^GreetingsIromthe ChaftmanIn recent years, we have faced a whirhvind of social change. TheAsian economy, for example, has grown at breathtaking speed andAsia is well on its way to becoming one of the most important rcgionsin the world. IATSS Forum, which began in 1985 with a focus onlearning from the process ofJapanese modemization, has also met theneeds of changing times. Recent Forum programs have placed greaterweight than before on cunent issues facing ASEAN countfies even aswe continue to look to Japan as a case study. [n this way, the Forumprovides participants with a field for tackling such issues and for betterunderstanding each other through its unique motto, Thinkingano Learntng logemer,

At the same time, a rapid and profound shift toward globalization, notoniy in business and industry but also in terms ofpolitics, economics, the environment and even pandemic disease, has made ouls a timewhen many issues simply cannot be resolved by any single countryacting alone. In the academic world, too, such issues spill across thetraditional boundaries between disciplines. Since its inception, theIATSS Forum has pu$ued an extensive, interdisciplinary approach tonurtu ng human resources capable of contributing to the intemationalcommunity. In the twenty-frst century, we continue to move nimbly torespond to the needs of the future, adding training to the curdculum inareas such as how to lead intemational, interdisciplinary meetings.

Today, about 700 alumni are active in a broad runge of business, industrial, political and academic fields. Alumni associations takeadvantage ofthis occupational breadth, as well as a generational rangedeveloped over more than twenty years, as they grow ever moreenergetic and more firmly established within each country and acrcssthe ASEAN region.

I am especially grateful for the contributions of the lecturers, volunteers and other pafiies whose clear understanding of the IAISSForum spirit does so much to keep our program going and growing.

In closing, I hope participants and alumni alike will continue to utilizethe Forum as they go on to punue their own activities and contdbuteto society in the nations of Southeast Asla.

The program of IAISS Forum is developed by a diverse group ofIearned individuals from various fields, rvho make up the IATSSForum Program Committee. We invite top lecturers fiom academiaand industry. Specific issues addressed in each session vary to meet theneeds of the times. But our commitment is to focus not so much on in_depth research in a particular field, but on the liberal arts skillsrequired to become young leaders.

Activities after completingthe IAISS Forum Prbgram

After completing the IAISS Forum program, participants return totheir home countries and apply their experibnces at the Forum asleaders in a variety of fields. At the same time, they join IAISSForum alumni associations in their home countdes. Theseorganizations offer a place to continue sharing a wealth of.experiencethrough networks of alumni that span a broad range of ages andoccupational fields. Active alumni associations in each countryprovide opportunities for alumni to get together and exchange theIatest information from various fields. Alumni activities also includeinformational sessions for prospective applicants and NGO-typecommunity services such as English lessons or tmffic safety educationfor disadvantaged children.

International Alumni Meetings, which take place in a differentcountry every second year, provide an opportunity for representativesfrom each country's alumni association not only to report on theiractivities but also to engage in a lively exchange of views aboutrecent issues that concem them.

Japanese volunteer sfudy toursForum participants have many opportunities to interact withvolunteers during their stay in Japan, and such interaction continuesfollorving their return home through activit ies such as JapaneseVolunteer study tours.
