A Single-minded EffortGoddard Lieberson, president of Columbia
Records, commented recently that in terms ofprofit, talent development and exposure, singlesare vital to the record industry. What Mr. Lieber -son says makes good sense. The record manufac-turer therefore, can ill afford to overlook any op-portunity for investment in the singles field thesedays. All too often, manufacturers fail to cash inon situations which might have resulted in lucra-tive returns with some added probing. For in-stance, the area of show tunes is one which mightbe more carefully investigated to everyone's benefit.
Though musicals have certainly spelled profitsfor the album market, this source of profits is notbeing utilized to its fullest potential in the singlesfield. In recent years, only a modest number ofsingles from shows have become chart -makers.Certainly, with some of the nation's best song-
writing talent pouring their efforts into this medi-um, more than just a handful of songs should betransformed into pop singles hits.
We therefore find Frank Music's present ex-ploitation of "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," wel-come news. No song from the musical will beaired in public until three weeks after the openingof the show. Capitol Records which cut the originalcast album, has graciously agreed to this proposal.Proponents of the idea contend that it will offerconcentrated promotion of the songs in the show-with all the discs hitting the public on one day.
They further hold that under this system, labelswill not have to rush into waxing singles of ashow until after the critics have reviewed it. Amanufacturer would consequently be protectedagainst pouring money into a single from a musical, only to have the show fold on him. The system'sproponents also maintain that small labels wouldbe more willing to cut a single from a show ifthey knew that they could at least get off to aneven start with larger firms.
Certainly, the results of this "concentrated pro-motion" are by no means assured. The outcomewill not be decided until well after the releasedate, Nov. 21. More important than the outcomehowever, is the fact that the music industry hasonce again recognized that innovation, blendedwith an ounce of extra effort, and effective pro-motion can lead to new avenues for record sales.

`Pulse' Survey FindsCountry Music Strong
A nationwide "Pulse" Survey has indi-cated that almost 20 per cent of thecountry's music listeners are confirmed C&Wfans. '1 he survey-released last week-is oneof the most intensive studies of countrymusic ever undertaken.
Results of the survey were announced byDr. Sydney Roslow, director of "Pulse," ata luncheon at the Savoy -Hilton Hotel inNew York, sponsored by the Charles Ber-nard Company.
The study found that: 18.2 per cent ofthe interviewees listened exclusively to C& W music; an additional 6.2 per cent list-ened to both country and other types ofmusic; 43.3 per cent did not listen to C &W tunes, and the rest had no particularpreference.
A total of 11,000 people were interviewedin 18 metropolitan markets from coast tocoast. No one was surprised that the areawith the greatest C & W penetration wasNashville with country -music fan account-ing for 55 per cent of those polled. Otherareas where at least one -fifth of those in-terviewed claimed to be country -music fansare: Augusta, Ga., 30.7 per cent; Denver,22 per cent; Charlotte, N. C., and San Ber-nardino, Cal., 21.3 per cent; and Memphis,20 per cent.
Areas with the least country music activ-ity according to the survey are Miami, Balti-
more and Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Roslow pointedout however, that this might be deceiving. He noted that Baltimore, which only had acountry -penetration of 9.3 per cent, had anestimated 44,800 homes listening to C & Wmusic. "It can be seen in this case," he said,"that though the percentage of country lis-teners is small, the large population bringsthe actual number of country listeners upto a considerable sum."
"Pulse" used two criteria in determiningwho qualified as a country listener. Theywere: the type of music and musical pro-grams the individual listened to over theradio, and the person's favorite singers. Theinterviewees were given a list of 12 typesof music and 15 singers to choose from. Thelist included 5 types of C & W music andprograms, and seven country singers.
In order to qualify as a country listener, the interviewees had to pick three of thesefrom both categories.
.The survey only confirmed what manymen in the music industry already knew-that country fans compose a powerful seg-ment of the music -listening public. Not onlyhave country songs cracked the pop chartsin their own right, but they have recentlywielded a powerful influence on the typeof pop tunes that are being written-andsold-these days.

ARMADA Weighs Plans
For All -Purpose ParleyThe American Record Manufacturers and
Distributors Association is weighing plansto hold a five-day convention next Junewhich would also give manufacturers theopportunity to unveil their Fall lines todistributors. The merits of this idea werediscussed at a recent meeting held in New"York by ARMADA's executive board.
Art Talmadge, the organization's presi-dent described the present diskery con-vention set-up as "time consuming.""During the summer months," he said,"manufacturers hold individual conventionsthroughout the United States, while dis-tributors run from one meeting to another, spending as much as a week with each firm. This involves a loss of time to distributors, and is extremely costly both to them andto manufacturers."
Talmadge suggested that ARMADA holdthe business part of its convention on thefirst day or two of a week in June, allow-ing manufacturers to use the remainingthree or four days to introduce their fallproduct in exhibit halls in the hotel.
"This would make it possible for a dis-tributor to see several of his manufacturersat one convention, and smaller labels, whichcannot afford a convention of their own, could stage displays at the ARMADA meet-ing," Talmadge said.
The ARMADA board is now sounding itsmembers to learn their feelings concerningthis proposal. If a majority concurs, a fiveor six -day convention in late June will beplanned, and a site for the convention willbe sought.
One local exec took exception to the sug-gestion noting that many labels are notprepared to introduce their fall line untilAugust. He also noted that such a conven-tion would not greatly help distributors whodeal with both member -labels of ARMADAand the Record Industry Association ofAmerica.

Nostalgia ProgrammingClicks for Stations
A networkful of radio stations have sud-denly hopped aboard the nostalgia band-wagon in record programming, a movewhich is certainly paying off in listener re-sponse.
The formula most often followed by sta-tions strolling down memory lane involvesconcentrating on nothing but old favorites

during a short period of time, usually fromone to three days.
Stations try to schedule their memorymusic for weekends when more adults arebelieved to be listening. Some of the mostsuccessful nostalgia -programming occurs onholiday weekends. KXOK-St. Louis was sopleased with the success of its Labor -Dayoffering of all-time tunes, that it has ar-ranged another harvest of hits for theThanksgiving weekend.
Another gambit is to focus on songs froma specific era. KISN-Portland received thou-sands of calls applauding its KISN Klassicsseries, which recalled record hits duringthe last six years.
On the other hand, KROD-El Paso, re-cently mixed it up and brought everyoneinto the act by sandwiching Glen Miller's"Pennsylvania 6-5000," between Elvis'"Hound Dog," and Fats Domino's "Don'tBlame It On Me."

New England Notes
by ED PENNEY
Mel Miller, the man who moved WMEX,Boston, from the bottom to the top, has de-cided to move bag, baggage, bride andbabies to Canada and CKEY, Toronto .. .
farewell and fondest wishes go from thisdepartment to Melvin, a good friend anda good music man . . . Eddy Arnold, oneof the few country artists who can scoreon pop charts, has come up with a bigone on RCA with "Before This Day Ends".
The newest movie theme to hit this mar-ket with lotsa versions is "Midnight Lace"from the latest Doris Day flick ... too manyrenditions to name a top -runner yet, thoughthe melody sounds like a sure one ...WCOP, Boston, has proved its effective-ness through advertising a non -existing"Robinsphere," (an all -functioning do -allthat nothing most "efficientially" withmany calls not only from listeners who won-der, but from dealers who have had actualretail calls ...
Look out for Bobby Beck's ABC recordof "The Door is Always Open" . . . thiscould be a big one . . . Herald Recordshas come up with a sure "double-header"in the Maurice Williams waxing of "Stay,"and "Kidstuff" by The Mellokings ... JoeThomas, big man at WPAW, Providence, proved it with over 4,000 turning out for arecent Chamber of Commerce sponsoredrecord hop ... Jockeys looking for some-thing "off -beat but commercial" are play-ing "Sailor" by Lolita .
WHIL, Boston, though a day -timer,proves it can compete with the full-timestations by being completely sold -out com-mercially and getting over 5,000 requestsfor membership in its newly -organized "Ti-ger" club ... Morty Wax called to men-tion a new album by Beverly Brooks on theDora label and we found his promotionalnetwork is now handling the future Colpixsingles . . . Mike Norton has moved fromWPOR to WGAN TV in Maine as sportsdirector . . . Don Gordon, WPOR, has
taken a hiatus for more book -stuff at Emer-son College ..
Jack Scott scores again with "Patsy" forTop Rank ... I'm still convinced the Delrayshave a sleeper with "Let's Stay Together"on Columbia ... Buddy Greco can't misswith his Epic revival of "Ooh, Looka thereAint She Pretty" ... WMEX made a pickout of "Shining Star" by The Chaperoneson Josie ... Nice turnout for the dee-jaypreview of "Song Without End" last Wed-nesday ... The next big Boston hit is "To-night's the Night" by The Chiffons on BigDeal ... Hottest label in Boston is Libertywith seven entries on most charts and sixmore ready to move in ... how major canyou be?

The newest idol for
STARSON THE
RISE
Bobby Vee
America's teenagersis a seventeen -year -old, slim, hazel -eyedsinger named Bobby Vee, one of the young-est performers on the Liberty Records' la-bel. He is also one of their most promising, according to Liberty president, Al Bennett, who predicts a tremendous future for thelad.
Bennett bases his prediction, in part atleast, on the fabulous response to the youth-ful balladeer's newest single disc, "Devil orAngel," which has been hitting America'srecord charts with the same consistency thatMickey Mantle knocks out homers.
Audience responses to the youngster inhis numerous concert and club datesthroughout the country provide additionalevidence that this newcomer has a spectacu-lar appeal for the fans, especially those ofthe feminine variety.
Vee was discovered by Liberty only lastyear when he recorded on a small label outof Minneapolis a song called "Suzie Baby."The company bought the master and Veewas on his way since the response to thisinitial release was immediate and enthusi-astic. It grew with the release of his nextrecord "One Last Kiss." His latest, "Devilor Angel," is certain, according to Bennett,to outsell both his previous releases andLiberty currently has a full scale BobbyVee LP in preparation.
At 17 he is a little overwhelmed at therate of speed that his career is moving. Heis unaffected, serious about his music anddetermined to make music his life's work.
New Book OutOn CopyrightEN A new book by Stanley Rothenberg-former copyright attorney for Warner Bros.,and Columbia-may find a receptive market
among song publishers and labels who havebecome so concerned with property rightsin creative material recently. The book iscalled "Legal Protection of Literature, Artand Music."
Young Disc TalentGains TV Exposure
Young disc artists will receive a greaterchance to appear before the television pub-lic starting Oct. 15, when NBC-TV beginsits "NBC Saturday Prom."
Until now, new vocalists received net-work TV exposure only on the Dick ClarkShow-aside from infrequent appearanceson variety revues. "Prom" will depart fromthe Clark format by presenting live per-formances by the singers.
Several top names among the industry'syoung vocalists have indicated that theywill appear on the show, including FrankieAvalon, Fabian, Conway Twitty, BrianHyland, Bobby Rydell, and Chubby Check-er. The show will host 500 teenagers froma different high school every week.
'Payola' In Printgi The word "payola" has finally come ofage-it has found its way into paperbackbooks. "Payola Woman" is the title of anew shocker purporting to expose vices inthe music trade. The heroine is an amorouslass who gives her favors to an A & R manand winds up owning the label. Just like inreal life.
