Fill in the date in the first box, followed by the book title and Accelerated reader level (found in the inside page of the book). Then the pages your child has read. Finally write a comment in the last box.

You could praise the child, say what they did well, or suggest something they need to work on.

Here are some examples of what you might write:

Alfie read with fluency and accuracy. Alfie used a range of strategies for new words. Alfie can find evidence in the text. Alife could spot the describing words. Alfie could predict what might happen next. Alfie was really interested in this book about

hospitals. Alfie didn’t like this story, he thought it was scary.

Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at their own level and reads it at their own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer (passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read). AR gives children, teachers, and parents feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.

How does it work?

The Accelerated Reader books in the library are organised by your child’s accelerated reader level, which is called ZPD (Zone of proximal development). The ZPD is not the same as the assessment level your child gets, so don’t be hung up on numbers.

Book are grouped by interest level, so that children choose books that are age appropriate.

Children aged 5-8 are considered Lower interest level (one coloured sticker) and children aged 9-13 are considered middle interest (two coloured stickers).

Once they have found the bookshelf for their age, they then choose a book that is the right level for them.

Once the children have completed a book, they log on to Accelerated reader, search for the book they are reading and take a quiz on it. They can see the progress they have made instantly and accumulate points as they go.

Parents can access children’s accounts at home through Home Connect and even receive email updates each their child has taken a quiz.

Children will take a star reading test with their teacher each term; this will determine if their ZPD range needs to move and will show the progress they have made.

When reading with your child it helps them to... … use expression. … find out about new things. … become confident in front of an audience. … increase their level of enjoyment. … discuss ideas and characters. … make predictions about what might happen next!

Here are some guidelines that will help make reading time as useful and enjoyable as possible: Choose a time when you both want to read, reluctance

is not the best way to start. Sit in a comfortable and quiet spot, side by side, so you

can both see the book easily. Talk about the book, the title, and the cover before you

start, and after you finish. Praise and encourage your child’s efforts Know when to stop, between 10 and 20 minute is fine. Allow time to look at and discuss the illustrations. When they have finished the book, help them to write a

review. Answer questions such as: What happens in the book? How did it make you feel? Did you notice any thing interesting about the events or language? What kind of things would you want the author to change? Would you recommend the book and why?

If your child makes a mistake, wait until the end of the sentence to see if it is corrected. If not, say something like: “That bit didn’t quite make sense, let’s have another look at it.”

If they come to an unfamiliar word, wait couple of seconds to allow them time to work it out.

Then help by: Simply saying the word and getting your child to repeat

it before continuing. OR Ask them to miss it out and continue to the end of the

sentence. Once at the end of the sentence, try the following:

Remind them that they can sound it out by saying all of the sounds and then blending them. Then ask if it sounds like any words they know.

Encourage them to have a sensible guess. Get them to identify what the first sound is. Reread the sentence, missing the unfamiliar word, and

see if they can insert a word with the same first sound to see if it fits.

See if they can spot any clues from the pictures. If they still can’t work it out, say what they word is. If the book is turning out to be too difficult, don’t let

them struggle, read it out loud together.

If your child finds it hard to finish a book, remind them of the following:

Read some of the book everyday. Set yourself a target - say ten pages. Use two bookmarks: One to mark your place in the

book, and one to set the point to which you are going to read up to. That way it doesn’t seem like an endless succession of pages ahead of you.

It’s very important to ask your child questions. This helps them to make sense of what they are reading, and helps you to check their understanding. Here are some useful questions to ask for fiction books: What happened after…? How many…? Can you name the…? Describe what happened when…? Who said….? Can you tell me another meaning for the word…? Which is true or false…? Describe what happened on this page? Can you describe a main character? Can you describe the setting? What do you think about….why? Pick a quote from the text that tells us…? How does the author…? For non fiction ask: On which page/paragraph/section can you find out

about…? Using the index, how could you find…? Using the contents pages find the page about…? Which part of the book tells us…? What does a glossary/index/contents help us to do…?
