Ourtravels took us to the Iowa/Missouri convention in Mexico,Missouri; the Kansas conventionin Wichita; Duchess Rosella’sDay; the Alberta convention inCalgary; and the Wisconsinconvention in Prairie du Sauk. All the convention hosts wereamazingly adept at puttingtogether very interesting tours, speakers and entertainment. Thanks to all of our hosts andhostesses! We really enjoyed theopportunity to join the chaptersfor their conventions.

Wayne and Terry Wildermanhave made great plans for theIFF Convention to be held inHelena, Montana thissummer. Helena is a beautifularea and the temperaturesshould be very welcoming. Youwill need to reserve a roomright away. July is touristseason and you might not be

able to reserve a room at thelast minute. Know that you cancancel your room until the dayprior to your arrival if your planschange. So, pick up the phoneand make your hotel reservationtoday so you can join us inHelena this summer.

If you have any thoughts orideas on how to improve ourorganization, please plan toattend the committee meetingsto add your two cents worth. Ifyou can’t make it, be sure toexpress your thoughts tocommittee members. I haveasked the tours committee tolook into possible tours to Cuba,Alaska and Central America. How about another IFF cruise?

We are planning the winterworkshop for the last half ofJanuary 2016 in Las Vegas,Nevada. I will put the details inthe Flyer as soon as plans arefinalized.

The “Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2" hasbeen introduced in both housesof the U.S. Congress. The officialtitle is House Bill 1062 or SenateBill 571. The bill will includepilot’s medical reform and would

eliminate the 3rd class medicalfor most private pilots and cutor reduce red tape for pilotissues dealing with the FAA. Iurge all IFF members wholive in the U.S. to contacttheir U.S. Senators andCongressmen asking fortheir support of the Pilot’sBill of Rights 2.

I hope you have clear skies andsmooth air as you travel.

PQUADS will begathering at the2015 Annual IFFConvention inHelena, MT at noonon Sunday, July19th. Watch foryour letter toarrive in June.

To start with…..what a winter! We enjoyed our winter stay inOsoyoos, BC. With old timedancing three times a week, morning pool laps, cards andwalking, we enjoyed an activelifestyle while gazing on thosehuge BC mountains. Kenpurchases a set of floats inKelowna for the float plane heis having built. Transport forthem back to Manitoba fell thru,so we came up with an alternateplan. He flew our 182 “Queenie”back to our farm in Manitoba, then turned around and droveour truck back out to BC. We

spent many hours on our wayhome towing the floats. I havenever done a trip home throughthe mountains. The scenery wasincredible, but I think I stillprefer flying! We stopped at theAlberta Flying FarmerConvention in Calgary. It waswonderful to catch up witheveryone. I was pleased thatthey crowned Merry Vandervalkas their Chapter Queen while wewere there. We arrived homeApril 13 to no snow on the farm.Even the bluebirds beat us homethis year. We already had acouple of pairs nesting on ourbluebird line.

Fast forward 4 days to April 17,and we flew over to Onanole,MB to the Elkhorn Resort for the59th Manitoba Flying FarmerConvention. Plans are alreadyunderway to celebrate MFF’s 60th

Anniversary in style next year.Convention attendees fromother chapters included IFFDuchess Rosella and Bill Prattfrom Alberta; Clément andSylvia Dion, Innis and JerrySwanson and Carl and JoanGillis from Saskatchewan; JeffThompson from Wisconsin andGlenn Kinneberg fromMinnesota. Jeff flew Glenn in

his 182. They attended ourconvention from Friday untilSunday, then left early Sundayto attend the WisconsinConvention. They attended twoconventions in two differentcountries on the same weekend.I think that may be one for therecord books. That is a goodexample of the Flying FarmerSpirit!! We are looking forwardto attending the Mid AtlanticConvention in May.

With the Helena Conventioncoming up, I would like toencourage Chapter Queens tolet their names stand for IFFRoyalty. I look forward toseeing you all in Helena.

Duchess’s Report

Bill and I enjoyed our time inArizona and returned toAlberta March 30. We have beenvery busy since returning.

The Alberta Flying FarmersConvention was held in Calgaryat the Carriage House Inn, April10,11 & 12th. Duchess Day wasso special. The Conventionplanners - Eleanor House andHannah MacDonald did such awonderful job of organizing theConvention and Duchess Day.

Friday, April 10, we were all inthe hotel lobby at 8:30 am readyto get on the bus. The bus tookus to the Calgary Airport wherewe had a tour of Viking Aircraft. This Canadian company buildsthe Twin Otter aircraft anddelivers them worldwide. Theytook us through the assemblyprocess of taking a bare fuselageand installing all the componentsto the finished product. Howinteresting!

The bus then took us to theMilitary Museum at the old CurrieBarracks. We did not have timeto go inside but made a shortstop to see some outsidedisplays. This Museum is ahistory of the Canadian Military- Army, Navy and Air Force. We were back on the bus wherewe were served a box lunch andover to the hotel to pick up morepeople to continue the tour. Thistime we headed South on thehighway to Okatoks to theChinook Honey Farm. Bill and Iworked with the owners ofthe apiary at Canadian Airlinesyears ago. Cheri Andrews tookus in their honey shed where welearned all about honey beesand how the honey is collected, next we went into the other shedwhere Art explained how hemakes Mead - honey wine. Theyalso have a store where wecould buy the honey and wine(a truely different tasteexperience).

From the honey farm we wentto the Saskatoon Berry Farm –another very interesting place. This is a tree farm, greenhouse, furniture store, and restaurant. We had a great time looking ateverything before dinner. Thedinner was excellent with time

for toasting me as Duchess. I amhappy to report only goodthings were said! Theentertainment for the eveningwas a Cowboy Poet - DorisDaley. She takes everydaysituations and turns them intopoetry. Back to the hotel and the rest ofthe Convention. Saturday - wehad a good business meeting, then after lunch an interestingspeaker, Darrell Janz. The Saturday eveningdinner was very nice with twoyoung entertainers - a Sister andBrother team - she played theviolin and he played the guitar.I did the honors of crowning thenew Alberta Queen - MerryVandervalk. I almost hate togive up the title of ChapterQueen - I have had so much funthis year. The following weekend was theManitoba Flying FarmerConvention in Riding MountainNational Park at the ElkhornResort and Spa. Bill and I flewto Winnipeg on Air Canada andrented a car to drive. We hadsuch a good time - the FlyingFarmers are the most hospitablepeople in the world.

Hello everyone!

This is going to be a long andvery busy newsletter for you! With all of my livestock and otherthings going on it’s going to bea lot to take in! We recently hadour High School prom and it wasa TON of fun! I went last yeartoo, with the same guy that I’vebeen dating for the past yearand a half, so pictures are reallyfun since they show how muchwe’ve both changed in the pastyear. We got there sort of earlyfor walk in so we weren’t last inline, but we weren’t first. Wedanced to a lot of songs andreally had a ball with everyone. We were just all a little onedge…. We were in a tornadowarning! It barely started rainingonce we got there, and by thetime we were about done it wasraining and hailing. We made itthrough the night without atornado, but we were all onguard. Once we were done withprom we went home and fellasleep on the couch and mygrandma cooked us a snack. Bythat time it was 12:30 and we

had to head to the school forthe after prom party. Everyonelooked like zombies by then, soadding a few blow up obstaclecourses and 2 giant hamster ballcourses, we were all dead tired.Me and Ty left at 3 am becausewe were planning on going toIHOP in Garden City forbreakfast, and so were a fewothers. A lot of others stayeduntil it ended at 5:30 am. Wewent to breakfast and made itback in town by 6:30. I took ashower and went to Ty’s houseto go to church with them. Irecently was told by my bigsister that my brother-in-lawBrent who was staying with usthat weekend, had told her “I’mstaying away from Reilly this

weekend. She’s been up for over24 hours!” I wasn’t even that bad!

The next weekend was my showwith my steer Eli in Johnson,Kansas. It was a futurity show, which means that if you buyyour calf from their cattle salein the fall, you can bring it backin the spring and show againstthe other calved bought therealso. Eli was super ornery andwe were all pretty nervous. Thejudge was pretty understandingin my showmanship class. Theonly remarks he said to me were“You have a lot of talent, andyou handle your calf very well.Today’s just not his day.” In otherwords, your good but your calfisn’t. Then I placed 6th in theheavy weight cross bred classagainst 15 or more calves. Thatwas the worst showingexperience I’ve probably had ina really long time in that class. The arena was SO small thecalves were packed into the ring

side by side and they touched.I’d try to bend and set my steerup, and my hair would tickle thecalf next to mines ear! So I wastrying to set my already grumpysteer up, while the other calvesear was whacking me in the face!We got through it and did well, but it got pretty western. In thefuturity class I placed 3rd andwon $350. I was really proudof my steer and it inspired meto possibly take him to moreshows.

Unfortunately the excitement ofthe show was over the next day.My 21 year old step-brotherKarlton Waechter was tragicallykilled. It was really unexpectedand hit everyone really hard.Karlton was a livestock showingprodigy that could makeanything with 4 legs look like amillion bucks. He was a constantcounty champion forshowmanship, market hogs, lambs, heifers, and steers. Hewas a professional cattlegroomer during and after highschool. He traveled all over theplace clipping and helping kidswith their projects. He went toDenver, Colorado; Kansas City,Missouri; Ft. Worth, Texas; andIndianapolis, Indiana with all ofthis. He was definitely a happyperson and was known for hisloud pickups and ornery tricks. He will definitely be missed.

School’s finally coming to aclose, and I can honestly say it’sabout time! I’m ready for thelong hot summer days, and

getting to mess with my animalsin the mornings! I’m also prettysure grandpa’s going to put mein a tractor or put me on nozzleduty. I hope you all are enjoyingthe warmer weather, and hopeto see you soon!

I Am A Pilot

by Colene SagerWashington Flying Farmer

One year, ten months and ninedays is what it took. The reliefand joy flooded my mind whenthe Designated Pilot Examinersaid the magic words,“Congratulations! You are aPrivate Pilot.”

My introduction to generalaviation began when myhusband of one year decided hewanted to learn to fly. Hebought a Luscombe 8E and soonhad the license where I couldfly with him. All our family livedin the Boise, Idaho area and welived in Eastern Washington. Now weekend visits were

possible. Then our first babyarrived and our family did notfit in the Luscombe so we boughta Cessna 172. I took a fewlessons in both the Luscombeand C172. In fact, I soloedtwice in the 172. When our thirdbaby was on the way, thelessons ended.

Fast forward to June 6, 2013 andI am taking flying lessons again.Flying had become a way of lifefor us. We now had a MooneyM20C and had flown all over thecountry. Art had encouragedme to continue flying lessonsand I finally decided I would do

it. We (and the insurancecompany) decided I should renta trainer plane instead of flyingthe Mooney. I began lessons thenext day after my school busdriving job ended for thesummer. In my mind I thoughtI would surely have my licenseby fall. It was going to be astruggle to drive 45 minutes tothe airport and take a lesson anddrive 45 minutes home and stillbe on time for the afternoon busroute, but for a few months Icould manage.

On June 28, 2013 I wrote, “Iam thinking about flying ALL thetime. I even do mental landingswhen I wake up in the night fora bathroom call and go back tobed visualizing landings!” I haddecided to take lessons becauseI thought I should so we hadtwo pilots in the cockpit, but inthe process I had fallen in lovewith flying. In just a few weeksI realized that previously I hadused flying for transportation butnow I had a love for the joy offlying.

October 29, 2013 I soloed. Mylessons progressed just fine untilit came time to learn aboutlandings. It took a very patientinstructor to bring me to thepoint of going it alone on

October 29. It was a thrill. Ican vividly remember when hestepped out of the plane, sayinga prayer, “Dear Lord, it is justYou and me. Let’s go fly thisairplane!” The first time I soloedwas in 1969. I had only 7 hoursof instruction and I was scaredto death. This time I was 69years old and I was not a bitafraid.

My next accomplishment was onApril 4, 2014. I had studied thehome course by Jeppeson. Infact, I had spent hours. I set agoal of taking the test duringspring break from school busdriving. I took the test the firsttime on April 2. I failed by twopoints. I was so disappointed. The next day I was in myinstructor’s office for twogrueling hours and went homeand studied some more. I tookthe test again the next day andpassed with 78%.

The summer of 2014 was crosscountry time. Oh how I lovedgetting in the Cessna 152 andbeing the only one responsiblefor the flight! My first solo crosscountry I flew to Odessa,Washington and taxied up to IFFmembers, Stan and DebbyDammel’s doorstep. Parked theplane and went in for a 45minute visit. Now I could getused to this! On my long crosscountry, I flew to Lewiston,Idaho which is a towercontrolled field, then to Coeur d‘Alene, Idaho and back to myhome base of Pullman,Washington. I did my dual night

flight into Spokane InternationalAirport. I had my requirementsand way more hours thanrequired, but I was still havingtrouble with landings. I just didnot get the aileron and ruddercontrol on landing. I wanted tobe coordinated and you pilotsknow it just does not work thatway. Or perhaps you haveflown for so long and it hasbecome so natural to you thatyou do not even know how youdo it.

Finally we had lessons that werenot all spent in the traffic patternat KPUW. Now we went to thepractice area and began thepreparation for the flight exam.Steep turns, slow flight, poweroff stalls, power on stalls, flightunder the hood, unusualattitudes, etc. Then we wentback to landings and heexpected me to do short fieldlandings. You know, land righton the numbers but not before. Then there were soft fieldlandings and soft field take-offsand slips to a landing. If youhave read this all the waythrough, you get the idea of whyI was so elated on April 15,2015 when I heard the wordsfrom the DPE, “You are a PrivatePilot”.

community and the need for oursociety to encourage the senseof community in the nextgeneration. Grace’s volunteerismwith Loving Arms is centered oncommunities in Guatemala. Herfirst trip to Central Americaoccurred three years ago whenher granddaughter was goingthere with a mission team. Graceseized the opportunity to sharein her granddaughter’sexperience. Having trained as aregistered nurse, being an expertseamstress, and with an innatedesire to make the world a betterplace for those in need, Gracewas more than qualified for thechallenge of working for LovingArms in Guatemala.

Special FeatureFamily units are strong, but it isa struggle for the necessities oflife. Children attend a localschool from kindergarten tograde six. If they are to receivemore education they must walka dangerous mile or so to aneighbouring school. Like mostparents, Paraxaj parents wanttheir children to becomeeducated in order to have aprofession or a good job. Toattend school the children mustwear a uniform. This is whereGrace’s skills come into play. Sheteaches the indigenous womento sew blouses, shirts and tunics,(uniforms) for the schoolchildren. Once the women havelearned to sew, they are given asewing machine to encouragethem to continue with their newskills and to become self-sufficient sewing their ownprojects for sale in the localmarkets.

On display were some of theprojects the Guatemalan womenhad made and some that Gracehas made to take back with her.Resourcefulness is front andcenter when involved in suchmissionary work. Grace sharedhow she shops at Thrift Shops

for white sheets, duvets etc. From one duvet she can makeeight girls’ blouses for threedollars! How many people loveto receive bolts of cloth forChristmas presents? Grace does, for she turns them into schooluniforms. Getting used sewingmachines, material and othersupplies to Guatemala is achallenge due to the costs oftransporting by air. Nevertheless,Grace’s and Loving Arms’missionary work continues.

“Loving Arms is a Canadian(non-profit) charity working totransform the lives of the peoplewe serve living in Guatemala”(lovingarms.ca). It was foundedin 2005 and it began in theMunicipality of Parramos,Guatemala. It has expanded toother villages in the area asresources have allowed. Inpreparation for her next tripGrace Greenaway is busilyworking on several sewingprojects to take with her. A special thank you for all the cards, notes andletters sent to me recently.

On January 23rd, I fell, breaking my collar boneand fracturing some ribs. I received intensivetherapy for almost three weeks at Mercy Hospital. After that I moved to Our House Assisted Livingin Janesville, WI. Two days after moving to assistedliving I went to St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison,WI where I received a pacemaker the day aftermy birthday. My pacemaker is working well andI have few limitations because of it. On April 30thI am moving back to the farm.

Thank you again,Ruth Dodge-DuCharme

Present were the following:Gretchen Steen and Tom Ellis,Wenda Bird, Dawn and ChrisDenio, Nancy and Ken Williams,Diana Ham and Tom Nobles. Our thanks to Les and Jan forhosting. Several of us had putin an order ahead for theirample delicious corned beefdinners, and were notdisappointed - delicious! Jantreated us to the peanut butterpie specialty of the house fordessert.

In between sips of good darkbeer, we had a great timecomplaining about the bittercold unrelenting winter- with itshigh heat bills, leaky, iceencroached roofs, and slipperywalking conditions that had leftwe hardy ones, who had notretreated to warmer climates, house bound for much of theseason. It felt good being withour friends!

Les led us in a brief meeting. Ourlast gathering had been atRathbun’s on February 15. Wehad had no official meeting andour treasurer Gail MacDonaldwas still in Florida. Leswelcomed us and told us aboutour next event which they hadarranged for us at the “Zero SortRecycling Center”, the Casellafacility in Rutland, VT. Theyknow Joe Soula who coordinatestheir production, and Joe willgive us a talk and guided tour.Les told us to dress warmly butnot to wear open-toed shoes orsandals. And he was sure wewould find it amazing seeinghow their machines sort thetrash! The meeting endedwithout ceremony. Discussionfollowed.

So go and run freeSo go and run free with theangels

Dance around the golden clouds

For the lord has chosen you tobe with him

And we should feel nothing butproud

Although he has taken you fromus

And our pain a lifetime will last

Your memory will never escapeus

But make us glad for the timewe did have

Your face will always be hidden

Deep inside our hearts

Each precious moment you gaveus

Shall never, ever depart

So go and run free with theangels

As they sing so tenderly

And please be sure to tell them

To take good care of you for me

Look for me in RainbowsTime for me to go now, I won’tsay goodbye;Look for me in rainbows, wayup in the sky.In the morning sunrise when allthe world is new,Just look for me and love me,as you know I loved you.Time for me to leave you, Iwon’t say goodbye;Look for me in rainbows, highup in the sky.In the evening sunset, when allthe world is through,Just look for me and love me,and I’ll be close to you.It won’t be forever, the day willcome and thenMy loving arms will hold you, when we meet again.Time for us to part now, wewon’t say goodbye;Look for me in rainbows, shiningin the sky.Every waking moment, and allyour whole life throughJust look for me and love me,as you know I loved you.Just wish me to be near you,And I’ll be there with you.Music and lyrics: Conn Bernard(1990).
