Provost S.D. Sahlstrom Resigns

Don Sargeant Named Chancellor

Stanley D. Sahlstrom

Stanley D. Sahlstrom, "founding father" of UMC,resigned from the provost position when he waselected to the University of Minnesota Board ofRegents in April. He had resigned in October, 1984effective June 30, 1985, but due to his election to theBoard of Regents he resigned early. Sahlstrom wasappointed provost in 1965 with the task of changingthe Northwest School of Agriculture into a two yearcollege. He was responsible for supervising thedevelopment of all new college programs, hiringfaculty, and supervising the remodeling and buildingof facilities for these programs before the doorsopened to 187 freshmen in 1966. There were over1200 students enrolled in 1984-85. Sahlstromreceived his B.S. (with distinction), M.S. and Ph Dfrom the University of Minnesota.

Donald G. Sargeant

Dohald G. Sargeant was named interm provostwhen Sahlstrom resigned. He was named provost onMay 10 for about two hours before the official titlefor chief executive officers of the coordinatecampuses of the University of Minnesota waschanged to chancellor. Chancellor Sargeant has beenin administration at UMC for the past 15 years. Hejoined the faculty in 1970 as chairman of theagriculture division. In 1973 he was appointedAssistant Provost of Academic Affairs, a positionhe held until he was named chancellor. He receivedhis bachelors and masters degrees from theUniversity of Illinois, and his Ph D fromPennsylvania State University.
