“Special Olympics is important. It is a place where I belong. I have friends at Special Olympics and I don’t anywhere else. It is a place that I know I can go to and talk and someone will listen.”

Special Olympics has been a central part of my life for over 20 years.

And when I hear athletes say that they love everything about Special

Olympics, I know exactly what they mean.

I love watching the athletes accomplish something they never thought

they could do—hit a good golf shot, sink a free throw, or score a goal. The

joy on their faces is one of the purest displays of pride and achievement—

and guaranteed to be one of the most inspiring things you’ll ever see.

I love watching a parent’s face light up as their son or daughter crosses the finish line. It

doesn’t matter whether they’re in first place or last, parents lose themselves in the moment

just the same. The greatest victory as far as they are concerned is seeing their child making a

place for themselves in the world just by being who they are–and being celebrated for it.

I love seeing the tough exterior of a law enforcement officer melt as they’re wrapped up

in the hugs of enthusiastic athletes. And I love to see the pride of the officers who protect

and honor the flame of hope when they help carry the Special Olympics Torch into opening

ceremonies for so many of our events.

I love seeing members of the Knights of Columbus standing in intersections collecting

donations in exchange for a Tootsie Roll and word of gratitude. Or reading notes from junior

high students who’ve raised money through bake sales for their classmates who participate

in Special Olympics. Or hearing the funny screams of friends who, dressed in costumes and

holding hands, dive into a freezing cold lake to raise money for us.

I also love watching a new volunteer who isn’t entirely sure what they got themselves into

but, within the hour, discover that they wouldn’t choose to spend their day anywhere else.

Whether they realize it our not, Special Olympics and our athletes have made them lifelong

converts to this mission.

Most of all, I love that the athletes have invited me along with them on their journey to

create a world of acceptance, respect and inclusion. We’ve made great progress this year,

thanks to all of you who extend your friendship and support to this mission. I invite you to

read this report and then come see all of these things I’ve described. I know you’ll love it!

2012 Special Olympics Annual ReportSupporting Special Olympics Illinois

Each year, Special Olympics transforms the lives of people with intellectual isabilities.

The impact of our programs goes way beyond sports…just ask an athlete! Individual

donors account for 65% of our support. We can’t do it without you…and we can’t

thank you enough for your support!

Unique Ways Our Friends & Fans Give to Special Olympics Illinois

Law Enforcement Torch Run Thousands of people throughout the state

support Special Olympics Illinois through

the activities of the Law Enforcement Torch

Run. Whether it’s taking the Polar Plunge,

making a donation for Cop-on-Top at Dunkin’

Donuts stores, buying a Harley raffle ticket,

or purchasing souvenir shirts, hats or mugs,

people support us through their local law

enforcement officers. The Illinois Law

Enforcement Torch Run – 3,000 officers

strong – raised nearly $3 million in 2012!

In 2012, Special Olympics

Illinois received almost

$300,000 in estate

gifts and memorials

through direct bequests, as

beneficiaries of life insurance policies and

remainder trusts, or in lieu of flowers.

Estate Gifts

Amazing people in our

communities have asked for

donations to Special Olympics

Illinois instead of wedding gifts,

birthday gifts and anniversary gifts.

The Perfect Gift

Friends and families

made donations in honor

of athletes, coaches,

teams and volunteers

for bricks and engravings

in the Special Olympics

Illinois Tribute Park.

Tribute Park

Social Media Fans took to social media

in 2012 to vote for Special

Olympics Illinois in a number

of Facebook campaigns. Their

“Likes” and “Shares” resulted

in more than $15,000 in new

funds for our programs.
