Elks Announce Start of'Youth LeadersContest James A- Fornataro , exalted ruler of the Patchogue Elks Lodge announced the opening of the Elks National Youth Leadership Contest which is designed to spur youth to follow the example of America' s astronauts. The contest , now in Its four- teenth year , is open to boys and girls under 19 who com- pete ln separate divisions on local, state and national levels , Judged on their leadership ach- levments in school , church and community service activities. Americanism and citizenship ap- preciation, perseverance , re- sourcefulness and sense of honor. The contest , participated in by more than 2, 000 Elks Lodges , is sponsored by the Order' s Youth Activities Committee under the chairmanship of E. Gene Four- nace of Ohio. First , second and third place winners of the national contest will receive U.S. Savings Bonds of $1, 000, $500 and $300 respec- tively. Winners of the State contest will also receive Savings Bonds: first place, $400; second place , $200; and third pl*ce, $100. Awards ln the local con- test ore two $25 Savings Bonds. A Christ- mas partV is planned , with a visit from Santa Claus. Election of new off icers will take place at the business meeting, to be followed by a planned program. The Brookhaven Unit of the Suffolk County Home Extension Service held their Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Robert E. Starke of Bay Road, Tuesday. On Tuesday, the three seventh grade classes of Brookhaven El- ementary School visited the Brookhsven Librsry with their English teacher, Thomas P. Walsh. The purpose of the trip was to better acquaint the stu- dents with the biography and re- ference shelves. At Mr. Welsh's reque st, it was arranged for these classes to visit the library periodically. The Brookhaven Fire Company 1 reports forNovemberthat there were 5l men present and 11 men excused during the month. There was one car accident , one car fire, and one false alarm. There were 53 men used and 31 1/2 msn hours. Also , one compul- ssry drill at the fire house and 50 men were used, having 50 man hours. There was one fire school meeting on radios at the fire house, with 21 men used and 42 man hours. There were six use of Scott Air Packs , checking sirens, fire wells and equipment. There were 74 men using 140 man hours. The totals for the month were 198 men using 263- 1/2 hours. The trucks went 59 miles. A surprise baby shower was given December 5 in honor of Mrs. Gilbert Halpin of Bay Road by the Mrs. Frank Simpson and Mrs. William Purves. The show- er was held at the Simpson resi- dence.
