opportunities that does not come around very often but locally the i360 was THE project to win”.

Building a businessEleanor Harris, Chief Executive, spoke at the Cobb PR networking lunch, Brighton and Hove Hotel Association AGM and the Sussex Property Alliance Meeting. She also attended Construction Voice, and Platinum Magazines networking event , as well as the Argus’ 125th birthday lunch.

Pippa Atkinson, Sales Manager, presented at the Young Enterprise Awards, attended the Great for Groups trade fair, Chamber of Commerce breakfast and the i360 joined Gatwick Diamond business. We were also part of a Visit Brighton initiative to champion the cities conference and events venues to corporates including Purina-Nestle, Coca-Cola and Mercedes.

In a last flurry of activity, and in a bid to make us fit as well as busy, Ruth Chapman, Public Liaison Officer,

Welcome to the 10th project newsletter for the Brighton i360.

It is a hive of activity on our site at the moment, which you can read more about on pages 2 and 3.but we have also been busy behind the scenes.

Digital agency announcedWe have hired local digital agency Tilt to design our new website which is due to go live later this month.

Jon Malyon: Tilt’s managing director, said “We are delighted to be partnering the i360 and our team are genuinely excited about the project.

“As a Brighton firm, this was a project we really wanted to be part of. The i360 is going to be really positive for the city... it was one of those

attended the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon launch and we announced that the i360 team would be one of the first corporates to sign up to the half marathon relay!

Have you booked your i360 talk and tour? With the tower due to arrive next month, it is no great surprise to see that tickets are selling fast for our Fringe ‘talk and tour’ event, with architect David Marks. It’s the perfect opportunity to find out more about the vision and inspiration behind the i360 as well as what is going to happen this summer!

Tickets are £10, which includes a coffee at Alfresco during the talk, and a tour of the site. Tours run at 9am and 10.30am on 21st May.

Next month, barges will arrive at Brighton Beach from Holland to deliver the steel cans which will be used to construct the 162 metre high observation tower this summer.

Seven thousand tonnes of fill, gravel, shingle and chalk are being sucked out of an 8.5 metre deep hole as construction on the Brighton i360 steps up a gear.

Preparing the arches

Now that we have been granted listed building consent to rebuild the heavily corroded, structurally dilapidated arches behind our site, work has begun to turn them into part of our beach building.

We have moved the hoarding line on the upper promenade, which means cyclists and pedestrians need to share the pathway. Please be considerate adn share the space.

Preparing the basement

At the start of February we began to form the piles, the concrete ‘stilts’ that form the deep foundations of our building. Some of these piles interlock to form the basement wall. During April we put the capping beam on top – this is a solid layer that sits above the piles and transfers the load more evenly. We then dug down to 1.5m and added temporary props to make sure the walls

did not cave in when we began our big dig.

Digging 8.5m down into chalk on the seafront is no easy feat. We go below the tidal water level and so the engineer’s have drilled down 16m and put in well point pumps. These allow us to remove all the water and keep the area dry while we work. Once we pour concrete in, the ground is effectively ‘plugged’ and we can remove the pumps.

With the water removed, a long reach excavator arrived on site to begin the task of moving the basement material.

Once we have emptied the basement, we can put the steel cage in place that will strengthen the concrete once poured. The rods are arriving on-site as individual pieces at the moment, but will be carefully linked together to form a mesh like structure to fit

To help us lift in and out of the basement, we are using an 80 tonne crawler crane; the Hitachi SCX8000 (right). This hi-tech piece of machinery has a high performance exhaust filter, cleaning the air using anti-pollution technology. When tests were done in London, the air that came out of the exhaust was cleaner than the air the people of the city was breathing!

Preparing for the towers arrival

Preparing the beach

We need to reinforce the beach in front of our site as this is where the 100m crane that builds the tower will sit. We will also store our 17 cans in this area, ready to be lifted over the path and positioned one-by-one.

We are using the excavated material from the site to create a beach platform. Shingle is sucked under the footpath using a suction excavator (main picture) and then deposited onto the beach where needed. We will remove it all once the tower is built.

The concrete pour

On May 30th we will undertake the 1st of 2 major concrete pours. 4750 tonnes are needed to create our basement. and so we have taken over two local concrete plants for the day.

We will be working from 6am to 9pm, with trucks arriving approximately every 5 minutes to keep the concrete flowing. We have worked closely with the Council on a traffic management plan, and will not be holding our waiting vehicles on the Kings Road.

To celebrate what we feel is the start of the summer works, we will be hosting a family-friendly event to coincide with the pour - details below. Why not coincide a visit with a trip to the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival on Hove Lawns? A fun family day out!

Although the focus of our tower build has been on the factory in Holland where our tower cans have been manufactured, for the last month we have been making the most of UK steelworks James and Taylor. They have the specialist skill to manufacture a crucial part of our tower: the cladding.

What is cladding? We need to reduce the effects of the wind on our slender tower. By cladding it with a rough, perforated surface, the wind can flow through it, rather than swirling around it and causing vortices, which make the tower vibrate.

How do you make cladding material ?The material selected; eyetech, is manufactured by a virtual zero waste process that expands sheets of aluminium to make them much larger. It also creates their distinctive undulating perforated surface. A clever, offset, partial shearing action forms flat panels which are then curved to create the individual cladding quadrants. Each fabricated aluminium panel is then treated to a high performance anti-corrosion coating.

Not just functional

The cladding covers the tower so it needs to be beautiful as well as functional. James and Taylor are specialists in facade engineering and have worked on projects like the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, Athletes Village in London and Selfridges in Birmingham. Our tower will look amazing!

When wiil the cladding be added? On the seafront! As each can is bolted on we add the cladding.

A BEACH interviewLast month, Brighton i360 Chief Executive, Eleanor Harris, was interviewed by young people about working in the tourism industry and what sort of skills employees are looking for in potential recruits.

It was part of the Brighton Employability Advice and

Careers Hut, or BEACH as it is more commonly known – an initiative run by Brighton and Hove City Council, BrightonandHoveJobs.com and local schools. The project has been designed by local secondary school pupils and back in 2013 it won a Brighton and Hove and aims to put young people face to face with local employers

Eleanor said: “We expect to employ lots of young people at the Brighton i360 when we open next year in entry level customer facing jobs . The tourism industry is a key employer for young people with 39% of employees aged under 30.

Young EnterpriseWhile Eleanor was supporting Beach, i360 Sales Manager, Pippa Atkinson, was championing Young Enterprise. the UK’s leading enterprise and financial education charity.

Each year student groups across Brighton and Hove and Lewes form a Young Enterprise company, working with a mentor to get direct experience of the business world. The i360 sponsored the ‘Best Product or Service’ award and Pippa was thrilled to present Seaford Community College the prize for their beautifully designed mugs.

Inspiring the next generation

Youth in ActionThe Argus have just announced the Youth in Action awards 2015, recognising the remarkable achievements of youngsters, teachers and support staff.

The i360 is sponsoring the ‘Excursion of the Year’ award -looking at innovative ways in which learning has been taken outside of the classroom. This is a cause close to our hearts as we are already looking at ways in which we can make a visit to the i360 a fantastic learning experience.

Every state-school child in Brighton and Hove will receive one free visit during their school career, so it’s important we make their time at the i360 memorable.
