cultural landmarks

21. Casino del bel respiroParco di Villa PanfiliA luxurious country villa owned by the noble Pamphilj family. The gardens, created in the 17th Century, retain an 18th Century layout, from when they were redesigned according to French taste.

22. Terrazza del GianicoloPiazzale Giuseppe GaribaldiThe Janiculum Hill is not one of the historic Seven Hills of Rome (Aventine, Caelian, Capitoline, Esquiline, Palatine, Quirinal, Viminal) but its terrace boasts an incredible view. It is reachable through a steep walk uphill or by bus from Trastevere.

23. Villa SciarraViale delle Mura Gianicolensi, 11The Villa Sciarra is located on top of Janiculum Hill, between the Trastevere and the Old Monteverde neighborhoods. This area once featured lush gardens. Its name comes from the last private owner of the villa,

the prince Maffeo II Sciarra. The palace still retains, in part, its original layout.

24. San Pietro in MontorioPiazza di S. Pietro in Montorio, 2Situated in one of the most beautiful corners of Rome on the Janiculum, this church features a breathtaking view. Its most notable characteristic is the amazing Bramante’s Tempietto, considered one of the masterpieces of Renaissance architecture by Bramante. It is dedicated to the martyrdom of San Pietro (Saint Peter). According to the Christian tradition Saint Peter was, in fact, crucified right here.

25. Fontanone dell’Acqua Paola Via GaribaldiThe “Fontanone” dell’Acqua Paola (big fountain) was built to mark the end of the Acqua Paola aqueduct and is located where Via Garibaldi meets the top of the Janiculum Hill. It was Commissioned by Giovanni Fontana who built it between 1611 and 1612: it is a monumental structure!

26. Museo della Repubblica romanaLargo di Porta S. PancrazioThis Museum is located inside the monumental San Pancrazio Gate. The large exhibition space informs the visitors on the history of the Roman Republic. On display are paintings, incisions, Garibaldi memorabilia and a rich interactive library.

27. Tasso’s oakViale delle Mura AurelianeThis is the oak where famous Italian writer and poet Torquato Tasso, plagued

by poor health, used to sit and meditate during the last month of his life. In order to reach it we recommend you take the Janiculum walk starting from the San Pancrazio Gate, the location where Mameli, who wrote the Italian national anthem, was mortally wounded.

shopping & amenities

30. Musci Group BarbershopVia Oreste Regnoli 55This retro-chic barber shop location was founded with the intent of having clients go back in time, with the magic atmosphere of an old barber shop where you can smell the humidity of the sponges, the perfumes of the essential oils and the first cosmetics for men.

Tours1. Nature loversEnter the Villa Doria Pamphilj from the entrance of Via Vitellia and head towards the lake, a picturesque location where you can read, play sports, and relax surrounded by nature. Once you leave Villa Pamphilj, head towards the aqueduct and the Fontanone: both stand on the top of the Janiculum Hill and offer a spectacular view over Rome. The Fontanone appears in one of the first scenes of the Academy award-winning movie “La Grande Bellezza” by Paolo Sorrentino. A few steps on, nearly invisible, you’ll see the “tempietto” (little temple) of San Pietro in Montorio, a small building considered one of the masterpieces of Renaissance architecture by Bramante, one of the major architects in history.

2. Heading to the Vatican Start from the San Pancrazio gate and head towards the Janiculum Hillto enjoy the breathtaking view from the terrace, with a stop at Bar Gianicolo to quench your thirst. Wait until noon to hear the cannon at the Janiculum Hill (originally a cannon was fired at this exact time to unify the bells in all the Roman churches of the city). Keep descending till you meet the “Tasso” oak, where 16th Century Italian poet Torquato Tasso used to rest during the last month of his short life. Keep walking towards the Vatican and enter Piazza San Pietro.

“This neighborhood is an oasis of tranquillity, a place that enriches your soul, a haven from the traffic, thanks to its villas and gardens where you can walk surrounded by the remnants of Garibaldi’s history. Spend some time in Monteverde and you’ll be able to experience Rome like a local.”

Paola, host since 2014

“Whenever I walk in the neighborhood I always take a good look around. Ancient villas take turns with nice buildings, and you can see trees of loquat, lemon, tangerine and pomegranate peeking through their fences covered in jasmine. We’re on a hill, so we’re constantly walking up and down the “green mountain” (“Monte verde”). It’s nice to look over the city, to see the trees and the buildings outlined against a (most of the time) blue sky. Everywhere you’ll find historic treasures. The most elegant area is combined with the most popular one, more modern and featuring many amenities. Large green areas such as the ancient Villa Pamphilj and Villa Sciarra guarantee fresh air. You’re right near the ancient Walls, reachable within a few tram or bus stops. It makes you feel good to wake up and go back to a place where there are fewer beautiful sites to see helping you to enjoy them for longer, after visiting the extraordinary, loud beauty of Rome’s city center.”

Giuliana, host since 2015

“I really hope you have the chance to visit Monteverde, one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Rome. It has different sides to it: it starts from the Janiculum, where you’ll find history, breathtaking views and the most beautiful Italian villas, and then it becomes a residential neighborhood that gets more modern the further you are from the center. The magnificent Villa Pamphili dominates its surroundings, an immense park with villas, lakes, swans and relics, a dream for anyone who’d like some tranquillity in a hectic city. Strongly recommended are the Janiculum and Villa Sciarra, but also a visit to the American Academy and all the Art Nouveau Villas around Via Dandolo. Last but not least, make sure not to miss the Museo della Repubblica Romana e della Memoria Garibaldina if you want to know more about Italian art and history.”

Debora, host since 2013

“In this neighborhood you will find the largest park in the city: Villa Doria Pamphili. The locals love to spend their time here walking, cycling, and jogging through the little alleys while looking at ancient monuments such as the Casino Algardi (or Del Bel Respiro) and its Italian gardens. You can meander through the green areas, the lakes and the long boulevards. But Monteverde is more than just that. It’s a very interesting neighborhood, architecturally speaking: just walk around to spot the villas, so gorgeous that they’re often used as sets for movies. And traditions are kept alive: you can still see the authentic Italian small shops so hard to find anywhere else: the bakery, the greengrocer, the salami maker...”

Patrizia, host since 2011

The host community in Rome Ciao and welcome!

The map you’re holding in your hands is the result of the love hosts on Airbnb have for the Monteverde neighborhood. The Rome Home Sharing Club is the heart of the host community in the city and organizes activities in order to support the neighborhoods and small businesses of Rome. Activities such as the promotion of small businesses in the local area, and other volunteering activities with local associations. From 2008, many Romans have welcomed guests like you into their homes. This small guide, written by the Airbnb community, helps to celebrate the world renowned Roman hospitality, not only by helping you to navigate the city easily and spot the most authentic flavors and locations in Monteverde, but also to share how you can be the perfect Roman guest.

Have a nice walk in the neighborhood!

Some city rules

Here are some tips from Roman hosts that will help you live like a local:

Arrival. Once you arrive at your Airbnb listing, don’t be suspicious if your host asks for your ID card. In Italy, all the hosts have to share their guest’s personal details with the central police station within 24 hours of their arrival. A tourist tax may also be due and can be paidin cash. Make sure you ask for the receipt once you’ve paid for it.

Trash. Always ask your host how to properly recycle in your area. You can also learn more on this website: www.amaroma.it/en.

Public water. You can drink the public water in the city. You can also fill your travel mug with tap water, so you don’t have to waste plastic. While walking around, you’ll see many drinking fountains. Here, we call them “big noses” because of their shape. Please don’t waste water. Conservation is very important to Romans.

Museums. People from all over the world come to visit our Museums, so sometimes you may find a queue to get in. It’s often possible to avoid this by buying your tickets online. Did you know that many public Museums are free on the first Sunday of the month?

Public transports. You’ll fall in love with Rome by walking or cycling around, but if you need to speed things up a bit, take the subway or the bus. You can also buy through-tickets, convenient if you’re staying for several days. More info is available at www.atac.roma.it.

Respect. Rome is a majestic city that needs a lot of work in order to preserve its treasures. Respect our monuments, don’t write on the walls and don’t leave your trash behind.

Waste. Cuisine in Rome is delicious, and portions are very big. Remember not to get too carried away with your order. In order to taste more specialties, just extend your stay in Rome a bit longer instead! Trust us, it’s worth it.

Clothing. Remember that you won’t be able to visit the many beautiful churches of Rome if you’re not dressed properly.

Amenities and products. Only buy tickets for events from authorized retailers. And only get in authorized taxis. They’re white and carry the sign ’taxi’ on the roof and have taximeters inside. We recommend that you avoid buying food from street vendors, as there are complicated webs of exploitation associated with them. Definitely explore the small shops where you’ll find local artisanal products, and always ask your host for local tips.

Air conditioning. In Rome, the Ponentino wind blows strong. It’s the wind that rises in the evening, during the warmest seasons. Legend has it that this wind arrives when it’s time to rest, to dine, and to make love. When the wind is up in the city, you probably don’t need to turn the AC on! Most of all, make sure to turn the AC off when you leave your listing, or you’ll waste power for no reason. The same goes for the lights and the heating system during the winter. If you don’t need them, please turn them off.Thank you!
