ICD-10 SPECIALTY CODING SUMMIT

7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.

Registration, continental breakfast

8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.

Making the Case: How to Motivate Clinicians to Get You the Documentation Details You NeedDocumentation is the key to ICD-10 code abstraction. Kickoff your ICD-10 Summit experience by going inside a clinician’s mindset to understand the burden they feel and the reasons for their resistance. Dr. Joe Nichols will show you how to best communicate to your clinicians the incentives and value most meaningful to them, in their language, that will urge them to produce high-quality, fully detailed documentation. After this revealing session, documentation resistance will no longer be a struggle at your practice!

8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Decoding Terminology TrapsNow that you are aligned with your clinicians on the importance of detailed documentation, turn your attention to the documentation problems guaranteed to trigger audits. Learn how to avoid documentation short comings and terminology risk points to ensure your practice stays away from additional development requests and audits. Hint: if you’re seeing terms like recurrent vs. chronic or use vs. abuse vs. dependence used interchangeably in your clinician’s documentation, this session is a MUST.

10:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.

Break

10:15 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.

ICD-10 Documentation Audit Game PlanPractices that were proactive and organized fared the best during the ICD-10 transition. Proactive planning and organization will reign again in the battle against documentation errors. The key now is to have a defined ICD-10 chart auditing plan. In this session, you’ll define and build the ICD-10 chart auditing plan that works best for your practice. Learn how to assess your risk, implement proven sampling techniques, spot inaccurate coding due to documentation deficits, routinely monitor improvement, and focus on individual re-training. You’ll walk away with an actionable game plan ready to implement at your practice when you return.

11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Documentation Gaps: You Hold the Power to SolveAddressing and preventing documentation gaps requires out-of-the-box thinking. For some, the key will be modifications to existing forms and templates. Others might find system prompts they deploy in their EHR will be the answer. Or perhaps rearranging your intake process to collect better data before the office visit begins will be the winning solution. Join Dr. Nichols as he narrows down the best strategies and approaches you can take to work smarter, not harder, to address documentation gaps.

12:15 p.m.

2017 ICD-10 Code and Guideline Changes RevealedBrace yourself, ICD-10 code changes are coming! The ICD Coordination and Maintenance Committee has proposed 1,943 new, 422 revised, and 305 deleted ICD-10-CM codes. Plus, there are 4,000 proposed ICD-10-PCS changes. During this can’t-miss hour, 2017 changes will be revealed and the most critical updates will be analyzed.

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Specificity Traps: Increased Specificity with Unspecified TermsYou’ve probably heard that ICD-10 is all about specificity – both in documentation and code choice. So when is using an “unspecified” code the right choice? Are 3-character codes less specified than 7-character codes? Does specificity require more than one code? Is “not elsewhere classified” unspecified? If specificity feels like a trap, you’re not alone. Luckily, Dr. Nichols has studied coding patterns and has loaded this session with code examples that illustrate the key concepts you need to understand to eliminate the gray area and confusion around your use of “unspecified” codes.

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Demystifying Use of 7th Characters in ICD-10-CMSeventh characters – coder’s friend or foe? For most coders, misuse of the 7th character is rampant and represents the #1 source of confusion around ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes. In this session, we’ll define initial encounter vs. subsequent encounter vs. sequela. We’ll dive into non-union vs. malunion vs. delayed healing. We’ll take the mystery out of the purpose behind the “x” and its proper use. And we’ll work through coding scenarios to ensure you can apply 7th characters the right way!

4:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.

Break

4:15 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Medical Necessity Policies: Where are your revenue risks in ICD-10? Just when you thought you were in the clear with ICD-10, critical policy gaps are rearing their ugly heads and presenting new revenue pitfalls. In this session, we’ll reveal the errors currently being identified within coverage policies – from screening colonoscopies to bone density tests and more – and we’ll show you what you can do in the meantime to protect your practice’s revenue.
