    MISSION

IBS, through teaching, research and outreach, contributes to the development of management knowledge and practice, and prepares and develops managers and leaders to make a positive impact on organisations and society, in a globalised world.

  • WELCOME TO THE ISCTE BUSINESS SCHOOLIBS is a pioneer School in the teaching of management and business sciences, and the first where this was an autonomous area as opposed to a subject taught within the field of economics. The links to the corporate world are a distinctive feature of our School. Since the outset, IBS has relied on the support

of invited faculty from the business world whose collaboration has provided valuable input for our curricula. It is therefore not surprising that, regardless of the economic environment, successive generations of students have enjoyed employability rates close to 100%. Even more importantly, companies recognize the high quality of the training given to IBS students and this confidence is boosted by the volume and excellence of the research produced by our faculty members and researchers. Internationalization is the second distinguishing feature of our School. Not

only does IBS teach courses in partnerships with universities from Asia, Africa and South America but, within the Portuguese university framework, IBS has also pioneered the setting-up of a support office for Erasmus students. This model, which works in conjunction with universities around the world, has attracted so many foreign students that we have been unable to attain full reciprocity despite the growing number of IBS students who benefit from a training experience abroad. The ability to work in an international setting is clearly demonstrated by the number of Alumni working abroad, many of whom hold leadership positions in multinational companies. Innovation and entrepreneurship are the third distinctive feature of our School. Pedagogical innovation led to the updating of syllabuses as well as the introduction of new teaching methods; these include the development of case studies and software support for management and distance learning instruments. It is not by chance that many reference texts in the various management fields have been written by IBS faculty.Lastly, special mention must be made of the close relationship that IBS faculty and staff develop with our students and the concern for their well-being as this is a decisive factor for the high academic performance of our students. The intellectual rigour in the classroom, the promotion of team work and the exposure to real case studies allow IBS to create value for our students, and guarantee they make positive contribution to the development of the national and global community.

  • IBS Career Services aim to support the career development (professional and academic) by strengthening the proximity between students and the biggest international companies and also through a complete soft skills training programme that guarantees success in the most challenging recruitment processes.

    HOW WE HELP IBS STUDENTS

On CampusCareer Forum – Annual job fair featuring information booths run by more than 30 employers who conduct presentations and training workshops for studentsCompany presentation – Throughout the academic year, companies interested in recruiting give presentations to IBS students to introduce themselves and explain their selection procedures.Softskills workshops – Managed by experienced technicians or by invited companies, IBS students have the opportunity to improve their personal competencies.Career Week – With this event ISCTE Business School students have the opportunity to interact directly with the entrepreneurial reality through two main events:› My Daily Work – a programme in which former students with different kinds of jobs at different companies visit classes to explain, discuss and share ideas on the day-to-day tasks they perform in their jobs;› Side By Side – an initiative in which students have the chance to visit some of the biggest companies recruiting at IBS.Preparation for management competitions – The management competitions are an opportunity to apply the technical competencies in simulations of the real business world.

In the opinion of PwC the IBS Career Services team

has been instrumental in operationalizing our strategy of attracting and retaining talent. The well-established relationship of trust, as well as their dedication, involvement and total availability to cooperate in our many recruitment and selection initiatives has enabled us to attract IBS students to our different company areas. Apart from that, it is obvious the good preparation of the students who contribute to the activities organised by the IBS Career Services; this undoubtedly improves their efficiency in the assessment processes where they participate.”

Mónica Ramos, PwC Human Capital Manager

The IBS Career Services plays a key role in the preparation and

monitoring of the recruitment processes in which the students are involved. IBS BUSINESSAGENDAThe primary aim of IBS Masters Programmes is to prepare qualified professionals who are able to provide the skills and expertise that are valued in the real business world. To achieve this aim, the companies themselves must be a constant presence in the classroom, in a variety of ways, helping particularly in the preparation of work plans and the design of final projects. In our Business Masters Programmes you will get to hear first-hand experiences of business professionals, told in the first person, who will bring you even closer to the corporate world reality.

Thus, each Business School module features the valuable participation of renowned experts in the area being studied, giving you increasingly relevant contact with the real job world and the less known aspects of the profession you chose.

  • MID-WEEK Programme

In the Mid-Week Programme, students get a chance to further their international experience through a mid-week residential stay in a different country. In the past three years, students have been to Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, in Spain and to Pforzheim and Heidelberg in Germany. At the same time, students from our partner universities came to Lisbon for their residential week and got the chance to meet our Masters’ students. These experiences provide academic and networking opportunities for all the participants involved.

This was my first experience living abroad. I learned how to live by

myself and I had to deal with a completely different culture and language in a city where most people do not speak English. Personally, I feel that learning

the language of a foreign country was the most important experience while studying abroad. It helps you to understand the culture and not to feel excluded.(…) If you are a foreigner, you might have to get used to being treated differently in a good way. Sometimes it means someone will want to talk to you, take a picture of you or offer you free drinks. After a few months, this city will feel like home. It has the perfect balance between the western world and the Chinese culture.

School opened my doors to attractive employment opportunities. The intercultural environment and interactive approach of the program were among the premises which allowed me to easily adapt with the everyday life of multinational firms. For instance, the emphasis on delivering a large amount of group works helped me to successfully face the dynamics involved in the professional life. Likewise, a number of innovative business-oriented case-studies and trainings contributed to improve my practical understandings of strategic and effective international human resources management.I appreciated professors and students' mutual involvement in day-to-day academic activities, as it gave the opportunity for professors to focus on individual development and nourish personal relationships thus creating an ideal learning environment.IBS’s Master Program in Human Resources Management provided me with the grounds to undertake a valuable academic and professional career.

As a student of the Master in Economics I have found on ISCTE-

IUL an extraordinary curricular structure and a stimulating environment to learn. With a small class, full of international students, and a teaching staff most motivated to encourage us to learn, I was able to choose several advanced courses from the Ph.D in Economics and in Finance, which definitely helped me choosing my master thesis' topic. Still, most important of all, I strongly believe that the economic seminars that exist along the thesis' year are extremely helpful in the process of guiding the master student. Plus, the Master in Economics is much more than "just math". More than that, the goal of the course relies on learning advanced topics in Economics through the development of advanced techniques in the core fields of macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics.

Having the goal to get into a program with a bold practical side, in which I could

develop a wide range of soft skills, and where I could have a closer look over the business world, Msc. in Marketing sounded to me the best of both worlds. With a strong conceptual foundation, this program has allowed me to have a strategic thinking on the market flow due to a wide complementary courses offer. A marketer must be aware of how to rule a business and not only focus on the creativity- creativity and sustainability must walk hand in hand, and having many group works, working on real case studies about real companies allowed me to get closer to the business life. I was constantly challenged to come out with outstanding proposals to so many different fields and, in the end of the day, everything was worth it when I realized I’ve created a bunch of 360 degrees ideas, and made them work out. While being part of this program I have taken the best out of IBS. I’ve got enrolled in several extracurricular activities, organizations and, even, challenges in which I sharpen my soft and hard skills, met wonderful people and got closer to the professional life.If you are willing to get into a journey to take the best out of you- Msc. in Marketing should be in your top priorities.

I do not have a “typical” day at work. Since I work with events my schedule changes

and it depends on what is happening at our venue. Some weeks I do have regular office hours from Monday to Friday, but I do work as well at nights or on weekends if needed. I am the on-site point of contact for my clients and therefore I need to be present at my events. If we have special events I might leave my desk and help out wherever needed. For example some weeks ago Michel Telo was performing at our venue, and since I speak Portuguese I became the VIP host for him and his team. I made sure that Michel Telo could enjoy his meal at our Cafe and I even helped him shopping at our Rock Shop. Some weeks ago we also had to host a last minute VIP lunch with the stars from All-Star Celebrity Apprentice who were filming inside Universal Studios. Part of this group was Lil Jon, Omarosa, Dennis Rodman, La Toya Jackson, Brande Roderick and others. We hosted the group in our John Lennon VIP room for lunch and it was an interesting experience. My job is very diversified and is never getting boring.
