A VALUABLE TONIC AND REMEDIAL AliENT, INDORSED AND RECOMMENDED BY THE ENTIRE MEDICAL FRATERNITY. Of ail medicinal preparations that have bc-np- upon the market in lect-n- t years, the extract 0. malt has proved itself one of the most valuable h.s a tonic or remedial beverage. It has received the unqualilied recognition and support of phy- sicians, and is freely prescribed by them in many cases, especially where the nervous or physical systems have been impaired by disease or over. ork. The house of "DAVID NICHOLSON," ol this city, has recently Introduced a pure malt extract of high character, made at their request and under their suggestions by Mr. Adolphus Id. sch, and which is popularly known us "NICH- OLSON'S LUJCID BREAD." from its life-givi- and heaHh-restoriii- g properties. A sample sub- mitted to Dr.' P. L. James was made the subject of a chemical analysis by him, and the result of his investigations are give n in the appended cer-tillca- T. Lons, April 2:1, ls;si. "W. J tie results, us shown in th following summary, are necessarily only aimroxi mate, but are sullii-ieiitl- accurate for all practical purposes. "ine Kpecimens suumitteu ronttisuu of an efferves-in- tluii, dark brown by direct a-i- d of deep rubj- - color by transmitted light, resembling in general appearance and behavior u very supe nor article of porter. Its taste was, however much milder artdmore preafctnt than porter, be nig souiewnat sweeter tban bctr, the sweetness masked and covered by a very pleasant bitter ueriveu eviuetitiy irom hops. The specific gravity 01 a .sample iresn 1 om the bottle im 1.022 plus. Amount of extractive matter in 50 cubic cent! metres of the tlutd is 3.y grammes, or about 8 per ceiu. Amount 01 uiconoi, per cent, is .84 nlns. The extractive mattt r is apparently identical with the "extractum maltis" of Trommer, or of the uerman I'harmacopceia. It consists almost en tirely or malt sugar, dextrine, being free from fatty acids, etc. The fluid contains a very large amount of diastase, as shown by the fact that it easily liquefies an equal bulk of gelatinous starch This fact, its low percentage of alcohol, its effer vescence, Its delightful taste and odor, all combine to recommend Nicholson's malt extract as being a most nourishing beverage, and the best article 01 me sort mat nas ever come under my exami nation, uespectiuuy, "FRANK L. AN ABSOLUTELY PURE EXTRACT OFMALT."

A VALUABLE TONIC AND REMEDIALAliENT,

INDORSED AND RECOMMENDED BY THEENTIRE MEDICAL FRATERNITY.

Of ail medicinal preparations that have bc-np-

upon the market in lect-n-t years, the extract 0.malt has proved itself one of the most valuableh.s a tonic or remedial beverage. It has receivedthe unqualilied recognition and support of phy-sicians, and is freely prescribed by them in manycases, especially where the nervous or physicalsystems have been impaired by disease or over.

ork. The house of "DAVID NICHOLSON,"ol this city, has recently Introduced a pure maltextract of high character, made at their requestand under their suggestions by Mr. AdolphusId. sch, and which is popularly known us "NICH-OLSON'S LUJCID BREAD." from its life-givi-

and heaHh-restoriii- g properties. A sample sub-mitted to Dr.' P. L. James was made the subjectof a chemical analysis by him, and the result ofhis investigations are give n in the appended cer-tillca-

Sir: Having submitted 'the Nicholson malt extract to examination, its requested, I take pleasure111 repining u.i t 1 llni it to be all that the proprietors claim lor it. J tie results, us shown in thfollowing summary, are necessarily only aimroximate, but are sullii-ieiitl- accurate for all practicalpurposes.

"ine Kpecimens suumitteu ronttisuu of anefferves-in- tluii, dark brown by direct a-i- d ofdeep rubj-- color by transmitted light, resemblingin general appearance and behavior u very supenor article of porter. Its taste was, howevermuch milder artdmore preafctnt than porter, benig souiewnat sweeter tban bctr, the sweetnessmasked and covered by a very pleasant bitterueriveu eviuetitiy irom hops. The specific gravity01 a .sample iresn 1 om the bottle im 1.022 plus.Amount of extractive matter in 50 cubic cent!metres of the tlutd is 3.y grammes, or about 8 perceiu. Amount 01 uiconoi, per cent, is .84 nlns. The extractive mattt r is apparently identical withthe "extractum maltis" of Trommer, or of theuerman I'harmacopceia. It consists almost entirely or malt sugar, dextrine, being free fromfatty acids, etc. The fluid contains a very largeamount of diastase, as shown by the fact that iteasily liquefies an equal bulk of gelatinous starchThis fact, its low percentage of alcohol, its effervescence, Its delightful taste and odor, all combineto recommend Nicholson's malt extract as beinga most nourishing beverage, and the best article01 me sort mat nas ever come under my examination, uespectiuuy,

LOCAL AND GENERAL.THE DAILY not advise such a loose operation as Mr.Carter would have the public believe.

Before concluding our remarks on thispoint, however, we have to correct an in-

accuracy as to dates in our own article. The continued bonds were issued under

erage. As well hold the Government re-

sponsible for the introduction of snakes. The hard logic of common sense wouldsuggest a very different explanation of

the incident that has already deprivedthe National candidates for Honolulu ofone vote.

CAMPAIGN NOTES.

We agree w ith Mr. Marques that thosewho live in glasshouses tdiould not throwatones. This is as trite a saying as it isancient and true, but the danger to adweller in a glass mansion would begreatly increased if he selected anti-Chine- se

boulders, when the transparent andbrittle roof and walls surrounding andsheltering him were framed and glazed

"by Chinese hands. "

And so it lias come to pass thatthe Carter-Waterhou- se combination in-

sults and belittles the Squires-Marqu-es

company. The "tramp" organ tells thelatter that they cannot muster a corpor-

al's guard of Opposition voters betweenthem, and therefore that they had verymuch better retire from the politicalarena altogether, and humbly ask for-

giveness from the great men born to ruleor ruin the Hawaiian Kingdom. To animpartial spectator this demand, withits impertinent assumption of superiorit-y,- is about as cool a piece of business ascould be imagined. Who and what areMessrs. Carter and Waterhouse thatthey are to be preferred to Messrs.Squires and Marques ? What principleor policy do they represent which theircompetitors for the Opposition vote donot? 'Are they closer to the hearts ofthe people, or wliat? Of course thisquarrel does not concern us, because theNational ticket will be elected by anoverwhelming majority, but we object tothe introduction in this campaign of theidea that self-constitut- ed leaders maydictate to the voters and candidates whatthey should or should not do.

According to the "tramp" organs it isa good joke to rob the mail to get posses-sion of the corresindence of Govern-ment supporters, and it is also "bull-dosin- g"

on the part of the writer and thegentleman to whom a stolen letter is ad-

dressed, to make a demand for it fromthe Opposition newspaper which pub-lished it. This is a fair sample of sancti-fied Opiositian ethics. "The end justifiesthe means." By parity of reasoning itwould not be an offense against moralsto use money stolen from the Post Officesafe to supplement the f20,000 corrup-tion fund "put up" by the Oppositionto buy tax receipts and otherwise "influ-ence the election." We don't supposefor a moment that such a thing hap-pened, but there is no difference in theeye of the law or in morals between rob-

bing a post office safe and robbing a poetoffice letter bag. Both are felonies.Yet the "tramp organs treat the steal-ing of a letter from the mail as a littleOpposition joker, while ' they profess tobe in full cry after the scalps of the saferobbers.

The Opposition is mightily botheredabout gin, to judge from the tone and re-

marks of the "tramp" organs. This isnatural enough, seeing that one of theirbest men is engaged in the importationand sale of gin ; and as he is a candidatefor one of the country districts of Oahu,it may have been bottles from his storethat the informant of a local contempo-rary stated lined the road to his politicalheadquarters. There is nothing wrongin the sale of gin, or in drinking it forthat matter in moderation, but when a

ed "frightful example" of thesuperior influence of gin on the Opposi-tion understanding, takes the stump toadvocate the election of Mr. J. O. Carter,as recently happened at the HonoluluFoundry, "there must be something rot-

ten in the State of Hawaii," to quote thatgentleman's own? sententious utterancein the "Bulletin." The Lehua coinci-

dence may be passed without comment, its suggestions having so greatly exas-

perated the Opposition gin party ; but itis surely too great a stretch of imagina-

tion to charge the National candidateswith periling the lives of their own votersby filling them with this obnoxious bev

the 9 per cent Act of 1872 and not underthe 9 per cent Act of 1876, as Btated byus. Both Acts, however, had a similarprovision regarding the twenty-yea- r

limit.

Mr. Henry Waterhouse is keepingvery quiet. For a man of his activetemperament this is a wonder, and hisfriends are beginning to think that he isplaying a practical joke. They cannotimagine him allying liimself with the, nondescript crowd of political dead-beat- s

who are on the Independent Oppositionticket. But there is no telling what mayhappen to a man in Honolulu at electiontimes. Adversity makes one acquaintedwith strange bedfellows. Mr. Water-hous- e

being ambitious to serve hiscountry in the Legislature, and no oneever dreaming of him as a possible candi-date, was forced to nominate himself. This he did with a coyness and modestyone would not expect from so old astager. He in now in the field solicitingvotes and has very active agents canvass-ing for him. But the fun of the thing isthat no one knows exactly where to placehim. At one time he is on the Opposi-tion ticket, at another he is entirely in-

dependent, again he is a Governmentsupporter, and lastly he is making apolitical fight in the interest of theWaterhouse family. Just what nationalpurpose is to be served by having theinterests of the Waterhouse family rep-sent- ei

in the Legislature it would take awrit of discovery to find out. By way ofenlightening the public and informingvoters, therefore, he should be more ex-

plicit. Mr. Henry Waterhouse is still tobe heard from.

There is hope for the Kingdom yet.During the heat and turmoil of anelection contest, our contemporary, the"Bulletin," finds space for two columnsof original matter on Apostolic succes-sion, and may soon be expected to takeup the vexed question of Constantine'sbaptism.

To what desperate straits the Inde-pendent Opposition is driven when it re-

sorts to the futile and absurd trick ofthreatening foreign intervention shouldnative Hawaiians, enrolled as soldiers, exercise their right of voting the Nationalticket at the coming election. The arti-

cle to which we refer appeared in lastevening's "Bulletin," headed "A Das-

tardly Attempt." We would not havenoticed this fanfaronade of nonsensewere it not tliat it professes to have beenwritten under official inspiration. Inother words, it is intimated that thediplomatic representatives of the UnitedStates, England and France had in-

formed the writer "that the presenttrend of the Hawaiian Government isnot wholly escaping the official cogni-

zance of the great Powers named," andthat unless the Opposition candidatesare elected for Honolulu the Powerswould withdraw their recognition andthe independence of the Kingdom bewrecked. Now, we don't believe a wordof it ; and we think our contemporaryowes an apology to Minister Merrill andthe Commissioners of France and Eng-land for dragging them into our localpolitics. These gentlemen are far tooexperienced to meddle with matterswhich do not concern them.

phatically declared in his message. Thatall the available strength of the SouthernSenators and planters will be brought tobear towards abrogating the Treaty atthis session of Congress no one doubts.Hence is it wise, to say the least, in ourmerchants who ship sugar to San Fran-cisco, to continue to do so in foreign ves-

"Is there danger ahead?" a corre-bponde- nt

asks in to-day- 's Advertiser, ashe points to the pregnant fact that Hono-lulu shippers and importers, exclusivelyof the Independent Opposition persua-sion, are discriminating in their businessagainst American vessels. Yet these verymen are taking advantage of the partial-ity of the United States Congress andAmerican people in the matter of thetariff to sell their sugar at the highestpossible price without paying duty. Ifthe facts stated by "Friend of theTreaty" in to-day- 's paper be reported toCongress, or becomes public in the Amer-ican press, "good bye" to the Treaty.

This 'suicidal policy is part of the fightagainst the Spreckels' interest. It mayend in burning their own fingers very se-

verely, but it would also hurt innocentpeople who liave no share in thismovement and who do not sympathizewith - it. If the punishment wouldonly be confined to the offenders onecould view it complacently, but when itmust fall upon all alike we enter a de-

cided protest. Not that we imagine for amoment anything we may say on thesubject will have the slightest effect uponthe result. The planters who are sub-scribing money liberally to elect the Op-

position candidates, and who are buying(or permitting to be bought) tax receiptswith a view to controlling the election, may soon have reason to regret their con-duct. But their repentance may comewhen it is too late.

Mr. Fred H. Hayselden is on the Na-

tional ticket, and is therefore a targetfor Opposition archers. But inasmuchas there is nothing to be alleged againsthim truthfully, the "party of moralideas" does not scruple to invent chargesof political and moral wrong doing toprejudice him with the voters. Amongthe clean-cu- t lies which these professorsof cant and hypocrisy have invented regarding him, is that he has possession ofthe tax receipts of the Queen's Own, andthat he refused to surrender the receiptsof two of this corps when asked forthem. This statement having been published in the "tramp" organ, togetherwith a great deal of goody-good-y twad-dle, to give a kind of pious edge to it,Mr. Hayselden requests us to deny it intoto.

He says : "I have not in my possessiona single tax receipt of the Queen's Ownor any other company of" volunteersoldiers, these receipts having beenplaced, at the time of their issue, in thehinds authorized to distribute them. The story about two volunteer soldiershaving applied to me for their tax jre-crip- ts,

and that I said ' they would begiven to them the day before election, isalso not true." Mr. Hayselden. mighthave spared himself the trouble of a de-

nial, because nobody believes the storiesprinted in the Opposition press regard-ing the Government or the Nationalcandidates. Their columns are at thedisposal of the mendacious coterie whohave for so long tyrannized over this com-

munity, .but whose reign, happily fortruth and righteousness, is now ended.

Mr. J. O. Carter is out. in a letter tothe "Bulletin" explaining his formerletter and charging us with unfair treat-ment. We deny that we treated him atall unfairly. On the contrary, we hadia mind the advice of the immortalIzaak Walton to anglers', to handle theirfly tenderly as if tliey loved it. Wereally and truly dealt tenderly with Mr.Carter, and refrained from saying or sug-

gesting anything that might offend himor hurt the most sensitive feelings. Butthis gentleman being so entirely andegregiously wrong, should admit the factmanfully and make no wry faces aboutit. How were we to know that he meant6 per cents when he wrote 7 per cents, more especially as the correction towhich he alludes was no correction at all.Bat the point of the 6 per cent bondswas dealt with by us upon its own merits, and it really had nothing to do with Mr.Carter's argument, which was that theGovernment was not to be trusted to paytheir bonds at maturity, because it hadillegally continued a considerable sum of9 per cents, when it might have soldother bonds it does not matter whether7 or 6 per cents to redeem them.

We demonstrated that the continuancewas by consent of the holder of thebonds, and that the transaction wasmade by virtue of a provision of the Actunder which they were issued, whichstates that the bonds are payable at thedate expressed on their face or at aperiod not exceeding twenty years fromdate of issuance. We said thatwe would not discuss the legalpoint involved in the continuance, nor sliall we do so beyond the remarkthat it appears to us to depend entirelyupon the lender and borrower whethersuch bonds shall be continued within thetwenty-yea- r limit or not. Both partiesbeing agreed, the law appears to author-ize a continuance of short dated bonds. In no case, however, does the transac-tion warrant the injurious conclusionwhich Mr. Carter drew from it, and itwas to this we mainly objected.

Furthermore, Mr. Carter fails to per-ceive that his own statement of the caseis the strongest proof of the sound creditof the Government. If he is correct, theJames Robinson estate has no securityfor its loan of $50,000 except the goodfaith of the Government; but thelawyers, who doubtless were consultedin this transaction by the Trustees, did

As pneumonia is essentially a congestive disease, the best preventivemeasures are those which avoid thecauses of congestion. Pulmonary congestion is favored by too heavy cloth-in- s

worn in winter weather. A seriouserror is the supposition that a doubleset of flannels worn next the skin affords double protection, me tact isthat in such a case the inner flannel absorbs all secretion and perspiration, which are there retained by the outerflannel. An almost poultice like actionis thus brought about, softening theskin and rendering it highly susceptibleto the slightest exposure.

Over-heate- d, rooms, andthe sudden transition from these to thesharp outer air, are other avoidable predisposing causes of the disease. Hewho uses a cold sponge bath w ith briskrubbing every morning, who wears the

THE LATEST AMERICAN INVENTION.a

THE VICTORY OF ElaECTIlICITir.Since Electricity has been applied for lighting purposes, nil efforts of inventors have

been directed to construct a lamp for general domestic use. The reason why this prob-lem has till now not been solved, is that none of the inventors could rid themselves of theidea of gas lighting, and that all have adhered to the system of producing the electricityin some central place, or by large machinery, instead of first laying down the principlethat a lamp which should ever become generally useful and popular, must be portablelike an oil lamp, and contain the generator of electricity in itself, i. ., in the foot of thelamp.

The Norman Electric Light Company has at last succeeded in completely realizingthis ideal of electric lighting, and there ia no doubt that this most important inventionwill bring about a complete revolution in all branches of lighting.

Our Electrio Lamp needs neither machinery, conductors, nor any expensive outlay, and is neither complicated or dinasreeable in manipulation; all that is necessary is torefill it every four of five days with acid. The cost of lighting will be as cheap as gas (cents per hour), and it has before the latter the immense advantage of neither producingheat, smoke nor carbonic acid, owing to which the air is not impured. and remains at thesame degree of temperature. It is further, absolutely inodorous, and does not need to bekindled by match or otherwise, but simply by turning the key, thus avoiding all danger offire, explosion or suffocation, as in the case of gas, if tbe key is left open; and it must be con-ceded that this advantage alone is invaluable. It is further preferable te any known kindof lighting for the following reasons:

1. Its manipulation is so simple that any child can keep it In order.2. That the lamp is portable, and can be removed like any oil lamp, from one nlaeeto another: .

3. That it neither requires the disagreeable fixing of the wick, or the cleaning of thecylinder, as in the case of oil lamps.4. That the light produced is a soft and most steady one; that it- - never lickers, andthe flame, though being equal in power of lighting to gas, can be regulated to any degree5. That every danger of fire is absolutely excluded, as the light will extinguish im-

mediately, if by any accident the glass surrounding the burner should be broken.6. That it will burn, even in the strongest wind, completely unaffected, thus beinginvaluable for illuminations, lighting of gardens, corridors, etc. This lamp is constructed for the present in three different sizes;A, small size. Height of complete lamp, 14 inches; weight, about 5 pounds; for lighing rooms, cellars, storage houses, powder magazines (or similar places wbers explosiveare kept), coaches, illuminations, gardens, mines or auy other industrial purpose. M!03STDk.Y, Janaai?v Q5th,--A.t 12 o'clock !N"oon,Unless previously disposed of by privats sale.

The whole of tbat valuable city property known as tbe BOOTH ESTATE,excepting only tbe corner lot, owned by Mr. James Olds, containing in all20,990 square feet, together with bouses, stores and buildings thereto be-

longing.

This is the moat compact aud desirable piece of property evrr offeredfor sale in Honolulu. Its main frontages are IS feet 5 inches to Nuuanustreet, and 93 feet 6 inches to Hotel street. The rear front of the propertyextends from Nuuanu street, back of Messrs. Castle Jt Cooke's fine brickwarehouse and store, 172 feet 11 inches to Rose Lane, the side frontagealong the line of the Robinson lot to Hotel street being 142 feet 3 inches.

The value of this and the adjoining property might be greatly en-

hanced by carrying Rose Lane straight through to notel street. Accessis had to Hotel and Nuuanu streets from the rear and center of the estateby lanes long in use on the property itself.

Situated in the heart of the retail business quarter of the city, andhaving a large area of available building space unoccupied, this propertyholds out unusual inducements to capitalists as a permanent investment.Tbe present annual income is $1,500, or 10 per cent on $45,000 ; Cut asthe leases expire shortly, the rental might be increased to $6,000 a yearwithout expenditure for repairs or additions to buildings. If the estatewere sold as whole, however, by judicious and inexpensive improve, rueuts which a practical eye would suggost, even this large prospectiveincome might be very considerably added to. '

The Nuuanu street frontage is occupied by a row of two-stor- y build-ings, the upper story being used as dwellings, and the first floor as stores, which are always in occupation. Restaurants and retail stores similarlyoccupy the frontage on Hotel street. ...

The old International Hotel is in the center of the property, and oeswith the lot. It is used as a lodging bouse and pays handsomely.

Another advantage of this tine property as an investment is its excel-

lent sanitary conditions. It is on the highest part of the city makai of '

B tetania street, and is therefore easily drained. The property, if not disposed of before date of sale, will be first put

up as a whole in one lot. Failing a satisfactory purchaser, we shall thenput it up in lots, for which purpose it has been subdivided into sixteenlots. We shall offer these lots at tbe following upset prices, viz.;

Lot No. 1 ,1.R00Lot No. 2 1,800Lot No. 3 J,XLot No. 4 1,000Lot No. 5 1,500Lot No. 6. . 1,500Lot No. 7 8,500.,Lot No. 8.... 1.500Lot No. 9 1,500Lot No. 10 3,750Lot No. U , 3,750

And upon the following favorable terms :

ONE THIRD CASH.Balance in one, two and three years, with interest at 7 per cent per

annum, secured by mortgage. We solicit an examination of this property, and confidently recom-

mend the investment as a permanent paying one, with greater contingen-cies for advancement than almost any other kind of property,
