THE ITALIAN ICT MARKETIn the wake of the economic crisis, the year 2013 hasconfirmed the negative trend of the Italian ICT sector, alreadyemerged in 2012. The main cause of such trend has beenthe lack of investment in new technologies (new devices, applications, forms of communication and entertainment).Despite technological progress and the growing supply ofnew products, which are replacing the „traditional“ ones, the total value of the Italian digital market shrank by 4.4%compared to 2012, reaching just over 65 billion Euro. Inaddition, consumption registered a decrease of 2.6% after-4% in 2012, while gross fixed investments decreased by4.6%. Among the macro-areas of the Italian digital marketwhich recorded a negative trend, one could mention:

Devices and systems; in particular:1)Sales of desktop PCs (including hardware components)reached 1.36 million units (-11.2%) for a value of € 485million, -13.7% compared to 2012.2)Sales of notebooks dropped by 18.7% (3.100.00 units).Prices are dropping and the market value has reached about890 million Euro, - 20.5% compared to 2012.

The ICT services have registered a decline of -2.7%.However, in the second half of 2013 the Italian digitalmarket showed a slight improvement generated by thefollowing categories:

• Sales of smartphones, which reached 12.3 million unitssold (+ 43%) and a value of more than 2.6 billion Euro(+ 13.8%). Tablets sales also reachedd over 3.4 millionunits sold (+ 42.2%)

• Growth of ICT infrastructure (+ 2.2%), with a total valueof 5.133 billion Euro, have affected 30% of the market

• The application software market (+ 3.7%), and ICTsolutions on premise (+ 2.7%)

• IOT platforms and Web management (respectively +13.8% and + 12.4%)

• The cloud market (+ 46.2%)• The Italian market of security data (+ 0.9%). Within such

niche, the software (+ 25%) and services (+ 0.5%)segments stand out

Overall in Europe, the digital market has also not revealeda promising trend. The economic crisis that hit Italy first,in 2013 spread to further European countries. Consequentlyan overall continental ICT market decline of 0.9% (about1.083 billion dollars) compared to 2012 was registered.By analyzing in detail the four main European markets:France, UK, Spain and Germany, we can observe that inFrance, the digital market was affected by the overall ne-gative trend, yet the final outcome has been morepromising (-1.1% vs. -1.9% in 2012). The UK has confirmedthe same trend of 2012, recording a decrease of 2.5%,equal to 148 billion Euro. In Spain, the economic crisisaffected the digital market through a negative growth of6.6%. The only country to have positive growth wasGermany, thanks to its digital content & advertising, software& ICT solutions markets (respectively + 8.3% and + 8.2%).

THE ITALIAN TELECOMMUNICATIONS BRANCHThe telecommunications sector in Italy recorded in 2013 aconsiderable negative trend, the overall market did notexceed a value of 24.9 billion Euro (-10% compared to2012). The sectorial crisis hit in particular the fixed andmobile network services (-10.2%). Also the mobile networksegment has decreased sharply in comparison to theprevious year (-13.8% for a value of 14.72 billion Euro),resulting mainly from the fall of returns from calls (-23.2%),whose revenues have decreased from 10,3 to 7.9 billionEuro. Also the value of fixed telephony services decreasedup to 5.75 billion Euro (-7.7% compared to 2012). However, the business infrastructure for the distribution of serviceson fixed and mobile networks has recorded a slightly posi-tive growth (+ 2%).Compared to 2012, investments for the development offixed networks have increased (+ 6.8%, for a value of 1,420million Euro). In addition, several projects have beeninitiated for the construction of LTE / 4G cellular networks(+ 3.1% compared to 2012, for a value of € 2 billion Euro).

SET TOP BOXES AND SMART TVsAs in most European countries, also the Italian segment ofthe set top box (televisions and electronic equipment)suffered a sharp decline after the transition to digital TV.

This process resulted in a decrease of 35% in sales of suchequipment during 2013. However, in the course of 2015,a new system based on digital TV technology DVB-T2standard will be introduced all over the country. Thisevolution of the current DVB-T will provide a broader bandof approximately 30%. Smart TVs, which occupy high-end offer range, recorded a relative growth (+ 13.2%),which was lower than expected also compared to 2012.

CLOUD COMPUTING AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCEThe cloud computing industry is transforming the digitalmarket by simplifying and speeding up IT processes forboth businesses and consumers. It is a sector still indevelopment, which has witnessed a growing trend in2013 by 32% (both private and public distribution). About20% of the business is composed by support services tobusinesses (cloud transformation and cloud transition) andplatform development projects. The rest is composed byPaaS (7%); SaaS (36%) and IaaS (37%). Even the BusinessIntelligence market showed a positive trend (+ 1.6%) andreached a value of € 456 million. Such value was alsopositivly influenced by the increased sales of softwarecomponent (+ 2.6%) and services (+ 1.0%).Within this sector also big data and business analytics playa major role, especially in relation to future developments. The increasing necessity of companies to process a greaternumber of data and information will lead to thedevelopment of new tools within Marketing (socialmonitoring, social listening and social intelligence), Hu-man Resources, Supply Chain / Operations & Governance,Risk & Compliance. During 2014, among the many BIdevelopments, data visualization has been a key issue.

E-COMMERCE AND E-BOOKS IN ITALYThe value of the e-commerce market in Italy - generatedby the sales of consumer products and services from Italiansites - reached 11.3 billion Euro (+ 18%). Within the branchsales of consumer products (+ 25%) have had the strongestimpact on the positive trend, while the services componentcontributed through a smaller increase (+ 13%). Withinthe latter category, the main element is related to tourism(mainly ticketing) which totals 43% of revenues, followed

by insurances which amounted to 10%.As for the components related to consumer products, thesector continues to play a major role (12%), followed byinformation technology and electronics (11%), publishing(3%), grocery (1%) and e-books, which recorded a growthof 79% and revenues by 43 million Euro.Despite the developments and product diversification whichhave taken place during the previous years, the e-commercemarket in Italy is still very concentrated: the top 20 playerscover 70% of the market. In 2013, the fashion industry has invested considerably inits e-commerce presence. Many clothing companies haveopened their e-commerce channels abroad while pursuinga policy of internationalization. First major projects in thefurniture industry scene - where the presence of e-commerceis still limited - have started to appear as well.Major support to the industry of online purchases wasprovided by the mobile devices (smartphones or tablets). The proliferation of smartphones and tablets amongconsumers considerably helped the Italian e-commercemarket to take off in 2013. Online shopping has quintupledits value of sales, rising from 144 million to 510 millionEuro. Purchases only via smartphone accounted for about4.5% of the total value of the market. In 2014, the sectorhas continued to grow sustained by three major trends:multi-channel (channel integration between online andmobile); social media (increased presence of companieson social networks) and personalization (consolidation ofcorporate online presence).

ITALY: AN INNOVATIVE COUNTRY FULL OF START-UPSIn the past years, the exponential growth of the use ofmobile devices, social networks, cloud computing and bigdata have modified and influenced the performance of theglobal economy. In the industrialized countries the digitalmarket accounts for about 5% - 9% of the national GDPsand is radically transforming the approach of companiesand SMEs towards their clients and consumers.Consequently many companies tend to digitize theirprocesses, both internally and externally. This context has enabled the birth of new businesses, whichbase their activities on digital technologies while utilizing

these to organize and structure themselves internally (forexample through cloud computing).Italy has been one of the protagonists who, between 2012and 2014, saw the birth of many innovative StartUps whichhave as their focus the field of digital technologies. Onlyin 2014, 1,792 new companies were registered, with ahigher density in the North Italy (59%) and a smaller, butstill substantial, in the Centre (23%) and the South (18%).On the national register there arre currently 3348 start-ups. Numerically these new businesses are geographicallydistributed as follows, major regions: Lombaria (355 newcompanies), Emilia Romagna (202), Veneto (126) and Lazio(187). Among the southern regions Campania (83), Apulia(76) and Sicily (63) stand out. The major StartUp cities areMilan (204), Turin (102), Rome (264), Trento (64) and Bolo-gna (73).The vast Majority of these companies provide services(software development, IT consultancy and management);a significant percentage are involved in manufacturing(mostly computers and other devices). Twenty-two of thosehave an annual revenue of 1 million € or more. In terms ofsector distribution services clearly stand out (1,149companies). These includes, among others, softwareproduction services, IT consulting and connected activities(464), scientific research and development (263),information services (117), architecture & engineeringtesting / analysis techniques (64), company managementand consulting (53). Industrial and artisan activities follow(264) succeeded by computer, electronic, and opticalmanufacturing (63), electric tools and electric tools for non-domestic use (31), alternative manufacturing (22) andproduction of transportation vehicles (15) - commerce (53),and, lastly, tourism (6) and agriculture (3). In particular,289 startups operate in the energy sector.

INVEST IN ITALY: WHY?In 2012, the Italian Ministry of Economic Development formeda task force to promote the creation and development ofstartups. Such initiative was accompanied by a set of reformswhich have simplified the setup procedures for newcompanies and have facilitated private investments flows.Such initiative has been named Digital Agenda (http://

www.agid.gov.it/agenda-digitale/agenda-digitale-italiana). Inthe same year the Council of Ministers approved a DecreeLaw containing „Further urgent measures for the growth ofthe country“ (DL 179/2012). Section 9 (articles 25-32)concerns specific measures to foster the creation anddevelopment of innovative startup enterprises. For this type of enterprise, a systematic and detailedframework of reference has now been established. Thisincludes the introduction of significant benefits in areassuch as tax, access to bank loans and risk capitalinvestments, the business internationalisation process, andlabour law. These measures encompass the startup’s entirelife cycle and place Italy’s legal framework in the forefrontwith respect to our main European partners. The law refersspecifically and explicitly to innovative startups tounderscore that its target is not any and all new enterprises, but those whose business is closely and strongly linked toinnovation and technology. To benefit from the supportmeasures, the innovative startup must:a) be new or have been operating for no longer than 4

years;b)have its head office in Italy;c) have annual sales of less than 5 million euros;d) not distribute profits;e) be engaged solely or primarily in technological

innovation;f) not have been created from a corporate merger or division

or following the divestment of a company or line ofbusiness;

g) meet at least one of the following additional criteria:a. devote at least 15% of its expenditure to research anddevelopment (R&D) activity; b. have at least one third ofits team composed of PhD students or graduates, or ofpersonnel who have been working in research for at least3 years; alternatively, at least two thirds should hold amaster’s degree; c. be the owner, filer or licensee of apatent, industrial property right, or original softwareregistered with the Società Italiana degli Autori ed Editori(Italian Society of Authors and Publishers – SIAE).

No less important for the development of a robustecosystem of innovative businesses is the role played byincubators. These are companies that host startups and

ICE AT CeBIT 2015THE ITALIAN MARKET

support business ideas deemed to offer the potential for ahigh economic return, but which are not yet ready to receivelarge-scale funding. Law 221/2012 defined certifiedincubators as capital companies, including cooperatives, that provide targeted incubation and acceleration servicesdesigned to support the creation or development of inno-vative startups. To obtain certification, these structures mustmeet certain requirements (defined by the Minister ofEconomic Development’s Decree of 22 February 2013).For example, the incubator must have adequate buildingsand equipment, and a technical and management structureof recognised competence. It must also be engaged incollaborative relationships with universities, researchcentres, public institutions and financial partners. Certifiedincubators must also have sufficient experience insupporting innovative startups. Certified incubators enjoysome of the special conditions applied to innovativestartups. The startup and incubator support policy isintended to foster sustainable growth, technologicaldevelopment and employment, the development of a newentrepreneurial mindset, and the creation of an ecosystemmore conducive to innovation. Other goals are to encouragegreater social mobility and attract foreign capital and talentto Italy. The Italia Startup Visa policy is designed to help achievethis last goal. It is the characteristics of the „system“ (macro-economic, bureaucratic, fiscal) that determine a country’sreputation on the global stage of innovative entrepreneurs-hip. The new equity crowdfunding model, the tax reliefon seed and venture capital investments and a reductionof red tape are just some of the measures introduced bythe Startup Law. They are steps on the road to making Italya more hospitable place for innovative enterprises, Italianand otherwise. Finally thanks to these reforms theconstitution and registration of innovative startups andincubators through the Chambers of Commerce is nowfree of charge.

COMPANY PROFILEAI2 Ltd. was born in Bari (ITALY) in 1991 as InnovationAgent for Manufacturing SMEs.Thanks to many technical skills acquired over the yearsand to the application of Project Management guidingprinciples (PMBOK), we have transformed a naturalinclination to problem solving into a real AGILE approach, applicable to the most challenging innovation projects. Thanks to a tough methodology (e.g. models, standards, etc.), a deep sense of responsibility and the passion tobuild a common and full awareness of the problems evenbefore their solutions, we have learned to effectively facethe challenging complexity of these projects, be they hu-man centred or mission critical. These principles have enabled a young, curious andcompetent team to make significant experiences in Busi-ness Process Reengineering and Mission Critical applicationsdevelopment. Working for local companies and authoritiesand for a major multinational company of the rail transportsector we have built a virtuous cycle that turns every newchallenge into an opportunity to acquire skills and to growup in our profession.Among other things, we have:• supported manufacturing companies in online detection

of production data and in generating management valuethrough proper use of their own information assets.

• led the Puglia Region to adopt a new Charter of CulturalHeritage aimed at enabling the representation andmanagement of different aspects of Cultural heritage, from real estate to movable assets, from intangibleheritage to cultural venues and events.

• analysed the processes of systems design for railwaysignalling and built tools to support new and moreefficient business processes and to elicitate, formalizeand reuse domain knowledge.

• designed and developed real-time software componentsthat implement the various features of a rail networksupervision system.

• described and implemented the concept of ServiceIntentions as a new benchmark for rail trafficmanagement.

Moreover, an articulated ten-year collaboration with theUniversity system and the recent leadership during LivingHeritage experience, an ICT living lab focused to CulturalHeritage, have allowed us to develop important innovationsin the production processes of digital content for CulturalHeritage communication. This new challenge is stimulatedby the opportunity to propose new user experiences andaimed at enabling large segments of users and experts totake part to a sustainable promotion of cultural heritage. One of the main steps of this path is represented by thedevelopment of the SWIPE STORY storytelling format andthe activation of the SWIPE STORY TEAM: a multidisciplinarybunch of storytelling experts, digital artists and professionalsof the ICT sector, committed to develop innovative user-oriented tools based on a mix of new languages, technologies and creativity, aimed at a fruitful interactionwith museums and cultural sites.

COMPANY’S STRENGHTS IN BRIEFThe company’s main strength is its know how in bringinginnovation into different types of processes, be they hu-man centered or mission critical. Our innovation processes are based both on a solidmethodological approach (we make extensive use of theAGILE approach), and on the ability to use cutting edge ICT.In this phase, one of most important goal of the SWIPESTORY TEAM is the SWIPE STORY CREATOR, an authoringtool that allows any author to use the SWIPE STORYmethodology to create high quality digital stories in a shorttime and at a minimal cost.A SWIPE-STORY can be considered a new format for thedigital storytelling. It is a digital tale that, using a simple and immediatelanguage based on draws, images, words, games, sounds, videos and emotions drives the user to a new, vivid andstimulating path of knowledge. Every Swipe Story uses aninnovative storytelling concept that:• Accepts and initiates the user to a new path of knowledge

(e.g. visit a museum);• Turns the path of knowledge into a vivid and challenging

experience, letting the user interact with the elementsthat surround him and increasing the emotionalinvolvement;

• Enhances the visit experiences favouring the consolidationof knowledge with insights, educational activities andgames.

Producing a SWIPE STORY means building a main talearound a plot and develop it through a succession of events,

spread into a series of frames that compose a sort of ribbon.Going from one scene to another is simple like swiping afinger on a touchscreen, triggering transitions over timeand transitions through space. These different possibilities of transition, along with othersthat are still being developed, can support a wide range ofnarrative solutions, allowing the authors to fully expressthe development of their creative ideas with the most dif-ferent languages. To enrich the emotional dimension of aSWIPE STORY, the transitions between frames arecharacterized by a parallax effect (Simulated 3D), wheredifferent levels of images, moving at different speeds, givedepth to the scenes. In addition to this, the possibility to insert in each frame asmany points of interest as one likes allows the authors todevelop the plot over the story. We are currently increasingthe types of points of interest with the activation of newuser experiences. Currently available types of POI are: Co-mics; Insights (multiple cards flipping on a two dimensionsmatrix containing text, images and audio); Curiosity (two-sided card with question/answer or suggestion/solution);Video clips; Matching games and puzzles.

POTENTIAL TYPES OF BUSINESS PARTNERSWe think we own a good methodology for digital contentproduction oriented toward cultural heritage communication, and our technological solutions can efficiently support asustainable production process. Therefore, we are interested in partnerships with companiesactive in cultural promotion and museum education withthe goal of integrating our SWIPE STORIES in their serviceofferings. We are also interested in expanding the possibilities ofusing SWIPE STORIES in digital content production for:• teaching. for interactive training and learning material.• publishing: for a new generation of interactive e-books;• for temporary exhibitions and cultural events;• company and product communication;• territorial promotion; We are also interested in activating partnerships withsoftware companies that develop frameworks or platformsfor the production and delivery of digital content and gamesfor various application domains. Our ambition of applying the SWIPE STORY methodologyto every possible application context needs the activationof collaborations and joint ventures with scientific, technicaland business partners, at a national and international level, eventually also participating in business incubators.

COMPANY PROFILEViDiTrust works on ICT field with a solid experience in imageprocessing, data processing, IT solutions and printing andcopying. The main core business product is the ownanticounterfeiting technology called ViSeQR®. Patentedpending in Italy, Europe, USA and China, ViSeQR®

technology consists of a two-dimensional bar code (“QRcode”) framed by a printed image. The basic idea behindViSeQR® is that, while the information carried by the QRcode is easily reproducible e.g. using a photocopier, theframe printed around the QR code carries a sort offingerprint of the printer that has physically generated theimage, and such fingerprint can’t be reproduced. Uponsuch technology, ViDiTrust has built a system that consistson the ViSeQR® code printed on the product to beauthenticated, or on its label or package and a specificapp running on Android and iOS which is able to certifythe originality and the authenticity of the label/product.

This is possible thank to the existence of a unique fingerprintof each printer. The method used for the extraction of thefingerprint of the printer is based on extremely effectivepassive authentication techniques, based on imageprocessing, that are the core of the know how of ViDiTrust.Being these techniques “passive”, they arrive to uniquelyidentify the printer with no need for special paper or inks, and with no additional cost for the printing process. Therefore, ViSeQR® is at the same time a very effective andintrinsically very low cost authentication technology.Additionally, the system logs the information about where,in the globe, people check the authenticity of products, and of course whether the check has given “authentic” or“fake” answer. The producer of the authentic product canthen be provided with such information, a complementaryeffective traceability tool very useful for marketing purposes. Moreover, ViDiTrust has developed two other technologiesin addition to ViSeQR®. SecureDRM is a module that ensuresthe protection of data stored on the user device, making itappear inaccessible content in the case of unauthorizedcopying to other devices. It is available on Android, iOS,Java and .NET platforms. SecureImage increases the po-tential of the DRM by protecting images with a hidden

watermarking algorithm, which is able to claim thepaternity of the multimedia object in case of unauthorizeduses.

COMPANY’S STRENGHTS IN BRIEFThe company was founded as spin-off OV University ofSiena researcher. The business project was born from theresearch activities of the group of researchers VIPP, VisualInformation Processing and Protection (affiliated with thelaboratory of the Department of Telecommunications En-gineering of University of Siena), which has excellentreferences on projects both nationally and internationally, regardings information processing, and Information Hidingtechniques applied to digital images (or digitized). Sincethe constitution, ViDiTrust is activated mainly indevelopment of advanced and innovative projects as anti-counterfeiting technologies, and at least a saleble product.Such core technical competence is owned by Prof. MauroBarni (President of Scientific Committee), Giacomo Cancelli(CEO) and Luca Capobianco (CTO), and is complementedby the more business-oriented ones of Marco Cappellini(President, with background in Internet SW and companymanagement) and of Fabio Gennari (Business fellow, withbackground in management of the design of complex high-tech systems). Hence, the company has the creativity, theknow-how and the energy to design and develop newproducts and services suitable to satisfy a wide span ofpotential customers’ needs.

POTENTIAL TYPES OF BUSINESS PARTNERSMainly Viditrust is looking for:• Industrial partners that can exploit ViDiTrust technology

in specific vertical markets (documental, pharma, food, fashion, …)

• Venture Capital that can help the growth of the companywith funds for marketing and sales as well as withhuman resource skills in finance, marketing, businessdevelopment
