Editor's Message Hello IBC Members!

Here we are again in the middle of election season. This is probably the most important issue of Flare and I recommend everyone read through the election information provided. You will see measures on the ballot to amend the constitution and bylaws as well as platforms from each candidate running for office. We are also bringing you a new Q&A where the candidates answer questions submitted by you the membership. You voting ballot is also included in this issue and you have two options for submission. You can vote and submit electronically from the IBC website or you can print and mail your ballot so set aside some time to read through this issue and make sure you vote.

Also I’d like to announce that we have created a new Flare! committee. So far our committee members are getting to know the process and hashing out ideas for Flare!. We are also working on ways the magazine can evolve into a more magazine like structure so we can improve the experience for our electronic subscribers as well as our paper subscribers. Keep your eyes peeled for the coming issues because I’m sure everyone will be pleased with our new direction. Our wonderful volunteers are:

Code of Ethics of the International Betta Congress The International Betta Congress (IBC or The Congress) welcomes everyone who is interested in bettas, whether new at owning and/or raising bettas or an old pro who has raised thousands. The IBC feels there is room for all betta enthusiasts, be it young or old, new or experienced, individuals, families, teams or commercial breeders. The IBC is a club of individuals, families, teams, and commercial breeders who support the keeping, breeding, and/or the showing of bettas bred by our members; the research into the genetics of the betta species, and support of the preservation of the wild species through the Species Maintenance Program.

It is IBC policy that members who sell, trade or give bettas to others must represent the description of such bettas in a proper manner, so as to assure that the buyers, consumers or recipients are not misled. An intentional misrepresentation would be a violation of the IBC policy and Code of Ethics. Moreover, it is the policy of the IBC, that when bettas are entered in a show, all such bettas should be raised and bred by the entrant or exhibitor unless clearly stated otherwise. Failure to comply with this policy would be contrary to the IBC Code of Ethics.

The IBC does not participate in the fighting of fish for any reason and does not condone the fighting of bettas by others; nor does it support any individual or organization that does.

The IBC expects all members to conduct transactions with all parties in a responsible, fair and ethical manner, in all dealings concerning the purchase and sale of betta stock and supplies. While we hope that all disputes be amicably resolved among the parties, the Congress, however, is not an enforcement agency for the transaction of betta stock and/or supplies, nor can the IBC mediate disputes involving members or any individuals over said transactions. In the interest of fairness, the IBC does not endorse individual business enterprises, and does not allow the promotion of those enterprises in posts on the IBC website, its forums or discussion lists, whether they are personal testimonials or commercial advertisements.

The IBC believes that if all members abide by these simple guidelines we will have a happy, fun and stimulating club.

Judging Board News JANUARY, 2013 MARCH 2013 Hi Everyone, Well the Spring show season is off and running and congratulations to all the entrants. It’s great to see more people joining in the show system. The show calendar has filled up nicely for all Areas and the fall calendar is open so if you need to book a date please contact me. The Convention will be upon us quickly and I hope you have made your plans. I need the apprentices who will be certifying to contact me and let me know in order that we have the necessary paperwork in hand. Committee News Bettas In the Classroom Committee News

This project is off to a great start and the developed module is undergoing testing at one of the Premier Elementary Schools in the Tulsa Public School District. At Convention 2013 Kayla and I will be unveiling this project to the membership so they can see what it is all about. The reason for this project was a request from the E-Board of the IBC. We understand that there are fewer and fewer young people joining the IBC. The idea behind the project is to create enthusiasm in younger children so when they grow up they will remember the joy they had with their first Bettas and continue in the hobby. Few things build enthusiasm more than bringing a bunch of Bettas into a classroom of 5th graders and watching them excitedly looking at those bettas and planning on keeping them. The most frequent question I had was “When are you going to bring the females so we can breed them?” The future looks bright indeed! After we work out the kinks in this program I would like to see it spread across the United States as well as the World! Committee Chair, Gerald Griffin

Presidents Letter Greetings, I recently had the honor of being head judge at Kampffischefreunde's show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, and want to congratulate our Area 2 members, led by Peter Baerwald and Claire Pavia, for the incredible development of the hobby in Europe. The show was well-organized and was combined with a general aquarium show held every year at the venue. It was interesting to see what fish fanciers in Europe are doing and I was amazed at the variety of freshwater shrimp and other species on display. The show had over 40 entrants from 12 countries and over 320 quality fish. The auction was attended by at least 60 bidders, including one fellow from the U.S. consulate! Given the hard work that our European members have put into developing the hobby, I think it's time for Area 2 to have their own yearly convention; they deserve it! The Elections for various officers, including President, will be held this year and I heartily encourage you to participate in the process by voting for the candidates of your choice. You will see their platforms and answers to some questions posed to them in this issue of FLARE! You can determine the direction of the hobby by voting. I am not running for re-election but will continue to be active in the organization and do what I can to move the IBC to the next level. I can't tell you what a privilege it has been to be the 25th president of the IBC. I have met so many awesome people and have seen the development of our organization in social media grow by leaps and bounds. For this, I have to thank Karen MacAuley, who has administered our Facebook page and has grown it to almost 2000 members. We have experimented with ways to use our treasury to help our chapters, and we have had an active show year (much of it thanks to SCUBA) and increased Area 1 entries as a result. Area 2's development during my 3 1/2 years as president has been outstanding, for which I can take no credit. We have had challenges: Our website was in disarray after the disappearance of a webmaster some time ago; I am the first president to finish his/her term of office since 2007. Many others, however, have taken up the flag and made major contributions. I wish to especially thank the executive committee members under my terms: Steve Van Camp, Jack Tobin, Karen MacAuley, Cecilia Bailey, Christine Tanner, Jeremy Waugh, Melissa Migota, Joachim Menz, Peter Baerwald, Clare Pavia, Hermanus Haryanto, Connie Emery, and others. I want to thank Gerald Griffin for his custodianship of the Species Maintenance Program, and our FLARE! editors and Judging Board members. A Special thank you to Sally Van Camp for her continuous devotion to the IBC; if this was an athletic team, she would be Most Valuable Player. I would also like to thank Dr. Gene Lucas for his graciousness in being interviewed about IBC history and his travels, which is now on MP3 for posterity. I can't possibly thank everyone that I should, there's not enough space, but rest assured that you have my undying gratitude. The IBC has been the premiere organization of the betta hobby since the 1960s. It still is. As I end my term, I hope that you will give a small amount of your time and effort to make it even better. There is always room for improvement, and I have no doubt that you, IBC member, have much to offer. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president, and for your friendship and support. SCUBA Show Recap

The day starts like any other day when leaving for a fish show. We spend several hours packing up fish and then travel to the show on almost no sleep. The route the GPS takes us on goes straight through Dallas. First mistake, I made mention several times that maybe we should go around Dallas. Nope we headed true to the GPS! So we finally make it into Dallas, gas on an eighth of a tank, and we’re good. Then, as we are heading west we get stuck on an off ramp for an hour. The gas light comes on and now it’s time to worry! So after an hour we finally get off that ramp and call up gas stations on the GPS. We find a 7-11 in downtown Dallas and guess what? No gas pumps. We look around this part of Dallas and the only thing we can say is, “Thank God it’s not dark”, otherwise we would be panicked about now. Another 7-11 and again no gas pumps! This is not going well! After several minutes driving around knowing we are on fumes we see what looks to be an abandoned Gas Station but it has two gas pumps! We drive in and instantly a guy jumps out and wants to know what we want. I ask, “This is full service?” He says, “Yes, what you want?” I was never so happy to have gas and at $4 a gallon I didn’t care. I can see why he is there; to catch those who forget to fill up before going through Dallas! After getting some gas we are back on our way to the show! Once we get to the Show site everything goes well. By 7 pm the fish are all benched and it is time to go to dinner. Since I was finishing my apprenticeship, I was not allowed to bench. (Note* if you are looking for the easy job, judge the fish!) We make it to dinner with our dear friends Lori, Joe, Stacy and our new friend Tonya joined us. After much friendly discussion we returned to the

show site and prepared for the Judging on Saturday. Saturday starts with the show crew checking everything out before the judging. Kayla gave out the assignments and half of the classes went to Wally and Igor and the other half with Eryn and me. Judging with Eryn was a blast! We easily covered the categories and have identical judging styles. The judges finished judging the classes very close to the same time so we all closed down the show room and all had lunch together. (Another priceless meal with some of my best friends.) We had great discussions about a number of topics and after lunch back to the show room to pick out the Best of Variety and Reserve Best of Show. With the judging complete, we spent the rest of the night bagging up

the fish and getting them ready for either the auction or their trip back home. Sunday we conducted the auction. Although the turnout was very light it was still a lot of fun. The best part of the show was the number of people that joined us at one point or another and the people who signed up to join the Lone Star Betta Club. It is nice to see the various clubs grow in size and to pick up some good workers. I really appreciate how our group works hard to better the hobby and how our personalities mesh very well together. After the auction, we completed all of the paperwork then we started our 6 hour journey back home. This time we took our new alternate route and will take this route from now on, totally bypassing Dallas!

CURRENT ARTICLE/BYLAW PROPOSED ARTICLE/BYLAW

The Executive Board shall consist of the Officers, the Chairperson of the Judging Board, three (3) General At-Large Members of The Congress, and up to six (6) Area At-Large Members, one (1) from each of the Areas defined in Chapter one (1) of the Standards. All Officers and At-Large Members shall be at least eighteen (18) years of age. All Officers and General At- Large Members positions may be filled by any elected member in good standing from any Area.

The Executive Board shall consist of the Officers, the Chairperson of the Judging Board, three (3) General At- Large Members of The Congress, and up to six (6) Area At-Large Members, one (1) from each of the Areas defined in Chapter one (1) of the Standards. All Officers and At-Large Members shall be at least eighteen (18) years of age. All Officers and General At-Large Members positions may be filled by any elected member in good standing from any Area. A MEMBER WHO IS NOMINATED FOR THE EXECUTIVE BOARD MUST BE AN IBC MEMBER FOR AT LEAST ONE (1) YEAR BY JANUARY FIRST (1) OF THE ELECTION YEAR.

To start an IBC Chapter you need the following: Five (5) or more IBC members. A family membership counts as two (2) towards the five (5). The name and initials cannot be in conflict with other IBC Chapters. You must name a contact person for the chapter, who must be an IBC member. That person’s name and email address will be in FLARE! and on the BetterBettas.

TO START AND MAINTAIN AN IBC CHAPTER YOU NEED AT LEAST THREE (3) IBC MEMBERS. A family membership counts as two (2) towards the three (3). The name and initials cannot be in conflict with other IBC Chapters. You must name a contact person for the chapter, who must be an IBC member. That person’s name and email address will be in FLARE! and on the BetterBettas.

Any member of the Executive Board may be removed from office for failure to fulfill the responsibilities designated by the Constitution, By-laws and Standards of The Congress. Removal of a member of the Executive Board may be proposed by any member of the Executive Board, but removal can only be implemented by a four/fifths (4/5) vote of those on the Executive Board not under threat of removal. If the removed member of the Executive Board is the Judging board Chairperson, the members of the Judging Board must be notified of the vacancy. In this case, the vacancy shall be filled by an election held by the members of the Judging Board. The selection cannot be member previously removed from the Executive Board.

THE PRESIDENT SHALL CONTACT EACH EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER TO DISCUSS OR BRING FORTH PROPOSITIONS, AS THE PRESIDENT DEEMS ADVISABLE.FAILURE TO RESPOND TO SEVERAL REQUESTS FOR INPUT IN A TIMELY MANNER WITHOUT EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES IS A SIGN THAT AN EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER IS NOT FULFILLING HIS/HER DUTIES.IN GENERAL, EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES WILL BE DEFINED CLEARLY AS A MEDICAL OR PERSONAL NATURE, WHICH AFFECTS THE MEMBER FROM PERFORMING TO DO HIS/HER DUTIES.

THE PRESIDENT SHALL CONTACT THE EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER IN QUESTION.IF THE MEMBER IN QUESTION HAS NOT MADE CONTACT WITHIN THIRTY (30) DAY PERIOD, SHALL BE GROUNDS OF REMOVAL OF THAT MEMBER UNLESS A MAJORITY OF THE REMAINING MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD FINDS THAT EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES ARE PRESENT. ANY MEMBER OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD MAY PROPOSE REMOVAL OF A MEMBER OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD, BUT REMOVAL CAN ONLY BE IMPLEMENTED BY A FOUR/FIFTHS (4/5) VOTE OF THOSE ON THE EXECUTIVE BOARD NOT UNDER THREAT OF REMOVAL.IF THE REMOVED MEMBER IS THE JUDGING BOARD CHAIRPERSON, THE MEMBERS OF THE JUDGING BOARD MUST BE NOTIFIED OF THE VACANCY. IN THIS CASE, THE VACANCY SHALL BE FILLED BY AN ELECTION HELD BY THE MEMBERS OF THE JUDGING BOARD. THE SELECTION CANNOT BE THE MEMBER PREVIOUSLY REMOVED FROM THE EXECUTIVE BOARD.

CURRENT ARTICLE/BYLAW PROPOSED ARTICLE/BYLAW

The President shall send a letter no later than the 1st of September, November, February, and April to each of the members of the Executive Board and all standing committee chairpersons stating propositions for a vote and discussing such other business as the President deems advisable. Each member of the Executive Board shall respond no more than thirty (30) days after the postmark of the letter. Copies of responses of members of the Executive Board shall be mailed to all other members of the Executive Board. The failure of a member of the Executive Board to respond to a President’s letter within the prescribed time limit twice in succession shall grounds for removal of that member. In the event that it is necessary to remove a member of the Executive Board for failure to comply with the requirements of this Section, the President shall notify by registered mail, if available, the involved member of the Executive Board of his/her failure to abide by the requirements of this Section. The President shall include with the written notification a copy of the most recent President’s letter. The President shall provide notice to the involved member at least twenty-one (21) days prior to notifying the remaining members of the Executive Board. Unless a majority of the remaining members of the Executive Board find that extenuating circumstances are present, the removal of the involved member shall be automatic.

The Secretary shall record the minutes of all Membership and Board meetings and shall submit within thirty (30) days a copy of the minutes to the Editor for publication in the FLARE!. The Secretary shall maintain a current record of all members in The Congress by name and address. All correspondence other than membership inquiries shall be forwarded to the President for disposition and/or reply. The Secretary shall preserve and make proper disposition of all correspondence as directed by the President and shall forward all monies received for The Congress to the Treasurer.

The Secretary shall record the minutes of all Annual Membership and Executive Board meetings and shall submit within thirty (30) days a copy of the minutes to the Editor for publication in FLARE!. The Secretary shall keep a current record of all members in The Congress by name and address. THIS LIST WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE MEMBERSHIP CHAIRPERSON ON A MONTHLY BASIS. ALL CORRESPONDENCE, OTHER THAN MEMBERSHIP INQUIRIES, SHALL BE FORWARDED TO THE PRESIDENT FOR DISPOSITION AND/OR REPLY. Hi ya’ll, my name is Sherolyn Craig and I’d like to be your IBC President. As a child I always had a tank. We bought livebearers and even then I selectively bred for certain characteristics. After leaving home I bought some bettas and a book and bred them in galvanized tubs on my balcony. It was here I was hooked. Time and life got me away from the bettas until my son wanted one. With the internet I discovered the Halfmoon! I bought a beautiful Copper pair in Thailand and took my first step in importing. More searching and I found the IBC. I quickly joined and was hooked up with Jack Schendowich, who has been a mentor and friend. I was encouraged to show and drove out to Michigan where I met Dan, Peter and Mohan. My fish did well and all were patient answering my questions. The encouragement I got from that group made me feel part of a big family, and is something I want all members to feel. Since then I have finished well in the year end awards and I plan to become a judge. I have created quite a public “Face” and encourage Betta lovers at all levels. My vision for the IBC is to create that sense of family I felt at the beginning. The web site has some issues that need addressed. I have created several sites and am a partner on a site of the size and scope of the IBC project. I am confident that the site can be finished in 90 days with all the things promised at the beginning of the project. Once the site is up we can then focus on members. And not just getting new ones. From serious breeder to pet owner, all members need to feel welcome. As membership grows we need to encourage groups to form, clubs to be created and then mentor them to eventually hosting shows. We also need to develop the serious breeder by having a Mentor program. An issue that has been brought up and tabled for lack of a plan is Color Conservation. I have a simple way to start Color Conservation that will reward those that want to participate in it yet not take much additional time at a show. I also feel the leadership should be more open and accountable to the membership. I feel meeting dates and the agenda to be discussed need posted in a member area of the web site. After the meeting the minutes need posted so all can see what is going on. I believe this will make people feel this is their organization rather than leaderships’ and encourage them to be more involved. I also have ideas for several committees with the purpose of growing people and clubs as well as keeping us current on technology. First, I want to thank the person who nominated me for the position of Vice President. I joined the IBC in 2005. I went to my first convention in 2007 sponsored by Midwest Betta Club. I began my apprenticeship at that convention and become an IBC Certified Judge in 2008. I am a member of the IBC Constitution Committee and the IBC Flare committee. Fish keeping has been a hobby of mine for over 50 years. I kept

and bred livebearers for years. I did have a veil tail betta in my community tanks for years. I found the IBC from a member of a Freshwater Community page. I began clicking on banners of the various breeder sites and ordered my first pair of bettas. I saw my first Wild Bettas in one of the IBC member's fish rooms. From that day on, I was fascinated by the Wild Bettas. I began to study on the IBC SMP site which has great pictures and information. Now I have three kinds of wild bettas along with plakats and HMs. I would like to work with the E Board on writing an IBC informational flyer with one-third of the page to list the local chapter and contact information. If there is not a local chapter, information on the IBC site address would be provided. These flyers could be passed out at pet stores (with the permission of the owners) and aquarium association meetings. With the implementation of financial assistance, if needed, for a local chapter to put on a show, our number of shows in Area 1 may improve. Combining our betta shows with an Aquarium Association show is another idea I would like to pursue. I would like to see the IBC flyer with Show/Auction information passed out in the local area where the shows are held, too. I feel that many people do not know we have auctions in conjunction with our shows. Reliability and hard work are two of the attributes I bring to the IBC. I drive for hours to attend as many IBC shows in person as I can. I like helping at shows and meeting new people and seeing old friends. I thank you for your votes. Jack Tobin

I am Cecilia Bailey Mallett and I am running for Vice President in the upcoming election. I have been a member of the IBC and of First Coast Bettas since 2009. I currently hold the positions of Sales Chair, Website Committee Chair and I am also a member of our Constitution Committee. I am

working towards my judging apprentice certification, which I began at our last convention. I have been breeding bettas since 2007 so my passion for the hobby was established before joining the IBC. On a personal level I would like to share with each of you an experience that is very sensitive to me. In 1997 while climbing the ladder of success in my career, I had an illness which changed my life in a different way. At the age of 35, I had to accept the fact that I would no longer be able to be productive in the work force. My past experience details the position of management and public relations for a well-known corporation for several years. Today, as a volunteer for the IBC I can honestly say that it has been very rewarding and very therapeutic for me. Being a volunteer has also allowed me to offer my expertise and knowledge to certain areas of our organization. My mission and goals

are to work closely with the executive board and other IBC officials to define the mission of the organization. If chosen for this position, I would lead by example but also carry out my duties and responsibilities to help ensure that all mission objectives are met in a timely manner. From experience, I am skilled at developing and implementing standard practices and procedures to effect dramatic improvements in efficiency, productivity, and business processes toward successful attainment of organizational goals. I am equipped with excellent communication skills and I am able to effectively interact with members and with executive management. I retain leadership with motivational skills while influencing others to accomplish an objective, while directing our organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. I feel capable of planning and making new strategies. If you vote for me I promise that I will ensure that the organization fulfills its missions by planning for the future and monitoring current operations and evaluating the organization as a whole. I am excited to have the privilege to have been nominated for the Vice Presidential position of the IBC. I am enthusiastic to participate in the chance for a leadership position to further the IBC’s legacy and to grow the organization. The IBC’s most important resource is our members - I believe that the local chapters are also the members greatest resource. My primary intention is to develop an inviting and engaging

atmosphere within the IBC to encourage interaction and growth and to push the importance of local chapters. The world communicates much differently today than it did decades ago when the IBC was first created. New forms of communication, such as video conferencing and remote training are becoming the norm. Harnessing these technologies will be paramount to furthering the IBC’s reach and effectiveness by breaking geographical barriers. For many people it’s quite likely that the first and sometimes only impression of the IBC will come from our website and promotional materials. It’s important that this “first impression” is one of not only interest, simplicity and inclusion; But also an impression of safety and security. Utilizing the technologies is important and information security is paramount to creating a safe atmosphere and an inherent sense of trust in any organization. I believe my experience of security, technology, and communication proficiencies uniquely qualifies me to muster and lead others in creation of a unified brand and experience for all of the IBC’s print, web, and technological needs. The first objective mentioned in the IBC Constitution states that the congress should - “organize betta fanciers throughout the world”. This sounds like common sense but I feel the IBC has strayed away from this. I believe transparent leadership will give members and nonmembers alike the willingness to become involved in all aspects of the organization, and create an atmosphere where all members are willing and desire to be better engaged. My second goal for the IBC should I be elected is to forge a transparent leadership that clearly communicates to not only other leaders, but to the congress as a whole. I do not desire to accomplish this on my own,

or even with the support of a few select leadership - instead it will rely directly on the ability of the leadership to organize and empower individual members to become more involved and contribute their talents and passions to the organization. Although I am one of the senior members, the years have not diminished my desire to work with other betta enthusiasts who support the goals of IBC. I know the importance associated with being Secretary and I would like to continue in this position. I will do so with your support and vote.

The IBC has been since its founding an exceptional organization in its initial structure, its adherence to a standard of excellence and to a general understanding that all members should be treated with respect and their views considered fairly. This is just not so with many such organizations, and it has always been something I have much appreciated. . One reason I have been a member for so long. The first and most important thing I will do as President is to continue that tradition. I joined IBC in 1978, became an International Judge in 1981, was FLARE Editor from 1881 to 1989, Executive Board member for those 8 years as well, and Fellow of the Congress in 1986. I founded an IBC Chapter while living in Tucson, AZ. Then after coming to Colorado in 1992 I became active in the Colorado Aquarium Society, an organization founded in 1947 and made up of about 120 members. I have served in that organization as Board member for many years, Auction Chairman and currently as President, so I do have a resume in bettas and experience in many aspects of the effective management of such organizations. I see several avenues for valuable potential growth for IBC. In this technological age, we have available to us solutions to problems that would have seemed impossible just a few years ago. We need to explore these new avenues to offer members in other countries like Australia greatly improved access to the advantages of this organization. I would want to establish a committee to investigate these options with the established goal of expanding services to these new areas very soon. We have an amazing wealth of talent available within our membership community, and I would like to actively encourage the recruitment and development of this group of potential wizards to work on a number of

different projects. This does take some very deliberate digging and encouraging on the front end . . . and I will gladly take this on as one of my projects. We have had extended discussions on BetterBettas about mentoring new members, although we have not as yet established any formal machinery for this. There are a number of members including myself who have, quite on their own, taken up this role. This kind of support can be a lifeline for new members and also members who do not have a local Chapter. We could improve members’ services greatly if we were to formalize this kind of involvement and offer it to anyone who requests it. I would like to work very closely with the Chapters Chair to build new chapters and assist existing Chapters in recruiting new members. I believe I have some very good experience and developed techniques here, and expect they can have a significant effect on promoting planned growth. Larissa Williams

Hi All; thank you for reading my platform and considering me for a position on the IBC Judging Board. Bettas have been a hobby of mine for half my life because they are wonderful fish. Each betta is individual, personable, eager to see you every day, and they come with such variety of colors and forms! Raising bettas; seeing them nest, tending their eggs, and

then watching the fry grow; is a delight and a wonder for each and every spawn. The love of bettas brought me into the local California Betta Society and then the International Betta Congress because as much fun as it is to have bettas, it's also a great joy to share that love with other people and talk to people who understand it. In years previous, I was involved with the IBC to the extent that I received both the “Betta Person of the Year” and the “Outstanding Service Award” in 2002. Since then, I stayed a bit closer to CBS, working with the other members to make our club a strong, viable group that regularly holds two shows a year. We also hosted Convention in 2011. I have held every officer position in CBS, and have been Show Chair many times. I still breed and show my own fish, and in 2012 one of my royal blue longfin halfmoons won Best of Show. I placed 5th that year in overall IBC show point totals. In addition to breeding and competing, I’m also a discerning IBC Judge. I trained with several judges in the IBC apprenticeship program and received my Judging Certificate in 2009. Since then, I regularly judge shows at least once a year and often more. The shows I have worked have ranged from 300 to 500 fish entrants, and all judges working a show collaborate on Best of Variety and Best of Show awards. If elected, I would be a responsible and communicative Judging Board member for the IBC, supporting all clubs and IBC members in that position. Within the JB, I would advocate clarifying judging standards that are currently murky (ex: length of ventral on traditional plakats) and updating some that do not fit the current show fish (such as multicolor faults). I would work with our judges to make sure they have every opportunity to maintain certification, while keeping them abreast of changes in the Standards. I would try to ensure that membership feedback about shows and standards were brought to the

JB and we address them appropriately. I would listen carefully to all matters brought up to the board, evaluate all positions before making a decision, and (with the other JB personnel) provide reports back to the membership as to what actions have been taken. Communication with the IBC membership and the rest of the betta world is key to evolving to meet current needs. Judging is not mysterious, and showing should be fun and interactive. Gerald Griffin

What I see before the IBC is a very critical juncture. The IBC is facing new challenges that need to be handled in a professional manor becoming of the IBC. I know I am the candidate with the experience and knowledge in order to get this done. I have worked with and chaired various committees in the IBC and have shown my dedication again and again and in the process being awarded “Fellow of the Congress” and two “Outstanding Service Awards”. A good example of this was at the Convention in Florida where the IBC was seeking a solution to a very dismal show year. The organization that I founded pledged to make a good show year by conducting four successful shows and hosting Convention. I could not have done this without my core support from Lone Star Betta Club, Oklahoma Betta Breeders and Arizona Betta Heads. I owe much to my dear friends, Lori, Joe, Elaine and Stacy. They have worked tirelessly with Kayla and me to make this a reality. The IBC is facing some very serious issues right now that need to be addressed. The IBC is much more than a website! It is about the Bettas and its members. Right now we have groups in the IBC that feel disenfranchised. I will be working with these groups so that they see the value of their IBC membership. If there is no value to the membership then why join? As to what I see are things that need to be worked on. First Goal: To expand Area One, Two and Six. The members in United States have benefit to their membership yet the people in Canada, Europe and Australia question its value. This should have never have been the case. The IBC is a worldwide organization and as such must meet the expectations and provide value to ALL OF ITS MEMBERS! I have the solution to fix this problem. Second Goal: There is no reason why the IBC cannot have the best website for Bettas. The website committee currently in place will make the IBC website the “premier” go to site for all information on Bettas on the public side, on the private side it will contain all of “perks” of membership. Third Goal: To continue working on the “Bettas in the Classroom” project that Kayla and I have been working on. The IBC has noticed that very few young members are joining. By bringing younger members into the IBC, we are basically guaranteeing the continuance of the organization. Younger members are the future of the IBC. We will be using this model for the rest of the United States and expect to adapt it World Wide. Fourth Goal: The rebuilding of the SMP. I have had to overcome a number of hurdles and now that that is accomplished we will have it rebuilt to its former glory. The new website will be released in a number of languages so it will be universally available World Wide.

JD. Ewtuch My name is JD Ewtuch. I have been a member of the IBC since 1975 with a short hiatus in the 90s (1990s). I became a judge in 1977 and re-certified in 2000. I started breeding bettas in 1971 and in less than 20 years went from veil tails to super deltas winning 9 class championships. I maintained position in the Top 20, collected several Best of Show and Reserve Best of show awards. When I re-joined, I added to these totals and placed third in the top 20. The purpose of this article is to dispel the theory the Tubificids are inherently dangerous as a live food for tropical fishes. Also, as problematic as it may seem, caring for and feeding Tubifix worms is relatively easier than live baby Brine Shrimps. What is a Tubifex Worm? Tubifex tubifex is one of eleven documented tubificid segmented worm species. Sizes vary widely from one half to one and three quarter inches. They are segmented, not unlike the common earthworm (Lumbriscus terrestris) and have similar reproductive strategies. The shape of sexual organs determines the gender and specie. This, however, is extremely difficult as once spawning is completed these structures break down and are resorbed. Although Tubificids are hermaphroditic, cross fertilization is the preferred method of reproduction. To mate the worms face opposite directions and join anterior to ventral body surfaces. The penial setae of one penetrate the other and passes sperm. In the body cavity a cocoon encases eggs and sperm. After hatching the approximate 1/8 inch baby worms emerge from the adults’ body to begin life in sludge. It is degradation and decomposition of organic matter that houses and nourishes Tubifex worms. A favorite location is sewerage treatment plants but they can also be found in slow moving runoff from factories. The worm buries its’ head in the muck feasting on bacteria leaving its’ tail exposed to the current. Here it exchanges carbon dioxide for oxygen. Large quantities of hemoglobin found in the tail structure distribute oxygen throughout the worms’ body enabling it to exist in areas so polluted with rotting organic matter. It is here that provides us fish keepers the miracle food called the Tubifex worm. From the Wild to the Store In the beginning, the collecting of tubies (as they are fondly abbreviated by devoted fans) occurred mostly in sewerage. Long hours of trudging the sticky banks here or polluted streams from factory effluent yielded buckets of muck. Straining many of these through filthy screens produced a few pounds of worms. Then they were brought home to repeated rinses to purge them clean. Today mass culturing produces greater yields with less pathogens. Any dangerous bacteria are the result of poor worm husbandry rather than culturing. Commercially reared worms are as removed from the wild as our fishes which consume them. A common method of culturing is as follows: Re-filtered water is pumped through a cement tray 63” by 10” by 4”. The rate of flow is adjusted to keep the dissolved oxygen at a suitable rate. The media consists of wheat bran(20%), soybean meal(30%), mustard oil cake(20%), cow manure(20%), and 10% sand. After allowing this material to decompose and settle, an inoculation of Tubifex is spread evenly throughout the media. Waiting sixty days has been proved to provide optimum results. The worms are sold to fish food wholesalers where they are put in one gallon plastic bags and on to the retailer. To Buy or not to Buy? When purchasing earthworms at a tackle shop it is customary to examine the contents of their container. To facilitate the cup o’ worms are stored upside down in the ‘fridge as they migrate to the bottom. One should apply this approach to buying tubies. Do not hesitate to ask the salesperson to see where and how the worms are kept. If you do not it is similar to buying a pig in a poke. Although tubifex will survive on wet newspaper, that is a short term strategy. There are two more

efficient methods. Kept in an open container with cold running water is one only if the amount of Chloramine in the local water supply is at a safe level. The other is to keep them slightly submerged in aquarium water in the refrigerator. The first thing to look for when examining the worms at the store is color. There are two color phases to watch for not only in the pet store, but also when they are kept at home-red and dead. If uncertain err on the side of caution and walk away. Make sure that the salesperson removes a portion of tubies from the top of the tight red mass and never from the underside. As they haven’t eaten and experienced drastic housing changes some will perish. These will form a grayish area under the live red mass. Finding a store that sells live Tubifex is more difficult than discovering a good automobile repair shop. Most shoppers of the worm are long time fish breeders. And as they are a dying breed it is no longer lucrative to deal in worm flesh. Even when such a store is located there is no guarantee the tubies will be there waiting for you every on trip. Stores which get live foods delivery at the end of the day may not receive very happy worms on hot summer (or any time of year) days. Naturally do not expect them to be in top form if you buy them on the Thursday following the Friday delivery. Keeping Tubifex for Dummies As learned earlier there are two ways of keeping Tubifex - under running water and in the fridge. Unless you have a very understanding spouse, neither will be welcomed in your household. Personally, I prefer the latter. There usually is not much left after the initial feeding and what is can be kept in a very small container. If strategically located between the groceries, some may have a great deal of difficulty noticing them. However, if you have an unlimited supply of chloramine free running water in an out of the house location, there’s the answer for you. Simply rinsing tubies in a net with cold slowly running water is all the daily care needed. This wills separate any dead worms that may have died since the last feeding. As for feeding there are several ways depending different circumstances. Fish kept in small containers such as Betta splendens jars or gold fishes in bowls will eat a small amount of your fingertips. Or just drop them in. Breeders who keep one species in a bare bottomed tank can do the same or scatter them about. If, however, catfish inhabit the tank or if gravel covers the bottom the use of a worm feeder may prove beneficial. A worm feeder consists of a plastic cone with holes or slots with a floating ring. It may also be two parts: the cone and a separate floating ring. in this the entire portion of Tubifex can be added. As contrary as it seems, the worms will live in the warm tank water until consumed. Though they store better in cold water, they mostly live in warm stagnated waters. The cold temperatures keep the worms’ metabolism at a low rate so they won’t starve to death before we can utilize them. Why the Miracle Food? Research on Tubificids started in the late 1950s. Aquaculture demanded a low cost, rapid growth rate, and maximum return fry food. Pelleted foods were cheap but a live food that could be cultured inexpensively was sought for potentially higher growth rates. Experiments were under way not only on food fishes such as catfish (Clarias spc.), tilapia (Oreochromis mosambicus), and carp (Carassius carassius), but also on fresh water prawns (Macrobrachium). Was a Tubifex specie the answer? Consider its composition: Water- 83.9% to 93%, Crude Protein -64.3%, Fat - 31.7%, Ash -4.0%. All of this from

only an average of 11.1% dry body weight! Remarkably it has proven proper feeding of Tubifex will produce increased size of adult fish in short time spans, increase numbers of young, increased size of newborns, and prolong fertility periods.(4) Also the worms have high amounts of vitamin A for body growth and reproductive systems maintenance, vitamin D for bone strength, and vitamin B for body growth and circulatory system maintenance. Research has shown enhanced growth and survival rates of aqua cultured crustaceans and ornamental fishes. Significantly higher survival rates and ten times extra growth was found in catfish (Claria batrachus) fed Tubificid worms over those fed standard pellet food. Similar growth occurred in C. gariepinus and White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus). The latter grew 40% larger on these wigglers compared to inanimate commercial dry feed.(2) Betta splendens breeders of the late 1970s havereported growth rates in juveniles up to 1/2” per month. As with any live fish food there are positives and negatives. Even armed with the previous facts many aquarists will insist Tubifex worms are inherently diseased and the Grim Reaper follows

wherever they are utilized. Some complain they escape in the gravel. There are a number of problems that occur with any overfeeding. Killifish breeders will find worms in the spawning media. My personal observations are with mop spawners such as Aphyosemion and Fundulopanchax. They seem to prefer tubies over eggs for breakfast. Fishes guts incorporate many adaptations for efficient breakdown and absorption of essential nutrients. Both stomach and intestines remove proteins and lipids. Some have trouble with the large amounts of fats found in Tubifex. Livebearers such as guppies (Pocelia reticulata) can gain more body growth than finnage. Fancy guppies may be disqualified from the show ring due to lack of proportion between body size and caudal finnage. Overfeeding strikes again! Conclusion Man is a creature of habit. I’m not trying to change a breeders’ feeding regimen. Armed with the facts presented, and knowing the benefits of this miracle food, one may confidently make a purchase of Tubifex and provide ones fish a food that is safe, nutritional, and good eats.

What is SCUBA? By Gerald Griffin

I am frequently asked, “What is SCUBA?” I figured I would go ahead and explain. What SCUBA is, is unlike any other IBC Chapter. SCUBA was born at an IBC International Show that was held in Oklahoma City last show season. I scrambled to prepare for that show and pieced things together just so we could make it work. The end result was asking the Texas Betta Society and the Lone Star Betta Club to help the Oklahoma Betta Breeders Association put on that show and for all of us to work together to make the process smooth and less cumbersome work. This was a perfect marriage of clubs because all of the key members of each club worked together perfectly. I had the idea to make a permanent group of the betta clubs in the south central United States into a mutually supportive organization which would in turn help each other in running shows and supporting each other’s chapters. A few months later we decided to formalize this collaboration and get our mutually supportive group recognized as an Official IBC Chapter. First was to come up with the name and acronym. All sorts of ideas were tossed around, some were not very appealing, and then finally the acronym SCUBA was agreed on. The final touch was changing the last letter to Alliance instead of Association. I visualized the logo and Kayla created it within minutes of my description. Kayla and I then took the information and our bid to Convention 2012 in Jacksonville and made our pitch. SCUBA won the bid for Convention and was recognized as an official IBC Chapter. Currently SCUBA consists of the Oklahoma Betta Breeders Association, Lone Star Betta Club, Texas Betta Society, Betta Habari, Arizona Betta Heads, and Saint Louis Betta Society. We are looking forward to watching our chapters grow and conduct their own shows as well as looking forward to giving the IBC a fantastic convention in 2013!

Build a Glass Tank By Robert A. Charles, Sr.

This article is written for two reasons. Number one because I feel that we have a lot of young people who would get into the hobby of tropical fish but for the cost and number two I got the encouragement from IBC, Bill Hart and John Cirelly. All instructions though when read look like plagiarism from a Dow Chemical booklet or the paragraph written by Steven Dow in his book about Corydoras catfish. I'm sorry but there's only one basic way to do it. First off you need the following things: Masking tape, 1" wide Roll of paper towels Sheet of plastic cloth, (3'x3') Razor blades, single edge Old newspaper Sealer (clear, Zeith, Dow or General Electric Silicone Rubber Sealer) Caulking gun - I use the cartridge because of amount and cost. Note: Be sure to use clear sealer as some of the colored has a mildew retardant in it and it kills fish.

I make by Betta breeder aquariums, 12"H x 16"W and 25 and 1/2"L, you might ask why 25 and 1/2" long and 16" wide, this is not standard. Right! I was given 400 sheets of tempered 1/4" glass 16" x 25 and 1/2" and since you can't cut tempered glass - you use it as is! I've made over 70 aquariums and have adapted the size to make 5 different size aquariums all with 1/4" plate glass, all around, and after finished I use plastic trim on the edges and bottom which I obtain from a plywood supply house, that is used for edges and corners. It runs about 15 cents a linear foot. Now use a table about 1" or so from the wall, my worktable in my shop is 4'x4' covered with a soft indoor-outdoor carpet. I use an 8 x 8 x 16 concrete block instead of a wall and I build two aquariums at a time and let them sit about 24 hours until set, after 48 hours they can be trimmed of excess sealer with a razor blade and the extra waterproof bead can be run inside on the seams and smoothed out with a wet index finger. When working with sealer, constantly use paper towels and wipe your hands so you don't smudge the glass otherwise you'll have an extra clean up job to do. Begin: Lay newspaper on table cover with plastic (optional) because sealer doesn't stick to the plastic. Lay bottom glass down and run a bead 1/4" on glass at wall edge. Next lay side up against wall or block and down on sealer – the weight of glass will squeeze out sealer and seat. Next run a bead down backside edge of glass and along bottom and edge to insert end glass on one end, do the same on the other end. Now tape side to end with pieces of tape about 12" long after aligning back, bottom and end, a final line up can be done after finishing. Now the last is the front side, so you run beads down both edges of ends and across bottom edge, now you can use some pressure to seat ends to side - the bottom will of course seat itself under its’ own weight. Now you can check all your edges and ends for alignment and straighten out. Don't try to pick up aquarium - the bottom from glass weight -will be seated, check seams and ends and sides for good contact and no air bubbles - squeeze out bubbles if possible and re-tape front side to ends, this holds

pressure until cured. Remember anytime you squeeze out a bead of sealer when building you have five minutes to work it, then it skins over, also leave the aquarium to cure in place 24 hours before moving. I hope that this can be understood by all readers because the process is really simple, just difficult to put on paper - don't mind the vinegar smell of the sealer it's normal and goes away in 24 hours. I've built 8 thirty-gallon aquariums the same way and used Styrofoam for bottoms to prevent unevenness and pressure cracks, but this is the largest, I make using this method. Anything larger, I build with a floating bottom, the glass sets on its’ edge and the bottom more or less floats inside.

1. Run bend on bottom and set side glass. 2. Run bead and set end glass. 3. Run bead and set end glass. 4. Run bead and set side glass. 5. After 24 to 48 hours curing, run inside bead on all seams and use your wet index finger to smooth bead - this helps to prevent leaks – insurance! The diagram and 5 steps show how simple it is!
