IBM Software Group | DB2 Information Management Software
Big Chunks
How big is 128PB?• VERY BIG!
• If we used 180GB drives, it would take approximately 716,800 drives.
• If we stacked them all on top of each other, we would have a tower about 11 miles tall.
• If we stacked them 10 high, we would need over 3 acres of floor space.
• At current prices, it would cost about $3B to buy the disks … before mirroring or RAID is added in
• At a load rate of 100MB/sec, it would take nearly 40 years of constant, uninterrupted streaming.
IBM Software Group | DB2 Information Management Software

IDS for Linux on zSeries
IBM Informix 9.40 is the first IBM database engine to fully exploit the large memory, 64-bit capabilities of the Linux kernel on the zSeries, and provides an excellent upgrade path for our Linux customers needing a high-performance, Internet-scalable data management system
Fully implemented 64-bit architectures, such as zSeries result in improved performance, ease of use, and the ability to handle larger problems more easily.
Target Market is existing IDS customers, especially those already on Linux or non supported SW platforms
Main value propositions are Benefits of upgrading from IDS 7 to 9.4

Why is IDS still better than the competition!
IDS runs applications with less hardware than the competition!
“For every dollar spent on off-the-shelf software made by Oracle in the 1990s, a customer could pay as much as 10 times more in installation and customization costs, former Oracle President Ray Lane said.” from an article on news.com (July 2001)
No expensive ‘add-ons’. Everything you need to run IDS is included in one server price.
• Partitioning, Spatial, Replication, Availability, Developer’s Kit, Web Administration, and more
Rapidly deploy new applications in the development environment of choice, whether 4GL, ESQL/C, or Java!
Operate IDS databases with fewer DBAs than the competition (2-1, or 3-1 ratio are not uncommon among users of both IDS)
IBM Software Group | DB2 Information Management Software
Why IBM over Oracle or Microsoft?
IBM became the leading database vendor in new license revenue in 2001 & 2002 with a total of 34.6 percent market share, overtaking Oracle.
IBM also continued its momentum in the Unix & Windows markets, experiencing double digit growth in 2001.
Microsoft has limited capabilities in heterogeneous database and platform environments; limits your computing platform choice
Microsoft supports only Windows
IDS & IBM support wide array of OS and HW platforms including Windows 2000 and XP, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Linux, AIX and zSeries
many tools for heterogeneous data access from multiple data sources Support for Open Standards - Microsoft tries to drive internal standards as
industry standards; IBM supports open standards Service & Support – while Microsoft provides support through 3rd parties and
alliances, IBM provides award winning support through an extensive, well trained organization
Oracle – expensive

Migration Considerations
New Reserved Words have been added (COLLATION, CROSS, FULL, INSTEAD, RESTART, RIGHT)
Migrating from prior versions of Informix Dynamic Server
IDS 7.24, 7.31, 9.14, 9.21, and 9.3 upgrade directly to IDS 9.4
IDS 7.22, and 7.30 require an interim upgrade to IDS 7.31
All other migrations will require dbexport/import
Migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit uses same process
Migrating to a different Operating System requires Export/Import
