No apologies for using anoth-er photo of Kevin Hood on

the front cover, Mark Gibb was inthe right place at the right time atWoodbridge MCC’s Good Friday Tri-al, thanks for the pictures Mark.

June’s T&T is often a bit on thethin side as there’s not a lot of clubactivity in May (same goes for therest of the summer really). I canusually cobble together a page ortwo of ‘stuff’ but six pages is a littletoo much for me so you’ve got a

twelve page T&T instead of sixteenthis month.

A man goes into a pub one evening, sits on a barstool and orders adrink.

As he is sipping his beer, he looks around and spots an attractive ladysitting at the opposite end of the bar, taking dainty sips of a cocktail.Suddenly - she sneezes, and in the process her glass eye pops out ofher head and rolls slowly down the top of the bar surface in the direc-

tion of the man.He instinctively puts his hand out and grabs it.

He is so proud, and in an act of chivalry, he walks up to the other endof the bar and returns the glass eye to the lady.

She is well impressedThey proceed to spend the rest of the evening chatting, laughing, and

getting to know each other. At the end of the evening, when the bar closes, the lady says “Why

don’t you come back for a nightcap?” and they both taxi to her apart-ment.

Then follows a night of fabulous passion! In the morning, the man has to leave for an appointment, but before

he goes, he snuggles up to the lady and says “Do you do this with eve-ry man you meet in the bar?”

She replied “No... only with those who catch my eye”

It sounds like most of theEFA/ACTC members had a good

time north of the boarder leadingup to and during the Two DayPre65 and SSDT events. Some goodstories straight off the press cameout at the last club night of the2019 and past events. Need tosqueeze in to one of the travellingadventure parties vehicles going toScotland one year to witness theexcitement and social myself.

Quiet month of May so lookingforward to June and July withshows and summer evening eventstaking place across the region.Chris Chapman informs us all of aevent on June 9th at the SnaquePit.

So for a little brain teaser thatmay receive a suitable prize;

How many Motor Cycle Manufactur-ing makes and models can youname that are the same as the firstname or/and surname of Actorsor Singers on Stage, Screen andTelevision. You can use their real orcharacter names. I do know of asoap character with both first andsecond names the same as MotorCycle Manufactures but I’ll giveyou a ‘starter for ten’ as an exam-ple - ‘James’ May.

Please send your answer viapost, email or even hand me a goodold fashioned piece of paper withyour answers on at the next event.Winner will be announced at thenext Club Night on the 2nd July

Historically, there can be fewthings that have created more

confusion for the classic Britishbike enthusiast, especially thosewho were born in the metric ageand those not from the UK, thanthe difficulty of translating the intri-cacies of obsolete British Standardthread systems and by extension, wrench sizes (spanners) into lan-guage comprehensible to the lay-man. Because of this, misapprehensions have been per-petuated. Terms like ‘whitworth’,‘Imperial’, ‘BS’ and so on are appliedcasually to things that they do notbelong to. This leads to further con-fusion.

If there is any aspect of Britishengineering which causes more hairto be pulled out in frustration, I'mnot sure I know what it is...

When referring to wrenches andthreads, ‘Imperial’, popularly refersto BOTH what some refer to asAmerican inch, AND British stand-ard. They are of course utterly dif-ferent, to make things as confusingas possible, and so to call both Im-perial is not entirely accurate, how-ever, SAE, & its child, The Unifiedthread system, are derived from theBritish Imperial system. Americaninch wrenches are measured

"Across the flats (A/F)" That is, the"size" of the wrench is measuredaccording to the hex on the fastener,

a 1/2" A/F wrench tightens or loos-ens a fastener with a 1/2" hex. These are the wrenches and fasten-ers used on Chevys, Fords andChryslers for generations...…

Older American wrenches usingthe SAE system were also markedaccording to bore size; however, butwe’ll just leave that there to savecomplicating matters further.British Imperial fasteners are meas-ured according to the BORE of thefastener itself, so a 1/2 BS wrenchfits a fastener with a 1/2" bore.... Inother words, when you look at thewrench, you might say to yourself

"Self, there's no way that's a 1/2wrench"... but it is of course, be-cause it turns a 1/2" diameterbolt... Now hang in there, stay with me,‘cos this is gonna get outrageouslyridiculous. We're even going to takea pause, Put the tea on and makesure you have an ample supply ofcrumpets for this one...so you cangather your wits, you're going toneed them for this next bit. BS vs.BSW vs. BSF…...

In the beginning, there were nostandard threads anywhere. Ifsomeone wanted to screw some-thing to something else, they cuttheir own threads. It’s tricky to conduct a success-ful industrial revolution when youdon’t have standard thread forms.

SPANNERS, BOLTS, NUTS& THREADS

The following has been compiled and written by a fellow residing acrossthe pond and via the wonders of the interweb I bring it to you.

Page 9: IALS RIBULATIONSR - Eastern Fourstroke Association...3 N o apologies for using anoth-er photo of Kevin Hood on the front cover, Mark Gibb was in the right place at the right time at

A gentleman named Joseph Whit-worth (later Sir Joseph Whitworth)came up with a standard system ofthreads. He designed the famous 55degree pitch thread in a number ofsizes from small to large, and thenproceeded to pick standard sizedhexes for each given bore of fasten-er cut with his thread. He pickedsizes for the wrenches he wanted touse to turn his fasteners and his

"hex sizes" do follow some arcanemechanical engineering principle, Iam not aware of what that principleis, but suffice to say , they are whatthey are. (the nice thing, is that forthe range of fasteners, there arefewer wrenches needed.) Joseph Whitworth's first coarsethread series became known asBSW (British Standard Whitworth)the very first standardized threadform in the world, hence why hestuck his name on it. It is NOT awrench size, but a THREAD.Mr. Whitworth's system did well foraround fifty years in the early In-dustrial Revolution, but after fiftyyears had passed, the engineeringwonks decided that an additionalFINE series of threads was re-quired... Hence BSF (British Stand-ard Fine), another series of threadsof finer pitch.... And here is the flyin the ointment. They decided that Mr. Whit-worth had been too generous withhis hex sizes, and that a given hexcould turn a fastener with a largerbore. This decision was taken dueto advances in metallurgy... Steelwas getting a lot stronger due toprogress in smelting and steelmak-ing.. Anyways, what these boffins didwas curse the world. Because of

their decision, a given wrench mayturn a coarse threaded fastener ofone size, or a fine threaded fastenerof 1/16" greater bore....example: 1/2BSW - 9/16BSF (toadd confusion, often the "F" is omit-ted, Snap-On’s wrench set, for ex-ample, omits the "F" thus: 7/16BS,and doesn’t list the ‘W’ at all.)So in this case, the wrench aboveturns a coarse threaded fastener of1/2" nominal bore OR a finepitched fastener of 9/16" nominalbore... This is why wrenches are oftenencountered with two apparent siz-es stamped on them. (5/16W-3/8BSF) to add a final poisonednail to the agony, when you get toquite large sizes, the difference goesup from 1/16" to 1/8" difference. So you have big spanners for busesmarked 3/4W – 7/8BS - Madness. During the war, the sizes werestandardized in that newer fasten-ers were made with both fine andcoarse threaded bolts and nuts hadthe same hex... So, to clear upthis section, Whitworth isn’t awrench size but a thread. American or Unified threads(UNF, UNC) and associated A/Ftools are not truly “Imperial”, al-though they are often called that.British Standard threads (BSW,BSF, BSCy) and tooling, are “Imperi-al”. BSW is a coarse pitch threadseries.

BSF (or BS) is a fine pitchthread series. (as an aside, it is rarein British bikes but occasionallyencountered on BSAs) The same wrenches turn bothtypes of fastener, but the finethreaded fastener will have a small-

er hex. Oh, sorry, sit down, we’re notdone. BSCy. British Standard CycleThread, or CEI (Cycle EngineersInstitute) Adding to the confusion, andfunnily enough the most commonthread system you are likely to en-counter if you own a machine datedbefore around 1966, is BSCy, orCycle thread. It is a fine (increasing-ly so as the bore size rises) pitchthread, British Standard, but notWhitworth form, 60 degree pitchrather than 55 degree. Cycle thread was designed foruse in bicycles, to combat looseningdue to vibration. It was deemed ide-al for use in motorcycles, and ap-pears in almost all marques upuntil the late sixties, and there areinternal BSCy threads on Triumphsand Nortons into the seventies. This is an interesting threadsystem due to the use of consistentthread counts for numerous fasten-er bore sizes. A ¼” bore fastenerhas 26 threads per inch (tpi), andso do all the sizes up to ½” bore. There is crossover around that sizeto 20tpi, so there is a 7/16 x 26tpithread and a 7/16 x 20tpi threadand the same with the ½” & 9/16”.The main nuts and bolts with thisthread on British bikes will be 26tpi,except for gearbox and engineshafts and axles, which often have20tpi. (Very small BSCy fastenershave 32tpi but are very rarely seenon motorbikes) Note: BSCy. (Cycle thread) fas-teners are turned with the samewrenches used for BSW and BSF.Taps and dies for all of thesethreads are available, British made

old stock BSW and BSF taps anddies are available though goodsources in the UK, but OEM Britishmanufactured BSCy taps and diesare tricky to find, suppliers onlystock sets from unknown sourcesthese days, likely of Indian or per-haps Eastern European origin.Horrifically, there is also the smallBA (British Association) series, found in Lucas stuff, electricalthings mainly, badge screws, gaug-es and the like, and BSP, BritishStandard Pipe, for oil lines… and, ifyou own an old Panther, Admiraltythread. I’ll tell you if you ask nicely.Note: BA wrenches are different, asmall series of 8 or so usually, Brit-ish bike guys can get away with thefour or five biggest ones. Sizes from0-12, 12 being smallest. Final edit: Newcomers to thehobby should be aware that manybikes from the late sixties and earlyseventies are especially confusingdue to the introduction, for the ben-efit of the US market, of Americaninch hardware (A/F) and UNF andUNC threads initially on the exteri-or only. The whole thing was intro-duced piecemeal over a period ofseveral years. Any BSA, Triumph orNorton, commencing in around1968 and running right through till1975, can be expected to have amixture of hardware and threads insundry places. Many UNF nuts andbolts on Nortons are stamped witha line of circles on the flats of thehex indicating UNF. Hope this helps someone, tookme a while to wrap my head aroundit when I first started.

Gary J. Parker.

Posted on the EFA Facebook page by John Daly the caption read:

“It's like I always say! Ya can't beat a Villiers carburettor!”

But my first thought was, ‘Has Raydon practice changed now? Is there arace track up the far corner or is someone loosing his marbles!’
