At SVT in Sweden we have deployed one of the most innovative production and archiving solutions in Europe

§ The Swedish broadcaster chose IBM to design and build Europe’s most advanced digital TV production environment based on file sharing and storage for the distribution of video content. § 20 newsrooms are integrated into a network built on a TCP/IP Ethernet

backbone, supported by a Media Asset Management system developed by IBM and Ardendo, This allows journalists to retrieve and edit content exploiting server technology. The solution captures the incoming video and provides internal distribution and storage of the media assets. § This solution was the platform for the launch of SVT’s 24 hour news channel,

but was so popular among journalists and editors that it is being rolled out across the News Department and other content genres. § IBM and Ardendo have recently signed a significant new contract with SVT for

Meta 2 as the broadcaster commits to the next phase in its digital roll out.

At TRT in Turkey we won a standalone digital archive contract in competition against seven vendors

§ The Turkish broadcaster chose IBM to build a state of the art digital archive based on an open standards IT approach to support 10,000 hours of video assets § TRT needed to introduce improved business efficiencies in the search and

retrieval of video material from its archive to make it more competitive § The solution provides for automated ingest and scheduling, transcoding,

browsing and is supported by a Media Asset Management system from Ardendo § Core IBM technologies include General Parallel File System (GPFS), TSM,

DB2, Websphere. Storage is provided on FastT and LTO 2. IBM p- and x-series servers and Intellistations are included in the configuration.

MTV Networks Europe have selected IBM to build a new generation digital super production and archive system

§ A total storage solution to support the production process will enable MTV to link edit stations together accessing thousands of hours of video content § Multiple users of Pinnacle’s Liquid Editors will have simultaneous access to

multiple video streams across a Storage Area Network configured on a Linux cluster and exploiting GPFS file sharing technology § Substituting traditional linear tape editing processes with an integrated IT

environment will allow MTV to generate a 30 per cent increase in productivity “This project is all about putting in place our digital approach for the future. The

solution will let us get more work done in shorter periods as a result of more collaborative work and give us flexibility and scalability in our growth as our needs increase” – MTV VP Broadcast Technology

At CNN we deployed the world’s largest digital broadcast archive

§ IBM has developed the world’s largest digital broadcast archive for CNN exploiting IBM technologies to digitalise CNN’s most valuable video assets. § CNN staff worldwide now have instant access to CNN content and the

company is generating new revenue streams by transferring its digital content onto new distribution channels § IBM developed the software solution and worked closely with Sony in

implementing a robust scaleable solution with capacity of 10TB online storage and 2 PetaBytes of tape storage

“This digital solution has enabled CNN to plan and implement a shift from an analogue broadcast production system to a digital system where content will be accessible to all our broadcast and interactive services." Gordon Castle, CNN Senior Vice President of Digital Strategic Systems, R&D § Ardendo is to provide CNN with an automated multi channel ingest solution

The South Korean broadcaster SBS has placed an order with IBM for a digital storage solution

§ SBS needed a digital solution for more efficient means of managing and distributing its archive assets § The broadcaster’s content will now be stored in a central digital archive

providing users with easy access to historic materials for viewing, re-use and re-sale and will deliver significant costing savings § The solution is based on IBM’s Digital Media Centre storage comprising

General Parallel File System (GPFS), Fastt 700, LTO tape storage, p series and x series servers, IBM Websphere and Tivoli Storage Management § SBS says their digital investment will provide them with international

competitiveness and generate new sources of revenue growth
