Welcome

Dear Colleague,

Welcome to Insurance Age’s seventh annual UK Broker Summit.

I am delighted that you have chosen to spend your time with us here at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hampshire. I believe we have put together another programme full of networking sessions, debates and keynote speeches in keeping with the proud traditions of the event that will make your time with us well spent.

This year, as hopefully the economy continues to recover, should be an ideal opportunity for brokers to go for growth. Our exclusive summit will bring you further information, ideas and suggestions to help you grab those growth opportunities.

I know I speak for the whole team at Insurance Age when I say that we feel hugely privileged to put the event on for you. Naturally I encourage you to participate as fully as possible in all the discussions and boardroom groups to maximise their impact for the benefi t of everyone here.

As with previous events we have taken every care to give you and your peers the chance to contribute fully to the agenda. It certainly has thought leadership at its core but we are not complacent so please do not hesitate to give us feedback afterwards to make sure we can keep improving and delivering the best two days possible.

But for now I’d like to fi nish by once again welcoming you to the UK Broker Summit 2015. I hope you enjoy your time with us in what I am sure will be another successful event.

Best regards

Gerald Ratner,jewellery entrepreneur, Gerald Online

Gerald Ratner is a British household name. Born in 1949 and educated at Hendon County Grammar School, he joined the family fi rm Ratners in 1965.

He took over his family’s jewellery business in 1984 which had at that time 130 stores. By 1990 it had 2,500 stores, 25,000 employees, annual sales of 1.2 billion and profi ts of 121 million.

Unfortunately he went down in history (he was then chairman-chief executive of Ratners Group, the world’s largest jewellery retail company which included H Samuel and Ernest Jones), when at a corporate speaking engagement in 1991 at the Albert Hall for the Institute of Directors, he described a sherry decanter (one of their products), as total crap.

Gerald talks about his wild, up and down roller coaster ride. He is not doing too badly now having built an American business from scratch. With over 1000 shops in the USA he has becoming one of the few UK retailers to succeed on the other side of the Atlantic. He now runs the UK’s largest online jewellery business Gerald Online.

Before establishing Global Futures and Foresight, an independent futures research fi rm, he created and ran the Unisys internal Think Tank, The Global Future Forum. Prior to this he was head of strategic marketing for their $2bn global fi nancial services business.

Global Futures and Foresight is a research and consulting organisation that helps organisations be better prepared to embrace change, innovate and develop new strategies and solutions and helps clients to avoid the risk of being blindsided by external disruptive change.
