Message to the people...It’s refreshing to hear clear thoughts from public figures. Too often

people fall in love with images in magazines and television or movie screens. Sadly, however, much of what you see is not accurate and lacking in

substance. You don’t have role models before you. Instead you have models playing roles.This is not the case with actor, dancer, writer, producer, choreographer,

speaker and philanthropist Darrin Dewitt Henson. We’ve heard the comments about who should raise children and who

children should look to for inspiration, and I agree. However, I also believe that when you are in position of influence, or if you are high profile, you have a responsibility because people are looking at you. Newsflash: Most people don’t want stars and athletes being the main

influence in the lives of their children. But we realize that this happens from time to time so all we can hope is that high profile people will use common sense and decency as they live their lives and that they will care about others. Funny how some don’t realize the influence high profile people have, until they have children of their own! Mr. Henson knows about that “promissory note.” He realizes that whatever he achieves in life, he didn’t do

it all on his own. He knows he is standing on the shoulders of giants and by his work, there will be others who will one day stand on his shoulders.

You may have seen him in the hit television series, “Soul Food,” the big-screen movie, “Stomp the Yard,” or a number of other films, such as: “The Express,” and “The Salon.”No stranger to the Metroplex, Mr. Henson is in the area filming a movie about “young men who were incarcerated as juveniles” and how their lives are being changed through football. The movie has a message and that’s important to Mr. Henson who says he looks for strong messages in his works. Directed by Mark Ellis, “One Heart” is full of life lessons for the young men, says Mr. Henson, adding that there are characters in the movie who teach the young men how to give.Of his role as Officer McNeil, Mr. Henson says it is just the type of role he looks for, like the ones that have garnered him NAACP Image Award nominations.“I desire good roles,” he said, adding that good story lines and roles that he can be passionate about are of interest to him.He’s also a fitness guru and in addition to his popular Get Fit & Stay Fit with Darrin Henson videos, the Bronx native also has Darrin’s Dance Grooves dance videos, which sold millions. During a recent interview, Mr. Henson talked about the importance of giving back and of fulfil l ing that “promissory note.” That’s why he enjoys speaking to

Kim Coles, actress, comedienne and the new co-host of the TV show, “Are You Normal America?”, will be the guest speaker in November at the 2012 Nappiology Expo in the Dallas suburb of Hurst. The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 at the Hurst Conference Center, 1601 Campus Drive in Hurst, Texas. Workshops and exhibitors at the Fourth

Annual Nappiology Expo will provide information on the flexibility of natural hair.

Ms. Coles is known for her trademark micro-braids and has not relaxed her hair since 1988. She began wearing different natural styles in 2011 and

shares her natural hair journey through You Tube and other social networking sites. “This is my personal hair journey into the realm of natural hair,” Ms. Coles told fans on her website. “I have learned a lot about self-acceptance a self-love and I’m glad that I took a leap of faith to show the real me.”

“The natural hair care industry has exploded since we started doing the Nappiology Expo just four years ago,” said Nappiology founder De Johnson, who has worn a natural style for 22 years. “There are so many more natural hair styles, products to take care of those styles and natural styling techniques options for the 21st century African-American woman.”

The Nappiology Expo is taking on more national attention this year with speakers, attendees and natural hair bloggers coming from across the country. Pearl Eva Walker-Ali plans to travel from Memphis, Tenn. to attend the Nappiology Expo in Hurst this year. “I have booked a bus that holds 56 people and we are excited about coming to the Expo,” said Walker-Ali, owner of Legacy Loc and Natural Styles. She has worn her hair natural since 1999.

“Some of the women who are coming don’t have natural styles yet; they just want to get information on how to make the transition,” Walker-Ali said. “I am a natural hair stylist and I am always interested in learning about the latest techniques for natural hairstyles.” Walker-Ali will be a vendor at the expo promoting her new book “Locks, Braids, & Natural Styles…Things You Want to Know!”

Ms. Coles will be one of the presenters for 16 workshops scheduled for the Saturday expo. Her session is called “Kim Coles' Hair Journey.”

-- Recording artist, Wilton Banks has released a single in honor of First Lady Michelle Obama. His song entitled "First Lady", respectively mentions her charm, elegance, intellect, and states that she is the standard for the world, the pride of man, woman, boy and girl. In addition to honoring the First Lady in Chief, Wilton says that this song celebrates women everywhere. "Singing and songwriting are my gifts," says Banks who started singing in church at age three. He penned his song after the election of President Obama and decided to release it on a national scale at this time. He states, "Recently I read a letter written to the First Lady by Beyonce` Knowles. I am amazed that many of the comments she made are similar to the words in my song. I would love to hear her sing it." As to whether First Lady Michelle Obama has heard the song Banks states, "Im not sure, but I do have a note from Secretary of Education, Ernie Duncan stating that he passed on a copy of the song to the White House."

The education tie-in seems fitting in that Wilton has a degree in education from Grambling State University, and his father, the late Rev. Henry Banks Sr. received an award for sending the most students from one family through Grambling. A total of (9) children attended, with (7) graduating with degrees in education. In addition, Rev. Banks is responsible for getting the first school bus running for blacks in Northern Louisiana. Wilton plans to use proceeds from the song to help establish The Henry Banks Sr. Scholarship Fund in honor of his father.A trailblazer, Wilton also wrote, "Rap the Facts", a musical educational series that teaches math through singing, rapping, rhythm and rhyme. His innovative method of teaching math netted "Uncle" Wilton, an appearance on The Cosby Show. Banks says "As a teacher, I noticed that my students really enjoyed the catchy rhythms and rhymes that I would come up with on the spot to help them learn. As the 2012 presidential campaign counts down to Election Day, the 1-866-MYVOTE-1 Voter Empowerment Hotline is shifting from primarily voter registration to a valuable tool to help callers report voter suppression and other potential problems with the support of the nationwide nonpartisan Election Protection Coalition’s 1-866-OUR-VOTE Hotline.Since the beginning of the year, the 1-866-MYVOTE-1 Hotline has helped voters get local voter registration forms, transfer to county election offices and leave up to a 60 second message. With more than 33 states passing voter identification laws, there is widespread expectation that voters will face unprecedented barriers to exercising their right to vote. Urban League/Parkland

partnership brings healthcare to needed

area

More medically underserved individuals and families will now receive full healthcare services from a new Mobile Medical van thanks to a partnership between Urban League of Greater Dallas and the Parkland Health & Hospital System.“We are thrilled to be a partner for this mobile medical clinic because, like the Urban League, Parkland recognizes that to build a healthy community, we must be out in the community,” said Dr. Susan Spalding, Medical Director at Parkland’s Homeless Outreach Medical Services (HOMES) program, Youth and Family Centers and Juvenile Detention Services.The fully operational Mobile Medical Clinic provides the same services that are available at large Community Oriented Pr imary Care (COPC) neighborhood health centers including treatment of acute and chronic illnesses. It is staffed with a nurse, medical provider and driver. The number of staff available will depend on the needs of a location.The Urban League, which also serves as the Dallas County Community Action Agency, used funds received in the Stimulus Package in 2009 under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act through the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to purchase the mobile clinic.“The funds received not only provided jobs but also health care services for the next 10 years,” said Dr. Beverly Mitchell-Brooks, President and CEO Urban League of Greater Dallas. “This mobile unit can now reach more

locations in Dallas County and will provide much needed medical services to more homeless and low income individuals and families of all ages that we also serve,”According to Dr. Spalding, these medical mobile clinics are the only options for some communities. “There are so many different causes of homelessness with patients having a variety of illnesses and we want to treat them all,” said Dr. Spalding.Since 2008, there has been a marked increase in the number of families served

by the mobile clinics for medical services as well as the Urban League for help with mortgages, rent and utilities.For over 30 years the Urban League and Parkland have collaborated to provide much needed services throughout Dallas County including Counseling For Homeless Prevention, the League’s Sickle Cell Anemia and Outreach Laboratory Test ing, Communi ty Screening for Preventable Disease Project and the HIV+ Links to Care Program. . Most recently, they teamed up to create a community garden that is housed at the Parkland Southeast Dallas Clinic on Elam Road and provides fresh produce to neighborhoods throughout that area.

[African Americans are more likely to own a mobile device than whites and, of those with mobile Internet devices, more likely to do the majority of their online browsing on the device: 51% for non-Hispanic blacks compared to 24% for whites.The popularity of the Internet for information is no surprise since it can give instant access to information on almost any topic, such as cancer. On many websites you can now find basic facts about certain types of cancer, locate current clinical trials, and find support in dealing with cancer. You can also get information on the latest research advances, find doctors and hospitals, look up cancer treatment guidelines and drug information, and find out about complemen ta ry and a l t e rna t i ve medicine. You can even get information that is tailored for African Americans.When getting information online, however, especially health information, you should be careful. There are many different sources of information on the Internet - expert health organizations, government agencies, universities, merchants, interest groups, and the general public. Most of these

organizations and individuals are trying to offer accurate information that will genuinely help you. B u t b e c a u s e a n y o n e c a n p o s t information on the Internet, some people may be passing along information that is wrong, whether by accident or on purpose. As communicated in previous articles, aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to assist the body in healing itself. It can be a very useful addition to many treatment plans. Although the use of aromatherapy is safe enough to be done at home, consulting with a certified aromatherapist can be a great help in choosing the right essential oils and the best methods for their use.

Practitioners of aromatherapy in the United States receive certification through course work and clinical training. Referrals from massage therapists, chiropractors, or other licensed practitioners who employ the use of natural complementary approaches, are a good way of finding a qualified aromatherapist. A private consultation with an aromatherapist can in many situations be an addition to an existing medical treatment plan.

The role of the aromatherapist is to provide knowledge about the use of essential oils and how they can be used to improve or support a physical or emotional concern. In a professional consultation, the therapist will need to know your general medical history and the reason you are seeking counseling. Your level of s tress and/or discomfort will be assessed. This assessment plays an important role in determining the method of app l i ca t ion o f an a romat i c approach.

A focused aromatherapist will prepare for the consultation with a

list of questions answered before the visit. There are literally hundreds of essential oils available for use. The knowledgeable therapist will be able to target an appropriate category of essential oils for the client based on a well-developed questionnaire.

Perhaps the best part of an aromatherapy consultation is experiencing all of the aromatic possibilities in approaching an issue. The reaction of the client to the aroma of an essential oil is critical in the selection process. The goal is to select an essential oil or create a formula that is pleasing to the senses; thereby ensuring consistent use. Ground coffee is often used to clear the olfactory passages after smelling an aroma during a private consultation.

The most important thing to r e m e m b e r w h e n u s i n g aromatherapy or any other health related modality is to listen to your body. Make mental note of (or record in a journal) how you feel before and after an aromatherapy application. Approaching health and wellness through aromatherapy with a qualified aromatherapist is a cooperative effort that begins and ends with paying attention to your body and its signals.

The Cedar Hill ISD Athletic Department inducted the inaugural class of Longhorn Legacy Athletic Hall of Fame inductees on Saturday, October 20. The Longhorn Legacy Athletic Hall of Fame was officially initiated after long time Cedar Hill basketball coach David Milson passed away from lung cancer in January 2011. "We have been fortunate to have so many amazing

athletes and quality young people and coaches that have contributed to our

athletic programs over the years," said CHISD Executive Director of Athletics, Gina Farmer. "Establishing an athletic hall of fame is something that we have wanted to do for some time now. When we lost Coach Milson it just became something we had to accomplish in order to commemorate not only his legacy, but also to honor other outstanding athletes, coaches and teams

for their significant impact on our athletic programs."The inaugural Hall of Fame inductees include: David Milson - As the CHHS head boys' basketball coach for 23 years, Coach Milson had 676 career wins and lead two teams to state finals appearances (2004 and 2009). Coach Milson passed away in January of

2011 from lung cancer and was honored as the initial member of the Legacy Hall

of Fame at a ceremony in March of 2012 when the CHHS gymnasium was re-named in his honor. Diamond Jackson (Class of 1995) - Diamond was a three-year Varsity letterman in basketball, volleyball and track. She earned district MVP

honors in both volleyball and basketball in 1995, and was a regional qualifier in track twice (1994 and 1995). Her All-District, All-Region and All-State honors in basketball earned her the opportunity to play collegiate basketball at Texas Christian University.

Derrius Thompson (Class of 1995) - A two-time athlete of the year at CHHS, Derrius excelled in both football (3 year letterman) and track (4 year letterman). He was named first team All-District in football ('93, '94) and honorable mention All-State in football ('94). His football achievements continued at Baylor University, where he lettered for four years which lead to a professional career with the Miami Dolphins and the Washington Redskins. Keri Simms (Class of 1996) - Keri was a four-year letterman in basketball, cross country and track. She earned All-District honors in cross country three years ('93, '94 and '96); 1st team All-District selection in basketball all four years ('93-'96); and was a state qualifier in track three years ('93, '94 and '95). She added All-Region and All-State honors in basketball and still holds the Cedar Hill girls track record in the 3200 (11:57.1). Ugo Ihemelu (Class of 2001) - A three-year letterman in soccer, Ugo went on to play for Southern Methodist University where he earned All-Conference honors three years and was named an All-American ('04). He became the 5th overall pick of the 2005 MLS draft (Los Angeles Galaxy) and helped his team get to the US Open Cup and MLS Cup during his rookie season. Ugo signed with FC Dallas in 2009 and is currently playing in his 9th professional season. Crystal Manning (Class of 2004) - A four-year letter winner in track and field, Crystal currently holds CHHS girls track records in the 200m (23.54), the long jump (19'1") and the triple jump (41'9"). After her high school career, Crystal went on to the University of Kansas where she became

a three-time Big 12 Champion and was a four-time All-American. In 2008, Crystal was the USA under 23 NACAC triple jump champion and was named Track and Field Athlete of the Year for the Jayhawks. She placed 8th in the 2008 Olympic Trials for the triple jump

and 5th in the 2012 Olympic trials for the triple jump. Jason Richardson (Class of 2004) - A four-year letterman in track and field, Jason set the CHHS records in both the 110m hurdles (13.44) and the 300m hurdles (36.04) during his senior season. He was the State Champion in both hurdle events his junior year (2003) and won the State Championship in the 110m hurdles his senior year. Jason was named the 2004 Gatorade National High School Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year before heading to the University of South Carolina to continue his career. During college, he earned multiple honors including: Scholar Athlete of the Year, two time All-American (60m hurdles and the 110m hurdles), SEC first team (outdoor) and second team (indoor), as well as South Carolina MVP (both indoor and outdoor). Jason has been competing in the 110m hurdles as a professional since 2009. In 2011 he won the World Championship (13.16) and recently won the Silver Medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games (13.04). 2006 State Championship Football Team - The Longhorn Football team of 2006 completed a perfect season (16-0) by winning the 2006 5-A Division II State Championship in the Alamo Dome 55-17 over Cypress Falls. Two Longhorns received State Championship Game awards: Will Cole (Offensive Player of the Game) and Chris Francis (Defensive Player of the Game). Head coach Joey McGuire was named the 5A Football Coach of the Year. The 2006 team was ranked #5 in the nation (MaxPrep.com) and #18 in the National Prep Poll.

HOW TO NOT GROW OLD

(BlackNews.com) -- Growing old is not something we can avoid, but growing old and broke is! I speak about the Consumption Theory in my latest book, Power M.O.V.E.: How to Transition from Employee to Employer. So many people have been enlightened by its practical approach and simplistic delivery but, honestly creating success really is kind of simple. The only tough part about my theory is your ability to execute on it.

The successful execution of the Consumption Theory boils down to your perspective and approach to money. It's like the fork in the road. If you view money as a satisfier of today's itch instead of a weapon against future threats you will struggle with being able to carry out the practices of the Consumption Theory and convert income into wealth. Resources are not all meant to be consumed immediately or sometimes, consumed by you at all. As an entrepreneur you must recognize when resources within your grasp should be used, consumed, stockpiled or used to reproduce more resources.

Let me sidebar for a second. When it comes to your income, before you splurge on anything it should qualify for one of four factors: you enjoy the source of the income (satisfying), its abundant (significant), its sustainable (reproducing), and has longevity (long-term).

The Consumption Theory allows you to live in an economic straight line no

matter what is going on around you. Follow it and you won't feel like you are on a financial roller coaster. You won't be up and down in what you can or can't do and you won't find yourself going from side hustle to side hustle. No slow economy or market threats will easily impact your consumption. They will first affect the activities within the other detailed percentages outlined in the book, often leaving your personal lifestyle with no immediate affects.

Consumption Theory simply says that you should aim to live on 10% of your income if you expect to weather financial storms that WILL come: family emergencies, trauma, unemployment, unexpected repairs, slow economy, retirement, accidents, illnesses, etc.Let me go through some examples of how you can incorporate the Consumption Theory into your life.Popular Culture Example:Salary = $100,000Time = 20 yearsSavings Rate = 10%Consumption/Spending Rate = 90%Retirement = $200,000 on handLifestyle Sustainability upon Retirement = 2.2 yearsConsumption Theory Example:Salary = $100,000Time = 20 yearsSavings Rate = 90%Consumption/Spending Rate = 10%Retirement = $1.8 millionLifestyle Sustainability upon Retirement = 90 years

All examples excluding inflation, increased tax burdens, health challenges and transfer payments.Okay. Living to $10,000 (10% of example) in America in this day and age may prove difficult, not impossible just difficult. In this case you want to focus on increasing your earnings, not your spending.For those of you who can't set aside any portion of your income for an extended time I've coined your spending a "disease"; an addictive disease that may haunt you in your senior years, and sometimes immediately, unless you cure it or find a frugal spouse to offset your issue.If the full consumption theory is too extreme for you, consider this modest example I calculated at 50% consumption. If you merely have a salary of $100,000 and you saved 50% of your income for 20 years you will have stocked $1 million. You will be

able to live another 20 years on your nest egg at the same lifestyle, give or take inflation and health.

Pretty much, for every year you simply stockpiled 50% of your income equates to one year you wont have to work while maintaining the same lifestyle.The overall philosophy of the Consumption Theory is to not consume based on what you have, but instead consume based on what you want to have. This theory expedites the success rate of an entrepreneur.

Just be careful not to attach yourself to people in your young days that will make you miserable and regretful in your old days. Use having additional resources as an opportunity to have more, not as an opportunity to spend more and you will spend more time in bliss. Remember,
