He was young and from a high social class. He lived in London and wore expensive,

traditional clothes and spoke with an upper class accent.

Often referred to as a ‘Ra Ra Rupert’ or ‘Hooray Henry’, the Sloane Ranger behaved

in accordance with a strict set of social guidelines.

Princess Diana was his archetype and a Super Sloane heroine of the 1980’s.

The Sloane Ranger believed in patriotism and traditionalism, and in the values of upper class and upper middle-class culture. They had confidence in themselves and their given places in the world and a fondness for life in the countryside.

In 2006 London saw a rise in the Sloane. A fresh breed of upper class rangers epitomized

by Kate Middleton, began to walk the streets of Chelsea. The new rangers were cool, classy and represented new money. The next generation of the ‘Rah’.

Page 6: I n the beginning there was the Sloane Ranger…

The ‘Rah’ brought the Sloane Ranger into the twentieth century and new set of

guidelines were published. Despite a influx of new varieties (the EcoSloane, EuroSloane, PartySloane), the ‘Rah’ remained and aspired to be ‘Fabulously British’.

Then in 2007 the University of Reading said; ‘Let there be Land Managers’.

And there were….

The BSc Sloane.

In their millions….

Land Managers, or BSc Sloane's, quite simply study land management. However, there

are a few exceptions based on how much of a ‘lad’ you are, your parents income or your hall of residence. To identify a land manager is easy…

Land managers are keen sportsmen and can either be found at the rowing club, the

polo society or in the bar ‘sharking’.

They partake in weekly rituals reminiscent of masonry acts, ‘Whisky Wednesdays’.

The terms state that each member must drink as much whisky as possible from a wellington boot before the student union. The conditions state that should anyone miss more than two sessions in a row or be sick, then you’re out.

Shooting and Partying are an essential skill of a Land Manager. Seasonal trips are

arranged to each of their homes to experience the great outdoors and the local ale. It is an opportunity for the most elite members to bond and compete.

From University they take a year out travelling then go on to work for Knight

Frank, their parents estate or The Polo Lifestyle Company in London (founded by a BSc Ranger). And PARTY.

What more could a Bsc Ranger want? What is the one thing they don’t have at

University but they have at home? What could add to their reputation of wealth, status and comradeship? What is fabulously British?

Rent a rover will be a service available exclusively to Land Managers, or BSc Sloanes.

On enrollment at the University, and every term from then on, the Land Manager will be offered the chance to hire a classic land rover and with that, the rights to drive in and around campus. The Land Managers will have reserved parking (marked by their logo) outside Wantage Halls, the library, student union, agriculture building and the gym. The rovers will also be available to drive into Reading town centre and the Rowing Club with similar parking privileges.

The offer will cost a premium, but I’m sure Daddy won’t mind.
