The PA committee had its AGM last week and is pleased to inform that Shamani Balasingam is our new Co-Chairperson for 2017 / 2018. Leong Wai Han retains her position as Treasurer while Lee Jia Hwei assumes the role of Secretary.

PA committees’ Social Media Presence For the benefit of our new parents, the PA committees of TIS and SST would like to announce that we have our own website & Facebook groups.

PA Website

PA Facebook Groups

Complementing our website, are our TISSEPPA/SSTSEPPA Facebook groups, run by the individual PA committees. These Facebook groups primarily serve to not only support the many activities and events within the individual schools but, unlike the website, it also serves for quick and constant dissemination of information and reminders. Both these Facebook groups are ‘closed’ groups, so only members of the groups are privy to the information posted. Do take time to read the ‘pinned post’ for our terms of use. The TISSEPPA committee also runs a Facebook group for Preloved Books and Uniforms where members of the school community can buy, sell or donate school books, uniforms and other school-related items. To join these groups: 1. Click on the link (below) relevant to you. 2. Click on ‘Join’ or ‘Request to Join’ 3. A question will pop up requesting for your child’s name and class. Please answer it. 4. Approval will then be made by the admins of the group. Here are the links to our Facebook groups: 1. For TIS parents - https://www.facebook.com/groups/tissepparentsassociation/ 2. For SST parents - https://www.facebook.com/groups/SSTPASEP/ 3. For whole school community - TIS Preloved - https://www.facebook.com/groups/tisseppreloved/ Please join us on Facebook and be a part of our growing community! Healthy participation and discussions in the group are encouraged so as to foster togetherness in our diverse school community. We look forward to your strong support in growing an active and positive Facebook community here.

The joint PA website contains information that is more static in nature. For example, in the ‘About Us’ page, you will find information like the PA Constitution, the Roles and Objectives of the PA, PA team, sub-committees, FAQs and Terms of Use. Other pages like ‘News and Events’ and ‘Gallery’ are, of course, updated as needed. Check it out at https://tenbyseppa.wixsite.com/tenbyseppa

Our film star of the future! Thank you

to Chloe and her mum in Year 3 for

representing Tenby so beautifully.

She was asked to do an interview with

begun.

Student Council:

The post cards are flying out of my office! The children have two questions to answer and we are encouraging

children to answer independently. The wonderful prefects will be choosing the student council finalists and the

official selection date is 27th October. Good luck Years 3,4,5 and 6.

A big thank

you to Aakash

other commitments

and is also a Health

and safety concern.

Thank you for your

Our Assembly:

Every Friday we have our Assemblies and the children sing the National Anthem and we also sing our Tenby

Primary song. Well done to all the children who have got medals outside of school, we love seeing your

Dear Parents,

Tenby International Secondary School and Sixth Form is an incredibly busy place, and already, only four weeks into term so much has happened that it is impossible for me to mention everything that our learners have been involved in. In this newsletter and throughout the year I will try to communicate with you some of the wonderful achievements and endeavours by our learners highlighting what a fantastic group of young people we are privileged to work with. I want to give a glimpse inside the classrooms as well as illuminating the extra-curricular activities of our learners with special mention to specific departments as the year goes on.

In the spirit of communication we started the year with a series of Parents Information Evenings. There has

now been an event for each year group from Year 7 to 13 and I have very much enjoyed meeting parents from

across the whole school. The idea of these is to set out the direction of the Secondary School and Sixth Form

this year and layout the major points for each cohort. The most important section of these evenings was

meeting the Heads of Year and Form Tutors for each year group. These people see your sons and daughter

every day and should be the first point of contact should you have any issues. If you did not manage to come

to the evenings the presentations with contact details are on the parent portal.

PSHE and Tutor Time

One of the developments this year is the introduction of a

new tutor time program and Personal, Social and Health

Education (PSHE) curriculum. In tutor time we are placing

the onus onto learners to be more independent and

participate in these sessions. Sixth Formers are

developing their own presentation and leadership skills,

whilst cultivating the Tenby core value of international

mindedness in our learners, by introducing some news

items from around the world which learners then have to

research and debate. Learners will also take part in

mindfulness activities which will help relax and distress our

young people allowing them to access learning more

effectively throughout the day. The PSHE curriculum is

specific for each year group and focuses on issues that

learners at secondary age have to deal with along with

specific topics such as options for Year 9, university

applications for Sixth Form, work experience for Year 10 or

exam preparation for Year 11. These have been designed

by our new Assistant Head for Pastoral Mr Faulkner and

the Heads of Year and will provide support for students

complementing an already rigorous academic curriculum.

House Competition

The Tenby house system continues to flourish this year and students have already been representing Dragon,

Falcon, Phoenix and Tiger houses in competitions ranging from handball to designing postcards. As part of the

Malaysia Day celebrations there was a name the state flag competition, congratulations to Ms Sageena’s form

7N who won this. The House system is really important at Tenby and it is fantastic to see students organizing

themselves into teams in order to win points. Points are always given not only for success but also for taking part

as we try to encourage our learners to try as many events and activities as possible throughout the year. Please

keep an eye out for House events on the school calendar and ask your sons and daughters if they are taking

part.

It is a privilege personally to be the Head of Tenby International Secondary School and Sixth Form and to be able to work with such an amazing group of learners and teachers. I will try and keep you informed of as much of the amazing happenings at our school as I can through facebook at TenbySetiaEcoPark and twitter @TenbySEPTISsec plus these newsletters where I hope to spotlight the school departments as the year goes on.

Best wishes

The Form One students went on their annual trip to Seremban, Negeri Sembilan on Tuesday 18.07.2017. A total of 63 students accompanied by 6 teachers participated in this trip. The objectives of the trip were to:

● learn the customs and culture of Minangkabau in Negeri Sembilan.

● explore different traditional games. ● explore the braided element to

produce art work using creative imagination.

● create slides that tell the story of the trip, incorporating pictures, sound and video gathered from the trip.

At the Negeri Sembilan State Museum the students took part in four major activities. For the Museum Guided Tour, the facilitator told

the students about Minangkabau, Malay history, and culture. For Traditional Games activities, the students had a chance to play and experience Galah Panjang, Konda

Kondi, and so on. The students also learnt to weave traditional basket at the Handicraft Center. The students had a great time learning how to wear Kain Pelekat and Kain

Telepuk too. During lunch, all the students were asked to sit in a traditional way, makan bersila, to

enjoy a special Negeri Sembilan Traditional food. Some of the students had their first experience eating using their fingers. The students had a good time and would definitely remember this meaningful educational trip.

On Thursday 20.07.2017, the a total of 62 Form Two students, accompanied by 6 teachers visited Janda Baik, Pahang. The objectives of the trip were to:

● identify the forest layer and plant species found in the tropical forest.

● classify the types of invertebrates according to their prominent features and to also provide examples on their findings.

● identify the lines and textures found in nature.

● draw the diagram of a dissected fish and label the organs involved in the digestive system.

Upon arrival, the chief facilitator En Rakib explained on the different forest layers found in the tropical forest. The students then went for the exhausting yet delightful river trekking activity.

On the way back to the hall, students were provided with plastic containers to enable them to capture insects which would be used for their next activity. Lunch was a simple affair enjoyed by the students and the students were quickly assigned to their next task – dissection of fish! The students were divided into groups and took turn to dissect the fish provided by the facilitators while a few more other groups were assigned to label and classify the insects that they found along the way. The fish dissection was an astonishing experience for the students as they have no experience in handling fish. Having said that, the fish were successfully dissected and the students labelled the fish successfully. The students had a good time and would definitely remember their exciting trip.

On Thursday 20.07.2017, the Form 3 students together with 6 teachers set out for their experiential learning trip at Bagan Lalang, Sepang excitedly. The high-spirited students then left Sekolah Sri Tenby in two buses with a 45 minute journey ahead of us. The instructor gave an entertaining talk that managed to captivate our attention throughout the ride. When we arrived at Bagan Lalang, Sepang, we had a briefing on our day's program and the basics of Geology. We were given worksheets that contained questions we had to answer throughout the day. For the activities, we were divided into 5 groups and were assigned to different outcrops to identify rocks. Each group had sketched a Traverse map which was then combined

together to form a complete geological map of the Environmental Interpretive Centre. After lunch, we went to Pantai Bagan Lalang and carried out some experiments using the shells, fish and crabs that we had caught with the guidance of our respective instructors. Each group leaders then shared their learning reflection of the day. We headed back to Sekolah Sri Tenby with a wider range of knowledge of Geology.

On Thursday 20.07.2017, the Form 4’s had

an experiential trip to Royal Selangor and the National Textile Museum. At the National Textile Museum we learned about the history of textile making, and the different types of materials used in textile making. Next, we went to the Royal Selangor where we learned the properties of pewter, the steps in making silverware, cutlery and utensils such as cups to drink and what is pewter used for. Besides that, we also participated in the “School of Hard Knocks”. That was the

highlight of our trip as we were given flat sheets of tin and were given the freedom to etch our names onto it. We then molded it into bowls and were able to keep the object to be displayed at our home. In the end, it was a memorable and enjoyable experience that we would not forget. The Form 5 students had a memorable and fun-filled day on the Friday 07.07.2017 making batik soap that was mostly visually appealing and taking part in a subject-based Amazing Race. Students applied their knowledge of saponification to practice as they mixed coconut oil and lye in the right proportions. Then using the batik technique that they learned, they proceeded to add colour and creativity to the chemical reaction. In the Amazing Race, teams raced to solve clues and riddles and perform tasks in all sorts of creative ways. Students had fun applying what they learnt in the classroom and felt that the experiential trip fostered closer ties amongst students and teachers.
