Nobdthstanding the wide distribution of some fo rms and. their general abl,mdan ce they require certain kinds of sur­r ouncii ngs which a r e d i ffe rent for ea ch species ,

Decapoda • ..,. The princ ipal fr esh ... water crust ceans in this group of interest as fish food are the shrimps or pr a,ms and the crayfishes , Of the former Palaemonetes i s ' the most important . It has been r ecorded from Florida to Illinois and La~e Erie, and is the smalles t of fresh- wa t e r decapods . It i s frequently abundcmt , livinG among "iat e r mosses and gras ses and abounds in creeks , ponds, and l akes . The crayfi s hes or cr awf i s hes are the cownonest inland representatives of Decapoda . ~hey live in rivers , ponds , l akes , and sloughs; some are more or l ess terrestrial, , ~.thers sub­terranean , living i n cave -naters . T,hey are mainly carnivorous, their food being smaller animals, dead or a live , and decompos ing f lesh , but south­war d an omnivorous species i s a great depr edator in newly - pl anted f i elds of corn and cotton . The diffe rent species vary much in size , many of them being l a r ge enough to be of cons iderable conmercial i l;rportance . The small er, pur ely aquatic species form an important food for sever a l species of fishes , including p l ack bass , r~ck b~s s , and ~8rch . The e , r,s of shrimp and crayfi shes are carri ed during incubation, attached to the swimmer ets of the abdomen, and the young are of t he form of the adult , when hatched ~ They cling for a time afte r hatching to t he hairs of the swin~erets ~y means of their little up:?er feet , and are carried about by the mot her crawfish.

JiRTIFICIAL CULTURE OF CRUSTACEANS

Entomostraca , pa rt icularl y species of Daphnia, have been rais ed s u c­cessfully for food of sl'!lt;l.l l aquariur.l fishes and a l so for fo od of young black bass and other fishes in ponds . 'fhe methods employed have been descri bed in liIemorandum 1-61 a va ilabl e from t hi s Service .

Naturall y, the most comL".on and 1'lidely distributed s:Jecies a r e best f or t his purp ose , since they will thrive under a .3reat~r variety of conditions . It i s doubtful, ho,,::ever , if it is practicabl e to produce them 1...11 sufficient uantities to support a l a r ge ~1umber of f i s h .

Neither the fres 11- -fater shrimps n or crayfi shes have been rai sed artificially in this c ountr}' , 1.Jut in l!,urope c r ayfi sh cul ture has been practiced Kith mor e or l ess success . It ap~)ears , however , that a s ex­tensive plants are r equired t o produce crayfish as to r a ise f~_sh so that their production for f i sh food is not pr acticable .

J.. nearby suppl y from water of si.:nilar character is desirable , not only on account of conveni ­ence but because the s_ ecies oc cUrril1C! there are j-,lOSt lil~el;,/ to be suited to the Faters to be stocked . :lovrever , some crustaceans can be shipped long di stances "V/ith reasonable care .
