Want a great opportunity to network? “ A Joint Meeting with APICS and SLMBC”
by Patrick Williamson, C.P.M.
On February 22, 2011, at the Spazio’s catering facility we are pleased to bring back Ernie Goss as our featured speaker. In past meetings he has brought lively and thought provoking messages to us and I am sure this year will be no exception. Registration begins at 5:00 p.m. and we will have 2 pre-dinner presenta-tions (overviews on the benefits of both APICS and ISM membership) starting at 5:30 p.m. We will be joined by APICS and the Saint Louis Minority Business Council (SLMBC). The evening promises to be a great op-portunity to network and meet colleagues. See you there! Ernie Goss is currently the McAllister Chair and Professor of Economics at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Tennessee in 1983. He was a visiting scholar with the Congressional Budget Office for 2003-04. In the fall of 2005, the Nebraska Attorney General appointed Goss to head a task force examining gasoline pricing in the state. He is also a past faculty research fellow with the National Aeronautics and Space administration (NASA). He has published over eighty research studies focusing primarily on economic forecasting and on the statistical analysis of business and economic data. His book, Changing Attitudes toward Economic Reform during the Yeltsin Era was published by Praeger Press in 2003 and his book Governing Fortune: Casino Gambling in America was published by the University of Michigan Press in 2007. Ernie is the editor of Economic Trends, an economics newsletter published three times per year. He is the past president of the Omaha Association of Business Economics, and the National Purchasing Manage-ment Association-Nebraska. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Mosaic, Inc. To gauge regional economic conditions, Goss conducts a monthly survey of supply managers in 9 states, including Missouri, and a survey of bank CEOs in 11 states. Results from the two surveys are carried in over 100 newspapers, 20-30 radio stations and scores of other media outlets each month. Recent citations appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Forbes, and scores of regional newspapers such as the Denver Post, the Kansas City Star and the Minneapolis Pioneer. Once again we hope to see you at the meeting!
As ISM-St. Louis ex-pands its membership, your toolkit of supply chain contacts, re-sources, experience da-tabase, and knowledge also expands. With each new member, our organization ex-pands in supply chain depth and breadth. Because of this, we’ve devised a way for you to
help you and your fellow members expand their tool-kits and for you to gain re-wards at the same time . . . we’ve established a “Member Get a Member” program. This program will reward you for sharing your views of ISM-St. Louis with others and getting them to join as a member. Watch for more details on this program, as they will be emailed to you shortly.

Six-Month Financial Report
by Max Merx, C.P.M. Director fo Finance
This month I thought I would provide a quick summary of our finances, no graphs or charts. Net Income (Loss) (3,585.74) Budgeted Income (Loss) (823.04) Over Budget (2,762.70) This loss is due to our revenue stream being tilted toward the end of our fiscal, May and June, when membership renewals occur. Expenses are well within budget. Our December 31, 2010 Balance Sheet is up slightly compared to December 31, 2009. Dec 31, 2010 Dec 31, 2009 Change Edward Jones $99,309.12 $97,200.99 $2,108.13 US Bank Checking 51,982.68 53,387.52 (1,404.84) Total Assets $151,291.80 $150,588.51 $703.29 Again, our checking account is down due to the placement of our revenue stream. However, it is good to note that our investment gains more than offset the changes to the checking account. If you have particular questions regarding our organizational finances, send me an email. If anyone has topics that they would like discussed in this section, feel free to submit them. Director of Finance Max Merz, C.P.M. [email protected]

Weighing on the Banks
The Massachusetts State Supreme Judicial Court upheld a decision that two foreclosures from U.S. Bancorp and Wells Fargo were inva-lid because the banks failed to show they held the mortgages at the time of the foreclosure. Courts are going to delay the rebound of the residential housing markets. BANKER READING ROOM

For the month of December 2010, reported January 3, 2011 Missouri: For the 18th straight month, Missouri’s Business Condi-tions Index climbed above growth neutral. The index, based on a survey of supply managers, grew to 57.4 from 56.6 in November. Components of the overall index from the December survey were new orders at 55.6, production or sales at 58.0, delivery lead time at 61.4, inventories at 58.7 and employment at 53.2. “Missouri continued to lose manufacturing jobs in 2010, albeit at a slow pace. Transportation equipment manufacturing and firms tied to this in-dustry continue to expand output without increasing employment. Based on our survey results over the past several months, I expect job growth to be very modest for the first half of 2011 with gains of less than one-half of one percent (annualized),” said Goss.
Borrowing Up Americans increased the amount of money they borrowed in November, mostly to buy cars and attend col-lege. Households have been borrowing less and saving more since the recession began in December 2007. This has been a major factor holding back overall economic growth because it has dampened consumer spending.
Indexes Up The national ISM index and our regional ISM index both rose for December pointing to positive growth in the months ahead. Unemployment Claims Fell A week ago, initial claims for unemployment benefits fell under 400,000 for the first time since July 2008. Auto Sales Up Automakers reported December new U.S. light-vehicle sales on Tuesday that were the best monthly results of 2010
ISM Readings: On Feb. 1, the Institute for Supply Management and Creighton University release their eco-nomic reports for the nation and region, respectively, for the month of January. Another increase in the overall index will be very favorable for stocks. Also keep an eye on the em-ployment reading.
CPI: On Feb. 17, the BLS releases the consumer
price index for January. A large increase in the inflation gauge will put downward pressures on bond prices and up-ward pressures on interest rates.
Trade: On Feb. 11, the BEA releases trade num-
bers for December. A smaller deficit (less than $33 billion) combined with a large increase in exports (over $162 billion) will be bullish for stocks and bearish for bonds.
Jobs: On Feb. 4, the U.S. BLS will release the em-
ployment report for January. Another negative report (new jobs less than 120,000) will be bearish for stock prices but push interest rates lower.
