, Martin Straka and Robert Lang. Zbynek Michalek hopes to add his name to the list.

Michalek — who joined the Penguins on July 1 — is a shut-down, shot-blocking blueliner who looks to strengthen the team’s already deep defense. After his impressive training camp, it seems the Penguins are getting even more than they asked for.

“[Michalek] is even better than advertised,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “There’s a little more grit and bite to his game and he’s been very good defensively. But he’s also made plays with the puck.”

During the preseason, Michalek notched three assists and posted a team-leading plus-five rating. But that success doesn’t mean he’s satisfied.

“It’s been a good camp,” he said. “But I can definitely be better, and

there’s always room for improvement.”Last season, he tallied 17 points

(3G-14A) with Phoenix and helped the team reach 50 wins for the first time in Coyotes history.

But since he played in the Western Conference, the Penguins only saw him

once a year. So, even though the Penguins knew they were getting a talented, physical defenseman, many people didn’t know exactly how much talent the team was acquiring.

“Zbynek surprised me [during camp],” Bylsma said. “Not having coached him before, I’ve only watched him play on video. The battle element of his game and the work ethic of his game were a pleasant surprise.”

Michalek certainly frustrated the other teams during the preseason, but what is scary for Penguins opponents is that Michalek is still adjusting to Pittsburgh’s system.

“Coming to a new team and learning a new system is not easy,” Michalek said. “But I feel I’m progressing and getting better every single day.”

The defensive pairings are never set in stone and will likely fluctuate throughout the season, but all signs indicate that Michalek will be paired up with Brooks Orpik in the beginning of the season.

“I think we play pretty well together in practice,” Michalek said.“We’re pretty similar,” Orpik said. “I think we’re both defensive-minded first.”Much like Bylsma, Orpik never really got a chance to watch Michalek play. “Since he played in the Western Conference, I really didn’t know much about [his

game],” Orpik said. “I knew about him and who he was, but in terms of what kind of player he was, I really didn’t know until he got here. But I think everyone’s really impressed.

“I think it’s tough for any free agent to come into a new environment and get comfortable on and off the ice, but it seems like he conquered both pretty quickly. I think he’s fit in pretty easily here.”

While he’s still getting a feel for Pittsburgh, the 27-year-old Michalek said he is fully acclimated to life in the United States. He came to North America when he was 17 to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and started playing professionally in 2002 with the Minnesota Wild’s top minor-league affiliate in Houston.

More than likely Michalek will be paired up with Brooks Orpik in the beginning of the season.

“I feel like this is my second home because I spend so much time here,” he said. “I came here when I was 17, so 10 years in America is a long time.

“I like it here, I met my wife here and I feel really comfortable being here.”Michalek said he misses the sunny weather in the Arizona desert, although

Pittsburgh’s climate reminds him of home. “The Czech Republic kind of has the same weather as here, with four seasons and snow

and rain,” he said. “So it’s like going back to my younger days when I was growing up.”During those days in the Czech Republic, Michalek — like many Czechs — cheered

for the Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the most popular teams in the Czech Republic,

especially because of guys like Jagr and Straka and so many good Czech players,” he said. “I know the history here is really long and hopefully I can create a good name for Czech players here.”

He’s off to a great start. And maybe, there will soon be more young Penguins fans in the Czech Republic looking up to him.

Thanks to stars such as Jaromir Jagr, Martin Straka and Robert Lang, the Penguins have a rich history of players from the Czech Republic.

I feel .

Ask a grieving child how they’re feeling and you may get a lot of answers. Or none at all. For many, finding the words to express their feelings can be

difficult. But while finding the right words may not be easy, finding the right place to turn to for help can be. At the Caring Place, we’re here when grieving

children need someone to listen, to talk, or to just sit and be. For more information about one of our peer support groups or to volunteer, call us today.

OCTOBER 5, 1990 • PENGUINS 7, CAPITALS 4 CAPITAL CENTRE

Offseason moves which included the appointment of proven winner ‘Badger’ Bob Johnson as head coach and future Hall of Famers Bryan Trottier and Joe Mullen increased expectations on the Pittsburgh Penguins as the team entered the 1990-91 season.

Those expectations became tempered when the news hit that superstar Mario Lemieux was going to miss the beginning of the season with a back infection.

However, the Penguins never missed a beat without their best player thanks to the play of the team’s top line of Kevin Stevens, John Cullen and Mark Recchi.

Stevens, Cullen and Recchi began their assault on the National Hockey League during the 1990-91 season opener, when the trio combined for 15 points in a 7-4 Penguins’ victory over the Washington Capitals at the Capital Centre in Washington, D.C.

While all three players starred, it was Stevens who shined the brightest, establishing an NHL record for points on opening night with six (2G-4A) — a mark that still stands 20 years later.

Stevens opened the scoring, tallying 4:58 into the first period off a Cullen helper to stake the Penguins to a 1-0 lead.

He would later add his second goal of evening — the game-winner — at 12:45 of the third period to break a tie and give the Penguins a 5-4 lead.

Not long after Stevens lit the lamp for the second time in the game, he picked up assists No. 3 and 4 as he and Cullen helped set up a pair of Recchi insurance tallies.

Tom Barrasso picked up the win in goal, stopping 20 of 24 shots along the way, while 18-year-old rookie sensation Jaromir Jagr finished the night with one shot on goal and a plus-two rating in his NHL debut.

In addition to Stevens’ record-setting performance, Recchi (2G-2A) and Cullen (5A) also matched the scoring exploits of the hulking winger.

The Stevens-Cullen-Recchi unit continued its strong play throughout the 1990-91 season, as each was named to the all-star game in Chicago later that year.

ROLEXDan Bylsma suspects the Penguins will figure out the identifying quirks and

characteristics of their new home eventually, but as the inaugural season at CONSOL

Energy Center began last week those remained open to discovery and interpretation.

“We’re still trying to work some other things into our game before we really figure out

how deep center field is in Detroit’s stadium,” Bylsma said. “We haven’t gotten to that

level of the playbook.

“It’s not quite a home-field advantage where we say ‘we know we can do this on a

power play,’ or ‘shoot wide of the net and it’s going to come right out for us.’ We don’t

have that yet.”

Growing up in

Michigan, Bylsma

undoubtedly recognized

almost immediately

upon his first visit to

Detroit’s old stadium,

Tiger Stadium, that

center field was 440

feet deep and that the

flag pole was in play.

Those were two of the

grand old ballpark’s

unique attributes.

The CONSOL Energy

Center is much more

ornate and much

less obvious.

The dimensions are

NHL regulation; it’s not

a band box like the

old Boston Garden with its

almost non-existent neutral zone. There are no steps to climb from the locker room to

the ice, as was the case in old Chicago Stadium. And since the circus has yet to arrive

(Lady Gaga doesn’t count in this instance) it doesn’t smell like Madison Square Garden

at playoff time.

So far all we really know is the ice isn’t quite up to the standard set by Rexall Place

in Edmonton.

The Penguins have already begun to discover whether the glass atop the boards is

forgiving upon contact, as it was at Mellon Arena, or if it’s similar to what some players

refer to as the “concussion glass” in Montreal and Toronto.

“The one, probably, big difference [from Mellon

Arena] is the boards are much livelier,” Bylsma said. “I

don’t know if that’s because they’re brand new, but the

boards are livelier.

“The angles of the corners are shallower. There are

more pucks that will bounce into or towards the front

of the net on dump-ins and so forth. That’s not to say

the Mellon didn’t have a few goofy bounces off the

glass, there were.

“I think there’s one end in particular [at CONSOL] that

when you dump it around it’s susceptible to having it

come out in front of the net. How much have we done?

Not a ton. Have we worked on some shots off the end

boards with our defensemen? Yeah. And everyone’s

talked a little bit about the bounce in the boards.

“There are some bounces out there. We’ve seen

a couple of them. But I’m not sure it’s a home-court

advantage yet.”

That the Penguins must establish gradually, not just by figuring out the boards and the

ice but by consistently winning games.

“I was happy to see us have success here in the preseason,” Bylsma said. “And normally

we don’t have three home games, so it was an advantage getting on that ice for games.

“But that’s something we have to establish here in our building. When teams

come in we have to have a ‘homer’ mentality and the crowd, we have to see where

that’s at in making it difficult on the other team, the energy in the building, the bounces

on the boards.

“I love the energy in the building so far. But winning games, making this home-ice

advantage, making this a tough place to play and having teams not want to come and

play here is something we still have to build.”

Becoming more at ease in their new surroundings should help along those lines.

Although the CONSOL Energy Center has pretty much been universally endorsed by the

Penguins as more than they could have hoped for, there’s a certain intimidation factor that

even they have to get used to before the place can truly become the team’s new home.

Initially, at least, no one wanted to eat in the living room for fear of staining the carpet.

Eventually, they’ll become comfortable in their new digs, even if and when someone

spills a cup of coffee.

“I think some of the hesitation about it being so nice and so luxurious has gone away,”

Bylsma said. “It won’t completely go away until we win some games here.”

Initially, at least, no one

wanted to eat in the

living room for fear of

staining the carpet.

Hockey season is officially in full force in Western Pennsylvania, where the St. Margaret’s Fall Face-Off tournament recently kicked off the start of a brand new Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League season.

The PIHL has come a long way from its inaugural seven-team 1971 season. Hockey’s surge in popularity throughout the Pittsburgh region has catapulted the number of high school teams from seven 40 years ago to 77 this season, with each team providing something to look forward to every season.

With the influx of talent coming from all teams, it is difficult to project how this season will go. But one thing is certain — there won’t be a shortage of excitement and intensity as last year’s champions try to defend their titles. Returning stars will be striving to continue their success while fresh new faces hope to make their mark in each of the PIHL’s four classifications.

While defending champions Canon McMillan (AAA), Latrobe (AA) and Mars (A) are poised to make another run at the Penguins Cup in their respective classes, there are plenty of teams who would have no problem knocking those teams off their lofty perches.

“Scholastic sports are very cyclical,” PIHL Commissioner Ed Sam said. “You can have a good team one year, but if they’re all seniors, you won’t have that same team again next year. But in this case, I think these teams will be very competitive.”

There is no doubt that the potential of playing in the Penguins Cup in March is what every player strives for. This season packs a little more incentive for teams, as this is the first time the championship games will be played in the brand new CONSOL Energy Center.

The race to play at CONSOL Energy Center officially begins on Oct. 18 when the PIHL opens the 2010-11 season.

To follow all of this season’s top high school action, visit the PIHL’s official website, pihlweb.com, for up-to-date scores, schedules, rosters and statistics.

WASTE MANAGEMENTIt was December 15, 2005. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had rattled off a

record of 21-1-2-1, the best in franchise history. Michel Therrien and Mike Yeo, who guided a talented Penguins squad to the top of the league standings, were promoted to Pittsburgh to take over the coaching duties — the start of a trend of promotions from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to Pittsburgh over the next few years.

Steady defenseman and captain Alain Nasreddine had already posted a plus-13 rating in that time frame along with six assists. He was continuing to solidify a blue line that was poised to keep the number of regulation losses for that Penguins team in the single digits all the way into April. But with that coaching change came a bit of a character change for the Montreal native. Former head coach Joe Mullen used Nasreddine as a player-coach because of the combination of his likeable demeanor and gritty play on the ice.

Nasreddine, however, said his coaching career started even before that.

“When I hit the age of 26 or 27, I really started to like helping the younger players,” Nasreddine remembered. “It was something that helped me to get a job every year.”

Because of a relatively new league rule, however, a person holding that dual role was unable to wear the captain’s “C” on the front of his jersey. So Nasreddine decided to return to the player role, feeling that he had more years ahead of him.

It seemed to work. He was called up to Pittsburgh in the following 2006-07 season, and spent the time from November onward in the NHL. He registered his first NHL goal against his hometown Canadiens. He made the NHL Penguins right out of training camp in 2007-08. He returned to Wilkes-Barre to help the team all the way to Game Six of the Calder Cup Finals against the Chicago Wolves. And after gutting it out for two more years in Nuremburg, Germany, “Naz” decided to call it a career once the call came for coaching in mid-August.

“When I found out that I got the job, it was tough to erase the smile off my face,” Nasreddine said about returning to Wilkes-Barre. “Hockey is my life and my passion, and now that we’re turning the page after being a hockey player I can transfer that passion over to coaching. This is something I knew I was going to do after I was done playing. The timing and everything, this is a little surprising, but to be in Wilkes-Barre where I spent five years, it’s the best thing I could have asked for and I’m so grateful.” Nasreddine felt that he had a little bit more left in the tank last season, but a bad knee

and an aching body started changing his mind.“I hadn’t really thought about anything else other than playing one more year,”

Nasreddine said. “But when it came to my attention that this position was open, it was pretty easy for me to go on with this process and give myself a chance to be considered. I went through many interviews, it went well, and coach Hynes and I had a good discussion. I couldn’t have been more excited.”

Many former players were making up the rumor buzz as to who would replace John Hynes as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton assistant, who in turn replaced Todd Reirden as head coach — Dennis Bonvie and David Gove, to name two — but when Nasreddine’s name came up in the official announcement, it came as a positive surprise to everyone.

What shouldn’t come as a surprise, though, is Nasreddine’s commitment to the team and the community. The fans never forgot “Naz” as a player, and he never forgot the area after being away.

“Even when I was away the past few years, I went on the internet and kept following the team. I knew exactly what was going on. I talked to Jeff Barrett and what they’ve done with the new facility, and to be able to work in an environment like that I feel privileged and it will only make our jobs easier.”

For Nasreddine, his obvious job will be to coach the

team’s defensemen and run the penalty kill — something he did steadily in his 249-game playing career with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. After already helping run the squad through a demanding prospects tournament in London, Ontario, a grueling training camp here in Wilkes-Barre, and a four-game-in-five-nights’ preseason, Nasreddine is itching to get the regular season going.

And although it may sound a little different for a while, “Coach Naz” has a nice ring to it.

Nasreddine played 15 years of professional hockey, including five seasons with the Penguins organization.

On January 1, 2008, in a game for the ages at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY, the Penguins and Sabres took to the great outdoors … and the NHL Winter Classic was born. A National Hockey League attendance record setting crowd of 71,217 witnessed as the Penguins prevailed, 2-1. Sidney Crosby’s shootout-winner amid the snowfall turned the final page on the game’s storybook ending.

The success of the 2008 NHL Winter Classic led to it becoming an annual event played on New Year’s Day in a different NHL city. Here’s a summary of the matchups and locations for each game.

General Manager Ray Shero

has a rule when it comes to

signing role players: Two-year

contracts, no longer.

But Shero broke that

guideline this past off-season

when he inked winger Matt

Cooke to a three-year pact.

“I have nothing but good

things to say about the

Penguins,” Cooke said. “They

were more than fair with me.

“At the end of the day,

maybe they were afraid of

playing against me, and that’s

why I got the extra year.”

Let’s just say the Penguins

saw premium value in the

5-foot-11, 205-pounder, worth

that goes beyond Cooke’s

statistics.

Cooke’s numbers weren’t bad

last year, either: 15 goals and

15 assists in the regular season,

four goals and two assists in 13

playoff contests.

But Cooke isn’t a stats guy. If

he’s on your team, you love him.

If he’s not, you hate him. No

middle ground.

This year’s version of the

Penguins sees Cooke joined by

plenty of like-minded individuals. In preseason, Cooke skated on a line with newly-acquired

winger Arron Asham and center Max Talbot, two others known for stirring the pot.

PENSPENSPENS PROFILE PROFILE PROFILEMATTMATTMATT COOKE COOKE COOKE

continued on page 141

Last season Matt Cooke recorded 15 goals and 15 assists in the regular season, four goals and

two assists in 13 playoff contests.

140

COOKE THINKS THE PENGUINS ARE READY FOR A BIG SEASON. HE WAS IMPRESSED BY THE CLUB’S PRESEASON.

141

continued from page 139

If that line stays together, it might be declared illegal, perhaps deported. The trio made

its debut together in the Penguins’ exhibition game Sept. 24 at Columbus. They turned

the whole building venomous after just a couple of shifts.

But Cooke, Asham and Talbot did far more than hack and whack. They moved the puck

with surprising precision.

“All three of us think the game the same,” said Cooke. “We go after it. We’re all-in

players. Being on that line and the role we’d have would be a fun opportunity. We all want

to help the team win. Wherever we end up, we’ll do our best.

“When you think the game the same, you know where the other guys are going to be. It

makes the game that much easier and allows you to move the puck.”

Cooke hesitated when asked to identify the line’s biggest troublemaker.

“It depends what you consider to be trouble,” said Cooke, laughing. “I guess I’m the

one that creates the most ruckus. People take runs at me and take shots at me. Ash is

going to create a lot of stuff, too, with his physical play and ability to back it up. And Max’s

mouth goes a mile a minute. He tends to know what upsets people most.”

Cooke and Asham share a past. When Asham played for Philadelphia last year, he

accused Cooke of biting his hand during a scrum. When Asham signed with the Penguins,

Cooke called him to clear the air.

“Now we’re on the same team, trying to accomplish the same goals,” Cooke said. “Stuff

tends to get quickly pushed aside.

“When I played for Canada in the 2004 World Championships, I’d had quite a few

battles with most of the defensemen on that team. The first time you meet them — it’s not

intimidating, but it’s awkward. But you very quickly get over it.”

Cooke is also being considered for duty on Evgeni Malkin’s line. Nice work if you can

get it.

“I’ve had the opportunity to play with Geno a little bit and with Sid [Crosby] a little bit,”

Cooke said. “No matter who I’m out there with, I play my game. I’m going to try and get

a player like Geno the puck as much as possible. Any opportunity I have to get in on the

forecheck, create turnovers and get the puck back to him, I’m looking to do that.”

Cooke thinks the Penguins are ready for a big season. He was impressed by the

club’s preseason.

“It was, by far, the most competitive training camp I’ve ever been at in terms of

competition at every position,” Cooke said. “Some players came to camp knowing they

were going to get sent down, but that didn’t stop them from putting their best foot

forward and showing that they’re making the right strides.”

At 32, Cooke is a veteran on a very young team. He thinks the losses of vets like Sergei

Gonchar and Bill Guerin can be minimized: “Some guys don’t get the experience over

10 years of their career that this group has gotten over the past two. There’s enough

experience in this room to lead us to where we want to be.”
