JUNE 30. 1967 5 * b - ¦ BN* 0 ' ? *•. m * ? % CALUMET STAR IN FORM AGAIN—Iron Liege (left) forges ahead to win the $22,050 Laurance Armour Memorial Handicap at Arlington Park yesterday, proving that his leg injury has entirely healed. This spells more trouble for Calumet Farm’s orful display of horseflesh. Ini! addition to the 19 fillies and mares, there were nine stable! ponies and three outriders—more horses than a TV western.. Chalk players in crowd re-' , ceived their usual week-end buf- feting in the earlier events. Fa- , vorites were beaten in the first ; six races and in the fourth race : Poetic Dream a 6-to-5 shot fin- ished last as Bill Hartack -took | a loud round of boos. r i Drag Racing Slated At Aquasco Today Aquasco Speedway will stage ! another day of drag racing to- < day. beginning at 10 ajn., with final eliminations at 2 p.m. Leading figures in the field ¦ should be Bob Beraardon in a 1 1 1939 Chevrolet with a ’55 Chevy V-8 engine. Jimmy Davis in a ; 1932 Ford coupe with a ’57 Chevy engine and Robert Brown of Huntingtown. Md„ who will try ! for his eighth straight class vie- > tory in his stock 1956 Chevrolet. Through the stretch It nar- rowed down to whether Princess Turin’s heart was big enough to catch Pucker Up. Stride by stride the Calumet filly wore her rival down. Both were tiring notice- ably. Pucker Up never did quit; as Shoemaker, turning in a won- derful job of his own, held her togther into the wire. After the race Shoemaker summed up the race in his usual non-loquacious manner: "My mare just ran out of gas.” Hartack said happily. "We were in perfect position all the way. When I asked her for speed she gave it to me.” The final time of the race was a slow 2:05. The walking time of 27? j for the last quarter indi- cated that both Princess Turia and Pucker Up were running on courage alone. ; The time was the slowest since the race was switched to the present distance in 1951 when Eusanda took the lush prize and J was clocked in 2:04 3 s. Although j the track was only "good” during the early races because of last night’s rain, it had been labeled •fast by post time. Including the involved awards, which go along with the Dela- ware Handicap prize. Princess Turia took home a *120,875 net | pay check to the Calumet mint owned by Mrs. Gene Markey. Her share of the purse itself was *110,875, a record surpassing the *104.865 collected by Flower Bowl last year. The additional *IO,OOO came from nominators and breeders awards. Arch Rival finished second, a neck | CHICAGO, June 29 </*).—Cal- umet Farm’s Iron Liege, the Kentucky Derby winner, closed with a rush to win by a head over Greek Game in the *22,050 Laurance Armour Memorial at Arlington Park today. Ridden by Dave Erb, Iron Liege moved up on the outside around the stretch turn of the 7-furlong event for 3-year-olds and overhauled Fred W. Hoop- er’s Greek Game in the closing! strides. Third went to Manteau. Iron Liege returned *5, *2.60 and *2.40. The Armour was a prep for the *IOO,OOO Arlington Classic July 13. Iron Liege had been side- lined since May 25 because of a minor leg injury, and -his return! to action today proved him fit for a strong bid for 3-year-old honors this year. Mister Jive finished fourth, followed by Etonian. Jet Colonel, Better Bee, and Iron Liege’s stablemate Barbizon, last. Iron Liege, who surprised in the Kentucky Derby as a “pinch runner” for Calumet’s injured 1 Pen. Duke, broke well today but was outrun down the back- stretch. Greek Game, one of the Na- ; tlon’s top two-year-olds last ! year, went to the front early. He was headed by Etonian around the stretch turn, but again spurted ahead at the mid- stretch. . When jockey Erb called on Iron Liege, the Calumet star 1 closed stubbornly and went at it noee-to-nose with Greek Game down the final strides and shaded the Hooper colt at the wire. There were two scratches— Ezgo and Osceola. The Calumet Farm entry of; Iron Liege and Barbizon andi Greek Game were equal choices 1 !at 3-to-2 on the board. Erb had the mount on Iron Liege because Bill Hartack was in the East piloting Calumet’s Princess Turia to Victory in the rich Delaware Handicap. Iron Liege earned *12.825 in! the Armour to boost his 1957 j earnings to $234,000. As a 2- year-old he won only $10,705. Iron Liege’s time on a track called “good” was 1:24%. Zuyder Zee broke badly and trailed the leaders by some four lengths down the backstretch. High Ronda overtook Arch Rival rounding the turn for home and had a length lead as the field headed for the wire. Arch Rival went slightly wid* at the turn and as he did, Gam- bardella sent Zuyder ee between horses to challenge for the lead. High Ronda Fades It was a bitter battle between the three, but Zuyder Zee re- sponded willingly. High Ronda suddenly gave way and Arch Rival was beaten off. The winner paid *5.60 and went the distance in 50.2. By winning the Inaugural Purse, Zuyder Zee boosted his earnings for the year to *11,875 for Dorsey of Hagerstown, Md. The 43-day meeting got awayr to the delight of the long shot players when H. B. Burdette’s 1 Kay’s Jimmy, with Willie Herman in the saddle, romped; in the first race to the tune of *56.60 to set up a daily double of *5lB. Ayron’s Sky, ,idden by Rich- ard Gordon, completed the dou- ble by paying *B.OO with the to and 1 combination hitting the jackpot. The first foul claim of the meeting was disallowed by the officials after the running of the sixth event, the Happy Argo Purse, the day's secondary feature. Annette G., with Richard Ford | of Arlington in the irons, swept i home a length winner over the ; 5-to-l second choice. Blue Fury, with E. C. Allnutt’s Bill W., third. CALUMET STAR IN FORM AGAIN—Iron Liege(left) forges ahead to win the $22,050 LauranceArmour Memorial Handicap at Arlington Parkyesterday, proving that his leg injury has entirelyhealed. This spells more trouble for Calumet Farm’s

orful display of horseflesh. Ini!addition to the 19 fillies andmares, there were nine stable!ponies and three outriders—morehorses than a TV western..

Chalk players in crowd re-', ceived their usual week-end buf-’ feting in the earlier events. Fa-, vorites were beaten in the first; six races and in the fourth race

order. Bayou made a bold movethen but collapsed suddenly.

Through the stretch It nar-rowed down to whether PrincessTurin’s heart was big enough tocatch Pucker Up. Stride by stridethe Calumet filly wore her rivaldown. Both were tiring notice-ably. Pucker Up never did quit;as Shoemaker, turning in a won-derful job of his own, held hertogther into the wire.

After the race Shoemakersummed up the race in his usualnon-loquacious manner: "Mymare just ran out of gas.”

Hartack said happily. "Wewere in perfect position all theway. When I asked her forspeed she gave it to me.”

The final time of the race wasa slow 2:05. The walking timeof 27? j for the last quarter indi-cated that both Princess Turia

and Pucker Up were runningon courage alone.

; The time was the slowest sincethe race was switched to the

j the track was only "good” duringthe early races because of last

Including the involved awards, which go along with the Dela-ware Handicap prize. PrincessTuria took home a *120,875 net
