IAM Version 9.1 Available Second Quarter 2012!

IAM Version 9.1 will be generally available in the second quarter 2012 with beta testing available in first quarter of 2012.

Major new functions and features of IAM version 9.1 include the following:

Enhancements to base IAM:

• IAM when running under z/OS 1.12 or higher will now be able to utilize above the line UCB’s without being captured. The UCB’s will no longer need to be moved below the line while the data set is opened, helping to reduce the below the line storage requirements.

• When attempting certain functions under ISPF, such as browsing or editing IAM files, ISPF will now always invoke any installation specified VSAM software package such as File-Aid, File-Manager, Ditto, or other software. In the past this did work for some IAM data sets.

Enhancements for IAM/RLS and IAM/PLEX Processing:

• Enable IAM/PLEX and IAM/RLS address spaces to re-establish record locks for recoverable files should the address space terminate, either on request or due to a failure. This is done through utilization of a newrecord lock journal file, and the data from the system logger or journals. Use of this function is optional.

• Enhancements to the IAM/PLEX and IAM/RLS support for CICS in the event of an IAM/PLEX or IAM/RLS address space termination. When it is detected that such an address space is no longer processing, all of the IAM files being processed through that IAM/PLEX or IAM/RLS address space will be closed. A list will be kept of the files that were being used so that they can be re-opened when the address space is active again. When the files are re-opened, any transaction back outs that had been deferred due to unavailability of the IAM files (shunted units of work) will be retried.

• IAM will now determine automatically whether an IAM file being opened under IAM/PLEX or IAM/RLS by CICS is a recoverable file and manage the record locks as appropriate to that status. In prior versions, it was assumed that all files opened by CICS were recoverable, unless the JRNAD=NONE override was specified. Use of the override is no longer necessary.

• A first phase of performance enhancement when IAM/PLEX or IAM/RLS is running on a systemthat has HiperDispatch mode active will be completed. It was determined by testing that usingfewer I/O subtasks is beneficial to throughput when HiperDispatch mode is active, and included is revisions to more efficiently dispatch the I/O requests within IAM/PLEX and IAM/RLS address spaces.

• A new journal switch record will be written when switching to a journal file to insure that at least one record has been written out to the new journal. This will prevent an unexpected reuse of theprior journal data set should the IAM/RLS region be recycled after the switch but before any newrecords had been written out to it.

• IAM/RLS support is part of the base IAM product. IAM/PLEX is a cost option to the base IAM product.

Questions & Answers:

Q: Does the VSAM CA Reclaim function apply to IAM?

A: IAM always has done space reclaim in the extended overflow area of the file at the record level and with IAM PRO (Prime Related Overflow) at the block level. This function requires no additional I/O and no need for any specification; it is an automatic function of the IAM access method. As IAMdoes not use the Control Area concept that VSAM has, the CA RECLAIM function is not applicable.

Users can specify the RECLAIMCA / NORECLAIMCA parameters or have it specified in the DataClass for IAM files, however the setting is ignored for IAM files.

Q: Does IAM support EAV volumes?A: Yes, IAM Version 9.0 and above supports IAM files on Extended Addressable Volumes (EAV). This function requires z/OS 1.11 or higher. For z/OS 1.11 requires that IAM files must be DFSMS Extended Format to reside on an EAV. For z/OS 1.12 and above the IAM data sets on EAV volumescan be Large Format Sequential or Basic Sequential format. EAV eligibility is set by defining the filewith a DFSMS Data Class that specifies the EATTR(OPT) attribute, or is defined with the IDCAMSDEFINE parameter EATTR(OPT).

IAM files on EAV’s cannot be accessed with prior versions of IAM.

Q: Does IAM support 1TB EAV volumes?A: Yes, IAM Version 9.0 and above support the 1 TB (one terabyte) EAV volumes, subject to the support provided by z/OS. Please be aware that Large Format Sequential data sets (DSNTYPE=LARGE) are limited by z/OS to using a maximum of 16,777,215 tracks per volume, which equatesto 1,118,482 cylinders that is a bit less than the 1,182,006 cylinders available. DFSMS ExtendedFormat IAM data sets will be able to utilize the entire capacity of the 1 TB EAV volumes.

IAM…Four Decades of INNOVATION:

IAM, one of INNOVATION’s original products, still offers outstanding performance and reliabilityfor VSAM-based applications. Despite all the hardware and software changes that have occurredin the last 40 years, IAM continues to outperform VSAM.

Even compared to enhancements like VSAM SMB, VSAM LSR, hardware compression and extended format files, the IAM structure provides better performance and takes less CPU timeand EXCPs than VSAM.

IAM has evolved in the last 40 years, but as we speak to existing IAM customers we sometimesfind that they are not utilizing some of the newer features or they have limited the use of IAM tojust a few key files. Some of the IAM features that you should be considering are:

• IAM extended format files

• Hardware compression

• IAM single system Record Level Sharing (RLS) support

• IAM journal records

• Support for VSAM files with alternate indexes and RRDS support (part of IAM/AIX, cost option)

• Support for z/OS SYSPLEX record level sharing for VSAM applications (IAM/PLEX, a cost option)

Many customers have benefited greatly by using IAM on just a few key files in their installation onlyto find further savings later when we demonstrated how many more files they had that could beconverted to IAM. There are 3 resources available to identify candidates for conversion to IAM:

• The IAMSMFVS program can be used to identify the VSAM files that will benefit most by conversion to IAM. The IAMSMFVS program is a standard feature in IAM, and even if you are not an IAM customer it can be sent to you.

• If you are an FDR customer, the VSAMSCAN Report from the FDRQUERY program can be usedto identify VSAM programs that may be candidates for conversion to IAM if you are concerned mostly about DASD space savings. The VSAMSCAN Report is documented in section 10.28 of the FDR manual with examples in section 10.29.

• If you are an FDRViEWS customer, FDRViEWS can also be used to identify VSAM data setsthat are good candidates to be converted to IAM.

IAM – Positive User Experience:

Below are statistics given to us by a customer that converted their TRMS database to IAM in October 2011, and converted their Parts Master File to IAM in January 2012. As you can see,IAM provided this customer with substantial savings on these Software Engineering of America(SEA) databases. The TRMS database used an average of approximately 90 million I/O's perweek under VSAM, and approximately 19 million under IAM, for a savings of about 79%. TheParts Master File used approximately 115 million I/O's per month on average under VSAM, and with IAM this was reduced to approximately 37 million, for a savings of about 68%.

The customer will be able to postpone costly CPU upgrades because of these positive results from IAM.
