NEWS Salvatorian College Dear Parents, It has been a very busy and productive week for pupils in school. On Monday, 29th June we had 60 Year 4 pupils visiting from St Joseph's Primary school who participated in an Art and Photography workshop. The pupils were really excited about visiting our school and working with our pupils in Year 7 and 8. I would like to thank Miss Wilkinson and Ms Hands who led the day. On Tuesday, 30th June, we had over 200 Year 5 boys visiting from several of our Catholic primary partnership schools, including St Joseph’s, St John Fisher’s, St Teresa’s, St Anselm’s, St Georges’ and St Bernadette's. The boys were involved in several different Taster lessons including Science, Maths and Drama, which they really enjoyed. I would like to thank Mr Kerr who coordinated the day and I look forward to working with our Primary schools and pupils over the next year, as they prepare for secondary school transfer. On Wednesday, 1st July, we welcomed our new Year 7 pupils who spent the day with us at Salvatorian College, in preparation for joining us in September. The pupils met their new Form Tutors and Head of Year. During the day, pupils were involved in different lessons and learning activities. The feedback from parents and pupils was overwhelmingly positive about their rst day experience and I would like to thank Ms Pereira and Mr Jones who lead the day. I am condent that our school is going from strength to strength and our ability to host these events, for future pupils, shows the capacity we are creating as a school community. More and more parents are talking positively about our school and our pupils’ achievements, which will spread the good news in the wider community. Also on Wednesday a group of Year 10 pupils visited the Phoenix Theatre to see a production of the play ‘Bend it like Beckham’. Thank you to Ms Gallagher who led this enrichment activity for our pupils. On Monday, 6th July we will be uploading the Year 7 and 8 reports for parents onto the Learning Gateway. I apologise to Year 10 parents that we have been unable to provide Year 10 pupils with the results of their internal exams, however, we will publish these on Monday, 6th July. Throughout the week, we have had a former pupil of Salvatorian, Will O’Mullane working with the English department as part of his preparation to become a teacher. Will has said that he would be happy to share his experiences with pupils and parents in the near future. Next week we are looking forward to two major events in our school calendar - our whole school Pilgrimage to Westminster Cathedral on Wednesday, 8th July and our school Sports Day on Friday, 10th July. Pupil of the Month and all other pupils who were nominated

Last Wednesday we celebrated the Feast of the Dedication of Westminster Cathedral or as it is officially known: The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Precious Blood Dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, To his Blessed Mother, His Foster Father Saint Joseph, and St Peter his Vicar.

During this solemnity we are not celebrating the building but what it represents.

It is the Mother Church of all Catholics within the Diocese of Westminster and the  Cathedral or seat of our Bishop.  The Bishop represents Christ in the diocese and it is true that when we talk about our local Church we are talking about our Diocese.  Every Diocese is a Church in its own right and it is thorough communion with the Holy Father in Rome that we realise our role in the one mystical body of Christ.

It is a happy coincidence that the school will be having Mass with Bishop John Sherrington in the Cathedral next week.  The Early Church Fathers recognised the importance of the faithful, Clergy and Bishop gathering together to celebrate Mass.  Our pilgrimage to Westminster is therefore both an important part of the spiritual life of our Salvatorian Community but also an expression of the Catholicity or universality of the Church.

Mike Ratnasothy was a pupil at our school some 3 years ago. Mike is asking for our support. In June he will be volunteering for 10 weeks on a development programme in Bolivia. !This is part of International Citizen Service (ICS), which brings young people together to fight poverty and make a difference where it is needed most. He will be working alongside volunteers from the UK, on a project which works with young people who come from difficult backgrounds, to educate them in important social skills and other key areas. !ICS works with communities that have specifically requested their help. It also aims to inspire young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are passionate about long term community development.     With this in mind, the Maths Department have put together a Maths Fun Quiz which the Year 9 are taking part in on Tuesday morning in the hall. The students have put themselves in teams across the year group. All money raised for entry will be donated to the International Citizen Service.   Prizes of Amazon vouchers will be given to the top two teams!   We are looking forward to this exciting event and hope it will be fun for all! !Ms Ahluwalia

Pupils are required to make their own way to Bannisters Sports Centre, Uxbridge Road, Harrow, Middlesex HA3 6SW.

Pupils should arrive by 8:45am, and remain at Bannisters until they are dismissed at approximately 1.00 – 1:30 pm.

This is a compulsory school day and registers will be taken at the start of the day and before students are dismissed.

Students are to wear their indoor/white PE kit (no jewellery) and they will be issued with a letter corresponding to their House, which will be pinned on the front of their shirt.

Some pins will be available on the day, however it would be helpful if each student could provide their own pins. Students will need to look after their own possessions and they are advised to leave valuable items at home.

Students should bring a packed lunch as there will be no facility available for them to purchase food at Bannisters.

It is advised that all students bring a hat, sun cream, and plenty of water to keep them hydrated throughout the day. Be prepared for varied weather conditions.

Parents are more than welcome to come along and support their boys. We look forward to a good sporting day.

Creative Arts Day - Year 4 Taster Day

On Monday, 29th June we held our first 'Creative Arts Day' aimed at Year 4 pupils from our local primary school, St Joseph's. !Salvatorian had the pleasure of inviting 60 boys and girls to participate in the day. During the sessions the art department taught pupils a series of drawing activities, including continuous line, blind and from memory. !Miss Hands then led a session where students were able to learn some basic camera techniques to produce Pop art inspired portraits. Our own pupils supported throughout the day and were excellent ambassadors for the school. !

The sessions ended with students working with their own photographs to add further pop art features, such as benday dots and callouts. !St Joseph's pupils were also invited to enjoy lunch with us and the food from our café proved extremely popular. !The day ended with pupils and their parents invited to a preview of the art and technology exhibition, and to share in afternoon tea. !We were delighted to be part of this, and a special thanks goes to Miss Hands, Miss Pereira and the students who helped throughout the day.

Year 5 Taster Day

On Tuesday, 30th June Salvatorian college welcomed over two hundred Year 5 pupils from six primary schools in Harrow. !The pupils had some riddles to solve in the main hall before setting off to undertake a number of activities during the taster day - from Science experiments to Drama to fun Maths ( can maths ever be fun?). !The feedback from the Year 5 pupils and their teachers was extremely positive, as you can see from the example. !The fun Maths pupils came back with life-sized model examples of the longest snake ever, the longest hair ever and the tallest man ever. !Who knew maths could be so much fun? !Thank you Miss Ahluwalia! I must personally thank all of the Year 10 pupils who looked after the boys on the day and who proved themselves to be excellent role models. !Thank you also to the Science team -  Miss Ward , Miss Long, Miss Kelly and Miss Pathirana  and also to Miss Pasion for the wonderful Drama.   !Thank you to everyone who contributed to make the day so enjoyable. !Mr Kerr Assistant Head

Year 6 Taster Day

We welcomed our new year 7's on Wednesday, 1st July and were able to put on a fun filled day made especially pleasant by the warm, sunny weather! !Pupils were able to get involved in lots of different activities including Art/Photography, Languages, Drama, Science and Maths. !The boys absolutely loved the range of tasks that were put on offer and many commented on the fact that the experience was better than they ever expected. !Towards the latter part of the day, Mr Jones successfully ra n a  d o d g e b a l l c o m p e t i t i o n w h i c h t h e boys thoroughly enjoyed. !All in all the day was a tremendous success and we look forward to seeing our new Salvo's in the Autumn term! !Thanks to all who supported in making the day run smoothly! !

‘Bend It Like Beckham’ on the 1st of July was a fantastic performance.

It lived up to its reputation of being a feel-good musical.

The musical encourages you to have a good time while fusing culture, music, emotions and fun.

I was extremely impressed with the boys embracing a genre of music and dance they would not generally be used to. Many of the boys at the finale were dancing with the crowd and it was quite a warming site. We really do have a lot of undiscovered talent in our school.

The musical was jam-packed with warmth, humour and heart. It was a pleasure to take your sons on this theatre trip as they were excellent ambassadors for the school.

Watch out for Nosa Hayble’s Student Review in Next Week’s News Letter.
