DFW Tier 1 Elite Hockey League ScheduleThe Tier 1 Elite Hockey League U16 & U18 Dallas Showcase

will be coming up from February 1st through 3rd at the Dr. Pepper Starcenter’s in Farmers Branch & Valley Ranch as the Dallas Stars Elites U16 & U18 Teams will be playing their final showcase of the regular season coming up this weekend as the U16 Team is going to be in the upcoming T1EHL Championship as they were ranked just outside the top 5 at the last rankings. While the U18 Team is fighting to get in as they are at this point, one of the first teams out of the T1EHL Championship Weekend and are battaling with the LA Jr. Kings for the West Division Title where it could set up where only the Division Champions will make it through. Look for an attachment with the upcoming T1EHL Showcase Schedule next weekend. Even if the U18’s don’t make the Championship Rounds, they will be a Consulation Round so they will be making the trip reguardless of how they finish the rankings and final regular season standings for the bottom 8 teams. Meanwhile, some of the other area AAA Teams are beginning to look forward to the playoffs including both Texas Tornado Teams at the U18 & U16 both made the NAPHL Championship events that will take place in Troy, Michigan from 2/15-18 as the 8th Seeds as both teams finished 2nd in their division as the NAPHL Regular Season ended over the weekend. Meanwhile the Alliance Bulldogs U16 played in their final T1EHL Showcase of the season as a partial member in the T1EHL and currently have no games scheduled between right now and the TAHA Tier 1 State Tournament. When the T1EHL Showcase begins on 2/1, all the U16 Games will be at the Valley Ranch Starscenter while the U18 Games will be in Farmers Branch with the League Championship Events coming up from February 15-18 in Blaine, Minnesota. As for the Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League (DSTHL) the regular season is expected to wrap up on February 10th or 17th (Depending on the Age Group) with the playoffs expected to get started on the weekend of February 24th and the league championships to be awarded out the weekend of March 9 & 10th. However, this does not determine which teams will go to Nationals

where the TAHA Tier 1 & Tier 2 State Tournament’s going on from February 22-24th. The Tier 1 State Tournament will be between the Dallas Stars Elites & Alliance Bulldogs in a Best of 3 Series that will set up the seedings for the USA Hockey Tier 1 Rocky Mountain Regional Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Tier 2 Teams will be determined through the State Tournament Qualifiers that are going on right now. The U18 Tier 2 Age Groups, we have seen the Allen Americans defeat the Dallas Jr. Stars & the Alliance Bulldogs pulling an upset over the defending U18 Tier 2 National Champion Dallas Oilers that swept their Best of 3 Series. While the McKinney Lightning will travel down to Houston to play the Houston Wild for their Best of 3 Series during the weekend of February 2nd & 3rd down in Houston. They will do the same thing for both the U16 & U14 Tier 2 Age Groups as

well. The Tier 2 State Champions will go directly to National’s that will be going on from April 3-7 in different places across the country. In addition to the Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League Playoffs, the dates for the Southwest Select Hockey Series Championship Events are also beginning to be revealled as well as those events will be going on throughout the Month of February and it’s looks like that many of the events will be at the Richardson Ice Training Center.

For the Girls, the Tier 1 & Tier 2 Girls Regional Championship will be at the Farmers Branch Starscenter from March 1-3 with the Champions going to Nationals that will be in San Jose, California that same weekend. ■

Balance is crucial for a hockey player’s development. Without this athletic skill

it becomes near impossible to play the game. Hockey players have to be able to function just like any other athlete would but on an eighth of an inch wide piece of metal while on an ice surface. When you think about it logically it seems pretty crazy. Regardless this is something we must overcome and focus on In order to continue improvement in the wonderful sport of Hockey. There are several areas of performance that we can directly link to balance, Skating being first and foremost. Many player’s,

especially young ones, struggle with their skating ability due to their balance and or their lack of experience in skating movements. Players need time to learn the correct form and developing the muscle memory to stay there, while developing the stability to skate. Another area is the physical aspect of the game and this is true at all levels. Even big strong players can struggle to overcome in game battles and body checks. This is because your ability to balance does not directly correlate

too strength, but when applying that strength effectively to stay balanced is what keeps you standing. Another factor is one’s ability to shoot, Staying balanced in the proper form while taking a shot can affect the accuracy of the shot. Many techniques can be utilized in order to increase balance. Doing single leg squats and lunges are a start. Adding those simple drills to uneven surfaces like a Bosu or balance board can increase the difficulty. Working on core strength and stability is also important, things like body bridges and V-Position holds are valuable. I also like to add in external

unknown forces, for example, I may have a teammate push or pull another athlete in random directions while they are trying to maintain their balance as another method for advanced difficulty. I would like to wish all of our players luck as we get closer to playoffs and the state tournament. I hope we all have an excellent finish to an excellent season. As always if you have any questions you may email us at [email protected].■

Hat Trick!“Hi, I’m Roger Smith, team manager and Asst. Coach of the Lone Star Wolves U16A team, coached by Steve Schneider. We recently had a game in San Antonio against the Rampage on November 3rd. It was a very close and intense game (as evidenced by the penalties), until one of our players did a very amazing thing. Kyle Torgerson, a 16 year old player that has been with the Wolves for several years, scored a natural hat trick (three goals in a row) in the span of 15 seconds.” ■

Coppell Girl Named to International SelectsHockey ProgramBuffalo, NY – The Selects Hockey organization has selected Hannah Bilka from Coppell, Texas at their annual major peewee international tryout held January 1st in Buffalo, NY to join the international program with the East Coast Selects hockey team. More than 300 invited girls from across North America competed for 68 positions on 4 teams, with those selected to participate in the program’s international spring training development camp and the World Selects Invitational in Stockholm, Sweden this April. Participants will be submerged into foreign cultures and face top international competition in this once in a lifetime experience. “Hannah Bilka was superb on Jan. 1st. She not only showed she has the skill to be a top hockey prospect but also demonstrated great leadership and passion on the ice,” commented Kathy Pippy (Director of Girls’ Hockey for the Selects Hockey program). The selection committee consisted of independent hockey evaluators including ECS head coach and former Olympian Manon Rheaume; ECS head coach and former NCAA player Abby Greenbaum, Jesse Driscoll of the North American Hockey Academy and Kathy Pippy,

Director of Girls’ Hockey for Selects Hockey and other professional hockey scouts. Selects Hockey is an elite hockey prospect development program owned by Legacy Global Sports. Since 2003, Selects Hockey has worked with top 12-16-year-old hockey players across North America and Europe to expose them to all avenues of hockey in an effort to facilitate opportunities at the prep school, NCAA, Junior and Professional levels. Selects Hockey’s growing list of NHL alumni is led by future stars Matt Duchene (Colorado Avalanche), Logan Couture (San Jose Sharks), Kevin Shattenkirk (St. Louis Blues), Sam Gagner (Edmonton Oilers) and Ryan O’Reilly (Colorado Avalanche). For the Good of the GameBy Keith Andresen

Keith Andresen

Hockey in the Metroplex has seen phenomenal growth over the past decade. Hockey in the

non-traditional hockey markets is booming and participants of all ages are playing the games at all skill levels. Dallas/Ft. Worth has become a mecca for youth hockey coaches wanting to earn a living by providing quality instruction to young players. There are also numerous volunteer coaches who dedicate their time to house, high school and select programs. With all this growth our region has become recognized for quality hockey teams that compete very well with teams from around the world. Successful teams work hard, develop skills and teach young athletes proper training techniques both on and off the ice. While these “ingredients for success” are important, there are two “ingredients” that are equally as important; FUN and PASSION. Developing a pass ion for the game and making each trip to the rink fun are critical in the development of all young players. Just as skill development and hard work make a player improve physically, fun and passion keep the fire and desire burning inside. It’s what makes an 8 year-old jump out of bed at 6 AM for an early morning game or practice. It’s what makes a 45 year-old go to the rink at 11PM for a beer league game. As coaches and parents, there are things you can do to help make sure passion is developed and not inhibited. A good coach will help players realize their potential while making sure they have fun and develop a passion for the game. I believe there are several important ways coaches can help build passion in their players: First and foremost a coach must have a positive attitude. Coaches must use positive reenforcement when working with today’s kids. I think a 10-1 ratio of positive v. negative instruction is critical in getting the most out of each player. While it’s important to correct mistakes, it’s equally important to do it in a positive way. In most cases, yelling at a player will only cause that player to “tune-out.” When correcting mistakes, don’t yell, teach. Second, allow players the space they need to

grow as individuals and as a team. Don’t micro-manage. Allow your team to create an environment in the locker room by letting each player exhibit their personality. The bonds that are formed between the players off the ice will carry over to the games and practices. However keep an eye out for any disciplinary issues and deal with them in a fair and consistent manner without causing embarrassment to any single player. Finally, coaches must create a fun environment for their team. Many coaches are afraid that by promoting fun they will lose the opportunity to win. In my experience I have found the opposite to be true. When an environment is created that includes fun while promoting skill, hard work and character,

the winning takes care of itself. Every team faces adversity

dur ing a season , however, it’s the team that keeps a positive attitude when things

are not going well that persevere. Positive

attitude will be easy to cultivate when everyone has a smile on

his or her face. Remember to smile; it’s contagious!

Just a Thought: As a player, you must be prepared

to play when you arrive at the rink. If your coach requires you to arrive 60 minutes prior to game time, be on time and be prepared. That means that you’re not running around the rink getting your skates sharpened, taping your stick or replacing screws on your helmet. Keep your equipment in good order and check it at home to make sure you are ready to play. Don’t be a distraction to your team; be prepared when you arrive at the rink. ■Reprinted from November 2010 Issue.

Cosmo’s Tip of the MonthLower Body TrainingBy Cosmo Clarke

While upper body strength is important for hockey players, it should be last on your list of priorities. Core of your torso comes first, followed by your legs, and then upper body exercises. Hockey, like other power sports, relies on the strength and power generated by the legs. Your upper body exercises should not occupy more than 40% of your time in the weight room. When pressed for time, always train your legs.Athletics demand a great deal of leg strength, but more importantly they demand single leg strength. In most sports you are usually on one leg at a time, not two. To develop the type of speed, balance and agility needed in hockey, then it is necessary to do single leg exercises. The following three exercises provide a good place to start in the development of single leg strength.
