Issue No. 2 – 23 February 2021 From the Principal Thank you! I would like to sincerely thank all our families for the positive way everyone embraced the news of a snap lock down on Friday 12 February. I speak for the staff as a whole when I say how touched we were with your understanding that things might not work smoothly for the three days but the most important comment was the one from several parents saying, ‘Don’t worry. We’ve got this. We can do this!’ Never a truer word was spoken. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such an incredible community. I feel we are building something really special and not just because of the beautiful modern new facilities we now have, but because of the way we have all worked together for the good of all our students throughout all the ups and downs which have come our way because of COVID19. I feel if we can continue to do this, our students will not only be okay, they will thrive and be able to be the best versions of themselves. I read an interesting editorial during the week by Adam Voight. In a nutshell, Adam spoke about the valuable lessons children have learnt throughout the pandemic and many of those lessons have centred around how adults have handled themselves during times of stress and the willingness of people to come together and look out for each other. He said children are always watching adults to see how we handle challenges. When children see us working together in a calm and positive way it helps them to learn valuable life long lessons about the importance of teamwork and actually helps them to develop confidence and resilience that we can get through challenging times. Let’s all keep making the children of our community our priority by being the best version of ourselves and keep working together so our LEPS family can thrive! Issue No. 2 – 23 February 2021   From the Principal

Thank you! We can do this!’

Never a truer word was spoken.

School uniform update . . .  Thank you everyone for your patience with the delay                 in the arrival of the new polos. I heard late Friday                     afternoon that the polos are now available for               purchase from LOWES at Plenty Valley. Staff from               LOWES will be contacting families who preordered the               polos to let them know they are ready for collection.

A reminder to all families that our predominant               uniform colour is black and not navy. Please make                 sure you are purchasing black track pants, shorts or                 dresses and not navy as navy is not our school                   uniform colour.

We will have a ‘grace period’ this term but our                   expectation is that if families have transitioned to the                 new uniform, it needs to be the correct colour with no                     logos.

As a SunSmart school, our expectation is that               students wear a broad brimmed school hat, not a cap                   or bucket hat as these do not provide adequate                 protections for students’ delicate skin from the             damages of the sun’s rays. The new black hats can be                     purchased at LOWES. The school still has a supply of                   the green broad brimmed hats which can be               purchased at the office

2021 School Leaders One thing we have really missed over the last year is                     being able to hold our regular assembly and have our                   families attend and enjoy the special times together.               Unfortunately, we are still not allowed to do this yet,

but hopefully we will be able to go back to our regular                       assembly before the end of the year. However,               Monday’s assembly was a special one for us as it was                     the first one we have been able to hold with all our                       students in the one location since term 1 last year. To                     celebrate the presentation of the badges to our               student leaders we held the assembly in our               courtyard space so we could all be together while the                   leaders were being presented with their badges.

Congratulations to the following students:

Junior School Council: Mia, Margret, Noor,           Nesreen, Bradley, Ben, Tala, Janna, Liam, Jayden,             Clement & Milos

2021 Staffing Best wishes to Brad Jones and his wife Lydia who are                     expecting their first child in the next week or so. Brad                     will be taking some leave from Friday 26 February so                   he can enjoy this special time in his life. We will keep                       you updated once the baby arrives. Brad’s position will be covered by Trent Ryan, who                 you will remember from when he worked with us in                   2019 in the 1-2 team. Trent has been spending time in                     the Pre-2 team over the last week so the students                   have a chance to get to know him before Brad goes                     on his paternity leave.

School Camp Our 5/6s had an incredible time at Lady Northcote                 camp near Bacchus Marsh. For twenty one of our                 forty six campers, this was their first time away from

home and I am pretty confident, they weren’t               disappointed with their time away. Students had fun               challenging themselves on the giant swing and flying               fox, completing the orienteering course, building huts,             cooling down in the pool and battling it out in the                     ‘Toon Challenge’. The food was delicious and the               company was lots of fun. Hopefully your children               remembered to show gratitude to you for the               sacrifices you made as a family to make it possible for                     them to have this memorable experience.

Thank you to Amanda Eisendel, Adrian Parisi , Dean                 Sharples and Hannah Sutherland for their           commitment to our school camping program and             attending camp. Thanks to Ruthi Aitken for             coordinating this event for us.

I have included some photos from our fun time at                   camp in this week’s Jumbunna.

School Council Elections

One of the important ways parents can support the                 school is to nominate to be part of the School Council.                     Our School Council is made up of a mix of parents                     and staff. The term of office is usually two years with                     half the positions on the School Council up for                 election each year.

We meet at the school 10 times a year, during term                     time. Meetings normally start around 6:30pm and             conclude by 8:00pm at the latest.

Elections are held at this time of the year. Parents can                     self-nominate by completing the form available at the               office if you are interested in joining our School                 Council. Nominations close on 23 February at 4pm.

We will also be looking for parents and community                 members to support our different committees           including the Fundraising Committee. This group is             responsible for organising the Mother’s Day and             Father’s Day stalls, Easter and Christmas raffles and               any other fundraising events. We need a strong               committee this year since we weren’t able to run our                   usual events last year due to COVID. There are still                   lots of things we need money for to really finish off                     our lovely new school so call in at the office if you are                         interested in joining the Fundraising Committee.

Office News Office hours 8:30am - 4:00pm

Change of Details Please let the office know promptly if you have changed your address, phone numbers, work details or emergency contact numbers.

Spare Uniform Please consider putting extra clothes in your child’s bag in case of any accidents that might occur during the day as we do not supply a change of clothes.

Hats & Bags As a ‘SUNSMART SCHOOL’ we need to ensure we wear hats from the middle of August until 30 April. Hats are available for purchase at the office for $16.00.

LEPS school bags can also be purchased from the office for only $10.00.

Student Asthma Medication Students who require Asthma Medication during school hours need to supply their own individual Ventolin or Becotide puffers.

Individual Spacers must also be provided for administering the medication. The items ALL need to be named and will be stored in the sick bay.

It is a directive from the Department of School Education that students must supply their own medication and equipment.

If you require an asthma action plan please see the office staff.

Early pickups We understand that at times children need to be                 collected early to attend medical appointments. This is               not something which should be occurring every day or                 more than once a week just because it is convenient                   with regards to collecting older children from secondary               school.

If children are collected an hour early each day, it adds                     up to 5 hours of learning lost each week or the                     equivalent of a day’s learning each week. If these 5                   hours are multiplied out over the course of the term                   and the year, it adds up to 50 hours/term or 10                     days/term learning time. That is a LOT of lost learning                   time!

We need all children at school for the full day so we can                         maximise their learning time.

Please use our value of cooperation and make as many                   appointments as possible outside school hours or             during holiday periods so we can reduce the amount of                   learning time lost.

Ask secondary school students to meet you at a                 designated meeting spot halfway between our schools             rather than taking primary school students out of               school earlier.

Ask yourself . . .

Can my child really afford to lose 200 hours or 40 days a year from their learning time?

Breakfast Club Breakfast Club is open every morning to students from 8.30 am. In the Multi Purpose Centre.

Students are able to receive a FREE breakfast of toast, cereal and fruit before they begin their busy day of learning.

Students can enter the school grounds to visit Breakfast Club through the gate beside OHSC.

Breakfast Club would like to acknowledge the continuing support from Foodbank Victoria, Bakers Delight Mernda Village, Christina Bakery and Semper Dental.

Wow! This is going to be a fantastic week at OSHC. We are going under the sea to                                   explore, decorate and be fascinated by the magical world of fish, octopi and other                           fantastic sea creatures. Our chef hats will be firmly placed on our heads, as we will be                                 cooking delicious muffins, pancakes and cheese toasties. Of course, the children and I                         often do spontaneous and creative child-based activities, role play, and adventures. It’s                       always a fun experience at OSHC.

Last week the children were master builders as we turned the OSHC room into a cubby                               house. We role played schools, and read stories to each other. We even created our own                               scratch art- what an amazing idea Annabelle. Clement, our incredible architect, created a                         floor plan of the OSHC room using Google Slides. Awesome effort! We even had a                             costume party in the morning.

This tip sheet has been designed to support and guide parents/guardians on how to access their child’s learning tasks each term using the Compass app.   Learning tasks allow teachers to report on your child’s performance progressively during the term/semester instead of at the end of each semester in a formal report. Learning tasks will be sent through to parents every 2/3 weeks depending on the areas of curriculum which have been taught.  Parents have access to view completed learning tasks during terms 1, 2, 3 and 4.   How to view your child’s learning task using the Compass app:

1. To view your child’s learning task log onto Compass. If you are unsure on your login in details, please contact the school office during school hours on 9465 4350

 2. From the Compass ‘HOME’ screen select your child’s photograph in the top left hand corner of the screen

(as shown below).

3. At the top of the screen you will see the word ‘Tasks’. Click on the word ‘Tasks’ (as shown below).      Depending on your child's grade/year level, you will see one of the following
