Principal's Message

Welcome To Term 3

Welcome back to term 3 and a special welcome to the number of new families that have joined our great school. Term 3 looks to be another busy and exciting one for our school community with events such as the AFLQ Cup, the Year 5 Camp and the Canberra Trip.

Canberra Trip

Our Year 6 students leave for Canberra early on Sunday Morning. They fly to Sydney, where they take the ferry into Sydney Harbour and visit the rocks area before bussing it to Canberra. The students will visit many sights in Canberra including both old and new Parliament House, the Governor’s House, AIS, Museum, Questacon, the Mint, the War Memorial and Mt Ainslie. They will also spend a day at the snow with the chance of tobogganing if there is enough snow, which based on recent weather will be a near certainty. We wish them well as they travel with Mrs Courcoulos, Mr Kibbey, Miss Fritsche, Ms Hutchinson, Mrs Gardiner and Mrs Mackay.

During July/August, Education Queensland conducts the Annual School Opinion Surveys. This year all families will be given the opportunity to participate in the surveys as well as random senior students and staff. Thank you to those families who will complete the Annual School Opinion Surveys. The surveys provide valuable information to Education Queensland and to the schools to assist with future planning of facilities, equipment and school programs. All surveys are being completed on-line again this year and I ask you to take the short amount of time to provide us with your feedback.

Dangers of Social Media

A reminder to students about the risks of being on social media. In the first instance, the legal age to be on most social media platforms is at least 13 years of age. So primary school students should not really be on these platforms. Where students are, parents are reminded to check that their account has the necessary controls activated to avoid unwanted attention by internet predators. The “Tick Tock” platform has recently featured in the media due to internet predators trying to groom young children through this media. Students should not give out information such as full names, addresses, phone numbers, school and so forth, which will enable them to be tracked and targeted.

Secondly, please be aware of the You Tube influencers that are encouraging students to undertake all sorts of dangerous and inappropriate activities. This week we had two students “prank” their teacher in a very inappropriate manner without the knowledge of their parents. Please be aware of these dangers and take the necessary precautions.

AFLQ Cup

On the 7 August, our senior boys AFL team will compete in the Quarter Finals of the AFL QCup competition against teams from Gold Coast South, Logan, and Brisbane South. Should they win this part of the competition, they will travel to the Sunshine Coast for the semi-finals and final. We wish Mrs Gislingham, Mr Lee and the boys every success. I know that they will be out their trying their very best and that is all we can ask of them.

Prep Enrolments for 2020

Enrolments for the 2020 Preparatory Year will now be taken for eligible children; that is, children born in the period 01 July 2014 to 30 June 2015. Enrolment Packs are available for collection from the school office. The enrolment process will include:

Completion of the enrolment form by a parent

Submission of the enrolment form with attached copy of a birth certificate or equivalent (mandatory before enrolment will be accepted)

An interview with the Principal or Deputy Principal

Please notify neighbours who may not yet have direct contact with Gaven State School of this information, if they have a child who will be eligible to enrol in 2020.

NB The school has an enrolment management plan so you need to be in catchment to enrol, unless an application is made with supporting reasons for an out of catchment enrolment.

Principal Tours

Each Tuesday at 12.00, our school principal or representative will conduct tours of the school for parents of students who will be enrolling in our school or who are interested in enrolling in the school. If you or someone you know is interested in attending Gaven State School, please have them make an appointment with the school office on 5514 7333 to join one of these tours.

We Learn for Life in State Primary Schools

State primary schools across Queensland whose leaders are members of the Queensland Association of State School Principals, are this week displaying on their school signs the message: "We Learn For Life in State Primary Schools".

Page 4: I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners and ... · Please notify neighbours who may not yet have direct contact with Gaven State School of this information, if they have

We want to draw attention to the high-quality education state primary schools deliver for all our students, as well as recognise the importance of the primary years of education.

Our capacity to provide a high quality of life for all in the 21st century hinges on an education system that equips young people with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values to take advantage of the opportunities and to face the challenges ahead with confidence.

Schools play a vital role in promoting the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral, spiritual and aesthetic development and wellbeing of young Australians. In our state primary school classrooms and playgrounds the foundations are laid for our children to develop into successful, confident and creative individuals and in turn active and informed citizens.

Yet in Australia the primary years, in particular Years 3 to 6, remain the lowest funded per capita of all compulsory year levels. Our state schools cater for the overwhelming majority of children with disabilities and with significant learning needs. A funding model based on the specific learning needs of the students in each school would more fully support the learning of all our students.

The staff, teachers and leaders of our state primary schools across Queensland are proud to give our students the best possible start so that they can live fulfilling, productive and responsible lives, in a world which is rapidly and continually changing.

District Athletics 2019

The Broadwater Athletics Championships was held over two days, the 17th and 18th of July. Eleven students from Gaven State School qualified for the 10-12 year old event. There were some great performances in what is a very difficult event. Three students were successful in making the Broadwater Athletics team to compete at the Regional Championships. Those students were 10 year old Jayden and 12 year olds Levi and Ethan. The following is a list of students who managed top ten results at the carnival.

My thanks to Fiona Hazeltine for her help over the 2 days.

The Pyjama Foundation.

We are a locally based volunteer organisation that supports children in the foster care system.

All funds raised from the evening will go directly towards the recruitment, training and mentoring of volunteers to spend time with kids in care, ultimately changing the direction of their lives.

The Pyjama Party at Movie World will be held on Friday 16th August. Everyone's favourite rides and attractions will be available on the evening with live entertainment including a DJ, face painting, prizes, great food and more. I’m asking you to consider joining us.

Please help us support many more children in care by spreading the word about our event with your students and faculty. If you are interested we have flyers available to distribute.

Without the support of people like you, we would cease to exist. And without this support, children in foster care would not be able to receive the educational and emotional support that our mentoring program offers.

For more information about the Pyjama Party or to purchase tickets please jump onto www.movieworld.com.au/seasonal-events/pyjama-party

Medication at School

Does your child require medication during school hours?

If your child requires medication while at school, please ensure you request an Administration of medication record sheet from your school’s office.

You will also need to provide the school with the prescription-labelled medication in the original packaging with clear directions for its use.

SHOUT OUT ! A big shout out to Julie and Janine who are driving the fundraising for having our whole school air-conditioned this year. It’s so wonderful to see the whole school with all our families getting behind this project and working so hard to see the dream realised. If you are interested in attending an evening or day time session of PPP Positive Parenting this year it is important that you register your interest with Chappy by sending an email to [email protected] . We need to see how many are interested to see if we go ahead for future sessions, especially an evening session.

What is Triple P/ Positive Parenting Program? "The Triple P program is not telling us how to be a parent; it’s giving us the tools to be better at it." Louise, mum of two. Kids don’t come with an instruction manual. Whether you’re a mum, dad, single parent family, step parenting or a carer – the Triple P positive parenting program can help you with a specific problem, or provide tips on parenting and help with understanding your child’s development and behaviour. The Triple P positive parenting program is for parents with children aged 3–8 years. The program gives you the tools to: • encourage behaviour you like from your child • deal positively and consistently with problem behaviour • take the stress out of parenting. Triple P can also help to develop family relationships assisting children to reach their full potential. Developed by the University of Queensland Parent and Family Support Centre, Triple P parent groups have helped families in Australia and throughout the world for more than 30 years. How does the Triple P program work? Seminars are the ideal introduction to Triple P. They consist of three 90 minute sessions that will leave you feeling more confident and ready to deal with common childhood behavioural issues. These are stand alone seminars so you can choose to come to one or all three. “The Power of Positive Parenting,"Raising Confident, Competent Children" - and "Raising Confident children "- To register you must go to the Triple P website...http://www.triplep-parenting.net.au/qld-uken/home/

ANTI-BULLYING STRATEGIES AT HOME:

https://health.usnews.com/wellness/for-parents/articles/2017-10-27/how-parents-can-help-prevent-bullying

As a parent, you may have an understanding of bullying either directly or indirectly from your childhood. Bullying is defined as intentional and repeated aggression toward another person that causes injury or discomfort. Bullying exists in many forms, including physical aggression, name-calling and spreading rumors.

Differences in bullying exist across genders. Studies show girls often engage in more relational bullying, like spreading rumors to harm a peer’s reputation, while boys tend to engage in more aggressive bullying, such as threatening or hitting peers.

How Bullying Effects Children’s Emotions

According to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 70 percent of youth report witnessing bullying at school. This is a serious concern given the impact of bullying. Decades of research have identified the psychological effects of bullying on children. For example, children who engage in bullying and those who are also victims of bullying tend to report higher levels of depression and anxiety.

Page 9: I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners and ... · Please notify neighbours who may not yet have direct contact with Gaven State School of this information, if they have

In a study published last year in the Journal of Black Psychology, researchers examined the emotional consequences of bullying among African-American children. The findings indicated that both those who bullied others and victims of bullying reported higher levels of depressed mood and anxiety symptoms. Additionally, the study found that African-American children who reported engaging in bullying often reported having more difficulties managing their own emotions. This study highlights decades of research on bullying with results replicating studies on children from all ethnic groups.

What Parents Can Do to Prevent Bullying

There are prevention programs and school-based interventions to address bullying behaviors and the emotional consequences. However, parents can play an important role in bullying prevention. Here are some suggestions from the American Psychological Association for helping children who engage in bullying and those who are victims of it:

Tips for parents of kids who bully:

Stop bullying before it starts. Talk with your children about bullying. It’s important to identify what behaviors can be involved. Also, remind your child that bullying could lead to other negative consequences like being kicked out of school.

Make your home a “bully-free" zone. Don’t allow bullying to happen in your home. Children learn acceptable behaviors from their parents. It’s important to model “good” examples of negotiating social relationships. Exposing children to overly strict home environments may put them at a higher risk of engaging in bullying.

Look for emotional or behavior changes. Children who bully others may be dealing with low self-esteem, academic issues or being a victim of bullying. If you notice major changes in your child, take extra precautions to monitor their behavior. This may include talking with a teacher to ask how things going for the child in school.

Tips for parents of kids who are being bullied:

Watch for signs your child is being bullied. Some kids may not report bullying to parents or other adults. Potential signs of bullying may include hesitation about going to school, increased or decreased appetite, nightmares, general worrying or sadness. If you recognize signs of bullying, avoid telling your child to “suck it up.” Let them know you’re there to support them and, if appropriate, seek professional help.

Teach your child how to handle being bullied. Discuss ways to cope with bullying, since adults and teachers are not always present to prevent children from being bullied. At home, model ways to ignore bullying with your child and teach them how to be more assertive. It’s also important to help your child identify teachers and friends who can help them.

Appropriately monitor social media and computer use. Become educated and educate your child about cyberbullying. Teach your child to ignore threatening messages and to not share threatening emails with others. Most children have access to cellphones or other electronic devices, so it’s important to discuss limiting the use of technology and the consequences if used inappropriately. If you notice bullying, be sure to report threats to the school and, when appropriate, to the police.

What is a Chappy and what do they do in our school?

I work with and complement existing support services such as our guidance officer and special education unit etc. I also hold a unique position in our wider school community through extending confidential counselling, care and support for not only students but staff and parents. Personal difficulties may affect a students academic performance and as a chaplain / youth/ welfare worker, I can provide them with a positive and encouraging support alternative. But basically , a school

Page 10: I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners and ... · Please notify neighbours who may not yet have direct contact with Gaven State School of this information, if they have

chaplain is a youth/ welfare worker with the added benefit of having been trained to pastorally care for people in a spiritual sense as well. But only when this has been requested by a parent either for themselves or for their children.

A chaplain's role is varied but revolves around

building positive relationships with students

fostering a supportive and caring school community

working closely with other support staff and services to nurture and care for our students overall but also through one-to-one mentoring

supporting at-risk students through emotional/social behavioural support programs such as Kids with Courage, Rock and Water, Drumbeats, Shedmen and Bella Girls. Also supporting our parents through the PPP Positive Parenting Program.

Supporting staff and families from the wider school community. Eg Christmas hampers, Emergency food parcels, school holiday camp subsidy and connecting families to helpful community services.

Running lunch time activities, brrekky Club and our second hand uniform stall.

GRANDAD’S GARDEN :

You may have seen the garden behind the canteen. We have re-created a garden from a social/emotional book called "I Grow in Grandad’s Garden". If you have not informed the school that your child is absent you will receive a text message. It will read as follows:

Gaven SS records show Joe Smith is absent 23/6/13. Pls reply SMS/MSG student name/absence reason/absence date.

SMS Absence Alerts

Parents/Caregivers are advised that the school will be using Mobile phone Short Message Service (SMS) to send text messages to parents notifying unexplained absence.

Parents will be informed by mobile phone Short Message System (SMS) each time their child is away from school and no explanation of the absence has been provided. At Gaven State School, student attendance is a high priority. We know that students who attend regularly are more likely to be successful. To improve our attendance procedures, we will be informing parents/caregivers about any unexplained absences for their child. The school expects parents/caregiver to contact the school in advance if they know their child is to be absent.

An SMS text message will be automatically sent to the mobile phones of parents explaining that our records show that your child is absent from school. The message will come from the phone number 0418 125 029 and read as follows:

Benefiting You and Your Child

1. You have the right to know that your child is safe.

Page 13: I would like to acknowledge the traditional owners and ... · Please notify neighbours who may not yet have direct contact with Gaven State School of this information, if they have

If your child has not arrived at school, you need to know immediately.

2. Your child deserves the best possible chance of success.

Regular attendance is a key factor in school success.

3. You deserve the most responsive delivery system available.

A text message direct to your mobile phone is fast, effective and discrete. For parents with School Star, message delivery is first attempted as a notification through the app. However, if the in-app message isn’t opened within a few minutes, the system automatically sends an SMS, to ensure that the important message reaches you, no matter what.

1. You must have immediate notification in times of crisis.

There may be times when we will need to reach a large number of parents instantly.

What Parents Must Do

Gaven State School is taking important steps to benefit your child. This is a shared responsibility, and parents must also help the school.

1. Keep your mobile phone details up to date.Make sure we have your current mobile phone number, and notify us immediately if this number changes.

2. Notify the school in advance when your child is absent (Before 9.15am).If you notify us as soon as you know your child will be absent, we will know your child is safe, and will not need to contact you. A School Star text message sent to us is the best way to do this.

3. Respond to messages from the school. If you receive an absence message from us, please respond via School Star or return SMS. We need to know why your child is absent.

4. If you receive a message you believe is an error, please phone the school

For example if you receive a message and your child was dropped off/sent to school

If you don’t have a mobile phone...Details of low-cost phone plans ideal for parents who want to benefit from the new system are available from mobile phone providers. We will maintain our existing contact methods for parents who do not have mobile phones.

Kiss-n-go

Please find attached an information pamphlet which outlines the correct procedures for our Kiss’n’Go Zone.

We would like to thank parents for their patience, support and understanding whilst we establish this very important safety procedure.

NEW PAYMENT METHOD for Payment over the phone with Credit Card.

NEW PAYMENT METHOD for Payment over the phone with Credit Card.

The school office is no longer able to take credit card details over the phone as this is not Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard compliant.

We can now offer parents the ability to pay invoices over the phone using BPoint IVR (Interactive Voice Response).

Parents need to have their invoice ready and then call 1300 631 073 and enter their CRN,amount and credit card details to complete payment.

At the end of the call you will be provided with a unique payment receipt number.

BPoint Instructions

We would like to draw your attention to BPoint, our preferred method of payment. Once you have received an invoice from the school via email you will notice down the bottom the reference to BPoint. BPoint payments are allocated directly to the student and the payment will go towards that specific activity.

Please see the link below for detailed step by step instructions.

Student Arrival Times and Attendance

Student Arrival Times and Attendance

We have been tracking the attendance rate of students and the large volume of students that have been arriving late. Under the Education Act, a child (by law) must attend school each day from start to finish. Exclusion from school during the six hours of learning time, should only be for extenuating circumstances like illness.Having the day off for their birthday orgoing on a family holiday during the school term is not considered an acceptable reason. When these children return from holiday they can experience feelings of anxiety and stress about being ‘behind’ the other students. We acknowledge that sometimes a ‘one-off’ holiday is unavoidable (for many reasons) however, for those families that are doing this on a regular basis, this is impacting upon your child’s learning in more ways than one, as we know every day counts!

What can Parents do to help their children?

Children must attend school every day, and they must attend from the moment the first bell rings until the final bell is rung to dismiss them. Below is a table which outlines just how much schooling a child misses when they arrive late to school. It is quite alarming to see how much just 10 minutes a day can build up.
