Corrado Manciol i -- Des igner of Sport Stamps by Dino Pla tone

and edited by: Joe Schirmer, Associa te Editor

Introduction: Due to the extreme length of the original article entitled "An Exceptional Documentation; Sketches; Studies; Essays; & Proofs of Corrado Mancioli", Which was published in the April 1976 edition of ll Nvovo Corriere Filatelico, and the large amount of technical date and artistic problems discussed; which were of no interest to the Olympic & Sports collector or the SPI membership. It was decided to retain only the data that pertained to sports and Olympic stamps i.: hich we feel will be of more benefit to our membership. I wish to thank my good friend Bro. Camillus Casey, OSF of St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY who did the major translation of the original article. The original theme of the article is maintained wherever possible, except where in the interests of clarity and continuity, your editor took the liberty and re-wrote accordingly.

Corrado Mancioli who was born on the 23rd of June 1904 of Italian parents , managed in a short 13 years; to create 300 des igns for which 332 stamps were printed for the Italian Pos ta l Authorities, the Republic of San Marino and Somalia. When he died on Sept. 20, 1968, he had made 2 des igns for the 1968 World Cycling Races , but he died never knowing that the government of San Marino would not use his des igns .

Mancioli who started life as a civil engineer and worked in this field until 1930 when he real ized that there was l i t t le money to be earned in this field. So he turned to art and designing. Even with this late start in the complicated field of arts and design, he made a last ing impression on the philatel ic productions of the Italian countr ies . In a bit over 10 years Mancioli managed to make 131 des igns for 152 stamps for San Marino, and for 10 years was the "o f f i c i a l " designed for Somalia for whom he created 139 designs for 147 stamps. For his native Italy, he created but 30 des igns for 33 stamps. When Mancioli started to design in 1930 he entered the field by designing sports pos ters for CONI, and in a short time, added, medals , diplomas and badges all for CONI.

The majority of h is des igns were printed by the rotogravure method, but there were a few that were engraved.

Giovanni Vicini, who was the Phi la te l ic Consultant to the Republic of San Marino was visi t ing the well known and st i l l living Italian collector and writer; Guiseppe Sabelli Fioret t i , and happened to see two designs for stamps that Mancioli had left there. And from this simple beginning came one of the most prolific des igners of I talian area stamps in th is century.

Mancioli was a very learned man in the field of art and a very precise worker who designed with precision, c leverness , and with a desi re to have all de ta i l s of h is design perfect. He could often pose in the various sports motions before a large mirror, and then copy the de ta i l s . He had a hugh library of photographs which he kept for studying de ta i l s . He always s t ressed the importance of the inscr ipt ions on stamps, and would spend many hours on th is detai l . Enzo Diena, the famous I tal ian dealer and authority on forgeries (now deceased) once said that Mancioli p o s s e s s e d one of the greatest knowledge of printing and painting that he had ever seen. And the unusual thing that with all h i s knowledge of sports he had a great pass ion for the simple sport of cycling.

His first Olympic design was i s sued on 26 June 1955 by San Marino for the Exhibition of Olympic Stamps and h i s las t design right before he died was i ssued 10 May 1968 for Somalia and cal led "Hunt ing Animals" . Other favorite des igns were his "His tory of Hunt ing" for San Marino and also h i s "Modern Hunting". His las t design for San Marino was the " J o u s t i n g and Tournament" i ssue . It is to be noted that all these s e t s contained 10 s tamps, which in i t s self shows the hard work Mancioli placed into his des igns . He never got over the fact that in the 60 lira stamp of the " J o u s t i n g and Tournament" set , it was discovered that the horses were moving in a different than normal direction. This " t e c h n i c a l " error did upset him, and he was never to forget it.

Mrs. Nella Ghersi, his wife, and two of his c lose friends; Enzo Diena and Sabelli Fioretti were interviewed by Dino Platone before he wrote the original article. In closing, devotion to philately i s shown by a man who loved not only philately but sports; and left with the philatelic world many beautiful designs. He designed many i s sues for the Italian countries and while his sports output did not compare in any manner with his other designs, he was a true sports lover and a man to whom all philately owes a debt of gratitude.

A—42 By kind permission of Minkus Stamp Journal the following information concerning the Dec. 9, 1966 i ssue of Siam (Thailand) national sports (460—63) is extracted from Olga Lindberg 's article "Games of Tha i l and" in vol. 4 No. 3, 1959 of Minkus Stamp Journal:

THAI BOXING is completely different from boxing in other parts of the world. The contes tan ts , dressed in traditional shorts and colored head bands, first offer up prayers to invoke the d ie t ies to render them ass i s t ance . Then each per-formes a s tyl ized dance pantomine to show his individual style, and to str ike fear into the heart of h is opponent. During the main bout the boxers bat t le savagely using f is ts , knees , elbows, feet and heads , and all of th is is accompanied by weird oriental music on a pipe and two long drums. Thai boxing bouts are held several t imes a week in the Rajdamnern and Lumpini stadiums in Bangkok.

TAKRAW is another traditional Thai sport. Played with a ball of woven wicker, woven of 8 or 10 ply rattan and having a circumference of not more than 16 inches and weighs between 150 and 200 grams. The object of the game is to keep the bal l in motion, hit t ing it with any part of the body - the instep, heel , knee, shoulder, forearm or head, but not with the hands. When the hands touch the ball it i s " d e a d " . A popular variation of the game is cal led "Hoop Takrow" in which a team of seven men stand in a circle and try to gain a high score by hitt ing the bal l through a suspended hoop. This i s similar to basketbal l except the hoop is sus pended vertically. Another variation is cal led "Ne t Takraw", played by opposing teams over a net similar to Badminton. School children play Tarrow, univers i t ies and col leges hold Takraw tournaments but the most popular contes t s are held on the Pramane Ground, an open meadow in the center of Bangkok near the Royal P a l a c e grounds.

In KITE FLYING there are two bas ic s ty les of k i tes - the Chula, or male kite which is sturdily constructed of thin paper s tretched on a heavy bamboo frame. It is large and resembles a star in shape, and often is elaborately decorated. The Pakpao, or female kite, is smaller and shaped like a diamond, with a long, starched white-cloth tai l . The male kite is equipped with barbs with which to snag the fragile Pakpao and haul her to the ground. The Pakpao is i s decept ively dainty. It carr ies a loop with which she attempts to ensnare the Chula and in the hands of a skillful flyer this tiny kite has great agility, and is a dangerous adversary. Sometimes the str ings of the k i tes are rubbed with glue and ground g l a s s , and then the object is to cut the opponen t ' s kite string in the air. Kite flying requires end less pract ice , skill and strength.

POLE FIGHTING, OR CUDGEL PLAY, in which the contes tants use a long pole vs . a short pole, is another ancient sport originating in early t imes when soldiers fought with pole or spear. Although not as popular as they once were, con tes t s are s t i l l held in many vi l lages in Thailand and are popular at fairs, fes t iva ls and celebrat ions .

Q—47 Were there any handstamps or phi la te l ic material commemorating the 1948 London and 1952 Helsinki Olympic Torch Relay from Olympia, Greece to the s i t e s of the Games? 28

OLYMPIC S P E C I A L T I E S FROM MONTREAL

by Sherwin Podolsky, Associate Editor

The registered cover was sent to me from one of the Olympic posta l venues at Montreal. Note the Olympic cancel la t ion for a th le t ics and also the registry hand-stamp incorporating the Montreal Olympic symbol. My cover was No. 80 out of 90 serviced at this particular post office. The Canadian markings are in black.

The reverse side shows the Montreal post off ice"Lieu 6 Venue" handcancels but there is no Olympic symbol therein.

The vignette was supplied by SPI member Joe Lacko and is in red. I am unable to verify that it is on self-stick gummed paper or is an adhesive. I hes i ta te to soak it to find out so my copy is on a p iece of envelope.

How about one of our Canadian members providiig us with information and pic tures of the philatel ic items not available through the phi latel ic agency?. The registry services and markings need some explaining. What is the story behind the vignette and can further copies be obtained?

PARACHUTING & THE OLYMPIC GAMES

by Joe Schirmer, Associate Editor

Recently it has come to my attention that a rather unusal piece ex is t s for the Olympic Games, but the question is; which year?? This cachet , limited to a quantity of 475 p ieces , was sent from an airport in Rome and contains the cancellation of the Aeroporto Urbe-D on August 31, 1974, and delivered to the Olympic Stadium by hel icopter and parachutists on 9 Sept. 1974- Incidentily, this parachute team was the world precision parachuting team of Italy.

On the back of the cover there is a cancel la t ion of the Olympic Village and on the front of the cover there is an outline of a parachute with the wording: XI CAMPIONATI DI ATLETICA LEGGERA POSTA TRANSPORTA DA PARA-CHDUTISTI".

Now, who can supply a photo of this interest ing cover? Who can answer as to why 1974? What Olympic Stadium received it? Who originated this unique item? What purpost did it serve and why was it i ssued?

Over the years I have worked closely with Madame Monique Berlioux whom for many years is the "major domo" of the offices of the International Olympic Committee. But what 1 think that most people do not know, is that Madame Berlioux has written a very fine book about the Olympic Games. While it is not a phi la te l ic writing, it is most accurate with i ts h is tor ies of the various Games and the a s soc iated records. It can give much excellant background material for the collector who is either doing research or writing-up a collection. While written in French, I found that with my "h igh school F r e n c h " and a dictionary, I was able to read it easi ly. Publ ished by Flammarion of Par i s , France and se l l s for about $10.

COMMEMORATIVE DATESTAMPS OF JAPAN'S TWENTY-SIXTH NATIONAL

ATHLETIC MEET IN WAKAYAMA PREFECTURE, OCTOBER 1971

by Dr. Felix D. Bertalanffy, Winnipeg, Canada

J a p a n ' s annual National Athletic Meets, well known to the thematic sports ph i la te l i s t s from the superbly executed yearly stamp i s s u e s , were the direct outcome of the former Meiji Shrine Athletic Meets, first staged in 1924 at the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo. Athletes from throughout Japan participated at these athletic meets, conducted yearly at the same s i t e s in the Outer Gardens of the shrine. During the Pacif ic War most such events were discontinued. After i ts conclusion it was decided to conduct the athlet ic contes ts no longer at that same location but rather to s tage them each year in another region, or prefecture, of Japan. Accordingly, the various events of the Fi rs t National Athletic Meet were held in 1946 in c i t ies and towns of the Osaka and Kyoto Prefectures; that meet was not commemorated by special s tamps. J a p a n ' s first athlet ic meet stamps (397—400) commemorated the Second Athletic Meet, however, held at Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, in 1947. Since that year J a p a n ' s P o s t a l Ministry issued annually a set of stamps celebrat ing the yearly National Athletic Meets, composed at first of four, later of five, then of two, and s ince 1966 of a single stamp variety. Inasmuch as almost all special stamp i s s u e s of Japan, s ince 1906, were accompanied on the day of emission by specia l usually pictorial datestamps, all National Athletic Meet stamp i s sues were l ikewise graced with a large (36mm) commemorative cancel . Yet, apart from the latter, an ever augmenting number of small commemorative date-stamps (32mm) have been employed, deriving chiefly from post offices located in particular city sec t ions or tows in that prefecture where certain components of the athlet ic meet were being staged. The various kinds of sports were usual ly expressed graphically in the des igns of those cancels , frequently in combination with some typical feature of the particular locality.

The commemorative da tes tamps employed during the 24th National Athletic Meet staged in October 1969 in Nagasaki Prefecture, were superbly presented by Hinoki and Turner in the November-December 1971 issue of the Journal of Sports Philately. The present account is a comparable compilation of the specia l postmarks celebrating the 26th National Athletic Meet in Wakayama Prefecture, October 24—29, 1971- A single large and 31 small commemorative dates tamps were employed at that event, 30 of the latter bestowing honor on almost any type of sport there was competed. A seemingly complicating factor with the present ser ies of postal markings, as compared to that of 1969 when all of them originated in Nagasaki , is the circumstance that the 1971 National Athletic Meet was scat tered over numerous c i t i e s and tows in Wakayama Prefecture, and hence the cance ls derived from different post offices. Consequently, the following descript ive compilation maintains the sequence: sports category, name of post office (indicated in Chinese kanji, or as an exception in hiragana in Fig. 30. in the south sector of the cancels beneath the date), and a brief indication of the cance l ' s typical des igns . They are all dated October 25th, the actual day of the commencement of the tournaments, apart from the large datestamp (Fig. 1) dated October 24th, the day of re lease of the 1971 National Athletic Meet stamp.

Japanese Postmark Sources: It might be of interest to some readers citing sources of J apanese specia l postmarks. FDC ' s in general, bearing all types of pictorial and commercial cance l la t ions , can be obtained on a standing order ba s i s from the Japan Stamp Publ ic i ty Associat ion, P.O. Box 5, Azabu, Tokyo 106- They do not supply thematic se lec t ions , however. Acquisition of such se lec t ions might be more feasible from Mr. F . J. Hermann, P.O. Box 327, Annandale. VA 22003. The set of postmarks descr ibed herewith was supplied by Mr. H Tsuge , Box 2, Hirakata, Osaka-fu 573, Japan. Most likely, Mr. Tsuge and Mr. Hermann would accept specia l orders by sports ph i la te l i s t s . Be certain to promote your society by mentioning the Journal of Sports Philately in all le t ters of inquiry to these sources.

Olympic Tickets The Ticket Committee of the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee

(LPOOC) is working carefully to evolve a definite ticket policy for the 1980 Winter Games. However, it is not contemplated that the ticket policy will be developed until early 1978 and it will probably be early or mid 1979 before there are any sale of t ickets .

The LPOOC s t r e s s e s the fact that under no circumstances should anyone pay for t icket appl icat ions or information to any private individual or agency.

Persons interested in ticket information may write to the LPOOC (Box 1980, Lake Plac id , N Y . 12946) whose members are endeavoring to cooperate with the public by compiling a list of those persons who are interested in ticket information. Those people on the list will be notified when the ticket policy is es tabl ished.

lJg President's Message

A big welcome to Margaret A. Jones , from Atlanta, GA, to the working group of SPI. Margaret will be handling the membership recruiting effective immediately. A very special thanks to Helen Long who devoted many years to this very necessary task.

Sherwin Podolsky has proposed a cachet ser ies based on "Great Events in the Olympic Games" . The general idea would be such as Spiridon Louis winning the 1896 Marathon Race for Greece, Dorando's spectacular win in 1908 etc. The format would be a photo in the upper half of the cachet and a detai led paragraph in small print with information on the bottom.

This i s a club project and members are asked to submit photos and a detai led write-up on their favorite Olympic Event. If a postcard or photo is sent, we will

ANOTHER OLYMPIC VARIETY by Joe Schirmer, Associate Editor

Variet ies on the US Olympic stamps seem to be more plentiful than on the Olympic i s s u e s of foreign countries. P. J. Drossos of Athens, Greece reports a rather interest ing variety on the Greece 1968 Olympic stamp, Scott 934.

This 10 drachma stamp shows Pindar and his Olympic Ode. On the fifth line of the Ode, the hyphen is missing after the word TEKMAIPO (--)...this variety occurs in the 5 stamps of the vert ical row, containing the stamps 9, 19, 29, 39 & 49 in the sheet of 50 stamps. A total of 709,000 copies of this stamp were printed.
