HOW TO FIND THE SUBJECT AND THE VERB OF A SENTENCE:

To find the subject and verb of a sentence . . .First find the verb (or action word!)

Ex: walk, ran, jump…Then, ask yourself who or what is

doing the verb. THAT is the subject of the sentence.Ex: Mike talked to John. (talked is the verb and Mike is the one who talked, so Mike is the subject.)

ON A SHEET OF PAPER, WRITE OUT THE FOLLOWING FIVE SENTENCES. CIRCLE THE SUBJECT AND UNDERLINE THE VERB IN EACH SENTENCE. (IF YOU NEED HELP, REFERENCE THE PREVIOUS SLIDE!)

1. Ms. Webb is typing on the computer.2. Logan asked Ms. Whitehead a question.3. Jamie ran in the race on Sunday.4. Mrs. Schwarze rode her horse around the

farm.5. The dog barked loudly at the mailman.

**Reminder: the verb is what is being done. The subject is who or what is doing the verb!
