“I will never forget the destruction and suffering I have witnessed today. In the past I have witnessed many natural disasters around the world, but nothing like this.”

Ban Ki-MoonUN Secretary-General

The number of people affected by the current floods in Pakistan is greater than that of the 2004 Tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and this year's Haiti earthquake … combined.

Here’s how YOU can help…

20 million people have been affected.

Here’s how YOU can help…

Torrential rains have flooded 1/5th of Pakistan's land mass. Over 2,000 men, women and children have lost their lives.

Villages, farmland and major infrastructure all across the country has been swept away.

Karachi Relief Trust (KRT) is an NGO established in 2005 by a group of civic-minded volunteers who came together with the fundamental belief that each of us can and should make a difference.

With a strong fundraising network in the urban centers, and hundreds of volunteers in the field, KRT is once again active in doing all that is needed in these dire conditions.

The core group of KRT is founded by professionals, businessmen and students from various walks of life who feel that in times of emergency EVERYONE needs to step out of their comfort zone and lend a helping hand.

PAST RELIEF EFFORTS

• Gathered Rs. 100 million in donations.• Volunteers put together survival packets

containing food, basic medicines and other survival supplies and distributed these to 2,500 families in Baluchistan and Sindh.

• Reconstruction work…

2008 QUETTA EARTHQUAKE

• Karachi Relief was mobilized to build temporary shelters for quake victims.

2009 IDP’S OF SWABI

• Food, water and shelter provided to the Internally Displaced People of Swabi and Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa.

THE WATERCRISIS

With over 1.1 billion people deprived of safe drinking water worldwide this issue has worsened in the flood-affected regions of Pakistan

Of the 20 million flood affectees, 3.5 million children are at high risk from deadly water-borne diseases (UN OCHA)

Millions of people are internally displaced; living in makeshift camps in schools, mosques and on the roadside

Thousands of cases of Diarrhoea and other water borne diseases (like Cholera) are already being reported

The Pak Pani Project KRT is running a project by the name of Pak Pani which aims to meet the drinking water needs of over 2 million families effected by the floods. Our efforts include provision of both short term and long term drinking water solutions.

Pak Pani team has already started meeting daily water needs of over 5,000 people from various camps based in Mooro, Thul, Shikarpur and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa areas through Pur water purifiers and bottled mineral water.

The Pak Pani Project Our project focuses on funding and deploying EPA certified LifeStraw Family Instant Microbial Water Purifiers that are >99.9% effective at removing viruses, bacteria and parasites) to all flood affected regions.

Each unit costs just $30 and our project partners have pledged to match in donation the number of purifiers that we can purchase. We trust these purifiers as a long term answer to the drinking water needs in flood affected areas.

Why LifeStraw Family? With several clean water intervention solutions available, we believe in the short term emergency and in the long-term rehabilitation phase, LifeStraw Family (LSF) can fulfill the needs of the affected in the most effective way.

Performance: The 0.02 micron membrane filter physically removes 99.9999% of bacteria, 99.99% of viruses and 99.9% of parasites*

Ease of Use: The LSF unit requires no electricity, and

does not require repeat intervention like boiling, re-filtering murky water or mixing tablets everyday

Cost: At just 13.9 paisas ($0.15 cents) per liter, LSF is one of the cheapest water solutions available

Acceptability: The water produced by LSF is safe, clean & clear, with no chemical taste – especially important for children who are at most risk of dehydration

Sustainability: Every unit is guaranteed to produce a minimum of 18,000 liters of water. This means a family of 6 can get clean drinking water for 3 years

* Unlike Chlorine-based water purification tablets, it’s also effective against cryptosporidium, a parasite found in animal faeces

KRT Pak Pani aims to deploy 50,000 LSF purifiers to provide up to 10 million liters of safe drinking water per day in relief camps and flood affected areas in the coming weeks.
