THE PRESS FOR LARGE SECTIONS IS
EVEN MORE POWERFUL
The great Metra press, the largest installed in
Italy, is even more powerful now.
This is a new challenge for Metra who,
thanks to the excellent results obtained with
this system during its first year of operation,
have increased its production capacity,
making an alteration that had been already
originally envisaged by its manufacturer.
The new press is the result of a precise strate-
gic approach aimed at consolidating the
Metra Group’s role of supremacy in Italy and
in Europe in the field of extruded aluminium
products. It is part of a project involving con-
stant and substantial investments that the
company is concentrating on the market of
large extruded products made to drawings
and of large bars of 6082 alloy for mechanical
processing and moulding. These are not only
interesting and highly qualifying market
niches. They also feature great prospects of
growth.
Implemented in February, the press has now
reached a maximum power of 6,050 tons.
In due course, alongside the present contai-
ner that enables 330-mm billets to be used,
there will also be a new and larger container
for 406-mm billets (i.e. 16 inches). In this way,
the maximum weight that can be extruded
will be increased from the current 370 kg to
about 500 kg. The aim of this investment is to
increase the possibilities for extruding in
terms of weight per linear metre in relation
to the overall length of the section.
Not only is this upgrade in line with the inte-
resting growth trends on the European mar-
ket for extruded product, it also further broa-
dens the range of sectors to which Metra can
supply extruded products. This refers in parti-
cular to the mechanical, ship-building and
railway industries.

MODULSYSTEM:
THE NEW APPLICATIONS
Modulsystem and Modulframe were created
to meet the need for safety at the workplace
as required in Act of Law n° 626, obliging all
manufacturers to protect their personnel
during the various production phases.
The validity of the Modulsystem range is a
real success for Metra who, year after year,
have added to it with new sections and acces-
sories, giving rise to an “open” and steadily
evolving range. Rounded shapes and new hin-
ges are therefore only part of the outcome of
this constant up-dating process.
Thanks to the flexibility of aluminium, which
enables even highly complicated sections for
large modular structures to be obtained,
Modulsystem is gradually replacing shielding
made in the past of iron or steel.
Ductility, however, is not the only plus that
this range offers. The extreme simplicity and
speed of the mounting operations, the high
level of recycling of the structure that is pos-
sible, the lower costs for transport and
labour make it an essential tool in produc-
tion systems.
Distributed all over the world (Europe,
United States, Middle East), Modulsystem
has now become essential in the world of
automation and handling, in particular in
the field of packaging. The high level of
hygiene that is a feature of the range also
makes it ideal for use in food-packaging pro-
cesses. This has broadened even further the
number of sectors in which it can be applied.

WHAT A LOVELY BOOKCASE
Resistance, eclecticism and lightness are thespecific features of aluminium that inspiredthe line of new products being offered in thefield of furnishing by Erreti, a company thatmakes accessories for the building industry. The “Amoremio” bookcase is based on thefront view of a flat section, extruded from6060 alloy, containing the outlines of eightletters (“amoremio”, my love). A range of dif-ferent sections, again extruded in alumini-um, complete the basic set for shelving. Theycan be combined in many ways and wall-mounted to make up a modular, rhythmicand infinitely variable system. This creation proves once again that alu-minium is a leading player among modernmetals, as it is eclectic and inspires all sortsof ideas for responding to the challenges oftechnological development and above all toinnovations in design.
PNEUMATICS
PIPES FOR CONVEYING AIR
Thanks to its ability to withstand corrosionand the effects of exposure to the weather, aluminium is frequently used to make pipingfor compressed-air systems for use in allsorts of fields (pneumatic systems, sanding, mounting, painting).Extruded in 6005 alloy and painted blue, asrequired by the regulations to ensure thatthey are recognisable, the pipes are designedto withstand pressures up to 15 bars. Thesepipes also meet high standards of precisionthat ensure small tolerances in terms ofdiameter so as to obtain firm sealing. Lastly, the lightness of this alloy makes the pipeseasy to use, making it simpler for installersto set up the system.
