Site and facilities services—delivering comprehensive data center solutions, from assessment and strategy to construction and managementAs data has continued to proliferate, the demand for offsite centers to store and manage it has increased correspondingly.
And the requirements for these facilities are complex. Organizations are increasingly turning to high-powered servers with
more data-processing horsepower, requiring robust energy supplies and advanced cooling methods to avoid system fail-
ures. And it’s not enough to simply create a storage space with adequate power and cooling facilities. Today’s data center
is a critical tool in advancing enterprise business objectives, such as driving costs down, improving business resiliency,
complying with regulations and enhancing security.
Site and facilities services are a critical part of IBM’s Project Big Green, which includes a five-step approach to energy
efficiency in the data center: diagnose, build, virtualize, cool, measure and manage. As the cost of energy continues to
increase and the need for greater computing capacity grows, the concern around energy is taking center stage. Applying
energy-efficient technology products, skills and services can help you reduce the average data center’s energy consump-
tion by approximately 42 percent.

lOCATION: Ireland
INDUSTRY: Banking
pROFIlE: A major bank offering a wide range of personal banking services
SIzE: 10,000 or more employees
Client requirements:Upon the request of this financial services provider, IBM had conducted a risk
assessment of the company’s data centers—and found that two of them were
within the flood plain of a local river. Both facilities were also operating at full
capacity, and they had little available floor space to support expansion of the
bank’s IT systems. Furthermore, the infrastructure housed in the data centers
could not meet the bank’s security and business continuity requirements.
Clearly, it was time for a change.
Solution:Impressed with IBM’s extensive experience and deep expertise in similar projects, the company engaged IBM Global
Technology Services to help it plan, design and implement a data center–relocation solution. The project entailed:
Developing a business case for the solution, including a technical and financial impact assessment
Creating the technical design for new Type III+ data centers
Creating a new disaster recovery plan
Establishing plans for the data center transition, including selecting the property and moving to the new site.
Benefits:Transitioned to a new state-of-the-art Type III+ facility with minimal downtime and within budget
Helped ensure that critical systems would no longer be at risk in case the nearby river should flood
Supported compliance with business continuity and disaster recovery requirements by providing a resilient,
high-availability environment

IT branch of a commercial real estate financing provider dramatically improves system availability and reliability
IBM SpECIAlIzED FACIlITIES SERVICES
lOCATION: Germany
INDUSTRY: Banking, computer services
pROFIlE: The IT branch of a commercial real estate financing provider
SIzE: 1,000–,999 employees
Client requirements:Continuous application availability is essential to success for this company,
the IT division of a provider of commercial real estate financing. When a small
problem in its production server caused a 16-hour system failure, the company
realized that it needed to make a change. Its data center was outdated and
unreliable, and the company had no disaster recovery site—a potential weak-
ness in the security of both its data and its operations.
Solution:The IT agency turned to its trusted service provider, IBM Global Technology Services, to design and implement a state-
of-the-art data center—backed by a comprehensive business continuity and resiliency program. IBM designed a dual-site
infrastructure: Both data centers include an IBM System Storage™ DS8100 disk system. The storage disk in the primary
data center is attached to an IBM System z9™ Business Class mainframe. IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager V5.3 software auto-
matically transfers all data from the IBM System z™ mainframe to the storage system each day. The DS8100 disk system at
the recovery site is connected to an IBM zSeries® 890 server. Should the primary data center suffer an outage, a failover
feature allows the organization’s applications to continue to run without interruption.
Benefits:Significantly enhanced system reliability and availability
Provided a more powerful, flexible processing platform
Improved customer satisfaction and confidence in the company

lOCATION: Switzerland
INDUSTRY: Consumer products
pROFIlE: A manufacturer of custom and predesigned packaging solutions
SIzE: 1,000–,999 employees
Client requirements:Fast, steady growth had forced this packaging manufacturer to quickly deploy
multiple data centers. Yet each facility had its own security system, and the
company wasn’t sure which facilities were adequately protected against fire,
flooding, power surges and theft. The company needed to consolidate its
infrastructures at a single site to enhance and standardize its enterprisewide
security and protection against physical dangers.
Solution:The client’s preferred supplier, IBM Business Partner Lampertz, didn’t possess the in-house skills necessary to achieve its
client’s goal. Impressed with IBM’s expertise in IT architecture, it engaged IBM Global Technology Services to plan and
design the new data center. IBM provided project management services and a team of site and facilities services special-
ists to help throughout the engagement. The team assessed the viability of the client’s desired site and provided a list of its
potential weaknesses and changes required to optimize the location.
IBM then provided input for Lampertz and local fire-prevention and security services to use to work with the client to build
a 100-square-foot IT security room on the ground floor of the client’s headquarters. The room includes an auxiliary power
distribution system (APDS), an air-conditioning system, a fire-detection system, a burglar alarm and a monitoring system.
Benefits:Improved and standardized protection against fire, flooding, power surges and theft
Enhanced future growth capabilities with flexible and scalable technologies
