Hello Children!!!

how are you this snowy month? I hope you are

obeying and growing in grace and the knowledge

of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Here we

are in your mailbox again. let’s

see what’s in store this edi-

tion. There is a great word

from Mrs. Kotrlova about Re-

specting God’s people and a tes-

timony from Pavlinka over in the Czech

Republic. The Bible study is about gentle-

ness. Also, don’t forget to check out the

final installment from camp.

Remember that we always love hear-

ing from you. We are looking forward

to seeing you next year.

God bless,

Miss Katie

We apologize for the printing error and present

you with these missing treasures on pages 11 and

interesting even after this small delay.

Good morning, children. Thismorning I am going to talk to you fromI Samuel three. It is a chapter that ev-ery one of you knows. It talks aboutlittle Samuel, who was ministering inthe temple with Eli unto the Lord. Inthis story, God spoke to Samuel for thevery first time. It was night time andSamuel was asleep when suddenly, heheard someone calling him, “Samuel,Samuel.” He thought it was Eli, thepriest. Immediately, he jumped up. Hemust have been quite drowsy; just imag-ine somebody waking you up from yoursleep in the middle of the night. Yet,

he jumped up and came to Eli saying,“Here am I.” Eli was surprised and said,“I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.”This went on for a while until Eli fi-nally got an understanding that it wasGod calling Samuel. So he advisedSamuel what to do when he heard thevoice again. He told him to say, Speak,LORD; for thy servant heareth (ISamuel 3:9).

Samuel obeyed Eli. When the Lordcalled him for the fourth time, “Samuel,Samuel,” he said exactly what Eli ad-vised him to say. Then, God spoke tohim a word for Eli. It was the same

word that was spoken to Eli before inchapter two through another man ofGod. It talked about destruction ofEli’s house, because they didn’t obeyGod and lived in sin. Again, God re-minded Eli, “Because you knew all theevil your sons did, yet didn’t do any-thing about it, I will bring judgmentupon your house.”

I wonder what must have been go-ing on in Samuel’s mind when he heardit. You know, he came into the templeand did all thethings with Eli. Eliwas a very impor-tant person forSamuel. Eli wasthe priest; Samuelloved him and washelping him. Butsuddenly, God toldSamuel very un-pleasant thingsabout Eli. In par-ticular, God toldhim that Eli hadiniquity in his life which he didn’t doanything about and because of that thejudgment would come upon him. Itmust have been quite difficult for a boylike Samuel to hear it. Have you everwondered what Samuel must havethought?

After God spoke to Samuel, Samuelwent to bed. It says that he slept untilthe morning. Eli knew that God hadspoken to Samuel in the night and sohe went to him right away in the morn-ing. He asked him, “Samuel, tell me,

what did God speak to you last night? You mustn’t hide anything from me.”

I imagine Samuel standing there andtaking a deep breath, knowing he hadto tell Eli everything. He didn’t dareto hide anything. Do you think it waseasy for Samuel to tell it to Eli? He hadto say, “God told me that you have in-iquity in your life and because of thatHe will bring judgment on your house;bad things will happen in your life.” Ithink it must have been very hard for

Samuel to tell Eli allthese things.

Do you remem-ber what Eli an-swered Samuel afterhe heard the badnews? He said, It isthe LORD: let himdo what seemethhim good (I Samuel3:18). Eli didn’t doanything with theword of the Lord;he didn’t repent.

He left it as it was and said, “Well, it isthe Lord; whatever He wants, let it be.”He didn’t go to God, he didn’t repent,he didn’t call upon God so that Godwould save him; he didn’t make it rightwith his sin.

I retold you this story even though Ibelieve you all know it. However, whenI was reading it, I was thinking, “God,what is it that I am to talk about? Thechildren know all of this. They knowthat You can talk to small children asYou talked to Samuel. Sometimes You

even give them uneasy messages thatthey are to deliver.” Can you imaginecoming to an adult and telling himthings like Samuel told Eli? When Iwas reading it this time, I stopped atthe first verse of chapter 3. It says, And

the child Samuel ministered unto theLORD before Eli. And the word of theLORD was precious in those days;there was no open vision. The fact thatthere was no open vision means thatthe prophets were not bringing forthmany words at thattime in Israel; therewas no vision, as ifGod didn’t speak.

I realized thatevery time I hadread the story be-fore, I thoughtSamuel was actuallyministering in thetemple unto Eli. Ithought he wasthere with Eli, Eliwas teaching himeverything pertaining to the work in thetemple and Samuel was helping him.But reading it this time I realized thatSamuel was not ministering unto Eli,he was ministering unto the Lord. TheLord sent Samuel to the temple so thatHe would teach him and train himthere. I believe that Samuel’s mother,Hannah, knew it very well. She knewthat when she sent Samuel into thetemple, he would learn to serve theLord.

I have noticed one thing in this

story: Samuel had a great respect forEli. You can see it in several things.First, when Samuel heard the voice inthe night, he immediately obeyed andran to Eli. He did it because the priestEli was calling him; Eli was importantto him. Does it ever happen to youthat an adult person is calling you andyou pretend that you don’t hear them? But Samuel didn’t behave like this, hehad respect within himself. Immedi-ately, when he heard the voice, he

jumped up andran.

The secondthing I noticed isthat when Samuelheard what Godhad to say aboutEli, all those badthings, he wasafraid to tell Eli.You know, I real-ized that some-times, when weknow something

bad about somebody else, we are verybold to tell them. “You are terrible. You do this and that.” Do we some-times do that? An example is how wesometimes behave at home. We talkunhesitatingly. You may be right. Yourbrother or sister may have done some-thing that is not good. But we shouldhave respect one towards another aslittle Samuel had. When we learnsomething about somebody who is do-ing something wrong, we should notapproach him proudly and haughtily.

Samuel could have gotten puffed upand said, “That Eli! I am serving herein the temple with him and he behaveslike this!?! I didn’t realize he would dothis! And God told me!” He couldhave run out of his bed, gone to Eliand told him, “God has told me some-thing! Now I know it about you! Youare wrong!” Since that moment, hecould have had his nose up high andthought proudly, “That Eli!”

Children, I found out that an atti-tude of disrespectsometimes comesupon us. For ex-ample, you have anolder friend andfind out that theyare doing some-thing wrong. Im-mediately you be-gin to despise theperson in yourheart. Or, it mayhappen to you to-wards your parents.Do you think your parents are perfectand they are doing everything right? No, they aren’t. Sometimes they yell atyou and it is not nice. Or, sometimesthey are not nice towards each other. At that moment you can say, “Well, what parents I have! Should I obeythem when they behave like this?”Then, you tell them, “Mom, why areyou telling me this? You are yelling atme so why are you telling me that Ishould not do this!”

I realized that this is very wrong. You

know, the fact is that Samuel came tothe temple, but he didn’t minister untoEli, he ministered unto the Lord. Eventhough God has not given you to go tothe temple and do the things that weredone there, you are at home in yourfamily; you are helping your mommyand daddy and learning many things.I believe that God wants you to realizethat you are not there so much to min-ister unto your parents, but you arethere because God placed you there to

minister unto Him.And so eventhough you maysometimes see thatyour mommy ordaddy don’t dosomething well, it isvery important tokeep your respecttowards them. Youhave to know that itwas God Who hasgiven you yourmommy and daddy

and that it is necessary to have respectand not be arrogant towards them.

You can see in I Samuel three thatSamuel had respect. Do you know whathappened to him later in the same chap-ter? It is written that he grew, and theLORD was with him, and did let noneof his words fall to the ground (ISamuel 3:19). It means that everythingSamuel prophesied and said came topass. Then, it says in verse 20, And allIsrael from Dan even to Beersheba

knew that Samuel was established to

Page 7: I Samuel 3:19a Vol. 4, Issue 12 December 2009 · Miss Katie and the K4K Staff. K.I.T. for KIDS 3 December 2009 Did the October issue of the Keeping in Touch ... When the Lor d called

be a prophet of the LORD.

I believe this is what God wants togive us. He wants us to grow and learnto minister unto the Lord in our fam-ily. Then, all the people will see it whenwe are respectful towards our parents. And it’s not only about our parents;even in the fellowship there might besomebody who is an elder and I canlearn from them. But I may learn thatthey didn’t do something well or thatthey may have a problem with some-thing. Yet, I cannotdespise them in myheart, because if Ido, I will pay for itand miss the glorythat God preparedfor me.

You know, Eli’ssons were also inthe temple. Theydid terrible thingsthere and littleSamuel saw it all.He saw how theywere robbing people; he knew that Eliwas not dealing with it. Yet, he kepthis heart clean and God trained him, because he believed the Lord placedhim there. He knew it. I believe thathis mother talked to him about it. Shetold him to have respect towards thepriest Eli and towards the Lord. Shetaught him about it. She taught himwhat God is like and Samuel receivedit in his heart. Therefore, even thoughthere were people around him who didunrighteousness, God brought him

through that environment, was able tomake a prophet out of him and all otherpeople knew that he was a faithful ser-vant of the Lord.

Children, I wanted to encourage youso that you would not despise anybody,so that you would not despise thosewho are older than you when you seean error with them. You know, some-times we have a tendency to think, “Heis so old, he shouldn’t do such badthings!” It may happen even to us

adults. We may seean older servantand say, “Heshouldn’t be doingthis any more!” anddespise him in ourheart. But whenwe do that, a doorcloses for us in ourheart and we arenot able to drawwhat God is givingus through that per-son. Then, our

growth in God is stopped and we don’tfulfill that which God has called us to.

So remember this one thing: eventhough Samuel learned something badabout Eli, he kept respect in his hearttowards him. The same way that whenyou see somebody doing somethingbad, even though he is a servant of God,keep the respect so that God could blessyou. Because if you despise the person, you will miss what God has preparedfor you.

May the Lord bless you. Amen.

Wednesday marked a VERY important day - the day we entered the Holy of Holies, the place

where God resides. But you can’t just casually walk into the Holy of Holies. You have to enter

through the veil. Thankfully, Jesus made the way for us to do just that. Do you remember what is

written in Matthew 27:50-51? It says, Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up

the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the

earth did quake, and the rocks rent. It was then, through the Blood that Jesus shed, that we have

been given the ability to break through our flesh (which is what is represented by the veil) and enter

the Holy of Holies.

Juriga (yoor-ig-uh) did not anticipate that life in the hut withLesina’s (less-in-ah) poor wife would be exactly pleasant, but hewas ready to help and put up with whatever discomfort mightbe necessary to relieve Lesina’s already heavy burden. He hadnot the faintest idea that the result might be quite the opposite.

Lesina and his wife arrived late at night, tired out and quitecontent to drink the hot soup Palko had prepared. After ar-ranging the bed with its clean sheets and blankets and the downypillows they had brought with them, they were soon safely tuckedaway for the night.

It was not, therefore, until the following day that Juriga couldbegin to study Lesina’s wife. “Poor thing,” said the old man tohimself, full of pity, “so young, too, not more than twenty eightor nine years old at the most, and so beautiful and gentle in herways.”

Soon, little by little, her very presence in the hut, insteadof being a burden, became a joy and blessing.

From the first morning the meals of the smallhousehold were changed. By noon the little ladyhad prepared a delicious soup which was taken

In next to no time Palko was at the chapel house. In the hall hemet the old servant.

“Malina (mal-in-ah) has been resting and I would not let anybodydisturb him,” she said, “but he gave me orders never to send youaway. Go in and show him what you have in the basket before tak-ing it to the housekeeper.”

Letting himself into the room quietly, Palko looked around forthe priest, and finally, in the dim light, discovered him on the sofa.He had his eyes closed, but immediately opened them.

“Well, Palko, you are indeed welcome! At last, you are here!” andthe priest stretched out a thin hand. “I thought you were nevercoming and I began to ask myself if you had forgotten me. Therenow, don’t look like that. I well knew how you have wanted to comeand see me.”

“You can be sure of that,” said poor Palko trying hard to keepback the tears. Putting his basket on the table and kneeling by thesofa he did a thing he had never done before. He kissed his friend

tenderly on the cheek just as he would have kissed Lesina’s(less-in-ah) wife. This unexpected outburst of affection

caused the lonely priest the most profound emotion. He gathered the boy in his arms and returned thekiss.

“Why are you lying down at this time of day?”asked Palko with great tenderness. “Are you tired

or sick?”“I am a bit tired and also I have sharp pains that come

in my side which make it difficult to breathe as soon as I start towalk. I have not spoken of this to anybody and only tell you nowthat you might pray for me to the Saviour. Perhaps He might bepleased to heal me.”

“Let us pray to Him now and then I will tell what I have come for.Lord Jesus, my beloved Lord Jesus, here we are with You, for Youhave promised to be with us, is it not so? I do ask You, please, toheal my friend, Malina. You know that he cannot preach when he’ssick and how necessary it is that he should teach the people theWay. The forest guard’s wife wants to know all about it. Amen.”

“Yes, Son of God,” added the priest himself. “Thou Who didstcarry our infirmities, including mine, thou knowest how much Iwould like to do for Thee to help Thy people who still walk in dark-ness. How many years have I been but a poor blind guide for theseblind ones, a mere hireling, and I did not lead the sheep. Please letme repair the result of my blind carelessness.

“I did not know the Way or Thy Book and now this dear lad hasbrought me into the light for Thou hast revealed unto babes whatThou hast hidden from the wise and prudent. Now, Lord, I am soyoung yet and have almost the whole of life before me; if Thou wiltheal me, I shall have but one desire, to be used in Thy service. Amen.

A solemn silence reigned in the room as in the church itself. Then Palko broke it exclaiming, “I believe, sir, that He will do whatwe have asked.”

“Well, Palko, I believe He will let me complete my duty at least.Only I ask that you continue to pray for me. You know that we areboth serving the same Master and so we should help one another.”

“You’re feeling a bit better already, sir. Are you not?” said Palko.“Yes, I am better! As soon as you entered the room, I felt

relieved. You see, Palko, no one has come to take yourplace; and on finding myself alone and with this

weight upon me I have indeed been sore afflicted.”“You have no father or mother?”

“They died some time ago.”“But have you no grandfather or brothers or

sisters?”“I had them, but all my relatives have gone, except my

sister, who was here with me a short time ago, but she could notstay. She lives a long way from here.”

“Who, then, is the elderly lady that keeps house for you?”“She is a distant relative of my father’s. Just before your arrival I

felt so lonely I knew not what to do, but now the dear Lord has sentyou to me. Blessed be His Name! What is in the basket you havebrought?”

“Oh, I forgot. These things are from the forest guard’s wife andthey will help to make you better. Just look! Wild pigeons,” andPalko sighed. “Poor little things. It’s a shame they had to die. Eggs. Then that special sheep cheese you’re so fond of. And here’s somelovely rye bread and just look at this butter!”

“Such a host of good things,” and even the priest’s eyes sparkledlike Palko’s in spite of himself. “I have eaten hardly a mouthfultoday. I have preached twice and held a funeral service and done afew other things. Now I’m beginning to feel a bit hungry. There’s aknife over there on the table. Cut a piece of bread for each of us andwe’ll try the butter and cheese with it.”

So they set to work, but the priest did not make much headway.Nevertheless, he urged Palko to eat plenty and Dunaj (doon-eye),who lingered near the door, was not forgotten.

“There is one other thing I’ve forgotten and that is the messagefrom the forest guard’s good wife to you. She said she could neverforget your sermon and also she wishes to buy a Bible if it does notcost too much. She said she wanted with all her heart to find theway that leads to God and if it’s necessary to find Him by makinglong pilgrimages or paying for masses, she’s willing to go to any length,

only that she may find the way to God.”Palko had not thought that his message from the good

woman would cause the priest so much joy. On hearingthese words, he rose painfully from the couch, searchedfor a pile of shining new books arranged on a desknear by and taking one down, he exclaimed, “Blessed

be God! I sent immediately for a good number, but I had no idea that I would need them so

quickly.”Seating himself at the table, he wrote on the first page

the same words that had been found in Palko’s Book. Then, look-ing at Palko, he said, “So she wishes to make long pilgrimages andpay for many masses for her soul’s sake if necessary? Tell her to readthe words that I now write here. She’ll find them also written in theBook.” And the priest began to write anew.

Palko looked over his shoulder and this is what he read:“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of your-

selves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast”(Ephesians 2:8,9). “Not by works of righteousness which we havedone, but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing ofregeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost... through Jesus Christour Saviour; that being justified by His grace, we should be madeheirs according to the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:5-7), for “Christhath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse forus” (Galatians 3:13).

At this moment the old housekeeper entered.“Here are some things for Palko and his grandfather,” she said.

“But, sir, how pale your face is! You should go to bed at once.” Fullof anxiety, she threw back the covers of the bed.

“Yes, yes, a little later, my dear. Just now I shall go with Palko alittle way through the garden. We should not keep him longer forhe has a long road home.”

Never had it cost Palko so much as it did now to leave his friend.“If you would but let me, I should prefer to stay with you until to-morrow at least,” he said when they were in the garden. “You are solonely, dear sir.”

“No, no, Palko, that cannot be! Your grandfather, who does notknow where you are, would be greatly worried and the forest guard’s

wife likewise. Go home now. I am much better and I have theLord with me. Tell your grandfather to come to see me

tomorrow. I have something of great importance totell him.”

Before taking leave of Palko, the priest asked about

Lesina’s wife and if Palko was waiting on herfaithfully. But the telling of all this took some little

time so that the priest found himself at the foot of themountain where they sat down together to rest.

Later, when Palko finally arrived at the hut, he found his grandfa-ther and Lesina anxiously waiting having gone out several times tolook for him. He had had to go by the forest guard’s house to de-liver the Bible so that, although he had stopped there only longenough to change his baskets and to see the happiness of the goodwife on receiving the Book, it was indeed late when, tired out, hetapped on Juriga’s (yoor-ig-uh) door. When he had explained allthat had happened, they could not be angry with him and Palkosoon fell asleep in his chair by the fire.

“I wonder what the priest can want with me,” growled Juriga af-ter Palko fell asleep. “What do you think it can be, Martin?” he saidto Lesina.

“Perhaps he wants to persuade you to return Palko,” Lesina saidas angrily as Juriga. “Gentlemen like him often have their fancies.Palko has told me that the priest exacted a promise from him toserve no one but him if anything should happen to you. Perhaps hewants to ask you to give Palko to him now for he would have diffi-culty in finding another like him. I pray you do nothing of the kind. The boy is no relation to me, but I could hardy bear to see him go.At times it seems as if I could not love a son of my own any morethan I do that lad.”

“Don’t be frightened,” growled Juriga clearing his throat a bit.“I’ll not give him up, you may be sure of that. What would becomeof me without him? Is he not the one who has been leading me toGod? Perhaps that may be the reward Rasga said God would giveme if I took care of him.”

Lesina would have liked more details regarding Juriga’s relationswith Palko and his original grandfather, Rasga, but it was late and

so they all turned in for the night and were soon lost in theland of dreams.

“Gentle with the baby!” my mom said as she placed her arm around to steadyme. It was an early spring Sunday afternoon and I wanted to hold mynew little sister. It was still too wet to play outside so our entirefamily was indoors.

I knew my mom wanted to rest for a while so I offered to hold thebaby. I was so excited! Although my “new” sister was almost a month old,

I had never really held her for a long time. Now was my chance! Mymom agreed and then proceeded to show me just how to hold herhead and how to make sure her arms didn’t get squished. With a

burp cloth on my shoulder, I carefully hoisted her up - she was such atiny thing! - and then I just sat in my chair quietly looking at her.

She was the highlight of my day. With tiny feet and toes, soft hair, and oh-so-chubby cheeks I thought she was the cutest baby I had ever seen. By justlooking at her, you instantly became gentle. No roughhousing around the baby!

Now, you know, gentleness shouldn’t just be reserved for babies; weshould be using it every day with our brothers, sisters, parents andfriends.

GENTLENESS is described in the dictionary as:1. Softness of manners; mildness of temper; sweetness of disposi-tion; meekness.2. Kindness; benevolence.

3. Tenderness; mild treatment.

Even if my brother is being sooo aggravating, I should be able tokeep my temper under control; I should be able to move in love to-wards him. Believe me, I know how hard it can be to be loving at all

times to a sibling. I haven’t quite gotten over that yet.I would like for you to think about being gentle to everyonearound you. What if a butterfly landed on your arm?Would you be very quiet and calm and gentle so asnot to hurt it? Or, what if your mother

asked you to bring her one of her best chinaplates from the cupboard? Would you hold it very carefully?

I think we need to treat others the way we would a “chinaplate” or a “butterfly,” being very careful with them - not sayingmean things or doing mean things, but being gentle and soft and kind.

By Mrs. Pavlina Davis

The Greek word for gentleness in Galatians 5:22 is chrestotes (khray-stot’-ace), which means usefulness, i.e. morally, excellence (in character or demeanor). The word chrestotes then comes from a word chrestos (khrase-tos’) meaning

employed, i.e. (by implication) useful (in manner or morals). The following is a list of some other verses in the Bible that carry

the same Greek word for gentleness as Galatians 5:22. It is oftentranslated as goodness or kindness. These verses prove that gentle-

ness/goodness/kindness is one of the characteristics of God and thosewho aspire to be His servants have to bring forth this sweet fruit ofthe Spirit.

Romans 2:4, Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness (chrestotes) andforbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness (chrestos) ofGod leadeth thee to repentance?

Romans 3:12, They are all gone out of the way, they are together becomeunprofitable; there is none that doeth good (chrestotes), no, not one.

Romans 11:22, Behold therefore the goodness (chrestotes) and severity ofGod: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness (chrestotes), ifthou continue in his goodness (chrestotes): otherwise thou also shalt be cutoff.

II Corinthians 6:4-6, But in all things approving ourselves as the ministersof God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in dis-tresses, 5In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, inwatchings, in fastings; 6By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering,by kindness (chrestotes), by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned.

In Oriental Mindoro Province, Brother Hernando Velasco is calling forhelp. He reports that more than 2,000 young teenagers (between 10 to 14years of age) in the last two weeks have accepted Jesus into their hearts inschools where he has shown the Christian videos that he got from LovePackages. School officials are begging him to go from classroom to classroomto show these Christian videos and talk to the children about Jesus.

We went on street evangelism to share the tracts in the buses, highwaysand by-ways at least having a one minute interaction with the people toenquire as to whether they knew what salvation was and Who Jesus is. Wecame into contact with as many as 1,000 people and directed them to a localchurch. We get testimonies from the people saying how their lives havebeen changed and restored. This motivates us to go on the extra miles whenwe see the lives changed and transformed.

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that

your joy may be full. These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the

time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew

you plainly of the Father. At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not

unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the Father him-

self loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed

that I came out from God (John 16:24-27).

The first lesson I received in the power of the spoken word

occurred one day when Jesus Christ came into my room during

those memorable seven months in which He personally taught me

the Bible. It was the year 1948. That particular day we had the usual appointment

for four o’clock in the afternoon. I was in a little early, waiting upon Him. Sud-

denly He was there. His mood and attitude was upbeat. I was lifted up in heavenly

places the moment he appeared. He said, “Ask Me for anything you desire and

you shall have it.” Immediately, my mind was thrown into a whirl and I could not

think of anything to ask for. At first, I thought , “Here is God; I need to ask Him for

something I think He would want me to ask for.” At the same time, I found myself

thinking that maybe the Scripture which said you should ask for

anything you desire had some translation error. He said, “No,

ask for something that you desire, not what you think God

wants you to desire.” I said, “Lord, give me a healing; let

me see someone healed.” He replied, “Take it.”

I got His word and asked Him to excuse me, because I had

Page 25: I Samuel 3:19a Vol. 4, Issue 12 December 2009 · Miss Katie and the K4K Staff. K.I.T. for KIDS 3 December 2009 Did the October issue of the Keeping in Touch ... When the Lor d called

to use that gift right away. I ran out of the room seek-

ing over the whole district for a sick person. I found

a woman who was given up by the doctors to die

shortly. They were actually preparing for her burial.

But I couldn’t think of anything like that. All I was thinking of was the

gift of healing! I wanted to see somebody healed! When I approached her, I didn’t

think of praying. I didn’t say, “Oh, God, please touch her and bless her and heal

her.” No! I had the gift of healing, so I rushed over to her and said, “Be healed!”

It was such an absolute act of childish faith; it had no space for doubt. The gift

worked like magic. I saw it before my eyes. The woman got up, smiled at me and

was totally healed. When she saw me inquiring from her husband if she was really

sick, she laughed at me and said, “You don’t believe, do you?” She was asking me

if I didn’t believe, but it was difficult to believe after you see a person healed so

easily and so quickly the first time in your life! It seemed to be too easy to be real.

At that point in time, I began to understand what faith is. God says, “Walk by

faith.” It means that you must make little steps, step by step, step

by step, and step by step. You are not going to be all good the

same day, but you must walk by faith.

The first step you make is called belief. Jesus says in Matthew

21:22, “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, be-

lieving, ye shall receive.” If you believe the thing and believe that you

have it, then you will receive it. For God says that whatever you desire, you must

ask for it and it will be given to you. “Therefore I say unto you, What things

soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have

them” (Mark 11:24).

However, there is a verse we mustn’t forget, “If ye abide in me, and my words

abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John

15:7).

The key to having a spiritual authority is the following:

1. Abide, abide, abide in Jesus Christ.

2. Let the Word abide in you.

The Word in you abides as a living person and you abide in Christ as a living

organism. When these come together in divine unison, then every agent of God

and nature must obey, for it is the Word of God.

Hello! How are all myfavorite children in theentire world doing?Grandmas are like that, you know. They love alltheir grandchildren;whether they are big orsmall, it does not matterat all. Another favoritething this grandma likes todo is sit down with you alland talk about what’s hap-pening with the RiseAbove family. Let’s see,oh yes, they are still inCalifornia, but it looks likethey are packing and get-ting ready to go home. What’s this? Oh, it’s ourThumbkin with his fishinghat, goggles and butterflynet. What a character! He is jumping around the

pool still trying to catch abullfrog.

So many adventureshappened this last month- visiting the grape or-chard, swimming in AuntMartha’s pool, hunting forthe giant bullfrogs andswimming in the ocean af-ter God marvelously res-cued two of the childrenfrom drowning.

Now, have we figuredout why Thumbkin wearshis goggles to catch bull-frogs? Pumpkin had thatsame question. Thumbkinsaid it was so he could seeclearly and no bullfrogcould pass him by. OhThumbkin, you are such acharacter.

It’s beautiful and sunny

here in California today, but Daddy told the chil-dren that back home heheard it had snowed alittle bit. “Wow,” thoughtPetunia, “we will go fromroller skating here to iceskating back at home!”Well, probably not iceskating quite yet, but it’sdefinitely cooler.

With the news ofcooler temperatures backhome, the children de-cided to ask if they couldswim one last time beforethey left Aunt Martha’s.When the answer was yes,you can imagine the rushto get their swimmingsuits on. Of course, ourThumbkin had his gogglesand swimming fins, too.

Pumpkin was swimminglaps (that’s what they callit when you swim to oneside of the pool and back),the girls were being funnytrying to do ballet in thewater and Thumbkin wasjust being Thumbkin pad-dling around and pretend-ing to go under water look-ing for fish!

Aunt Martha had tolaugh. “I hope there areno fish in my pool,” shesaid.

“Okay, children,” saidDaddy. “It’s 9:30 A.M.and we need to get on theroad.” With that the chil-dren knew it was time toget out of the pool.

Aunt Martha had a spe-cial shower by the backdoor where you couldrinse off the chlorine wa-ter from the pool whilestill having your suit on.Thumbkin thought it wasinteresting when the girlssoaped up their hair andrinsed off. So he tried tosoap up, but with hisgoggles on, swimming finsand fishing pole he washaving a time keeping ahold of the soap.

As soon as the childrenhad changed their clothesand eaten a small snackAunt Martha had pre-pared, it was time to saygood bye. Of course, it

was a little hard to tellAunt Martha goodbye aseveryone enjoyed beingwith her so much.

“Okay, big hugs,” saidMommy, “and let’s get inthe car.” After hugs andkisses and a prayer forthe journey, the RiseAbove family was ready tostart their two and a halfday drive back home.

“Good bye,” waved AuntMartha.

“Love you,” was the re-ply from the van as itpulled away.

Now, Mother had pre-pared a Bible lesson andthought it would be goodto do Bible time in the car.Everyone but Daddy gottheir Bibles (he couldn’tbecause he was driving).

“Let’s turn to Esther inour Bibles,” said Mommy.“We have read this storybefore, but today I wouldlike to study what washappening in this book ofthe Bible as it is very im-portant. The story beginsby telling us about a verygreat king namedAhasuerus. His kingdomwas very, very large. Hereigned from India evenunto Ethiopia, more than2,300 miles (3,800 kilo-meters) in distance, rulingover 127 provinces. Aprovince is like what we

know in the United Statesas a state, for examplethe state of Georgia. SoKing Ahasuerus reignedover 127 provinces. That’s really a lot. He wasa very great king and inthe third year of hisreign,” read Mommy, “hemade a feast unto all hisprinces and his servants, the power of Persia andMedia. The nobles andprinces of the provinceswere before him. Thisfeast went on for many, many days as the kingshowed the riches of hisglorious kingdom. Whenthose days were over, theking made another feastunto all the people thatwere present in Shushanthe palace (where the kinglived) both unto great andsmall, seven days in thecourt of the garden of theking’s palace.

“The court was deco-rated with white, greenand violet blue hangingsfastened with cords offine linen and purple tosilver rings and pillars ofmarble. It was a mostmagnificent banquet!”

Now, Mommy continuedto read the whole book ofEsther in the Bible.Thumbkin was listening, but the car was moving sonicely on the highway and

Page 28: I Samuel 3:19a Vol. 4, Issue 12 December 2009 · Miss Katie and the K4K Staff. K.I.T. for KIDS 3 December 2009 Did the October issue of the Keeping in Touch ... When the Lor d called

Thumbkin’s seat was socomfy that before heknew it he was asleep andwhistle, snort, snort, whistle could be heardthroughout the car. Yup,Thumbkin was fast asleep, but an interesting thinghappened. In his sleep hefound himself standingbehind a very large, marble pillar. As hepeeked around, he saw a

servant passing by with alarge tray of food andbeautiful vessels of gold, all different from one an-other. There were somany people! Thumbkinthought, “Where am I?”and then he heard a manproclaim, “How great isKing Ahasuerus!”

In his dream, Thumbkinwas at the king’s palace inShushan. Thumbkin sawthe king dressed in a royal

robe of purple, blue andgold motion to seven of hismen to bring QueenVashti before him. Hesaw the men bow beforethe king and hurry to dothe king’s command.Thumbkin followed themen to where QueenVashti was. She had abeautiful crown of royaltyon her head and lookedvery beautiful dressed in

her royal gown. But some-thing happened. Sheturned to the men thatwere sent to bring her tothe king and said, “No. Irefuse to go.” The maid-ens that were at QueenVashti’s banquet werequite surprised to see thequeen refuse an orderfrom the king.

Thumbkin saw theking’s men return to theking without the queen.

The king was very wrothand angry. “Oh no,”thought Thumbkin, “whatwill happen now?”

The king sought coun-sel from his wise men andMemucan answered be-fore the king and theprinces, “Vashti the queenhath not done wrong tothe king only, but also toall the princes and to allthe people.” Memucan

continued to say,“Vashti’s examplewill make otherwomen think it isokay to disobeyand dishonortheir husbands.”

So Thumbkinsaw the kingstand up and de-cree, “QueenVashti shall nolonger come be-fore me. I willgive her royal es-

tate unto another that isbetter than she is.”

Now, in his dream,Thumbkin was in a littlehouse. It had only oneroom with a little fireplace. A fair young maidenwas talking to her uncle.Could it be… Yes, it wasEsther talking toMordecai. She had madehim lunch and was makingsure he had enough todrink and eat. Thumbkin

Page 29: I Samuel 3:19a Vol. 4, Issue 12 December 2009 · Miss Katie and the K4K Staff. K.I.T. for KIDS 3 December 2009 Did the October issue of the Keeping in Touch ... When the Lor d called

could see she was sopleasant and kind to heruncle.

There was a knock onthe door. Mordecai an-swered the door andheard the man speak thedecree - the king waslooking for a new queen.Esther did not want toleave her uncle as sheloved him very much, butbecause her uncle bid hergo she obeyed willingly. This sweet spirit or atti-tude of behavior could beseen by those at the king’spalace. Thumbkin sawHegai, who was in chargeof taking care of thewomen that came to thepalace, was pleased withher. Hegai was so pleasedwith her that he showedher much kindness.

Before Esther left herhome, Thumbkin sawMordecai take Estheraside to talk with her.“Now, Esther,” he said toher, “do not show that youare a Jewish girl, not atthis time.”

“Yes, Uncle Mordecai, Iwill do as you say.”

So when she was at thepalace, Esther once againobeyed and did not showthat she was a Jew. Manydays went by andMordecai walked everyday before the court of

the women’s house toknow how Esther did.

Six months went by,eight months, ninemonths. Then aftertwelve month’s time, thespecial purification pro-cess was over, and amaiden could go beforethe king. Now, Esther’sturn had come. She couldhave whatever she de-sired - jewels or expen-sive robes - but Estherdid a marvelous thing: in-stead of being vain orfoolish she just receivedwhatever Hegai gave her. What a lovely way to be.Because of her good atti-tude, she obtained favorin the sight of all themthat looked upon her. Sowhen Esther was taken toKing Ahasuerus, the kingloved her and she ob-tained grace and favorand the king placed theroyal crown upon her head.Thumbkin found himselfjumping for glee as thepeople heard the news.

Now, in those days,Mordecai sat at the king’sgate. There were two menthat kept the gate, whichmeans they were guardingwho went in or out.“What’s this?” thoughtThumbkin. These two mendid not like something theking had told them to do.

They got so angry; in factthey were going to try andkill the king. “Oh no!”thought Thumbkin. ButMordecai saw it and has-tened to tell Esther.Esther was thankful heruncle told her. BecauseMordecai spoke to QueenEsther and she had thematter dealt with, KingAhasuerus was savedfrom harm.

Now, this whole time,Esther had not shown shewas a Jew, because shedid as Mordecai had com-manded her just as shedid when she was a childgrowing up in his home.

“What an adventure!”said Thumbkin to himself.“I’m in the palace withQueen Esther!” Justthen, wicked Haman, theenemy of the Jews walkedby. He had a frown on hisface as he passedMordecai who did not bowto him as the others did.

“Oh my!” said Thumb-kin. “He’s going to see theking. I must warn the kingabout Haman.”

It was too late whenThumbkin got into thecastle. The king was al-ready agreeing to Haman’srequest to kill a certainpeople whose laws, hesaid, were different fromall others. The next thing

Page 30: I Samuel 3:19a Vol. 4, Issue 12 December 2009 · Miss Katie and the K4K Staff. K.I.T. for KIDS 3 December 2009 Did the October issue of the Keeping in Touch ... When the Lor d called

Thumbkin saw were theking’s messengers sent tospread this news that onthe 13th day of the 12th

month people were told todestroy the Jews.Mordecai rent his clothsand put on sackcloth withashes, went out into themidst of the city andcried with a loud voice.Tears came to Thumbkin’seyes, as he could sensethe sorrow.

Now, in the car Mommywas still talking aboutEsther, too, and wonderedwhat Thumbkin wasdreaming about as he wassaying, “Oh no, oh no!”Pumpkin shook him a bit towake him up, but inThumbkin’s dream, he waswalking amongst the Jews. When Pumpkin was trying

to wake him, Thumbkinthought it was a man fromthe street. The Jewswere weeping and cryingout to God.

Queen Esther did notknow what was going on,yet she sent one of herservants to speak toMordecai. Mordecai ex-plained to him all that hadhappened unto him and ofthe sum of money thatHaman had promised topay the king’s treasuriesin order to be able to de-stroy the Jews.

“Here is a copy of thedecree,” said Mordecai.“Show it to Esther so shemay speak to the king.”

The servant rushedback to Esther andThumbkin was trying tokeep up. The servant,

Hatach was his name, spoke to Esther the wordsof Mordecai.

Queen Esther said,“But you must tell myuncle, ‘You know the law.If the king does not bidyou and you go in to hiscourt, unless he holdsout his golden scepter, you will surely die.’”

Now, Thumbkin for-got he was in a dream

and went nearbyEsther. He wassaying, “You must

tell the king, you must!”Of course, she did nothear Thumbkin.

So Thumbkin againfound himself running af-ter Hatach as he wentback to Mordecai. Stillasleep he was moving hisfeet sitting in his seat asif he was running.

When Mordecai heardEsther’s response he said,“Go back to Esther. Tellher she should not thinkherself safe in the king’shouse more than all theJews.” He further said,“If thou hold thy peaceand say nothing, then shallthere enlargement anddeliverance arise to theJews from another place, but thou and thy father’shouse shall be destroyed. And who knoweth whetherthou art come to the king-

When Esther heardwhat her uncle had to say,she knew he was right.“Okay,” she said, “let usseek God’s face and let usfast for three days. Go,gather all the Jews thatare in Shushan. If I per-ish, I perish, but I am go-ing to see the king.”

Thumbkin could feelthe excitement in the airas the people joined to-gether praying and peti-tioning God for deliver-ance. The third day ar-rived. Queen Esther puton her royal apparel andstood in the inner court. When the king sawEsther, she obtained fa-vor of the Lord. As shewalked toward the king,Thumbkin heard Daddysaying, “Thumbkin, wakeup, you keep on kicking

similar adventures asEsther.” Thumbkin justsmiled as Mommy spoke.“We have choices to makeevery day who we will lis-ten to - God and His HolySpirit or the wicked devil.See, man’s ways areagainst God’s ways. So wemust learn to be differ-ent than the world. TheHamans in this world donot like it and will try tostop us but let us seek tosee the king and be likeEsther who obeyed thewill of God.”

Until next time, let usfight the good fight offaith and trust God al-ways!

Now the car ride hasjust begun, so let’s seewhat other adventuresthe Rise Above family willbe in next time.

“Isn’t God wonderful?”said Mommy. “Notice howEsther learned to obey asa young girl and even asshe was older and now be-ing a queen she did notforget to hear wise coun-sel from her uncle andsubmitted and obeyed hisrequests. Children, shecould have done whatevershe wanted, but she sawwisdom in listening to heruncle.” Thumbkin wasshaking his head yes towhat Mommy said as hestill felt like he had beenright there in the Biblestory.

Do You Know Who You Are?Do You Know Who You Are?Do You Know Who You Are?Do You Know Who You Are?Do You Know Who You Are?

Do you know who you are?

Can you see with My eyes? Have you heard

What I’ve said in My Word?

Do you know who you are?

And if I am the Shepherd, then you are a lamb

I can carry in My arms as My own.

And if trouble is nigh, I would rather die

And I did so you’d never be alone.

And if I am the Vine, then you are the branch

And your living and Mine are all one.

And the fruit that you bear other men will share

And in this is My Father’s glory shown.

And if I am the Father, then you are the child

And all that you need I will give.

Let your heart be at rest, I’ll do what is best

For I said I have come that you may live.

And if My name is Love, then you’re the beloved

For whom I have lived and have died.

What more could I do to show you it’s true?

In My eyes there is no one like you.

One morning, Nancy Donovan’s second-grade daughter, RebeccaLynn, was supposed to bring cookies for the class treat. But Nancyhad gotten a late start baking, and the cookies weren’t ready to takeon the school bus. “I’ll finish them and drop them off at school waybefore lunch,” Nancy promised. Rebecca Lynn was not happy aboutthis, but she kissed her mom goodbye and got on the bus.

In an hour or so, the cookies were ready. Nancy’s husband went out to start the car, as Nancydressed the three-year-old, Jerry. But she didn’t hear anything. Looking out, she realized that thecar’s engine wasn’t turning over. After about fifteen minutes, her husband came back. “The car’sdead,” he said. “I’ve tried everything but it won’t start.”

“What are we going to do now?” Nancy wondered aloud. “Rebecca is going to be so disap-pointed.”

Little Jerry looked up. “We could pray!” he suggested, his eyes bright. The adults looked athim. “Well...” Nancy began. But Jerry was already on his knees. “Please, God, make the carstart!” he prayed.

Nancy’s husband smiled. “I guess I’d better try it again.” He went out, turned the ignition key- and the engine sprang to life. Astonished, and before the car could change its mind, Nancy andJerry jumped in and they sped to school. Nancy’s husband kept the engine idling as Nancy andJerry brought the cookies to a delighted Rebecca, then ran back to the car.

Next stop, the mechanic. He would be back in a few moments, they were told, so they satdown to wait. Soon the mechanic returned, opened the hood and looked at the car. “Who towedthis in?” he asked.

“No one,” Nancy’s husband replied. “We drove it here.”The mechanic shook his head. “You couldn’t have done that. The

battery is completely dead. It’s ice cold.”The adults looked at each other. What a Father they served; One

Who cared about every detail of their lives! And what a lesson toremember, that God loves to give His children good things. Even thelittlest ones.

“I have told many people about our miracle,” Nancy says. “Theprayers of children are amazing.”

Blue Eyes?Blue Eyes?Blue Eyes?Blue Eyes?Blue Eyes?

A true story

by Moriah

“Dear Jesus, thankYou for Mommy and Daddy, andGrandma and Grandpa. In Jesus’ name, amen. I am all done, Mommy,“ said youngthree-year-old Amy Wilson Carmichael.

“Amy, is there anything else you wouldlike to pray about before I pray?” said Mrs.Carmichael.

“Well, I guess… I really want blue eyeslike yours, but I have brown ones. Doyou think that if I pray, God might makeme have blue eyes when I wake up? Doyou, Mommy?”

Her mother replied, “He might; whydon’t you pray and ask Him… then youneed to go to sleep.  It is way past yourbed time!”

Amy continued in prayer, “And Jesus,”she said, “I know I already prayed, but Iwould really like blue eyes and maybe, ifit is alright with You, could You give mesome blue ones while I am asleep?  In

Jesus’ name, amen!”After Mrs. Carmichael had prayed she

bent down to give little Amy a goodnightkiss on her cheek and said, “Good night,Amy. I will see you in the morning! Ilove you!“

“Night, mommy! I love you, too! “The next morning when little Amy

woke up, she ran to push a chair over tolook in the mirror that sat on top of herdresser. Once she had the chair situated, she clambered up and stood as tall as she

could on her tippy toes.  As shepeeked over the top of the dresser tolook at her reflection, she found thather eyes were the same brown they

had been the night before when she hadprayed.  A very disappointed Amy climbedoff the chair and ran to go find hermommy.

“Mommy! Mommy! “shouted Amy.“Yes, Amy, I am in the dining room.

Come here, darling!” replied her mother.Amy came into the dining room to see

her mother and father drinking theirbreakfast tea.

“Mommy, look at my eyes!”“I am dear, they are a beautiful brown

color.”“Mommy, they are not blue! God did

not hear me pray for blue ones last night,”Amy said between sobs.

“Oh baby, come here, it is okay,” saidMrs. Carmichael as she pulled Amy ontoher lap. “Honey, it is not that God didnot hear your prayer. It is just that Hehas something better in mind for youreyes. He wants you to have brown eyesand not blue ones. Do you understandthat, sweetie?”

“Yes, I guess so,” said Amy while wip-ing her eyes with her pudgy little hands.

“Alright now, why don’t you let me help you get dressed and then we will get somebreakfast for you. Okay, darling?”

“Okay, Mommy! Let’s go!“ Amy said with much enthusiasmLittle did Amy know that God really had a reason all along for her brown eyes.

When Amy was an adult, God called her to be a missionary to India. Only then didAmy find out God’s reason for making her with brown eyes. Over in India peoplehave brown eyes. If Amy did not have brown eyes, it would have been harder for herto be accepted by those who she was ministering to. Also, in much of the work shedid, she had to pretend she was an Indian woman. It would have been quite difficultif she had had blue eyes, don’t you think so?

Sometimes you might think that God does not answer your prayers. But whenyou think like that remember Amy’s story and what may lie ahead of you. Godalways answers prayers; it just may not be how you wanted them answered. Godloves you and will always do what is best for you!

Amy Wilson Carmichael (1867-1951)

Amy Carmichael was born in the small village of Millisle, Northern Ireland onDecember 16, 1867 to David and Catherine Carmichael. She was the oldest ofseven children. When Amy was eighteen, her father went to be with the Lord.Amy started a Sunday morning class for the girls that worked in the Mills; theycalled themselves “shawlies” because the girls would wear shawls instead of hats.Amy Carmichael’s ministry with the “shawlies” grew until they need a place toseat 500 when they had meetings.

In 1887, at the Keswick Convention, Amy heard Hudson Taylor talk aboutmissionary life. It was then that Amy knew she wasgoing to be a missionary. After doing mission workin Japan for about fifteen months, she found that hercalling was to be a missionary to India where sheworked with many girls and young ladies.

Amy suffered with neuralgia, a disease which af-fects the nervous system and causes the body to beweak and achy and can keep the victim in bed forweeks. Even though she suffered with neuralgia, itdid not keep her from ministering God’s message tothose who wanted to hear. Amy died in India onJanuary 18, 1951 when she was 83 years old. Herwork inspired many missionaries such as Jim Elliotand his wife Elizabeth.
