Dear members and friends,
Welcome to the winter edition of the IAASA
Newsletter Vol 7!
Again this quarter we were very busy with
many events happening.
Hotel Mumbai Movie
IAASA attended a movie night on 15th April,
showcasing the cinematic masterpiece Hotel
Mumbai. Nearly 35 people went through a
rollercoaster of emotions during the dramatic
thriller, ending the night with dinner at
IAASA Community Centre. Hotel Mumbai
brought back the memory of grief for the vic-
tims of the Mumbai terror attack that took
place in 2008, one of the darkest times Mum-
bai has ever faced.
IAASA participated in ANZAC Eve Youth
Vigil
Anzac Day is one of most important Australi-
an national days. It marks the anniversary of
the first major military action fought by Aus-
tralian and New Zealand forces during World
War I. Two Youth Representatives, Ms Krithi
Rai and Mr Ajith Karthikeyan, from IAASA
attended the Anzac Eve Youth Vigil held on
Wednesday 24th April at the National War Me-
morial.
IAASA organised Child Safe Training de-
livered by Vinaya Rai
On the 25th April we had a training session on
Child-Safe Environments. Eighteen people
attended and were attained an accredited a
certificate at no cost. They will be able use
this knowledge in the community in employ-
ment or in volunteer work involving children
under 18 years.
Yoga Workshop by a Yogacharya visiting
from India
IAASA held a Yoga Workshop on Saturday
27th April delivered by Swamiji Shree
Vachanananda from India. It drew almost 50
enthusiastic participants, who had a great deal
of fun during the various yoga exercises.
Annual Family Fun Day
The very next day, Sunday 28th, we conducted
our Annual Family Fun Day at Colley Re-
serve, Glenelg. I had invited Pakistan Australi-
an Association of South Australia (PAASA) to
initiate a joint family fun day and attract larger
numbers from both the Indian and Pakistan
community. True to the spirit of my invitation,
the Pakistani community members outnum-
bered our own community members. All fami-
lies who attended enjoyed various fun games
and a buffet pizza lunch.
Seniors Social Meet
We held a Seniors Meet on Sunday 19th June where 30 people attended to relish an entertain-ing carpet balls game and a sumptuous lunch.

President’s Diary International Yoga Day
IAASA celebrated International Yoga Day 2019 on
22nd June in IAASA hall. Yoga teacher, Sunila Vig
led the session. I was puzzled to see the lack of inter-
est for such a popular and well-loved activity. This
year was especially significant as the theme was Cli-
mate Action.
Port Adelaide Power Intercultural Program Car-
nival for 2019
I had the opportunity to attend the Port Adelaide Pow-
er Intercultural Program Carnival for 2019. What a
riveting day filled with talented youngsters showcas-
ing the vibrancy of cultural diversity and expression!
PAFC members led sessions for boys and girls to pro-
mote inclusion through AFL.
Eye Health Seminar
On Saturday 6th July, we had a successful Eye Health
Seminar by Dr Deepa Taranath. It was an informative
education session on eye health and eye care with a
huge turnout.
Maya Mazumdar Memorial Fund Fund
We are pleased to announce the establishment of the
Maya Mazumdar Memorial Fund from which we will
award an annual prize to the highest ATAR achieving
female student member of IAASA. Please encourage
any eligible students you may know to apply.
Thank you, Professor Jagan Mazumdar, for making the deposit for the next two Awards including funding a substantial term deposit with IAASA so the Award can be issued for many many years to come. Your generosity is much appreciated.
National Volunteer Week
The annual National Volunteer Week, which took
place from 20th-26th May, recognised IAASA’s
community services program and extended an invi-
tation to attend the Volunteer Awards and Recogni-
tion Ceremony. Our community services program
coordinator Susila Palaniappan won the Communi-
ty Services award. Congratulations Susila Ji!
SANFL Multicultural Day at Unley oval
On 2nd June, IAASA participated in the SANFL
Multicultural Day at Unley oval. Our stall was busy
selling hot chai and snacks and also gave four
dance performances. The event managers were im-
pressed with our efforts providing entertainment
and hot food and chai. Thank you to all the support-
ing committee members and their families who
helped out on the day as well as the extremely tal-
ented performers, and a big thank you to Susila and
Rani Turner for organising and coordinating the
event.
Eid-ul-Fitr
For the second consecutive year, IAASA celebrated
Eid-ul-Fitr on Tuesday 11th June with over 40 peo-
ple. I had invited the PAASA President, Mr Adeel
Sadiq, and other executive community members for
a simple yet heart-warming celebration. Many Indi-
an Muslim families came to up to me personally
with joyous thanks for IAASA celebrating Eid.
On the 15th June, PAASA invited me to attend their
Eid celebrations. It was a very grand function with
my presence as the IAASA President formally
acknowledged. We have started a new era of rela-
tionship between IAASA and PAASA. For another

HOTEL MUMBAI MOVIE NIGHT

Hotel Mumbai was a well received, critically ac-claimed movie in English about the terrorist attacks at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai in 2008. It was inspired by a documentary made about the Mumbai attacks and with stars like Dev Patel, Anupam Kher, Armie Hammer, Tilda Cobham-Hervey and others, was a real thriller with some great acting. It is particularly special to the Indian community in Adelaide as it was
almost entirely shot in Adelaide and many community members were
part of the film as extras or in small roles.
A special screening was organised by IAASA’s Community Coordina-
tor at the Nova in Prospect. After the movie, most re-grouped at the
IAASA CC to rehash the movie or make new friends and explore new
topics over a delicious dinner.
It was an evening with a difference, well enjoyed by all.

CHILD SAFE TRAINING
An accredited training in Safe Environments for Children and Young People
(previously called Child Safe Environments / Mandated Notification Training)
was offered free of cost to all members of the community.
This training and the certificate received on completion is valid for 3 years and
can be used in community, health, sporting, religious and other organisations
where anyone is employed or volunteers with children and young people under
18 years of age.
It was a 7-hour (1 day) Training by a qualified Dept of Child Protection Ac-
credited Trainer. 16 people attended Child Safe Training. They were all highly
satisfied with the training session and the feedback was that it was a very good
initiative by IAASA.

A yoga workshop was held in IAASACC on 27th April. We took advantage of a
visiting Yoga Guru, Swami Vachanananda ji from India who is also known as
Swaasa Guru or, literally, Breathe Guru. His classes and retreats in India focus
on the breath.
The workshop was well attended by men, women and children of all ages. It
was particularly encouraging to see teenagers participating in a yoga workshop.
Several said it was the first time they were attending a yoga workshop! 48 peo-
ple attended the workshop on a Saturday morning.
Swaasa Guru Swamiji Vachanananda conducted the workshop in a fun way, fo-
cusing on breathing and yoga postures. Most of the Asanas focused on the low-
er spine and hips. They were postures that helped keep the stomach, liver and
pancreas healthy.
What is Swasha? : It is Breath : Which is also called Praana : Also meaning
Life.
Swami Vachananda said that the longer and fewer (per minute) breaths we take,
the longer and healthier will be our life.
Take home messages from Swamiji
15 breaths per minute is considered normal / average.
If you can focus on your breath and breathe less than that number, then your
life will get better. The faster you breathe, the more your health will be affect-
ed.
Breathe gently, slowly, deeply from the abdomen, from deep within the stom-
ach. And smile!
Correct Breathing can decrease stress, increase life span.
Be selfish and take time to breath correctly. When breath is gone you are gone,
not even your soul mate will accompany you.
He ended the session with A, Aa, letters of the alphabet ending in laughter!!

FAMILY FUN DAY
This year, yet again, IAASA offered another opportunity for the families in our
community to come together and have a fun day outdoors with games and activi-
ties.
Nearly 25 people enjoyed the outing on the beautiful grass of Colley Reserve at
Glenelg. It was a perfect day with a cool breeze wafting in from the sea.
Sathish Srinivas, Prakash Biradar and Deepak Bhardwaj volunteered and helped
run the games.
Fun activities included playing cricket, soccer, lemon & spoon race, tug of war etc.
Frisbee, lagori (or pithu), bucket and water race was enjoyed by all till 4.00 pm.
IAASA President had extended the Family Fun Day invitation to PAASA
(Pakistan Australian Association of SA) members too. Four families, altogether
12 people from PAASA attended the event. We appreciated PAASA for responding
to our invitation and participating in our family fun day enthusiastically. We hope
that it will bring the two communities closer in the future.
This initiative could (hopefully) be the forerunner of holding joint events between
IAASA and PAASA. This is an idea for the future and could augur well for friend-
ship between the two communities.
It was overheard that poor show by Indian community members was due to chilly
weather or long weekend etc, but those who attended had fun as publicised and
enjoyed the free pizza lunch too. Those who missed, tough luck.
Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated for the second
time in a row by IAASA with a simple but
joyous celebration.
PAASA President and Executive members were invited
Songs by Sunila Vig and Vidya suited the occasion in melody and mean-
ing.
Talks by IAASA President, PAASA President, senior members Dr
Farooque and others sharing their thoughts and memories of Eid made
for a friendly informal evening of sharing and caring.
A traditional Eid feast at the end with Biryani, Sheer Khurma (Seviyan
kheer) and other delicacies added to the enjoyment of the whole evening.

EYE HEALTH SEMINAR

Under our Meet and Greet series where we all get to meet profession-
als or community members of eminence or certain expertise, we once
again invited a doctor to give a talk.
“Meet the Eye Doctor”, a seminar on Eye Health was organised on Sat-
urday, 6th July. Dr Deepa Taranath, an experienced Ophthalmologist
gave a very informative talk about common eye problems and how to
take care of our eyes.
It was an interactive session with plenty of opportunity to ask ques-
tions and the audience did so too. All questions were answered with
clear details by Dr Deepa. The seminar was quite an eye opener!
We received some great feedback and would like to thank Dr Deepa
Taranath for her excellent talk and all members who attended for their
engagement and participation.

Do you know what a black hole is?
P A G E 1 5 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1
This is what a black hole looks like
Image caption: The first image ever taken of a super massive black hole — M87, at the centre of the Virgo A galaxy. Image credit: Event Horizon Telescope.
Have you heard of Black hole?
This year is the 50th anniversary of Man walking on the moon.
And now another wonder has occurred; the first image of a black hole has been taken. Have you heard people referring to ‘gone down a black hole’ when the things have gone missing or money vanished.
In a huge breakthrough for the field of astronomy, researchers have unveiled the first image of a super massive black hole and its shadow.
The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) links telescopes around the globe to form an Earth-sized virtual tele-scope with unprecedented sensitivity and resolution. It is the result of years of international collabora-tion, and offers scientists a new way to study the most extreme objects in the universe — including black holes.
The black hole image that was captured is 55 million light-years from Earth, at the centre of Messier 87 — a massive galaxy in the nearby Virgo galaxy cluster. It is an extraordinary cosmic object with an enormous mass — 6.5 billion times that of the Sun — but an extremely compact size, warping spacetime and super-heating any material near it.
EHT Project Director Sheperd S Doeleman concluded, “We have achieved something presumed to be im-possible just a generation ago. Breakthroughs in technology, connections between the world’s best radio observatories and innovative algorithms all came together to open an entirely new window on black holes and the event horizon.”
