I have demonstrated skills in community outreach and engagement, which is crucial for any advisory committee. The ability to engage other citizens in the ecology and environment of London, as well as gather a wide variety of opinions on decisions that must be made would furtber enhance the functioning of the committee. Furthermore, I am a generalist; therefore, I do not have specific knowledge in each of the fields that the committee advises on, but as a recent graduate of a multi-disciplinary Masters degree I have general knowledge o f most areas of environmental concern.

Interest reason: I am interested in serving the City of London because as a recent graduate from UWO, I hope to settle in London for the long term. Because of my interest in staying in London, I

Page 9: I TO: CHAIR AND MEMBERS BOARD OF CONTROL MEETlNG ON ...council.london.ca/CouncilArchives/Agendas/Board Of... · 11/18/2009  · Environmental and Ecological Planning Advisory Committee

would like to actively contribute to the City remaining a vibrant community that focusses on the economy, society and the environment equally. I think that it is important for the City to engage young people in the decision making process, and for that reason I would like to serve on thii planning committee. I truly believe that London offers one of the highest qualities of life for young people in Canada, and I would like to contribute to the City's continued growth and positive development. Contributions: I think that I can contribute a fresh perspective to this committee. It is extremely important that more people in the 35 and under segment of the population become actively involved in the City, and I think that I can contribute to this. Furthermore, as a generalist, I think that I can offer a well developed and considerate opinion on issues that are presented to the committee; specialists are crucial to making sound decisions, but it is also important to have a committee balanced with people equipped with knowledge to make big picture observations. Past contributions: My application to serve on the Environmental and Ecological Planning Advisory Committee is my first attempt to become more invoked in an advisory committee. However, as a high school aged youth I sat on the Board of Education as a Student Advisor for the Huron Perth Catholic District School Board. My position on this Board was to advocate for student interests. Interpenonak My education and professional experience have both been based on a philosophy of teamwork. The Masters of Environment and Sustainability at UWO is based on a teamwork model that focuses on building on all of the skills of the team and mitigating weaknesses. This environment helped me to cultivate a deep respect for the skills, abilities and knowledge of others. As a youth advisor for the Pertb District Health Unit, I was also required to manage and encourage all of the abilities of a team of 8 high school aged youth. I think that these experiences have taught me to respectfully assert my views and opinions on different issues.

Occupation: Graduate Student Work eperience: My last employer was Parmalat Canada Research and Development in London, Ontario. I was a fulltime employee for over a year from 2007 to 2008 and held the title of microbiologist, analytical chemist and sensory technician. As a microbiologist, I tested dairy products for micro-organhms, fungi and pathogens in support of product development projects and research initiatives, increasing my scientific knowledge and laboratory skil ls in the microbiological field. Regarding pathogen testing, I was responsible for testing environmental and food samples from Parmalat plants across Canada for Listeria and Salmonella species to ensure sanitary environmental and working conditions. Finally, I had received an award of recognition for dedicated performance in December 2007. Before Parmalat, I worked at McDonald’s Restaurant in Ingersoll, Ontario from 2002 to 2006. I held the position of swing manager, and I was responsible for supervising, preparing and positioning people, equipment and products, ensuing leadership, management, and teamwork skills. I was part of the health and safety team, which involved promoting a safe and healthy environment for workers, customers, as well as respecting our environment in and around the building. We frequently organized litter pickup days along with incentives for employees to come up with ways to minimize waste. Education: I am currently pursuing a Masters of Science degree in the Department of Pathology at the University of Western Ontario (expected 2011). I completed my Honours Bachelor of Medical Sciences in Biochemistry and Medical Science also at the University of Western Ontario in 2009. Skills: Through my undergraduate degree, I have taken many biology courses that emphasized the importance of the environment and ecology. I have gained specialized knowledge about ecosystem, wildlife, water body, and atmosphere health as weU as the interactions between organisms and their environment, be it within communities, populations, ecosystems, or the biosphere. My main interests surround organism adaptation, biodiversity, climate change, and conservation.

Interest reason: I want to serve on this body because I feel that I can make a difference in the City of London by offering my knowledge to individuals who can change policy or make decisions about the city infrastructure. Also, I don’t think there is enough emphasis on the importance of environmental preservation and ecosystem health or awareness. The City of London Is a beautiful place, and it should stay that way. I know that as a member of the Environmental and Ecological Planning Advisory Committee, I would improve our City’s Official Plan. Contributions: I fee1 that I would be an asset in providing useful advice to the Municipal Council or other government agencies on essential environmenta1 matters, legislation, andlor policies. Also, I would contribute to the promotion and awareness of natural areas, environmental features and policies as I feel this is a main priority in getting important environmental matters addressed

Page 12: I TO: CHAIR AND MEMBERS BOARD OF CONTROL MEETlNG ON ...council.london.ca/CouncilArchives/Agendas/Board Of... · 11/18/2009  · Environmental and Ecological Planning Advisory Committee

publicly. Past contributions: In my past work experience, I have been on many health and safety committees where I have been responsible for providing solutions to any risks associated with health and safety to the employees, customers, and environment. As well, I have participated in many environmental and health events such as: litter pickup days organized by the health and safety committees, and the annual Thames River Cleanup. Interpersonal: Through my undergraduate and mater’s degree, I have attended many conferences and talks given by professionals in their field. At those events, I have asked questlons and gotten into many discussions with others who are more or less skilled than myself. I feel that from these interactions I have become aceuatomed to seeing and respecting the viewpoint of everyone. Also, during my time at Parmalat and McDonald’s, I have had to attend many meetings where important matters were discussed. In those situations, I was succwsful in getting my points across, as well as respecting and appreciating other pointa that were critical to the topic. Most issues have two sides to them, and it is important that everyone gets the facts from both sides before making an educated decision on a topic.

Occupation: Lawyer Work eperience: Since 2004, I have been employed as an associate lawyer with the law firm of Szemenyei Kirwin MacKenzie LLP. Originally my practice waa focused on civil litigation which included employment law, insurance subrogation, creditorldebtor rights and commercial litigation. Since 2008, I have expanded my practice to include corporate and commercial while b i t i n g my litigation work to deal mainly with employment related matters mcluding human rights, WSIB and wrongful dismissal. Education: In 2001, I graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts Honors Geography (Environment and Resource Management) degree and in 2005 I graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Western Ontario. Since 2005, I have been a member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada. I am current& a member of both the Middlesex Law Association and Canadian and Ontario Bar Associations. Skills: During my undergraduate education in the field of environment and resource management, I wtts enrolled m a number of different courses that have a direct bearing on the type of work the EEPAC is involved with including, but not limited to, sustainable development, environmental protection and assessment, resource management, and urban planning. In addition, I completed an undergraduate thesis focused on wildlife conservation through the assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of provincial attempts to protect endangered species through legislative means, and the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed Endangered Species Act of Canada (now known as the Species a t Risk Act). At face value, my current work as a litigation and corporate lawyer may seem far removed from environmental issues; however I have gained valuable experience in reviewing environmental assessments and advising clients on the potential environmental issues as they relate to proposed corporate developments and/or acquleitions. Furthermore, I have experience in reviewing and applying the laws of Ontario as they relate to numerous different areas which include some of the environmental laws of Ontario such as the Clean Waters Act and the Planning Act.

Interest reason: I have been a London resident my entire life. I completed two degrees at the University of Western Ontario and London is the city my wife and I chose to raise our family. London has provided a lot of opportunities for me and my family. Now that I am more established in my career, I am searching for a chance to give back to my community. To volunteer my time on this committee is one of the ways in which I can give back to the City, all the white contributing to a great cause, environmental protection, which has an impact on both my community and my family’s future. Contributions: As a lawyer, I review the facts, the applicable law and statutes, and assess both the

strengths and weaknesses of my client’s position. I then advocate on their behalf, be it with other counsel, citizens, courts or tribunals. I deal with both private citizens and other professionals on a daily basis which has contributed to my mastering interpersonal skills. Therefore, given my educational and employment background, I bring an extensive set of skilla and knowledge to the committee which has the potential of expanding upon the techinwl skills possessed by its current members and providing a new perspective. Past contributions: Although I have not had an opportunity to serve on this type of community committee before, I am currently the vice-president on the board of directods for a local child care centre. Part of our responsibility is to review all the relevant information available and to make important decisions on matters that affect the centre for the benefit of the staff, children, and their families. hterpersonal. Aa part of being a lawyer in a firm, the ability to work as part of a team is critical. We all have our own individual set of expertise and experience, and having the ability to recognize and make the best use of these individual skills for the benefib of our clients is important. The same applies to the board of directors for a local child care centre that I sit on. We all have various backgrounds, different views and individual perspectiva and it is the ability to recognize these difference3 and share these experiences with one another that assists us in making decisions for the benefit of the child care centre which is critical for ensuring a safe and efficient learning environment for the children and staff.
