MAKING THE CASE FOR ACTIVE

CITIZENSHIP AND SOLIDARITY

Youth Exchange

Engagement Global hosted the EU - AU Youth Symposium 6 – 8 May

2019 in Bonn, Germany, which was attended by exchange and

volunteering stakeholders from Africa and Europe. The Symposium

addressed a range of topics from quality standards in the sector,

reciprocity and digitisation to the SDGs and Agenda 2063. South

African representation included Graeme Cairns (SAwN), Jabulani

Nzimande (SAAN) and Mike Denison (WESSA). WESSA presented on

SDG Methodologies alongside Germanwatch, an NGO focussed on

mobilising youth for a sustainable future.

Aya Chebbi, AU Youth Envoy, set the tone with a meaningful key note

address where she highlighted five benefits to youth mobilisation and

exchange which are good for us to all consider in our work –

• Shaping narratives to create positive outcomes

• Perception & dialogue that promotes equality and solidarity

• Future of work is key to sustainability and social cohesion

• Trans-national solidarity & Pan-Africanism is everybody’s responsibility

• Reciprocity in development is key to transformative growth and development

AGYI Technical Steering

Meeting 2-4 May (Bonn)

Implementing organisations, GIZ,

Engagement Global and the AU

steering team met for 3 days in Bonn

to review progress to date, coordinate

upcoming activities, further develop or

deepen areas of impact such as the

focus on quality and standards, the

Innovation Fund, work with alumni

and partner matching. The committee

has also started to look towards the

post-pilot phase and attention to

where AGYI and the service offer after

2020 would be most valuable.

An extension workshop was held by

the Skills in Exchange Working Group

of the technical team, 4 May, to

consolidate work to date and set

tangible targets. Agriculture and the

green economy have been identified

as the thematic areas for at least one

pilot to be developed before

September 2020 which will be either a

re-formatted or a new format

exchange with a specific skills lens

attached to the exchange experience.

Now in full swing, 19 youth, 3 countries, multiple

languages and one vision – Beyond 2030! The

International Youth Planning Teams from SADC,

Benin Region & Germany will present their draft

plans this month for the youth led Countdown

Conference in Germany, December 2019.

The conference enables a critical youth

perspective of the global frameworks of Agenda

2063 and the SDGs. www.countdown2030.net

The CD2030 team will be meeting for a 1-day

planning session in Johannesburg 28 June which

is also part of the AGYI Youth Month Activities.

I went through the South-North program via Sage-net.

My project was the Evangelische Stiftung Arnsburg in Lich

Hessen which is a children’s home and after care centre

where I worked in the knowledge and competence

centre preparing extra mural activities for the learners

residing in the home. We focused on Global and

Intercostal Learning and I also facilitated an Arts project,

taught English classes, did library work and facilitated

the Connecting Continents program.

Connecting Continents is an ongoing program between

learners from Port Elizabeth (South Africa) and kids from

Lich, Germany ESA that focuses on topics of global

learning. The participants interact via Skype, mail and

other applications. They create projects that they can

utilise to teach other kids in their spaces about global

topics.

The program inspired me to make changes at home. I

initially wanted to start an academic program but

unfortunately due to my studies and work I couldn’t,

which is when I decided to join the Ukonwaba

Foundation (more info on Facebook).

Recently I was part of the camp organising team where I

was in charge of organizing the content for our camp in

2018 and now because of my experience and hard work I

can take on bigger projects here at work.
