IB Informed Ridgeview High School IB Program Newsletter June 2014 Greetings IB Booster members! The Booster Club was very “occupied” this year. We were not lacking in unforeseen issues, government issues, monetary issues, and in steadfast support of our IB students. I fielded several phone calls and emails regard- ing the Common Core, the fate of the IB program, and now the petition regarding a nonpartisan, appointed superintendent. Yes, things are changing, evolving, growing and reshaping. The IB Booster Club was no exception. I can say for certain that the IB Booster Club met our goals we set this year but it was not without effort and making some changes. Our support of the IB students and teachers was stronger than ever and I contribute this to our meeting times where we collectively put our thoughts together and decided on our priorities. I came into this year with the upfront and hon- est announcement that we faced a miserable budget. Nobody panicked and we worked together to fix it and we did. We ended the year able to offer three $500.00 scholarships to graduat- ing seniors, provided beautiful Christmas goodie boxes to our IB teachers, hosted the junior IB pinning reception, hosted a Teacher Appreciation luncheon (thank you to Steve and Patti Rambo for arranging the door prizes), and offered financial aid

June 2014

Greetings IB Booster members! The Booster Club was very “occupied” this year. We were not lacking in unforeseen issues, government issues, monetary issues, and in steadfast support of our IB students. I fielded several phone calls and emails regard-ing the Common Core, the fate of the IB program, and now the petition regarding a nonpartisan, appointed superintendent. I came into this year with the upfront and hon-est announcement that we faced a miserable budget. Nobody panicked and we worked together to fix it and we did. We ended the year able to offer three $500.00 scholarships to graduat-ing seniors, provided beautiful Christmas goodie boxes to our IB teachers, hosted the junior IB pinning reception, hosted a Teacher Appreciation luncheon (thank you to Steve and Patti Rambo for arranging the door prizes), and offered financial aid

for books. I’d say that is a job well done! We owe a huge thank you to Miss Fortune and Miss McDade for allowing the Booster Club to run the concessions at their drama productions. A huge thank you to Jennifer Workman and Diane Varner for all their work managing the concession every night, and a huge thank you to the Booster members for reaching into their own pockets to supply the concession. Finding the oppor-tunity to do the drama concession along with some decisive cut backs, we are ending the year in the black. Policies, procedures, rules and regulations will always be in existence for the education sys-tem but the IB Booster Club has a choice to exist or not. Though we are not the IB student, we are the parents of one (or more) and we witness how hard our students work for this because they so choose. It is in the best interest and common good of all involved to be an active, engaging, sup-porting member of the IB Booster Club and I for one am very grateful for it. I look forward to next year with Co-President Rod Swartz.

Do you know what you will be wearing to Graduation? I do! First, a huge smile. Second, A cap and gown and a tassel. What else? You will also be wearing a slew of cords, hoods, pins, a medal or two. All of these representations of your achievements. You will be wearing experience and knowledge, friendship and shared history. You have achieved so much and we are all extremely proud. It has been a busy year and a lot of work has been done, IA’s, exams, many essays and more CAS hours than you thought you would ever get done. There have been BETA Club conventions, Band, Miss and Mr. RHS Pageants, Sports, NHS meetings, Spanish or French Honor Society, two Drama Club plays and Chorus, not to mention Prom and other Senior events.

Be proud when you accept your awards and all of the decorations that you will wearing, you deserve it! College applications are done, acceptances sent out. Where ever you go to College/University, remember your IB friends and stay in touch. You will find that you are a part of a very large IB community. You will meet other former IB students that have shared similar experiences. Home is not so far away when you find common bonds with people you meet. Finally, CONGRATULATIONS! Prepare to go on and use all of the knowledge and skills that you have gained being an IB student at RHS. We expect great things from you all!

Studying and Socializing

Sophomores It’s hard to believe that we are approaching the end of another school year and the completion of your Pre IB program! Next year as you enter your Junior year, you will enter the International Baccalaureate Organization Program in which you will work towards your IB Diploma or Certificate.

This year you’ve learned to balance school work with extracurricular activities and you have managed to have some fun along the way. Many of you have been inducted into the Beta Club, Spanish Honor Society, National Honor Society, and the International Thespian Society.

The IB Boosters would like to extend a big Thank you to all the students who helped with the Meet & Greet for the incoming Freshman class. This event was enhanced by your presence and helped the incoming class feel welcomed and informed. Your help with set up and clean up was stellar!

We would like to extend congratulations to Michael Bueme, Haley Gregory, Halee Lester and Jonathan Sornig who were recently presented with The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence certificates for their participation in the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington D.C. in February.

The IB Boosters would like to wish all students a most relaxing, and safe summer break.

Thank you Sheila Brock! I would like to thank our IB Booster Club Vice President Sheila Brock for all she has con-tributed to the Booster Club. Sheila has been an IB Booster Board member for 3 years. Sheila is the only board member coming off this year because her daughter Michelle Brock is a graduating IB Senior. Thank you Sheila for creating the IB Directory, sending emails to members, volunteering time toward IB Booster activities, keeping track of our budget and keeping me calm during a few IB storms we have had to handle. Congratulations on Michelle’s graduation! Look for Sheila in 2021 when her youngest enters the IB program at Ridgeview High.

Sheila’s position is being filled by Rod Swartz. Welcome Rod!

The IB Booster Club would like to thank the following businesses for sponsoring our IB Teacher Appreciation Luncheon through their generous donations.

Thank you to ISLAND LIFE GRILLE on Fleming Island, PUBLIX, CHILI’S, MELLOW MUSHROOM, and the Thrasher-Horne for contributing gift cards to our IB Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.

Our IB teachers go above and beyond to stay certified to teach our IB students and The Booster Club loves to show our appreciation with a great free lunch and some great appreciation prizes. Thank you teachers for all you do!

Thanks to our business sponsors!
