the increasing demand created by new applications. Furthermore, the data

center needed to be relocated to make way for the expansion of several other

buildings on the medical campus. A critical part of the solution would involve

designing and constructing a new data center and bringing it online in the tight

timeframe of less than 12 months.

Solution:The hospital turned to IBM Global Technology Services to help it design and

build a world-class data center. The IBM team first helped the client establish a

statement of requirements; with the parameters in place, IBM designed and con-

structed the new 6,000-square-foot data center. The data center incorporates dual power sources all the way back to the main

power plant; the electrical system is then backed up by a redundant generator plant. The cooling system is also redundant,

featuring a chilled water solution and redundant air-conditioning units. The project involved the relocation of approximately 500

servers as well as numerous computers and storage devices to the new facility.

uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and critical security features, and it needed

to engage a reliable, experienced provider to implement a new facility. Its most

important requirement was to implement the data center without a single inter-

ruption to its business operations.

Solution:Basing its decision on IBM’s excellent track record for designing state-of-the art data center solutions, the company

engaged IBM Global Technology Services to perform an initial risk assessment. After determining that a simple enhancement

of the old data center would result in a high likelihood of unplanned outages, the IBM team opted to design and implement

a new data center within one of the company’s existing buildings.

IBM created a data center design and project plan, ordered hardware from the client’s preferred suppliers and completed the

implementation. The new data center included multiple features designed to increase availability and enhance security, such

as raised flooring; a rack-mounted UPS from APC InfraStruXure; an early-warning smoke-detection unit from Siemens; fire and

burglar alarms; a Novec 1230 fire-suppression system; and new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning components.

more modern backup data center.

invest in up-to-date IT equipment so it could make its services more accessible

to residents. The council lacked adequate facilities for housing and supporting

rienced IT provider to create a data center that would provide a resilient, scalable

environment to support its technology initiative.

Solution:IBM Global Technology Services surveyed various facilities used by the council and performed a feasibility study, creating

IBM team created a comprehensive design plan that included a computer room, a printing room, an operational bridge and

Client requirements:This racing team needed to streamline its design-simulation processes, shorten

time to market and reduce the cost of design testing via more efficient, accurate

and cost-effective design processes. The company also sought additional com-

puting power so that it could accommodate rapid design changes and perform

more complex simulations more quickly before moving to the physical simulation

part of the car-design process.

Solution:Together, IBM and IBM Premier Business Partner OCF designed and implemented a new data center, including a US$3.5

million high-performance computing (HPC) cluster environment and an IBM System Storage™ solution. The HPC comprises

a mix of IBM eServer™ 326m machines, IBM System x™ 3455 machines, IBM System x 3655 machines, IBM System x3755

machines and IBM IntelliStation® workstations.

IBM Global Technology Services delivered a specially designed new data center to house the HPC infrastructure, including

uninterruptible power supply (UPS), air-conditioning (AC) and generator features. During a four-month, fixed-price engage-

ment, IBM also created the design and oversaw project management of the subcontractor construction element.

compliance with Banca d’Italia directives—or Basel II directives—regarding

information security or business availability and continuity. To remedy the situ-

ation, the company opted to build a new data center that would increase the

security and availability of its systems.

Solution:Having had a positive experience from working with IBM in the past, the IT services provider knew that IBM was competent

and efficient, and it determined that IBM’s proposal appeared fair and reasonably priced compared with the competitors’

offers. The company engaged IBM Global Technology Services to establish space and power requirements and provide

site selection, project planning and implementation services for its new data center. The client selected a former bank vault

as the location, which posed several challenges—not the least of which were the 20-inch-thick walls.

Client requirements:Fast, steady growth had forced this packaging manufacturer to quickly deploy

multiple data centers. Yet each facility had its own security system, and the com-

pany wasn’t sure which facilities were adequately protected against fire, flooding,

power surges and theft. The company needed to consolidate its infrastructures at

a single site to enhance and standardize its enterprisewide security and protec-

tion against physical dangers.

Solution:The client’s preferred supplier, IBM Business Partner Lampertz, didn’t possess the in-house skills necessary to achieve its

client’s goal. Impressed with IBM’s expertise in IT architecture, it engaged IBM Global Technology Services to plan and

design the new data center. IBM provided project management services and a team of site and facilities services special-

ists to help throughout the engagement. The team assessed the viability of the client’s desired site and provided a list of its

potential weaknesses and changes required to optimize the location.

IBM then provided input for Lampertz and local fire-prevention and security services to use to work with the client to build

a 100-square-foot IT security room on the ground floor of the client’s headquarters. The room includes an auxiliary power

distribution system (APDS), an air-conditioning system, a fire-detection system, a burglar alarm and a monitoring system.

Client requirements:This power-tool distributor housed its server environment in a data center that

lacked redundancy, adequate security and climate control. Faced with the con-

stant threat of downtime, loss of business-critical data and unauthorized access

to its core systems, the company wanted to implement a state-of-the-art IT infra-

structure and a new data center.

Solution:IBM Global Technology Services provided project management services for the solution, overseeing the entire project and

IBM managed the construction of the new data center, which includes early fire-detection systems, uninterruptible power

supply (UPS) and low-voltage switching stations, independent emergency power solutions, and secure access control

systems. The IT infrastructure includes a client/server environment for financial applications, enterprise resource planning

(ERP) systems, a storage air-conditioning control system, a help-desk application and Microsoft® Office software.

new, modernized data center—choosing IBM because its solution was the most effective and least risky, and especially

because of IBM’s experience. IBM designed a modular data center that would use preengineered components for quick

Client requirements:This university was running an IT environment that had become increasingly

inadequate to meet the needs of students and faculty members. The organiza-

tion lacked a true enterprise-class data center, and its existing computer sites

were reaching their limits in terms of space, power and cooling capacity. It

needed to upgrade to an enterprise-class data center, and it needed the right

provider to implement the solution.

Solution:After consulting with several vendors, the university decided to work with IBM to centralize, consolidate and standardize its

servers. IBM’s proposed solution included an IBM Scalable Modular Data Center with advanced InfraStruXure architecture

from IBM Business Partner APC; APC’s architecture was then standardized on IBM BladeCenter® servers as the platform

for virtualized Microsoft® Windows® and Linux® servers.

The IBM solution entailed virtualization of 75 servers onto just 40 servers, resulting in significant cost and energy savings.

It also included targeted and efficient power and cooling components that pump cool air only when and where it is needed.

The combined savings from these two factors are likely to significantly reduce long-term capital and operational expenditures.

formance and capacity of its IT environment. The university wanted to purchase

new high-performance computing (HPC) hardware but soon realized that its

ture. The university needed a new facility to house the HPC processors, with

capacity for growth.

Solution:IBM Global Technology Services designed and deployed a new data center that leverages IBM clustering and HPC technol-

supply (UPS), air-conditioning (AC) and a generator were implemented to remove any single points of failure and to maintain

HPC infrastructure built on the latest IBM System x™ technology. The clustering configuration included:

An additional 96 System x3455 servers grouped with four System x3755 servers with integrated Clearspeed

acceleration cards.

tinuity of its critical server operations. It also needed to do so in a cost-controlled

way that did not affect business operations.

design for a new environment based on current IT best practices. The refurbished data center was designed to include built-in

resiliency that would be supported by air-conditioning (AC) and an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

The IBM team then renovated the outdated secondary data center, providing and installing wall-mounted AC units to enhance

system cooling without losing valuable floor space. IBM also installed a single UPS to provide backup in the event of a power

outage. While performing the renovation, IBM used the nearby primary data center to help ensure that business operations

remained uninterrupted.

problems—including the fact that people needed to walk through it to get to

other parts of the building or to access the company’s uninterruptible power

supply (UPS). Further, the walls of the data center were adjacent to parking lots

for trucks and tractors, which created the potential for serious damage. The

company realized that these problems needed to be addressed immediately to

improve the security of its IT systems.

Solution:The company engaged IBM Global Technology Services to help it design and implement a new data center. The IBM team

began by redesigning the data center’s layout so as to avoid the “walk-through” issue. It also created a new auxiliary IT

room to house the machinery manufacturer’s UPS. Both the main data center and the auxiliary room were outfitted with

fire-resistant walls and doors, an advanced smoke-detection system and a fire-extinguishing system. IBM also built a new

raised floor—stronger than the old floor—to further improve the airflow around the company’s IT equipment.

matically transfers all data from the IBM System z™ mainframe to the storage system each day. The DS8100 disk system at

the recovery site is connected to an IBM zSeries® 890 server. Should the primary data center suffer an outage, a failover

feature allows the organization’s applications to continue to run without interruption.
