The Itawamba Community College Summer Band Camp has a long-standing tradition of excellence in both education and leadership in music. Since 1981, the camp has hosted over 16,000 students from all over the United States. It has become a staple in Northeast Mississippi and is regarded as one of the finest summer band camps in the Mid-South. Itawamba Community College is proud to continue offering this camp to those interested in furthering their music education, strengthening their leadership skills and creating lifelong friendships!

CAMP POLICY

• Statements concerning camp policy and parental permission which constitute a part of the agreement under which campers are enrolled at Itawamba Community College are listed below:

o I hereby grant ICC Band Camp permission to use any camp pictures in which

the likeness of the applicant appears in camp advertising or publicity media.

o In the event that I cannot be reached in an emergency, as determined by the camp staff and/or health staff, I hereby give permission to the physician selected by the camp to hospitalize, secure medical treatment for and to order injection, surgery or anesthesia for the camper named on this application. Christian Science parents may submit the authorized Christian Science form in lieu of this permission. Such forms are to be submitted and attached to this application.

• Students must have completed sixth grade to be eligible for camp.

• All campers are required to register for band, participating in one of the

six concert bands of balanced instrumentation.

o Participation in band, color guard, drum major and ensembles is based upon both ability and achievement. While all campers are encouraged to register for one or more of these groups, auditions may be necessary to select those campers most qualified to perform in any ensemble group. As described later, there are many ensembles available from which campers can choose, along with many various lecture courses as well.

• All campers are required to remain in camp through the closing concert.

o These concerts are on Friday, and campers may depart at the conclusion of the

concert.

• The use or possession of any form of narcotics, tobacco and/or alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited, along with any behavior unbecoming of young band students.

o Itawamba Community College reserves the right to dismiss campers for violation of this rule and deny any future band camp admittance. ICC also reserves the right to allow any student’s school band director to dismiss him or her from camp at his or her discretion for violation of this rule.

GENERAL INFORMATION

CAMP FEE Registration Fee: All applications must be accompanied by a nonrefundable $50 deposit, which is applied toward the total fee. The remainder of the fee is due on or before May 15, 2021. Payments may be made toward the total fee at any time prior to registration, but must be postmarked on or before May 15, 2021. The camp usually is full much sooner than the cut-off date. Total Fees: READ CAREFULLY!! • The total fee for a resident camper (which includes tuition, room, meals, T-

shirt and all activities) at the 2021 ICC Summer Band Camp is as follows:

o If the $50 deposit is postmarked on or before April 1, 2021, the remaining amount due is $185, for a total of $235.

o If the $50 deposit is postmarked on or after April 2, 2021, the remaining amount due is $200, for a total of $250.

• The total fee for a commuting camper (which includes tuition, lunch and

dinner each day, T-shirt and all activities) is $225, regardless of postmark date of registration fee.

*****Traditionally, a few camper spots are reserved for Drum Majors and Color Guard captains who are required to attend by their school band program.

*****Electronic payments cannot be accepted. Payments must be made with cash, check or money order.

Registration Procedure: Registration will be at the residence halls from 1-4 p.m., Sunday, June 20, 2021. Campers will receive their name tag, meal ticket, camp manual and T-shirt. Camp Meetings: All camp meetings are required, the first being at 6:30 p.m., Sunday evening in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center, where all camp meetings will be held. Dormitories: Campers are housed in modern air-conditioned resident halls. Upon dorm check-in, there will be a $10 key deposit, which will be returned to you when you turn in your key. Have correct change at the time of check-in. If you lose your key, there will be a $25 replacement fee (the locks must be changed). Music and Equipment: All band music is provided by the camp. Campers provide their own musical instruments, accessories, guard and drum major equipment. Pianos are available for piano class, but guitars are not provided for guitar class. The camp is not responsible for damage or loss of personal property. Auditions: Placement in bands and for chairs is by audition. Instrumental auditions are Sunday, June 20, 2021, starting at 2 p.m. Each camper will be required to audition. (Unfortunately, the camp cannot accept Color Guard only {non-instrumental} campers) Campers will be asked to play a few scales and sight-read. Piano, bass, guitar, vocal and drum set auditions for Jazz Band participants will be held after the regular audition. Results will be announced at the camp meeting Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Jazz band results will be posted Monday morning at the camp office. Activities: An activity has been planned for each night of camp from 8-10 p.m. All campers are required to participate in these activities. Activities are Field Night, Talent and Guest Concert, Dance and Ensemble Concerts. Thursday night is also a camper performance night. Following the dinner break, the woodwind, brass, concert percussion and jazz bands will perform in the auditorium. Starting at 10:30 a.m. Friday, the following groups will perform for field exhibition in the Davis Event Center: Color Guard, Dance, Marching Percussion, Indoor Performance and Drum Major classes.

PROCEDURE FOR REGISTERING FOR DAILY CLASSES

1. Select the classes you would like to take from the periods offered. (Consult Course Descriptions on the preceding pages for an explanation of the courses and check times/periods carefully.)

2. Campers not registering for a first period class WILL BE placed in IMPACT, which begins at 7:45 each morning. This is to ensure all campers are present and accounted for and are also safe.

3. Enter the class name, hours credit and code on the registrar’s form in the correct period.

4. Two hour courses such as Color Guard Routine (second and third period)

and Jazz Band (fourth and fifth period) cover two periods. Do not select another class during the second hour.

5. All Color Guard campers are required to take either first period Color Guard Technique – Beginning or first period Across The Floor when taking Color Guard Routine class second and third period.

6. All percussionists are required to take Marching Percussion second and third periods. It is highly recommended that all percussionists enroll in fifth period Percussion Fundamentals, unless enrolled in Jazz Band.

7. The Drum Major program is three periods (first, second and third). Beginning Drum Major is fifth period only for those who want to learn drum major skills for future auditions.

8. Your band director must approve the classes you intend to take, and you cannot change them unless your band director approves the change.

9. Codes: A = course recommended for all campers H = course recommended for high school campers only 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 = the period the class is offered

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS GENERAL COURSES FOR ALL CAMPERS: (*) – NEW CLASS!

• Band: Six full concert bands with twelve 12 expert directors with fun and exciting music. Required for all campers.

• Conducting Class I: Designed for campers with no conducting

experience, this course teaches the basic skills of conducting. • Conducting Class II: Designed for campers with some knowledge of

conducting, this course teaches the basic skills needed to conduct any size ensemble.

• Daily Practice Routine: Designed for all campers, this course teaches

tips for developing good practice habits. • Dance Class: Designed for campers with some dance experience, this

course teaches basic-to-intermediate dance choreography.

• Dance Class – Beginning: Designed for campers with little or no dance experience, this course teaches basic dance choreography.

• Ear Training: Designed for all campers, this course develops better

intonation and awareness of playing in tune based on using Solfege (do, re mi, etc.).

• Ensembles: Designed for all campers. Perform in one of the many

smaller ensembles based on a given instrument or instrument group: percussion, flute, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba/euphonium.

• Foundations of Movement: Designed for all instrumentalists and

percussionists, this course explores basic techniques of movement utilized in marching band and indoor units with an emphasis on body awareness. Wear clothes that allow ease of movement. This course is offered first period only.

• Fundamentals of Rhythm: Designed for all campers, this course offers a fundamental approach to counting rhythm to help with reading music.

• Guitar – Beginning: Designed for campers with no experience playing guitar, this course teaches basic chords and guitar technique. Class is limited to 15 students per period.

• Guitar: Designed for campers with some experience playing guitar, this

course teaches advanced guitar technique. The camper must have a six string acoustic guitar for this class. Class is limited to 15 students per period.

• IMPACT: Designed for all campers, this course offers a positive beginning

to camp each day. Topics discussed are: I(nitiative), M(otivation), P(ersistence), A(ttitude), C(haracter) and T(eamwork). This course is offered first period only.

• Improvisation: Designed for all campers, this course offers an

introduction to basic chords, scales, solo playing and how to use them in jazz improvisation.

• Indoor Winds (brass/woodwind): Designed for campers with at

least a year of marching experience, this class develops musical and visual rehearsal techniques of an indoor marching/performing ensemble. Available for brass and woodwind players only. Marching instruments required. This course covers two periods a day. (second and third)

• Introduction to Finale: Designed for all campers, this course gives

students a first look into Finale Notation Software and offers strategies on how to begin using the program and avoid pitfalls.

• Introduction to Pyware: Designed for all campers, this class gives

students a first look into Pyware Drill-Writing Software and strategies on how to begin using the program and avoid pitfalls.

• Jazz Band: Designed for all campers. Play jazz in a band that swings! Jazz

Band instrumentation is Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones; Trumpets; Trombones; Piano; Guitar; Bass Guitar and Drum Set. This course covers two periods a day. (fourth and fifth)

• Leadership: Recommended for high school campers, this course develops leadership skills and qualities through certain team building exercises and activities. Learn how to lead and what it takes to be an effective leader.

• Marching Band – Beginning: Designed for campers with no marching

experience, this course teaches the basic skills needed to build a foundation for those about to enter high school marching band.

• Marching Band: Designed for campers with some marching experience,

this course emphasizes both the basic skills needed to build a strong marching band fundamentals foundation and the skills needed to help build leaders on the marching field.

• Music Theory I: Designed for all campers, this course is an introduction

to the basic elements of music, scales, harmony and notation.

• Music Theory II: Designed for high school campers, this course is an in-depth study of the basic elements of music, scales, harmony, melody and form.

• Piano – Beginning: Designed for campers with no experience playing

piano, this course teaches the keyboard and proper piano hand position. Class is limited to 12 students per period.

• Piano: Designed for campers with some experience playing piano, this

course teaches advanced piano keyboard skills. Class is limited to 12 students per period.

• * Scales – Clarinets: Designed for all campers who play clarinet, bass

clarinet or contrabass clarinet, this course will increase both knowledge of major scales and multiple ranges/optional fingerings. This course is offered first period only.

• * Scales – Double Reeds: Designed for all campers who play oboe or

bassoon, this course will increase both knowledge of major scales and multiple ranges/optional fingerings. This course is offered first period only.

• * Scales – Flutes: Designed for all campers who play flute, this course will increase both knowledge of major scales and multiple ranges/optional fingerings. This course is offered first period only.

• * Scales – Saxophones: Designed for all campers who play alto

saxophone, tenor saxophone or baritone saxophone, this course will increase both knowledge of major scales and multiple ranges/optional fingerings. This course is offered first period only.

• * Scales – Trumpets: Designed for all campers who play trumpet, this

course will increase both knowledge of major scales and multiple ranges/optional fingerings. This course is offered first period only.

• * Scales – French Horns: Designed for all campers who play French

horn, this course will increase both knowledge of major scales and multiple ranges/optional fingerings. This course is offered first period only.

• * Scales – Trombones: Designed for all campers who play trombone,

this course will increase both knowledge of major scales and multiple ranges/optional fingerings. This course is offered first period only.

• * Scales – Baritones/Tubas: Designed for all campers who play

baritone or tuba, this course will increase both knowledge of major scales and multiple ranges/optional fingerings. This course is offered first period only.

• Steel Drum Band: Designed for all campers, this course teaches students

to play steel pans and the various percussion instruments that make up the “engine room.” Students will learn to play these instruments as well as perform for the other campers. Class is limited to 15 students per period.

COURSES DESIGNED FOR DRUM MAJOR TRAINING

• Drum Major – Beginning: Designed for campers with no drum major experience, this course teaches the basic skills needed to build a foundation for those wishing to be future drum majors. This course is offered fifth period only.

• Drum Major: Designed for campers who will be Drum Majors at their school next year, this course offers intensive training to sharpen conducting, vocal and leadership skills. This course covers three periods a day. (first, second and third)

• Drum Major Mace – Beginning: Designed for campers with no drum

major mace experience, this course teaches the basic fundamentals of spinning mace. Students must bring their own mace to camp. This course is offered fourth period only.

• Drum Major Mace: Designed for campers with some drum major mace

experience, this course teaches intermediate skills for spinning mace. Students must bring their own mace to camp. This course is offered fifth period only.

COURSES DESIGNED FOR COLOR GUARD TRAINING

• Across The Floor: Designed for color guard campers with some experience with marching color guard, the course teaches dance sequences and terminology used in color guard and winter guard. This course is offered first period only.

• Color Guard Captain: Designed for campers who will be Color Guard

Captains at their school next year, this course offers intensive training to sharpen skills necessary to be effective leaders for their units. This course is offered fourth period only.

• Color Guard Technique – Beginning: If you are interested in

auditioning for your school’s color guard, but have no experience spinning, this is the class for you. This course caters to beginners only and will cover guard fundamentals on flag. Students must bring their own equipment to camp. This course is offered first period only.

• Color Guard Routine: Highly recommended for color guard campers

from beginning to advanced, students will learn a routine to perform at the end of camp. In order to fully benefit each student, a screening will be on the first day of camp in order to place everyone in the appropriate level class. This course covers two periods a day. (second and third)

• Weapons – Beginning: Designed for campers with no weapon experience, this course teaches the basic fundamentals of spinning weapons. Rifles and sabers will be used, and the students must bring their own equipment to camp. This course is offered fourth period only.

• Weapons: Designed for campers with some experience spinning saber or

rifle, this course teaches skills to help develop your technique. This is not for beginners, and campers must bring their own equipment to camp. This course is offered fifth period only.

COURSES DESIGNED FOR PERCUSSION TRAINING

• Drum Set: Designed for all campers, this course introduces multiple techniques and musical styles appropriate to the trap set. This course will be divided in different levels according to campers’ experience level on drum set. It is not required, but it is encouraged to bring a small drum set if enrolling in this class.

• Marching Percussion: Required for all percussionists, campers

are placed into level-appropriate marching percussion sections where they learn warm-ups, playing techniques and a drum feature for performance on the final day of camp. Campers should bring marching equipment from their school, if available. This course covers two periods a day (second and third).

• Percussion: Recommended for all percussionists, this course is an

introduction to the various percussion instruments. Mallet keyboards, drum set, timpani, snare drum and Latin percussion instruments are covered in hands-on lecture and demonstration. This course is offered fourth period only.

• Percussion Fundamentals: Highly recommended for campers

enrolled in marching percussion class, students will develop basic drumming skills by learning rudiments, techniques and exercises. This course is offered fifth period only.

SUPPORT SERVICES Snack Stations – Snack stations set up in the residence halls after camp meetings for campers to purchase snacks and drinks throughout the week. Bookstore – The bookstore is open every day for campers to purchase personal items, souvenirs, gifts and clothing. Bookstore hours are from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Food Services – Delicious and nutritious meals are provided by Sodexo Food Services and will be served in the ICC Dining Hall. Upon registration, campers are issued name tags, which are used as meal tickets. For questions you might have regarding food services, contact Sodexo directly at 662.862.8210. Laundry – All dorms are equipped with washers and dryers if a camper has to do laundry during the week. Counselors and Staff – Band camp counselors include college students under the direction of the camp director. The staff is led by experienced professionals who carefully supervise all aspects of a camper’s experience. Health Care – Northeast Mississippi Medical Center has a clinic in Fulton. Campers must have their own medical insurance coverage. There will also be a nurse on duty 24 hours a day. Recreation – The ICC Fulton Campus has a recreation area with basketball courts and tennis courts for campers’ enjoyment. Mail – The campers receive their mail at the camp meeting. Mail should be addressed to:

That number is 662.862.8000. Security – Officers are on duty 24 hours a day to help the campers and provide security for them. In the event of an emergency, call 662.862.8318 or 662.862.8300 for campus emergency services.

Itawamba Community College continues to monitor the evolving challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our priority is to ensure the health and well-being of our community all while

preparing contingencies to ensure the continued functioning of our operations. We are continuing to do our part to flatten the infection curve. In an effort for ICC to do its part, the

administration continues to approve operational changes that align and adhere with CDC and other local, state and national health authority mandates.

A TYPICAL DAY AT CAMP… A typical day at camp starts with the camper waking up and going to breakfast about 6:30 or 7 a.m. All campers attend first period class at 7:30 a.m. IMPACT will be scheduled for those who do not schedule a first period class. It will begin at 7:45 each morning. All campers have an hour-and-a-half of band starting at 8:30 a.m. The camper may have a second period class at 10 a.m. and/or a third period class at 11 a.m. and then lunch. At 1:30 p.m., it’s back to band rehearsal for an hour-and-a-half. At 3 p.m., the camper may have a fourth period class, and at 4 p.m., the fifth period classes meet. Then it’s dinner break until 6 p.m. and another hour of band rehearsal. All campers meet in the auditorium at 7:15 p.m. for the camp meeting where mail is distributed and announcements are made. From 8-10 p.m., activities are planned for camper entertainment. Curfew is at 10:30 p.m., and campers go to sleep so they can get up early the next day and do it all again. Visitation – Parents, relatives and friends are invited to attend the Friday Field Exhibition and Final Concerts. Visitors should report to the Camp office upon arrival on campus to receive a name tag. The staff will locate the camper(s) to be visited. Campers will not be allowed to leave class for a visit unless it is an emergency.

Registration Form/Class Schedule Each camper will be required to carry no fewer than seven hours and no more than nine hours per camp day. Schedules will be arranged as nearly as possible according to preference. Note: Each camper must bring his/her own instrument. All are required to participate in band. All color guard students must bring their own equipment. All drum majors and color guard students are required to sign up for all drum major and color guard classes. Consult the application booklet and your band director when completing the class schedule. 1. Select the courses you want to take from the Course Description pages. 2. Look at the Class Offerings pages to determine which period the course is offered. 3. Fill in the schedule below with the classes you would like to take. 4. Make sure that the class is offered that period. Include the hours’ credit and code along with the class name. 5. Junior High campers are not allowed to take High School courses.

Accident Insurance:

Campers are insured while on the Itawamba Community College campus. This is a supplement policy and covers accidents only. If a camper is covered under an existing health policy, the existing policy must be claimed upon first. Inform personnel of any special medical conditions or drug allergies. The camp insurance does not include to and from campus.
