AAMI Credentials Institute (ACI) now offers the independent certification testing in the areas of biomedical, clinical lab and radiology formerly offered by the International Certification Commission (ICC). The radiological endorsement is called Certification for Radiological Equipment Specialist (CRES). The test consists of a series of multiple choice questions divided into 5 sections. Up to 6 hours are allowed for completing the exam. This 8-hour course is designed to teach the experienced service professional the requisite knowledge necessary to successfully pass the radiological portion of the CRES test. The subjects include radiation physics, radiation safety, anatomy, physiology, X-ray equipment use, CDRH compliance testing, electronics and troubleshooting. Sample testing during this program helps to reinforce good testing techniques and confidence in the process.

Sherman AbernathyDirector of Imaging Equipment Services, ENTECH for Banner Health

Sherman Abernathy began in the imaging business in 1980 working for GE Medical Systems as a laboratory technician where he gained technical knowledge on CT and MRI technology as systems were assembled and QA tested prior to delivery to hospitals.

Sherman gathered his learned experiences and entered the field service arena beginning with GE Medical and several third-party service vendors over the next 15 years, including Medical Systems Engineering-Mediq/Innoserv Technologies-Genesis Medical-Platinum Medical.

When the nation elected to increase airport security, Sherman accepted a position with In-Vision Technologies to assist in the installation of X-ray baggage inspection devices and CT scanner technology in the airport baggage handling systems for the TSA in the United States and Europe.

Sherman’s current challenge has been focused on building an internal support team of imaging engineers across all modalities for Banner Health in the Phoenix area. MRI and CT have been a career-long special interest topic for Sherman, and he welcomes the opportunity to share his knowledge at every opportunity.

Angelic BushMSRS, CRA, RT(R)(CT)(MR), FAHRA, Administrative Director of Radiology, University of Texas Medical Branch

Angelic “Angie” Bush is a United States Air Force-trained radiology technologist who has been an imaging leader for 22 years. She is currently the director of radiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. She holds a master’s degree in radiologic science administration from Midwestern State University. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles, spoken nationally on both cardiac and diagnostic imaging subjects, was president of the AHRA (2017-2018), an Aunt Minnie finalist for most effective radiology administrator in 2016 and 2017. An official “Yellow Rose of Texas” and a John Levitow Award winner. But she is prouder still to call herself a genuine data geek who simply loves the imaging field. She makes a game of stealing ideas from her husband, Curt Bush, and can often be found complaining about their 4 a.m. morning run that allows her to have an adult beverage that evening.

Curtis “Curt” Bush currently serves as the director of imaging services at HCA Houston Medical Center in Houston, Texas, a position he has held since May. Prior to that, he was the director of diagnostic and therapeutic imaging services at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, and has held director positions in Texas, Florida and Wisconsin. He has a bachelor’s degree in nuclear medicine technology from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, and dual master’s degrees from Troy University in health care and business administration. Curt has spoken as several national and regional conferences; is a fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives, a fellow with the AHRA, and a certified radiology administrator.

Brenda DeBastiani is the director of imaging at Mon Health Medical Center. She has 33 years of experience in imaging, which includes 18 years of leadership experience. She received a bachelor’s degree from Fairmont State University and received her MBA from Waynesburg University in December 2019. She is an active AHRA member and has been a certified radiology administrator since 2007. She was the recipient of the 2012 Award for Excellence from the AHRA and received her fellow status in the AHRA in 2014. Brenda is currently on the AHRA Board of Directors and proclaims to be a life-long learner.

Dale Cover joined RSTI in 1990. In his 25 years with RSTI he has held positions as lab instructor, technical instructor, senior instructor and training manager. He has worked in the health care and medical device industries since 1986 and, academically at Penn State University, since 2000. Over the past few years, Ted has worked with large national account customers assisting them with qualifying their service providers, refining their buying criteria relative to medical device repair services and maximizing the life cycle of their radiological devices. Steve Maull is a 1990 graduate of Miami University where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In 1991, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served 11 years as a BMET and BMET instructor. In 2001, after leaving the Air Force, he became an instructor at DITEC where he was an X-ray instructor until 2007. While at DITEC, he also developed training courses for clinical laboratory equipment, networking and PACS/DICOM courses. In September of 2008, he created Maull Biomedical Training which teaches operation, PM, calibration and repair on contrast injectors.

Katherine Mohr is an extremely energetic, resourcefully ambitious, CT department manager who works at a large, urban, academic training center, boasting the saving power of the “golden hour” in their level I trauma center. Katherine’s greatest on-the-job pleasure comes from mentoring. Witnessing the confident changes as each employee grows into a productively collaborative member of the team.

Katherine is a graduate of Notre Dame of Maryland University, with a bachelor’s degree in radiology science and a master’s degree in leadership and management. Additionally, in November of 2013, she became a certified radiology administrator. Cheryl believes that the foundation of solid clinical practice lies in effective and applicable education and training. She has extensive involvement in professional societies including the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, American Society of Radiologic Technologists, the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, Association of Educators in Imaging and Radiologic Sciences, and the Latin American Radiology Outreach organization. Cheryl was awarded the 2018 Harold Silverman Distinguished Author award, a 2015 ASRT Foundation Scholarship and the 2012 Chattanooga State Community College “Eye of the Tiger” Outstanding Educator accolade.

Cheryl completed her doctorate from Liberty University in 2016, with a focus on education in radiation oncology settings. She has proven excellence in research and publication on local, state and national levels. Cheryl presented at the 20th International Society of Radiographers and Radiological Technologist World Congress, at the 2017 and 2018 ASRT annual conferences and at the 2019 AHRA yearly meeting. In addition to numerous local presentations and publications, she has written for national professional journals including ASRT’s Scanner and Radiation Therapist. In 2015, Cheryl co-authored the ASRT’s “Proton Therapy Continuing Education Modules.”

Nicole Walton-TrujilloR.T., Imaging Facility Director, Desert Radiology

Nicole Walton-Trujillo is an imaging director for a large outpatient imaging practice that sees the same number of patients daily that most critical access hospitals see in a day. She has spent the last few years focusing on her education as well as building a bridge of communication and understanding between the front-line clinicians and the executive leadership team within medicine. She uses the information and analytics that the biomed team gives her to make effective change within the facility’s daily workflows as well as address the bigger budget picture.

Jef Williams has worked in the medical imaging and health IT space for more than 15 years. He has led multiple initiatives providing technical and organizational expertise. His expertise lies in architecture and standards associated with medical imaging including technical design, data management processes, vendor selection, workflow and dataflow design and analysis, system optimization efforts and analytics solutions for the advancement of evidence-based decision making. He has worked with providers, vendors, global entities, consultancies and startups within the health IT space. He is widely published and participates in several industry societies in an effort to advance standards and practice improvement of technology and clinical support.
