ICCE April 2014 One Day Conference "Building an Extraordinary Chamber Leadership Team"Dave Kilby, California Chamber of Commerce April 3, 2014 ­ Grimes Community Center Join your colleagues and we encourage you to bring your volunteer leadership to this oneday conference. Dave Kilby will present his workshop on Building an ExtraordinaryChamber Leadership Team from 10 am to 3 pm. ICCE will hold its Annual Meeting overthe lunch hour. Look for more information and registration available by the end of January on the ICCEweb site. Sponsorships are available. 

Important Announcement from the ICCE Boardof Directors  

We're writing to you today to announce that Sara Mentzer has accepted a new full­time position as the Community Program Manager for the Marion Blue Zones Project,effective January 6th. Therefore her last day as the ICCE Executive Director will bethis Friday, January 3rd. We are very grateful to Sara for her years of service anddedication to the chamber industry in Iowa. All of us will miss her greatly, and weknow many of you will as well. 

 However, because of our association management relationship with DowellManagement, the transition in leadership over the next few months should be avery smooth one. Executive Director­level leadership will be assumed in theinterim by Chad Kulas ­ an in­house account executive at Dowell Management.Chad has been a strong member of the backroom team for ICCE, and we are

confident in his abilities to lead ICCE during this transition period. Chad and Saraare already diligently working together on the transition, and the rest of thebackroom team at Dowell Management will continue to assist however they can. Dowell Management will focus their energy over the next month to place anindividual from Iowa as the new, permanent executive director of ICCE. Thisindividual will serve ICCE as an independent­contractor of Dowell Management,just as Sara did in the past. While Sara did an outstanding job, we whole­heartedly believe that a transition can provide an organization with newopportunities and energy, and we all are looking forward to watching ICCEcontinue to grow and innovate. Finally, Sara wanted us to pass along the following message to all of you: 

"Leaving my role with ICCE was not an easy decision. I believe in the work of local chambers ofcommerce and all that they do to make the local community and the state of Iowa a better placefor business and residents. The dedicated volunteer leadership along with the ICCE membershipis unmatched in their commitment to Iowa and their communities. It has been my privilege towork with so many talented people. I have enjoyed every minute of my decade with theorganization and thank you all for your assistance, for all you have taught me, your patience andyour friendships." 

When Opportunity KnocksTim Coffey, IOMClear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce I've been asked to write the lead article for this month's ICCEnewsletter, part of my responsibilities as a new ICCE Board member.When I thought about a suitable topic, I decided, as I often do, to stickwith the basics. So here goes, with the very basic question: How can Ibenefit from my ICCE membership? I remember my very first ICCE conference in the fall. I was brand newto the Chamber world and had a great interest in adding more value toChamber memberships through Chamber programming. At my firstconference, I absorbed as many program ideas that I could. The bigidea forum at the conference was the round table topics ­ programs,Board, membership, sponsorships & revenue ­ you name it. I cameback to my Chamber position in Washington, Iowa and implementedtwo new programs from that conference, demonstrating that we weremaking a sincere effort to add value to our Chamber memberships. I also got exposed to this nebulous concept called "the Institute." The chatter about it truly intriguedme. In my previous life, I was immersed in fundraising for not­for­profits. Fundraisers are notoriousfor insatiable continuous learning. I took that love of learning to commit myself to professionaldevelopment at this "Institute," finding out more about scholarship opportunities. I ended up getting anICCE scholarship that covered my first year Institute registration, a huge relief for our recoveringChamber budget. I found out that ICCE also offers scholarships to ICCE conferences, to ACCEconferences, and to MACE conferences. Speaking of MACE, I discovered that my ICCE dues also includes dues to MACE, the Mid AmericaChamber Executives, and if you liked the ICCE conference, you may really like the annual MACEconference. So I attended my first MACE conference, and walked away a convert that MACE is asuperb experience for professional growth. I ended up getting my IOM designation after attending the summer Institute at Madison and throwingin one extra session in Tucson, shortening my Institute experience to three years. Half of my

registration fees were paid for through ICCE and U.S.Chamber Institute scholarships, a major benefitof my ICCE membership. I also began attending regional ICCE meetings, that supplements the annual ICCE Conference and theSpring program, with ideas and happenings of what my neighboring Chambers are doing and maybehow we can collaborate with them on certain things. Now as a Board member for ICCE, I am experiencing another aspect of ICCE, and brushing off myassociation management leadership skills. What does ICCE offer you? All of the above, plus colleagues you can call and pick their brains aboutthings that are new to you. What it boils down to, like any volunteer organization, is you get out ofICCE what you put into ICCE. But, you need to suit up and show up, and you can do that at the nextICCE state or regional meeting, or at a MACE meeting. Being the best you can be in your profession should be on all of our radars. Let ICCE be your anchorfor professional development and career advancement. You'll be glad you did. After all, ICCE presentsyou with numerous opportunities to excel. So when opportunity knocks, open the door and takeadvantage of all that ICCE can offer you! 

Applications for Scholarships from ICCE As part of the ICCE mission we offer a number of scholarships to local and national conferences to ourmembers in good standing. The application process is once a year and awards will be presented inMarch. Look for the application in late January with details on which scholarships will be available. Inthe past ICCE has offered scholarships to attend US Chamber Institute, MACE, ICCE, ACCE and the USChamber's Government Affairs Conference.
