Review: What is an adjective?

• Write 5 adjectives on your paper.

• Work with your partner to pick 5 best adjectives between both of you.

Page 3: Iceland Iv

Comparing• When you compare two things that are

different, use the comparative form of adjectives.

• To form the comparative, add “er” to the adjective and put “than” after the adjective.

– Adjective + er + than

Example: Iceland is colder than Mexico

Mexico is bigger than Iceland.

Page 4: Iceland Iv

• If the adjective ends in y, change the y to i and add er.– happy -> happier easy -> easier

• If the adjective ends in e, add r– wide -> wider fine -> finer

• If the adjective ends in one consonant and there is one vowel before it, double the consonant.– big -> bigger hot -> hotter

“er” versus “more”

• When the adjective has more than 2 syllables, we put “more” in front of the adjective and “than” after.– More + adjective + than.

Example: New York City is more expensive than Mexico

City.Manhattan is more crowded than Queens.
