Oh come, let us worship and bow down;let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! —Psalm 95:6

No matter who you are—a committed follower of Jesus, a person curious about Christianity, or a skeptic of spirituality—God is calling you to worship him. Wherever you are on the journey, we hope that you feel welcomed and at home. Perhaps you have never been to church (or not in a long time) and fear that you will not know what to do, how to act, or what to say. Be assured: God’s grace is for people just like you.

In our congregation, we follow an ancient liturgical pattern in our worship, drawing from the wisdom of Christians who have gone before us. Every Sunday we renew our commitment to God, offer him our prayers and gifts, confess our sins, receive forgiveness, hear from God’s word, and celebrate the Lord’s Supper together.

We find worshipping this way liberates us from our culture's obsession with that which is novel. We have also found worshipping this way to be deeply and profoundly formative over time. If you are not used to worship, or not used to worshipping in this manner, give yourself some time to get acclimated. We also make every effort to explain things as we go along.

Although we are committed to worshiping in this manner, we realize that the danger of liturgical worship is that it can become an empty ritual. We understand that, at its heart, worship is profoundly relational. It encompasses both our relationship with God and our relationship with one another. Every week we gather to meet with God, strengthen our ties to one another, and welcome strangers into our congregation.

For these reasons, although our worship is structured and informed by ancient practices, we also strive for it to be warm and personal.

In all of this, our great confidence is that God enjoys meeting with us.

Let us worship!

Without the Good Shepherd, we are alone in a meaningless story. Weariness and fear leave us feeling overwhelmed, unable to move. Cynicism leaves us doubting, unable to dream. The combination shuts down our hearts, and we just show up for life, going through the motions. Paul Miller, A Praying Life: Connecting with God in a Distracting World

My biggest lesson from being a military brat and wife: You cannot count on the next place/position/assignment being the one that makes you happy and this one is just a stopover. You unpack your boxes, call it home, make friends, and do your best. Kate Shellnutt

It looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue. Airplane

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. God (Joshua 1:8)

Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

Almighty God,      whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ      ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that,      according to his promise,      he abides with his Church on earth,      even to the end of the ages;      through Jesus Christ our Lord,      who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,      one God, in glory everlasting. “Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

This is the Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God!

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

C O N F E S S I O N O F S I N From The Worship Sourcebook

While we claim to celebrate the ascension of our Lord, the way we live proclaims our lack of faith in his power to deal with the world. Let us pray and confess the incongruity between our faith and practice:   Almighty God,      you have raised Jesus from death to life      and crowned him Lord of all. We confess that we have not bowed before him      or acknowledged his rule in our lives. We have gone along with the ways of the world      and failed to give him glory. Forgive us      and raise us from sin,      that we may be your faithful people,      obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ,      who rules the world      and is head of the church, his body. Amen.

(You are invited to confess your sins silently.)

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E based on Ephesians 2:4-7

Hear the good news of the gospel:      God, who is rich in mercy,      out of the great love with which he loved us      even when we were dead through our trespasses,      made us alive together with Christ—      by grace you have been saved—      and raised us up with him and seated us with him      in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,      so that in the ages to come he might show      the immeasurable riches of his grace      in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. In Christ, by God’s grace, we are saved. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow!   May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 47

Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth. He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet. He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm!

God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne. The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted!

7

J o y f u l J o y f u l W e A d o r e T h e e

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays,Stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee.

Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.

P A S S I N G T H E P E A C E As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you."

Sermons can be streamed and downloaded at graceseattle.org/resources. Grace Kids ages Kindergarten to 2nd grade meets in downstairs in Room #102 during the sermon.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

We saw his light break through the cloud of glory Whilst we were rooted still in time and place As earth became a part of Heaven’s story And heaven opened to his human face. We saw him go and yet we were not parted He took us with him to the heart of things The heart that broke for all the broken-hearted Is whole and Heaven-centred now, and sings, Sings in the strength that rises out of weakness, Sings through the clouds that veil him from our sight, Whilst we our selves become his clouds of witness And sing the waning darkness into light, His light in us, and ours in him concealed, Which all creation waits to see revealed.

M U S I C A L O F F E R I N G A n d I s H e R e m o v e d ? Lyrics provided below for reflection.

And is he removed Our Master belov’d, Our heavenly Lord, Is Jesus again to his heaven restored? He is gone, he is gone To his dearly-bought throne; Vanished out of our sight To his mansion of pure inaccessible light. Yet still we all share His happiness there, The valley pass through, And our Lord to his heaven of heavens pursue, In assurance of hope The members mount up, Where Jesus hath led We follow, and reign with our glorified head.

Our heart is above, Our treasure and love Laid up in the sky, And thither in all our affections we fly: No longer inclined To the flesh-pots behind, The world we forego, Not a wish, or a passion shall wander below. Our spirit is flown To Jesus’s throne, Our bodies are here, But wait when our Lord in the clouds shall appear. In the clouds he shall come And take his bride home, To his banquet above, To his heavenly fulness of glory and love.

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line.

Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

YCG Youth Night Fourth Sunday of Each MonthGrace has just kicked off a new tradition centered around our middle and high school age youth. The fourth Sunday of every month our teens and YCG leaders will gather for a time of food, games and fellowship from 4-6pm (with the exception of 4/28, due to the YCG Retreat 4/26-2/28).  Our hope is to build a stronger community amongst our young people at Grace, so a substantive amount of time will revolve around table fellowship, prayer, and games.  We are still shaping the schedule for the year, so input from youth and parents are welcome!  If you have any questions, please send an email to Pastor Jason, at [email protected].

Community groups are places of care and community where we learn more about living the Christian life together. Each group is unique and has its own "personality," and yet all groups are focused on growing in relationship with God and with each other. Groups meet on different nights in various neighborhoods around the city, and include time for fellowship, study and reflection, and prayer together. If you have any questions about community groups, contact Debbie (Smith) Tacke at [email protected].

Adult Christian Formation June 9  R.E.S.T. (Real Escape from the Sex Trade) In our last session of our class on authority, vulnerability, and relationships, we are privileged to have with us Amanda Hightower, who is the Executive Director of R.E.S.T., whose stated mission is "To provide pathways to freedom, safety, and hope for victims of sex trafficking and people involved in the sex trade." Volunteer Appreciation Day June 23rd 11:30 AM Fellowship Hall Save the date! We will be having our annual Volunteer Appreciation Day on Sunday, June 23rd. We will provide food and drinks, so please plan on joining us in the downstairs Fellowship Hall (and on the outside patio, if weather allows) to celebrate all you do for our church family. We will have Grace Seattle t-shirts available for all volunteers to take home.

Volunteers Needed for Grace Kids Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Please help us make Grace a place where all children are welcomed, known, and loved. We are currently in need in the following areas during the service:

• Toddlers: 2 volunteers needed • PreK: 3 volunteers needed

Please prayerfully consider serving in a vital component of Christ’s ministry here at Grace (Matt 19:14)! If you have any questions, or would like to start the application process for serving with Grace Kids, please contact Nicole Herring at [email protected]

Sermon Time Lesson & Activity, K-2nd Grade Parents and Grace Kids volunteers have started a sermon time activity for children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade.  Our hope is to have a time during the sermon for some of our youngest members and guests to hear an age-appropriate, Christ-centered lesson every week.

For the rest of the Spring, we are using Sally Lloyd-Jones' "Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing", having a short time for crafts and singing songs together.  If you would like your little one to participate, we will dismiss the class after the "Passing of the Peace", portion of the service, directing the kids to follow the main teacher for the week, (which will be a rotation of  Katie Truelove, Nicole Rule, or Pastor Jason standing at the back of the sanctuary).  The lesson will conclude during the offering time, at which time the students will rejoin parents for Communion.

If you have any questions, or would like to join our team of rotating teachers, please email Katie Truelove at [email protected].

Save the Date: All Church Retreat 2019 September 27-29th Warm Beach Camp & Conference Center Save the date! We will be having a church-wide retreat at the Warm Beach Camp in Stanwood. This is a great time to build existing relationships and form new ones. For more information about the retreat, please email Danielle at [email protected]. More details to follow in 2019.

Numbers 13:1-14:10

[13:1] The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, [2] “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the people of Israel. From each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a chief among them.”  [3] So Moses sent them from  the wilderness of Paran, according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the people of Israel. [4] And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;  [5]  from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;  [6]  from the tribe of Judah,  Caleb the son of Jephunneh;  [7]  from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;  [8]  from the tribe of Ephraim,  Hoshea the son of Nun;  [9]  from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;  [10]  from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;  [11]  from the tribe of Joseph (that is, from the tribe of Manasseh), Gaddi the son of Susi;  [12]  from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;  [13]  from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; [14] from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;  [15]  from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. [16] These were the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.

[17] Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up into  the Negeb and go up into  the hill country,  [18] and see what the land is, and whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many, [19] and whether the land that they dwell in is good or bad, and whether the cit ies that they dwell in are camps or strongholds,  [20]  and whether the land is  rich or poor, and whether there are trees in it or not. Be of good courage and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes. [21] So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, near Lebo-hamath.  [22] They went up into  the Negeb and came to  Hebron.  Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the  descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)  [23] And  they came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut down from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and they carried it on a pole between two of them; they also brought some pomegranates and figs. [24] That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster that the people of Israel cut down from there.

[25] At the end of forty days they returned from spying out the land.  [26]  And they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the people of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at  Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.  [27] And they told him, “We came to the land to which you sent us. It flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. [28] However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. [29] The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”

[30] But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.”  [31] Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” [32] So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and  all the people that we saw in it are of great height.  [33] And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves  like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

[14:1]  Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. [2] And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!  [3] Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” [4] And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

[5]  Then  Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.  [6]  And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes  [7]  and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel,  “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. [8] If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. [9] Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for  they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the  Lord  is with us; do not fear them.”  [10]  Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the Lord appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.
